killed a man in the east bay residents shocked. it happened in what they believe is a safe neighborhood, and the abrupt resignation at sf usd. one week into the new school year. plus, the effort to make a popular bay area road safer for bikers. good morning everybody. it's saturday, august 24th. i'm stephanie sierra. great to be back with you. >> welcome back. we missed you. >> i know i missed you all and the drizzle came with it this morning. >> yeah. call it plain old rain. did you have it out there coming in? absolutely. the roadways are wet, the wipers are needed, and scattered showers are in the area. as we take a look at live doppler seven, you can see the system and the lightning bolts to the north. the system is going to continue to drop south. move to the east into the sierra nevada, but in the meantime, out ahead of it. yes, we have showers all over the bay area from santa rosa to saint helena, down through marin county and through san francisco, and even as far south as union city and sunol. 680 fremont. you can see

a few showers in the next couple of minutes. 62 in fremont. right now it is 60 in sfo, where temperatures are muggy in the north bay from 63. in napa and 61 in novato. so we're anywhere from a couple degrees to eight degrees milder with all the cloud cover, the rain, the humidity, the clouds. stay with us. the scattered showers begin to evaporate and then by 1:00 we've got sunshine and perhaps low 80s in concord today. so it's a sunny afternoon mid 70s along the bay shore and clouds at the shoreline. a big warm up underway will detail that for you for the rest of the weekend and next week. coming up stephanie. >> all right, lisa, thank you. developing news now. police are looking for a suspect who shot and killed a man in dublin, an area that rarely sees violent crime. it happened yesterday afternoon at the emerald park apartment complex off hacienda drive and central parkway. a nearby school was put on lockdown. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez talks to residents in the normally

quiet neighborhood. dublin police are looking for the person who shot and killed a man friday afternoon. police say it happened at the emerald park apartment complex just after two. sandra cardenas has lived at the complex for three years. >> i was just shocked because we are normally a quiet community and living close to an elementary school. i never really thought we would have that kind of incident happen here. >> james doherty elementary school was briefly put on a lockdown as far as the shooting, police say an adult man was found with a gunshot wound to his head. he was pronounced dead at the scene. during the investigation, some residents were blocked from getting in. >> i'd say everybody is getting home from work right now and not expecting to see police first thing as you come in through the complex and definitely getting the message from the apartment complex that, you know, a fatality happened here during the day is definitely just kind of mind blowing. >> several residents talked to us off camera and said, as far

as crime, maybe their mailboxes will be tampered with or their cars will be broken into, but nothing to this scale. according to city data, there's been less than a handful of murders reported since 2014. 2 in 2020 and 2 in 2022. police say they were still searching for the suspect, but there is no threat to the public. >> i feel okay and safe knowing that at least they don't suspect that there's like an active shooter around. so yes, i think we're all just really on our toes and alert right now. >> in dublin, lauren martinez, abc seven news. we're waiting to hear if bart will operate as scheduled in the east bay this morning. it comes after major delays affected stations around downtown oakland last night. bart says it had to turn trains back at multiple locations. service was stopped between ashby west oakland, rockridge and lake merritt because of an equipment problem on the track near the macarthur station. video shows. this crowd at the west oakland station during

these delays. ac transit had to set up bus bridges for riders. public safety is one of the top concerns of oakland residents. it's also one of the reasons why mayor sheng tao is facing a recall election in november. last night, the mayor and police chief held a public forum. abc seven news reporter tara campbell was there with more on the discussion. >> a packed church friday in oakland, concerned community members gathered to hear from the mayor and police chief. what do you think it's going to take to reduce crime? money. money. >> more police officers. more of a real concerted effort. more from the community. get the community involved and that's exactly what this series of town halls is all about. >> the city's public safety leaders taking questions, one card at a time. up first questions about the police staffing shortage. >> one of the key pillars in regards to how we move forward with our budget. even though we

