weekend. i'll have an hour by hour forecast coming up. >> the benefits of waiting for your next covid vaccine. which month? one doctor says you should get the new shot. plus, as a young courtroom prosecutor in oakland, california, i stood up just one of many bay mentions of the democratic national convention. >> and while that event ended in messages, momentum and merchandise continue. >> from abc seven live breaking news. >> and that breaking news is out of germany, where three people are dead and a manhunt is on after a knife attack at a festival. the violence happened at an event celebrating the 650th anniversary of the town solingen. police say around 9:30 p.m. local time, someone with a knife started attacking people at random in a market square. again, three people are dead. at least five others are hurt. police say the attacker is on

the run and they do not have much information to go on right now. >> we'll keep you updated on that. and back here at home, some streets around a dublin apartment complex have reopened as police investigate a deadly shooting inside one of the units. it happened at the emerald park apartment complex off hacienda drive. police say a man was found shot in the head inside an apartment. the suspect is still on the loose. police say there is no threat to the general public. >> and new at six. investigators say a wildfire that destroyed more than a dozen homes is a case of arson. and they've now arrested a suspect. the thompson fire burned 3700 acres on the eastern side of oroville in butte county last month. cal fire investigators arrested a 26 year old from oroville yesterday. he's being held without bail. cal fire is not saying how he's accused of sparking the fire, but we are hoping to learn more in a news conference coming up on monday. good evening. thank you for joining us. >> i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. now to something that we are all noticing this a little bit weird weather.

>> yeah it's a taste of autumn with cooler temperatures. >> let's go to abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel. all right, sandhya, how's the weekend looking? >> well, the start of it. dan and ama is going to be a little bit damp, but not for everyone. and then we will brighten it up. let me show you live doppler seven. right now, if you were not prepared, you may have been dodging some drops this afternoon. we did have a few showers. go through. right now it is pretty quiet on live doppler seven. we're getting some breaks in the cloud cover, but that's not going to last as we look up to the north right around the northwestern portion of california, you will see steady rain, all in association with a rare deep upper level low. so as it continues to move in to our north, we're going to see a few more showers developing around midnight around mendocino county. during the overnight hours, passing through parts of the bay area 530 in the morning. watch out for some damp roadways. you will notice they're very scattered at 730 tomorrow morning. a little bit of drizzle as well. at 10:00 things are starting to wind down. it is gusty over our hills. atlas peak 23 miles an

and illness. cdc director doctor mandy cohen says testing treatment and vaccines remain top priorities, especially when it comes to covid. >> it is changing faster than even the flu virus, so we need to continue to be vigilant. but yes, is it endemic? it is here with us. we need to protect ourselves and we have the tools to do it. we just need to use them. >> the government will once again provide for free covid tests per household, and the cdc has allocated $62 million for state and local programs to provide vaccines for uninsured and underinsured adults, including for the newly fda approved updated covid vaccine aimed at targeting the dominant cp2 variant. >> all of these vaccines prevent the worst of these infections. that means fewer visits to the doctor, fewer hospitalizations, and more time to enjoy the fall and winter with family and loved ones. >> the cdc recommends everyone six months or older get the updated covid and flu shots. you can even get them at the same time. meanwhile, they say people 60 and older, infants and people
6:05 pm
who are 32 to 36 weeks pregnant should also get the rsv vaccine. the updated covid vaccine will be available soon, but ucsf infectious diseases expert doctor peter chin-hong suggests waiting until october will help you best avoid serious disease and infection. >> right after october comes a bunch of events. there's thanksgiving, there's the holidays, there's holiday parties, there's holiday travels. so if i wanted to kind of get the biggest bang for the buck, it's going to be that period because antibodies are going to peak for that period. if you were recently infected with covid or recently had a covid vaccine, doctor chin-hong suggests waiting at least two months for the new vaccine. >> dustin dorsey, abc seven news. >> and dustin mentioned the government's free covid tests. this is the third year in a row you'll be able to request free tests in the mail starting in late september. you can get four tests in this round by visiting covidtests.gov. >> on to your voice. your vote. robert f kennedy jr has suspended his long shot campaign for president and come out in support of former president
6:06 pm
donald trump. kennedy made the announcement at an event in phoenix, arizona, today. >> it's with a sense of victory and not defeat that i am suspending my campaign. and now to throw my support to president trump. >> kennedy began his white house run in april 2023 as a democrat to challenge president biden. he later changed parties and ran as an independent. kennedy is still encouraging voters in red or blue states to vote for him, but says he is removing himself from the ballot in battleground states, where he could act as a spoiler. trump thanked robert kennedy for the endorsement during a campaign stop in las vegas that he made, where he addressed a promise he's made to americans who work for tips. >> if you're a restaurant worker, a bartender, a hospitality worker, a caddie, a barber, a mover, a driver of any kind or anyone else, you rely on a lot of tip income, hopefully a lot. we are going to let you

