back into the styles of the early oughts. content creator erin miller. >> i thought you were too. >> reporter: donning vintage garments. you read that right, y2k is officially vintage. >> this is my dress. i'm a rock chick, mom. >> you're a rock chick, okay. >> i think gen-z, they probably feel like they missed out on y2k fashion because some of them were not born, so maybe it's a little bit of a novelty for them. >> reporter: as y2k fashion returns, comes with it a re-evaluation of the beauty standards of the time, heard on "america's top model." >> i'm fat, you're all fat. >> when i was younger, it was at the forefront of my mind. because covers of magazine would be all about dieting and exercises, which is just crazy to witness when you're, like, a young teen.

>> reporter: between 1999 and 2006, the nih reported a 119% increase in eating disorder-related hospitalizations of children under 12 years old. >> being thin was very important at that time. and if you weren't thin, you were fat. there was no such thing as thick. i can't get into a sample size, i like cheese grits. people that put the clothes on, the people that were on my team, made to feel a lot thicker than everybody else, which opened the door to a lot of different other things. i had other types of body surgeries, lipo, tummy tuck, all kinds of stuff. never really helped because i gained weights afterwards. i think i'm just supposed to be a thickie. >> back in the 2000s, it was about that aesthetic. >> especially for african american women, we have curves. to celebrate those curves, i was so happy about it. i was told a lot of times that, you know, that they need to lose weight. oh, my god, no. i mean, i remember them getting a grammy and it still being

sexy? >> reporter: why do you think y2k fashion is making this comeback now. >> i think i these young people are doing the damn thing. they're unapologetic. they like what they like. they don't really worry about what somebody's got to say about it. >> reporter: y2k and gen-z, recreating these looks, what goes through your mind when you see that? >> it makes me feel really good, because i can tell you honestly, i took a lot of flack back in the day. i was not considered a real designer. to see these young kids really appreciating and acknowledging what an effect that had on fashion is just -- i mean, i get emotional about it. >> hi, i'm raven, and you're watching disney channel. >> reporter: did you ever imagine that several years later, people are still looking back at your looks and recreating them? >> listen, i am humbled and amazed, and it brings me joy to know that it's influenced a new

>> hm. >> there is power in seeing people. >> reporter: you said a lot of this movie is about the unspoken conversations that go on between women in these kind of environments? >> the reason that those things are unspoken is because they're uncomfortable. fear or anger. women not being safe to express that, you know? >> yeah. it's harder, i would say, to start to find your voice at the beginning and advocate for yourself. >> be quiet. >> just be like, "only." >> we were expected to just be quiet and take it. when we start actually responding to things like people, we break the rules of the game. >> naomi, among the emotions you have to play is, during flashbacks, extreme trauma. what was that like for you? >> it was -- it was hard. like, there is a thing about, like, acting that's so weird. where you know it's not real, but, like, your body doesn't. that day was different. and that was one of the most special moments. you remember afterwards, i mean,