had a huge deficit, was to ensure that we continue to have those police academies. >> what do you think? can help reduce crime and make change in the city? >> reducing crime might be prosecuting more people. the people that run into stores and grab things and run are know that they're not going to be prosecuted. >> the police chief, speaking specifically to prosecution, saying working with prosecutors at all levels is key. >> we're going to continue to work with our state prosecutors, our attorney general and our federal prosecutors. when the crimes rise to that level and from prosecuting to the pandemic, questions about how to get young people the support they need when schools got shut down, that really threw a wrench in clockwork for a lot of, you know, these adolescents here in oakland. >> and i just want to hear something that's going to help, that's going to help offset what they've been going through. >> the police chief calling on community leaders to help keep kids from turning to violence. >> they're the elders of our communities and the mothers of our community that know that can

help us pull these kids aside and say, hey, there's a better way. >> and from the youth to the youngest among us, the next generation, top of mind. >> it just turns into having enough resources for children to go to. there has to be things like after school, there have to be programs. >> this oakland native says she'll believe the change when she sees it. >> the hope is there. it's small, but it's there. >> tara campbell, abc seven news. >> the chp recovered $450,000 worth of stolen merchandise in a bust on a fencing operation. investigators looking into a string of retail thefts track stolen items to a home in oakland. that search led them to a storage facility in oakland, where they found more stolen items. the chp says many of the items are from drug stores. one person is in jail. they're accused of organized retail crime, conspiracy and other charges. california college of the arts is facing a $20 million

deficit that is this. as the school finishes an expansion project to consolidate its san francisco and oakland campuses. according to the chronicle, a's president announced possible layoffs in a recent staff meeting. he also suggested a merger with another institution could help. a follow up memo says ca student enrollment has declined by a third. now to this, a big shakeup for the san francisco unified school board. the school board president unexpectedly resigned, citing personal reasons due to my personal circumstances, my immediate priority needs to be my health and my family. >> and while i believe this to be a temporary setback, i truly am unable to give this role the attention it deserves. >> usher, the mayor, london breed, moved to replace her immediately. this is all happening during a challenging time for the district, which faces budget cuts and school closures. board vice president

matt alexander will step in as president. phil kim was also sworn in to fill a vacancy. he will be on the board for the remainder of the term. in the north bay, a chinese immersion preschool is fighting to stay open despite being served an eviction notice. mill valley unified school district owns the building it claims tara marin preschool owes rent for june, july and august. the preschool director says she made the payment for this space. tara marin is using and hoped the district would consider that payment as rent. she says the check was cashed and she believes the district is breaking the lease early because it needs the space for administrative offices. >> i really want things to work out. i would love if i could talk to the school district. i would say, you know, can we come back on the table and try to figure this out because we're all just going after the same goals. we just want we just want

celebrated for his act of bravery after he saved a seven year old boy who almost drowned. monterey county park rangers say a boy fell off a tube near the shoreline at lake nacimiento in monterey county. 13 year old lazaro perez jumped in to help him when the boy didn't come up from water. >> he started going towards him and then he was about to go underwater. yeah, i was kind of scared. are you a good swimmer? well, not that much. >> i've heard both stories like these, but were both ended up drowned. it can happen to even the best swimmer. i thank god that he could save that boy's life. i told him congratulations. you did it. >> i felt grateful for what i did. >> park rangers say that boy is going to be okay. lazaro will be recognized at an upcoming county of monterey board of supervisors meeting for his heroic effort in the east bay. the push for safer roads for cyclists is paying off. today, those who ride up

mount diablo will celebrate the addition of new bicycle turnouts on the road, and officials say it's already reduced collisions. here's abc seven news reporter ryan curry. >> these signs are everywhere. when you drive up to the mount diablo summit. why? this road is narrow, windy and full of these blind curves. >> very fun. going up, coming down. a little scary for me. >> sherry taylor and alex sagastume are out on an afternoon ride. it's sheri's first time, but alex has been riding this hill for years. recently, he's felt a lot safer. >> they built up a few new ones on the side also, which are really nice, and it's a lot safer for everybody going up and down the hill. >> he's referring to these bicycle turnouts at the blind curves. they were first installed eight years ago after an abc seven news i-team report in 2015. >> identifying something that needs to be fixed. an important safety issue in this case, and pushing public officials to get it done. >> abc seven's dan noyes found there were 116 collisions involving cyclists on mount