keep 100% of your tip income and not be harassed. just so you understand. >> trump stopped in the swing state of nevada pushing his no tax on tips proposal. he once again accused kamala harris of stealing his idea of not taxing tips earned by service workers. he also criticized harris's corporate tax hike plan, saying it would prompt companies to leave the united states, taking thousands of jobs to other countries. >> democratic presidential nominee kamala harris left chicago today. now that the democratic national convention has wrapped up, she and second gentleman doug emhoff are back in washington, d.c, california and the bay area got a lot of attention over the past four days of the dnc and some want it to last. abc seven news reporter tim johns explains. as a young courtroom prosecutor in oakland, california, i stood up for women and children against predators who abuse them. >> as attorney general of california, i took on the big

roberts. while having lunch with a friend, diane told us she can't wait to cast her vote in november. she also proudly showed us her kamala sweatshirt, a nod to being a so-called childless cat lady. >> i'm feeling like i can have a conversation with my niece and nephew here in nebraska, who were on the edge about whether they were going to vote democrat or republican. >> and that's not the only merchandise going around in the east bay. at oaklandish, jordan taylor says he's expecting the store to start selling kamala inspired items in the coming weeks. taylor believes the name recognition he brings to the city is a welcome change. >> it's actually something positive. nothing like crazy. that's usually on the news. so i'm very excited about that. >> voters will head to the polls for the presidential election on november 5th in san francisco. tim johns, abc seven news. a lot more to get to here. >> coming up next, a lesson in conflict resolution to save a north bay preschool from eviction. plus. >> i truly am unable to give this role the attention it

i'll say what city hall insiders won't. we have a drug, homelessness, and economic recovery crisis, because the system that's supposed to fix things is the problem. record budgets. fewer officers. business killing bureaucracy. the insiders won't change a system built for their benefit. i'm daniel lurie and san francisco needs a mayor unafraid to take on the status quo, bring accountability,

is expected to release a list of schools set to permanently close in the spring. those closures coming amid declining enrollment something kim is all too familiar with after serving in the superintendent's office and working on the school's closure plan. >> there's no doubt that we have some tough decisions to make, and what's most important for me is as a commissioner and as a colleague of other board members, as well, that we are centering the experiences of our kids. >> first and foremost, you have to be able to go out and have these conversations with these parents and these students as to what this means. and so we didn't have time to wait. >> vanessa marrero is executive director of parents for public schools of san francisco. she says she wishes the public had a say in all these moves. >> the main challenge that i'm seeing in this transition is the factor of not not allowing the, the, the, you know, the vote for the people taking away people's right to vote. essentially because you're appointing someone and not allowing for an

6:18 pm
certainly possible to see some flash flooding, mudslides, debris flows, that kind of thing. as we take a look at the winds right now, gusting to 28 at oakland, livermore is getting gusty winds as well. 23 miles an hour. a live view from our east bay hills camera. and you can certainly see some clouds and sun mixing in today's high temperatures, by the way, mid 60s to upper 70s, anywhere from a few degrees to about ten degrees below average for this time of year. so it definitely felt like fall 66 in the city. low 70s from oakland to san jose to redwood city. and it is socked in on the golden gate bridge. upper 60s santa rosa, petaluma, 72, in fairfield and napa, 70, in concord, 69, in livermore. if you do have plans tonight, as we look from our kgo roof camera, just some clouds out there right now. but tonight into tomorrow morning we are expecting more drizzle and spotty showers. sunday, sunnier and warmer and early next week the summer sizzle is back. if you're missing that kind of weather, we go hour by hour.
6:19 pm
1030 tonight, a few more showers beginning to develop as we head towards tomorrow morning. hopefully you're sleeping at 4 a.m. yeah, there's going to be some damp roadways out there. 7:00 in the morning, occasional shower or drizzle, and at 9 a.m, one last push going into 1130 across the north bay before this trough starts to lift on out of here, it is going to pass to our north, but it will squeeze out anywhere from a few hundredths of an inch all the way to 4000/600 of an inch up in ukiah. so your morning temperatures in the 50s and 60s, it is going to be a little bit mild and muggy with the south wind tomorrow afternoon, it's going to be breezy, brighter and milder in the south bay 79 in san jose, 82. gilroy on the peninsula. if you have outdoor plans, you're good to go. 80 in redwood city, 67, in half moon bay, downtown san francisco, 69 degrees. you're going to forget how much cooler than average it was today with a quick warm up tomorrow afternoon in the north bay. 78 in santa rosa, 79 in san rafael, heading into the east bay. low 70s oakland berkeley. inland areas will be up into the upper

