11:00 pm
america. the path that led me here in recent weeks was no
11:01 pm
doubt unexpected, but i'm no stranger to unlikely journeys. >> the journey of a woman born in oakland, raised in a neighborhood in west berkeley and now becoming the democrats pick for the white house with california's top party members cheering her on. kamala harris breaks another historic barrier, the first woman of color to accept a major party's presidential nomination. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley and i'm ama daetz. >> we have watched firsthand as she has served in many different offices. but tonight, harris had to reintroduce herself as a leader, qualified enough to be commander in chief. >> and she made her case in her acceptance speech, getting right to the issues we have team coverage for you tonight from the dnc to right back here at home. >> let's begin with abc7 news anchor julian glover, live at the united center in chicago. with the energy there, julian. >> lots of energy inside of the united center. when the vice president took the stage, this was a reintroduction of vice president kamala harris to her
11:02 pm
party. and also to the country. if you are judging by the energy inside of the united center, it sounded like a home run derby. time will tell how her speech landed with the american people. her speech was part autobiography, part cautionary tale of what a second trump presidency could look like, and also part of her vision for the future of america. if we are to, i pray tonight, vice president kamala harris stepped out onto the stage on the final night of the dnc to a roaring crowd, and when she could finally get a word in, i accept your nomination to be president of the united states of america. harris's speech at times relied heavily on the pages of her autobiography, emphasizing values instilled in her by her mother and sharing her childhood friend's sexual assault by a family member inspired her to become a prosecutor to protect people like wanda. >> because i believe everyone has a right to safety, to
11:03 pm
dignity, and to justice. >> in a convention that largely avoided saying the former president's name, harris namecheck trump several times, drawing clear distinctions, and we know what a second trump term would look like. >> it's all laid out in project 2025, written by his closest advisers. but america, we are not going back. we are not back. >> a popular line with the crowd as harris laid out her vision for the country's future. and that's the fight we are in right now, a fight for america's future. harris's speech was heavy on promises middle class tax cuts, bringing back the republican killed bipartisan border security deal and protecting reproductive freedoms. >> why exactly is it that they don't trust women? >> harris also called for a hostage and ceasefire deal in gaza, as some in the crowd shouted free palestine.
11:04 pm
>> president biden and i are working to end this war such that israel is secure. the hostages are released, the suffering in gaza ends, and the palestinian people can realize their right to dignity, security, freedom and self-determination. >> the night also showcased harris's family, her best friend and sister maya introducing her. >> our democratic nominee for the next president of the united states, kamala harris. >> her niece mina shouting out her bay area roots. i grew up in oakland, california, and her great nieces amara and leila, teaching everyone how to say the vice president's name properly together. in the most important speech of her life, the vice president welcomed all americans to join her. let's get out ther. >> let's vote for it. and
11:05 pm
together, let us write the next great chapter in the most extraordinary story ever told >> as you can see now, the house lights are on inside of the united center that means it's a wrap for night four of the dnc. the final night. you can see many of the workers here hard at work trying to restore the united center to its former glory. now it's time for all of the democrats that were inside of the united center to work to unite their party and also make sure that vice president kamala harris will become the first woman to serve as president of the united states. for now, reporting live here inside of the united center for the final night of the dnc, julian glover, abc seven news. >> yeah, julian, great coverage. and you know, now with the dnc over just 74 days to go to the election, can you capture the sense of emotion and energy that democrats there are feeling tonight? i mean, i think everybody at home can feel it as well. but i'd like to hear your
11:06 pm
thoughts. >> certainly lots of excitement all four nights here inside of the united center for the dnc. but to sum it all up, i would say cautious optimism. you have to remember, it was just 32 days ago that president joe biden made that stunning decision on a sunday to end his reelection bid in just that short period of time, vice president harris took that baton and is now running at the top of the ticket. so many of the thousands of folks that were inside of the united center are very excited for a potential harris presidency. they're just hoping that this sugar high doesn't end any time soon, and they can cross the finish line with a president kamala harris. back to you. >> that is a really excellent way to describe it as a sugar high. and it's all happened so fast. just 30 days ago, joe biden was at the top of the ticket. julian, thanks very much. >> well, harris's path is well known by now. her law career started at uc law, san francisc. then she became a prosecutor in alameda county. eventually becoming the da in san francisco and the attorney general of california before heading to the
11:07 pm
u.s. senate. her path to becoming the first female black and south asian vice president, and now the democrats nominee for president. tonight, abc seven news reporter tara campbell returned to where it all began. harris's hometown of oakland, as her supporters take it all in. reporter >> cheers for vice president kamala harris, now officially the democratic nominee for president of the united states oaklanders gathering in her hometown on this historic night as a young courtroom prosecutor in oakland, california, i stood up for women and children. the crowd proud to call her their own. i am elated. this is so inspiring. >> this is exactly what our country needs now. >> we've seen her grow up throughout the ranks in san francisco and oakland, and she's about to make change globally.
