romantic comedy. you're doing -- you're in so many movies right now. broadway. you know, i first heard of you through a mutual friend, ari gold, which he's no longer with us, but just a lovely, lovely soul. >> this guy. ari gold was like the light of new york city. >> rupaul: yeah. >> we all sort of went around that light. we all sort of knew of each other through ari. and then our friend ari, he unfortunately passed away a few years ago. he always wanted us to get to know each other. he was always trying to connect people. "you should get to know ru, you'll love ru." i feel like that divine nature of the universe, ru and i had become friends. >> rupaul: yes. >> after ari's passing. >> rupaul: that's right. you know, i think of him all the time. i think of his energy, it's still there. >> i think he's with us right now. >> rupaul: he is with us right now, that's right, that's right. [ applause ] i want to talk about "sing sing," your new movie.

we're going to show a lip later. i saw a little of it. your inner dialogue as an actor is so rich. when did you realize you could do that kind of work? >> i think, you know -- i think early on in my career, the way i've even started my career, was very much feeling it out. and i didn't have a lot of training when i started, but i had a lot of feeling, and i could be very raw. training came later. i knew how to dial that in and calibrate a performance. i started to understand that i was very -- i was a shy kid, and i watched people all the time. and i didn't know that's exactly what i needed to do the work. i watch human beings all day long. i still do the same thing. i download aspects of them and their soul to be able to portray it. to pear it in a way, to respect them and love them, but let me them be villainous and loving and ugly and human all at the same time. >> rupaul: and you're not deterred by the restraining orders? [ laughter ]

>> never. not deterred by the restraining orders. i feel like my job is to give humanity to every single character. which is why i could play a pitch, i could play "the color punch," i feel it's the same essence. i want to make sure they're humanized. i'm looking at them through my lens, the lens on their interior life, not the lens that everyone else is looking at. >> rupaul: do you watch yourself on camera? can you watch yourself? >> i can, but i watch myself more technically for like the set and where the cameras are going and the lighting so i can fit into the picture. i don't watch it for performance. i feel like i divorced myself from that. no, i have to trust being in the moment, trust that my editor and the director's going to find the rate way to calibrate the film. >> rupaul: do you feel sometimes, i just gave way too much of myself? >> i think we all feel that way once in a while. in certain situations. [ cheers and applause ] >> rupaul: oh my goodness. welcome back. i'm here with colman domingo. that's what i'm talking about right there. that's what i'm talking about right there. i can feel you. i can feel that. does it embarrass you to show that? >> no. but i feel like you've got to -- i've always learned, you've got to give a little bit of your soul in your work. i think that -- that film in particular, i wanted to give even more than my soul. because it was about humanizing these men who are incarcerated, and they're doing the work through this rehabilitation through the arts program to heal themselves. not only heal themselves and heal some of the wounds or some of the things that have got them into these circumstances, but also to really do the deep dive of the work to find the path that got them there and what they can do to heal their souls truly. so it's a very healing movie.

it's also funny. and you're watching these men discover tenderness for each other and for themselves. and i think that that's kind of revolutionary, especially as black and brown men. >> rupaul: yeah. the movie is called "sing is it about sing sing prison? >> it's about a program the sing sing called rehabilitation for the arts. it's a program that's worked so successfully. these men go into this program it putting on plays. putting on plays, you know it gives you different tools, about building community and being in touch with their feelings. so much so that this program has had a less than 3% recidivism rate amongst the inmates who have gone through this program, compared with 60 -- >> rupaul: help me understand what recidivism is. i don't know what that is. >> recidivism is, you don't go back into prison. >> rupaul: okay. >> once you're out, you're out. instead of 60% nationwide. that's the usual average of people who come out of prison. >> rupaul: okay. >> so it's less than 3%. >> rupaul: all right.