boys known as the beatles invaded san francisco, and as local fans mark that bit of history, curators at the deyoung museum are getting ready to capture the excitement of beatlemania all over again. >> well, it certainly is nice to be here in san francisco. >> it was 60 years ago, almost to the day the beatles arriving in the bay area to kick off their first u.s. concert tour, and the images of the fab four performing before a packed crowd at san francisco's cow palace in august of 1964, are still the

stuff that dreams and screams are made of. twist and shout. >> shout. oh, come on, come on, come on baby. >> and while it's a bit of a hop from the cow palace stage to the bandshell next to san francisco's deyoung museum, curator sally martin katz is hoping that same excitement will still echo through in an upcoming photo exhibit. and she met us on stage to highlight its unique point of view. beatlemania through the eyes of sir paul mccartney. >> so this exhibition covers the period the three month intense period from december 1963 to february 1964, and so we have a rare opportunity now to see it through mccartney's eyes, to see it from their experience. >> the exhibit is called eyes of the storm candid photographs taken by mccartney himself with his 35 millimeter pentax camera and newly retrieved from his personal collection. the photos document that mad rush in the year leading up to the san

francisco concert. >> i love that the title of the exhibition is called eyes of the storm, which really gets at this idea. i mean, the storm that was beatlemania arriving here in the us, how it took the country by storm, but also this notion of looking, of being eyes and who's looking at who and the direction of gazes we're used to being the ones looking at them. and here he's returning the gaze. >> and mccartney turns his lens on both journalists and his fellow beatles, giving audiences an unfiltered look at the innocent joy and unrelenting pressure of their sudden fame. >> the photographs are on the go. they're blurry. we see a sense of movement. and so, you know, they're not carefully posed images where he's thinking about composition from a very deliberate perspective, but they do, i think, have a lot of value as works of art in and of themselves. >> the photos have been on exhibit in new york and will arrive at the deyoung this spring. perhaps reigniting the excitement that swept the bay area for so many decades ago.
6:26 pm
yeah >> wow. pretty good right? >> paul mccartney eyes of the storm exhibit will be at the deyoung from march through early july of next year. you've actually seen the exhibit i did in london, and it's just terrific. a really fascinating look inside. a remarkable time for four musicians from england who are about to change music and pop culture forever. all is seen through the eyes and the lens of one of those beatles. it was really cool. i'll go see it when it's here. >> that's awesome. all right, well, coming up next, new at six from the i-team. a chase, a case, and enough questions to get most charges thrown out. only the i-team's dan noyes traces

let's go! hustle! is getting started. well, we did that 30 years ago, when california first took on the tobacco industry. this is not just about access. it's about the message it sends... now smoking is down 60 percent. lung cancer 42 percent. a couple of our cities have already ended tobacco sales. a california without big tobacco isn't just possible, it's already happening. i'll say what city hall insiders won't.