diablo over a four year span. 70% of them were around blind curves. >> it's actually, over 300 blind curves as you go up the mountain. anybody who's driven up the mountain or ridden up the mountain knows that not only is it arduous, but there are a lot of turns. >> randy guadaira with the california state park foundation, says cyclists started raising money for these turnouts years ago. >> the rest was, donated by the general public, which was it was a process. it's exciting. and it was only like two years from fundraising to construction, which was pretty quick for the state parks and state process. so we're excited about that. >> this saturday, officials are gathering with cyclists to celebrate the recent addition of 22 turnouts, bringing the total on mount diablo to 67. and according to park officials, the ones already in place have led to an 80% decrease in collisions. >> the cars are coming over and these guys are coming down. you know, just having a good time.

and there have been some accidents coming down here. so it's been it was very dangerous beforehand. now it's made it a lot safer making sure the ride up and down the bay area's tallest peak can be done safely in the east bay. >> ryan curry, abc seven news. >> investigators say a wildfire that destroyed more than a dozen homes is a case of arson. and they've arrested a suspect. the thompson fire burned 3700 acres on the eastern side of oroville in butte county last month. cal fire arrested a 26 year old from oroville this week, and he's being held without bail. cal fire is not saying why he's accused of sparking this fire. a press conference on the matter will be held on monday. turning to weather now, let's check in with lisa. the rain is falling across the bay area. pretty unusual for this time. for the end of august. i'm like rain. >> second driest month of the year. very unusual. yes, and we saw a little bit of it last week as well. so. yeah. here we go again. it's not going to last long. the next couple of hours

and we will break out into sunshine throughout the second half of the day. but you can see from live doppler seven behind me how active it is out there. even with the lightning, there not a good sight. but we have measurable rain in the bay area. you can see most of the activity heading to the north and east of us as we go in closer. here is a look at the bay area where we've got scattered showers from santa rosa through marin county, and even over into the east bay. but east of our sweep here, mount saint helena. this is the concentrated rain. maybe over a 10th of an inch. but as we head further to the south, you can see the scattered showers from highway 29 napa out towards 116 in sonoma and then not picking up on some of this. that is continuing to fall through san francisco. just a little bit of wiper activity here and there. but notice pleasanton 680 south of livermore and back westward. union city and fremont, maybe a light passing shower. and even in the sierra nevada looking at the highest peaks, getting a dusting. and then down through

the central sierra by yosemite. check it out. big bear, i should say. bear valley and then down towards tioga pass looking at some really unusual weather for late august. but it is a quick mover and it moves out of here in the next few hours. 62 in vallejo it is 60 in danville. so the temperatures are mild. we're looking at the numbers above where they were yesterday by about 5 to 8 degrees. so our forecast headlines drizzle spotty showers throughout the day today morning hours and then sunshine by about 10 or 11:00 tomorrow. numbers come up 8 to 10 degrees. so where we are below average today we're going to make up the difference for your sunday. and then that summer sizzle comes back into monday peaking on tuesday cooling as quick as wednesday. there's a look at the rain shower activity. you can see it really only shows up to the north and east of us. and then

the festival of diversity in western germany. witnesses called police at around 930 friday night. they said they saw a man attack people with a knife. right now, nine people are believed to have been stabbed. no arrests have been made. well, today marks ten years since a 6.0 magnitude earthquake shook the city of napa. one person was killed and nearly 200 others were injured. the quake happened at 320 in the morning on august 24th. back in 2014, damaging businesses, homes and some of the city's most iconic buildings. nearly 100 buildings were deemed unsafe. napa is 140 year old historical courthouse reopened about five years after the fact in 2019. the quake, caused over $1 billion in damages. it was the bay area's most powerful quake since loma prieta in 1989. new developments now, a person expected to be a key witness in the 2023 murder case of cashapp