11:08 pm
it's going to be awesome. >> we get a lot of bad press, but this is the good side of oakland. >> and ernestine nettles knows a bit herself about making history. >> i am the first black president of the league of women voters, oakland, and we're 100 years old in the city of oakland. >> kamala harris laying out her vision for the country and oakland, responding, it is so inspiring tonight. >> and we just say, you know, you don't. it doesn't matter what your political party is. don't vote for yourself. vote for the circumstances around you. vote for your family. >> and watching a black woman potentially poised for the presidency, leaving some speechless. >> it's very speechless. >> but not only a black woman, a woman, period. you know, someone who understands our circumstance. someone who knows what our struggles are. and for someone who can relate and not only relate, but do something about it. amazing, amazing. >> thank you for inspiring all of these younger women and
11:09 pm
stuff. thank you for just letting us know that everything is possible and anything is possible. she's just she's incredible. >> the bay area native speech hitting home. >> outstanding. outstanding. i'm i'm ready. i'm ready to do whatever it takes to get her in the white house i am ready. >> kamala harris clearly galvanizing this group of oaklanders tara campbell, abc seven news. >> and if you missed any of tonight's speeches or want to get the inside scoop on what went into the night, we have a full page of live updates right on the front page of our website, abc7 news.com. this really has been a campaign season unlike any other. >> it has just turned on a dime. as we talked about here, president biden was the party's nominee just a month ago, and he was struggling in the polls. >> and now it's officially kamala harris. abc seven news insider phil matier told us tonight served as her reintroduction and the race can really begin. >> what we had here is a
11:10 pm
candidate that was presenting themselves to the american public for many, for the first time, and looking to make a good first impression. what follows in terms of policies and specifics is going to make the race even more interesting. >> the vice president hit on a number of policy priorities, drawing contrasts to donald trump's agenda. phil says the strategy seems to be more focused on uniting the party and swaying those who may be on the fence. >> i don't think that kamala harris is all that interested in in trying to change the mind of her critics. the goal of democrats at this point seems to be one to rejuvenate the party and get them to turn out. they appear to be accomplishing that. the second one is to go for undecided voters, voters who may not agree with the policies of the democrats, but would see them as a reasonable and her as a reasonable alternative to donald trump, who some people feel is just simply, you know, just off the off the charts. so
11:11 pm
what they're trying to do is present kamala harris as a reasonable alternative. >> and phil added, to watch the congressional races, especially in california, to see if they shift with harris's presence. >> in terms of response, the california republican party says a harris presidency would make the rest of the country look like our state in a bad way. state gop chair jessica millan patterson released a statement reading it's official national democrats have bafflingly looked at california. the state with high unemployment and exorbitant cost of living, a homeless crisis, a porous border and rampant crime, and said, yes, please, let's do that to the whole country. she concluded, saying voters may realize she belongs nowhere near the oval office. >> the trump campaign made its way to arizona today. donald trump toured the border wall criticizing president biden and vice president harris for not finishing the build that he started. >> she will never build the
11:12 pm
wall. she doesn't want to build the wall. she's only saying if she if she changes her mind, it's only because she wants to get elected. because who wouldn't want to have a strong border? you need strong borders and strong elections, and we have neither. >> while trump was in arizona, a man was taken into custody in connection with an alleged social media threat to kill trump. tomorrow trump will hold a rally near phoenix. abc news is your place when it comes to all things 2024. with less than 75 days to go until election day, you can find complete coverage and live updates on abc seven news.com and the abc seven news app. >> all right, let's move on now. an emotional night for the men and women in uniform in san jose. they paid tribute to one of their own, taken far too soon. >> a new round of covid shots has arrived, and we have everything you need to know. plus okay, so i see one over here. >> the pest patrol brigade going around one northern california town.