that driver, questioning whether u.s. park rangers are in fact peace officers. >> abc seven news i-team reporter dan noyes has an investigation. you will see only on seven. dan. >> and dan, there are several questions about how the park rangers behaved that night and how their actions escalated. what should have been a minor traffic stop. >> i started having double vision, back in napa. >> 40 year old pacino. >> casey tells me he started feeling the effects of covid while heading home to san francisco with his wife and year old daughter in their rv. so he stopped at rodeo beach in the marin headlands. >> i pulled over there because i couldn't. i couldn't keep driving, and i didn't want to, you know, risk having accidents. so i knew that national park was somewhere i could go and park for a few hours and get some rest. just after nine on a wednesday night in january 2022, a u.s. park ranger knocks on the back of the rv. >> and then again 30s later. he didn't identify himself either time. the ranger's body cam

myself and then the guy took off. okay, well, it would appear that he's fleeing from us. >> a park ranger sergeant arrives and speaks with dispatch. she learns casey has a $7,500 warrant out of pacifica. >> one for 8.9 alpha and one for eight alpha one, providing false information to police and resisting both misdemeanors and nonviolent crimes. >> but mistake number two. the sergeant gets the criminal code numbers wrong and concludes casey was arrested for a bomb threat and was also one for 8.1 alpha. >> i thought they said one for 8.1 also. yeah, it must have been. which is a bomb threat and that bad information spreads from one ranger to another. >> false tags. no false bomb threat. a bomb threat. >> travis norton tells me that continues to escalate the situation. >> that would take you to a little more elevated sense of. maybe there's some danger here. >> mistake number three. when the sergeant tries to speak with

casey, it gets heated over that simple misdemeanor case. so here's where we're at. >> you got a warrant? no i don't. yes, you do. no, don't. >> no i don't. i already been through that already. >> pay for it. i had to pay for it. so i know that we already went through this. >> there's a lot going on here. my mistake. hey, guys, have a good night. just clear that warrant up for us. thank you. but then it turns into something that that in my opinion, it didn't need to. >> i know, i know what you're doing. listen, i know what you're doing, and i know i know what you're doing. okay, i know. no, no. they had him in their lane. and when they did not take off, do not take off. >> do not take off. >> running. casey admits at this point he made a mistake. >> and i know i don't have a warrant. >> and i have the paperwork in the car and i'm. and we were going through that argument and he pulled on the door and it scared me. and i just i panicked. >> and you took off. yeah. looking back on it, do you regret having taken off? yeah. >> do not take off. casey pulls

away in the rv and mistake number for the rangers in their suvs. give chase. >> we don't chase people for misdemeanor warrants. the risk versus gain analysis is just not there. what are we. what are we gaining and what are we risking? >> the rangers escalate the situation further, aiming their long guns at the rv as it nears the one way tunnel with the five minute red light. mistake number five. >> just toss this thing and go. >> they failed to deploy the spike strips properly. >> the deployment of the spike strips. not good. he puts them in the wrong spot. he doesn't pull them back, so you need to put them in the lane that the subject is traveling. that doesn't happen. and then once that vehicle passes, you pull those spike strips back. so you don't deflate the tires of the your own vehicles. that's exactly what happens. >> the rv passes without hitting the spike strips, but a ranger's suv runs right over them, popping a tire. >> i think this vehicle will be
6:35 pm
back in service in a couple of minutes. >> mistake number six. the rangers try to block the tunnel by parking an suv inside at an angle. >> we don't block anything because that is. that's dangerous. you can cause crashes. and in fact, it does in this set of circumstances. >> as i hit the curve, the cars in there, i hit on the brakes and it's just not stopping, you know? >> he sideswipes the ranger's suv and gets stuck in the tunnel with a carload of tourists. no injuries. besides, casey's daughter, who suffered some minor scratches. mistake number seven. this car moves. you get shot, your hands drop, you get shot. >> you have an officer who is pointing his firearm at the front of the vehicle. right up on when we compress time and space like that, you increase the danger level for everybody. >> norton says this ranger is elevating the encounter for no reason. >> hey, can you get your hands up for me? just. just get your hands up. something like that is going to be much more effective
6:36 pm
that everybody's blood pressure is up at this point. but we don't need to do that. you're the professional. >> i'm not going to fight you whatever you want me to do. okay. >> the rangers took casey into custody, charged with evading a peace officer with reckless driving, child endangerment, vandalism, and hit and run driving without a valid driver's license. resisting a peace officer. >> everyone involved made some pretty bad decisions. my client and the rangers. >> casey's attorneys successfully argued that u.s. national park rangers are not peace officers. under california law, and should have not been involved in enforcing a warrant from a state court. >> those rangers don't have the proper training to be peace officers and their specifically excluded from peace officer status by the legislature. the law is really clear in that regard. >> the judge dismissed most of the charges. a jury later convicted casey for child endangerment and driving without a license. he's on probation after spending a year and a half in marin county jail. but casey credits his wife for hanging in