and where did you film this thing? >> we filmed in upstate new york at a decommissioned prison called downstate where many of our castmates, most of my castmates, at least 90% of them, actually went through this program. >> rupaul: you're kidding me. >> yeah. it's only three professional actors besides myself. and the rest of my case are all formerly incarcerated men. [ applause ] >> rupaul: wow. now, have you ever been arrested? >> i've never been arrested, have you? >> rupaul: i have never -- i've come very close. [ laughter ] i've come very close. i'm not going to tell the story. but i used to party a lot. what you're thinking -- but more. >> but more, okay. >> rupaul: yes, yeah. but i've come very, very close. i think i have angels who saved me. you've never been wrefted or anything like that? >> never been arrested no. >> rupaul: would you like to be? >> you never know. what with the horror stories i

hear, absolutely not. >> rupaul: no. >> i'm always trying to be on thed. >> did you talk to some of the formerly inmated actors -- >> yeah. >> rupaul: -- about their experiences? >> absolutely. even in our process, i wanted to take them from where they were. like, where they were, because a lot of these men had been incarcerated for over 15 years. they were now on the outside doing the thing that one of my castmates, clarence macklin, who's extraordinary, he says, "so we can go back out into the world and heal these communities we have caused harm to in many ways." >> rupaul: oh, wow. >> rachel: >> it really is like, how do we rehabilitate? it's anot only rehabilitated yourself, it's rehabilitating a community as well. >> rupaul: years ago, a movie directed by the governor of california's wife, jennifer newsom, it's called "the mask we live in." it's about how young boys in our culture are told to shut their emotions off at 12, 13 years old. how are you able to sidestep?

because your emotions are right there. how are you able to sidestep that restriction? >> me personally? >> rupaul: yes. >> only, first of all -- now you're going to get me all emotional. i think i grew up -- i was told that i was loved every single day. [ applause ] it's true. i was told that i was special. i was told that i had a voice. these are things that i know a lot of these men were not told. i grew up in inner-city, west philadel philadelphia. and i was show, i was, you know, soft. but that didn't frighten my family. they were like -- they wanted to protect me more. the beautiful thing is, they wanted to protect that softness. i think they knew we needed that softness in the world. even when i think about it now, it really -- that's really beautiful. that's a beautiful thing. it's actually revolutionary. especially for us as black and brown men, to have feeling, to know that it's part of our -- helping us with our mental health these days to say that we must acknowledge all of these feelings.

and for you to see us completely human and for us to deconstruct and smash those tropes of toxic masculinity that has never worked for us. never worked for any of us. it doesn't help anyone in society. so the more that we can -- the thing that i feel very strongly about is that we show true moments of tenderness between these very masculine men. because that's what they did. whether they told me explicitly that that was part of their process, they were holding each other accountable to be -- to bring their feelings to the forefront. to name their feelings. to say, how do you feel? how does that make you feel? and a very dangerous place to show feelings and tenderness. >> rupaul: yeah, yeah. >> they were holding that to be true. so this program is a program that truly works. and it's beautiful. and it's necessary. and i think there's a line in our film that paul racy says, something like," who could imagine the healing of the world could begin right here behind these bars in sing sing?" >> rupaul: wow. >> for me, that's kind of

extraordinary. because saying, if we can do the work in a place like this, to become more human, imagine what we can do out in the world. [ laughter ] i did. i forgot. and so we get there, and i knew people, you know -- because of the "love and basketball," i knew we would get attention, but it was crazy. the next day, all of the memes.

so -- it brought me back to when we were actually shooting. when she wrote "love and basketball," there was no wnba. monica, my character, says, "i'm going to be the first girl in the nba." so she says that. by the time she got the deal and we were shooting, wnba was one year old. >> rupaul: oh my gosh. >> so she got this amazing opportunity to shoot the last scene of the movie when monica's checking into the game. >> rupaul: uh-huh? >> at a real game. and so i was terrified because we had one take. so it was the complete real fans, lisa leslie was playing, they were all looking at me like, who is this girl? they didn't know who i was. [ laughter ] like, why do we have to stop our game? i'm terrified because it's the last scene in the movie, and i have one take. if you really look closely, you can see the terror in my eyes. we did it, and we got it, and here we are. so, you know. it's 100 years later. >> rupaul: it's a classic movie.

[ applause ] what do you say to actors who are just coming into the business? what do you say to them about having a long career? >> i think it's about perseverance. period. i mean, there's a lot of destiny involved. >> rupaul: yeah. >> but there's a lot of hard work. and it's the business of acting, it's not for the faint of heart. acting is amazing. the art of acting is amazing. but it's a totally different hat. i believe that you have to keep a really soft heart in order to continue to do your art and be good. but then you've got to have a steel armor to navigate the business. and so it's about cultivating that and persevering. because sometimes it's just a matter of time. >> rupaul: yeah, you're right. >> not quitting.