founder bob lee, will not take the stand. the government does not plan to call the sister of accused killer nima momeni as a witness. according to charging documents, the sister sent a text message to lee the night he was murdered. in her message, she said her brother had, quote, come way down hard on him. when the three were talking, it was considered a key piece of evidence. during the preliminary hearing, since prosecutors allege she may have been the reason for a dispute between the two men. the defense says it's not sure why she is not testifying. >> so we were under the assumption that the government was going to call her. i think that she's an necessary element for the people to explain certain things. doesn't look like they're going to do that. so we'll go ahead and consider whether or not we need to fill that void. >> yesterday was his 40th birthday. his mom brought balloons and signs to court. his trial is expected to start next month. now to the case of a

former bay area pilot accused of trying to crash an alaska airlines passenger jet. joseph emerson, from pleasant hill, is sharing details about what happened that day. here's abc news reporter gio benitez. >> former alaska airlines pilot joseph emerson is telling his side of the story after he was pulled off a flight in cuffs for allegedly trying to crash a passenger jet. >> it's 30s of my life. i wish i could change, and i can't. >> last october, he was hitching a ride in the cockpit jump seat on a flight from everett, washington, to san francisco when he says he began to hallucinate. >> there was a feeling of being trapped. like, am i trapped in this? in this airplane? this is not real. i need to wake up. >> he stood up in the cockpit and pulled these red handles that are meant to shut off the engines. in the case of a fire. thankfully, it didn't work. did you know what the levers were at the time? >> what i thought is, this is going to wake me up. i know what those levers do in a real airplane. right. and i need to wake up from this.

beatlemania all over again. here's abc seven news anchor dan ashley. >> well, it certainly is nice to be here in san francisco. >> it was 60 years ago, almost to the day the beatles arriving in the bay area to kick off their first u.s. concert tour, and the images of the fab four performing before a packed crowd at san francisco's cow palace in august of 1964, are still the stuff that dreams and screams are made of. >> twist and shout, shout. whoa. come on, come on, come on baby. >> and while it's a bit of a hop from the cow palace stage to the bandshell next to san francisco's deyoung museum, curator sally martin katz is hoping that same excitement will still echo through in an upcoming photo exhibit, and she met us on stage to highlight its unique point of view. beatlemania through the eyes of sir paul mccartney. >> so this exhibition covers the period the three month intense period from december 1963 to

february 1964. and so we have a rare opportunity now to see it through mccartney's eyes to see it from their experience. >> the exhibit is called eyes of the storm candid photographs taken by mccartney himself with his 35 millimeter pentax camera and newly retrieved from his personal collection. the photos document that mad rush in the year leading up to the san francisco concert. >> i love that the title of the exhibition is called eyes of the storm, which really gets at this idea. i mean, the storm that was beatlemania arriving here in the u.s, how it took the country by storm, but also this notion of looking, of being eyes and who's looking at who and the direction of gazes we're used to being the ones looking at them. and here he's returning the gaze. >> and mccartney turns his lens on both journalists and his fellow beatles, giving audience an unfiltered look at the innocent joy and unrelenting pressure of their sudden fame. >> the photographs are on the

this cutie minute maid who was sitting in on an interview was adopted. muttville senior dog rescue here in san francisco is looking to find more dogs homes and happens to be holding an event today. it will be at its old location on alabama street from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. this afternoon. muttville recently moved but does not have enough power to operate its vet clinic, so dogs are being kept at the old location for now. so happy to see muttville have a home. well, more than 3500 classic cars are on display at the goodguys 37th west coast nationals in pleasanton this weekend. this year, chevy chevelles are being showcased to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the vintage car. there's also live autocross racing industry vendors and businesses showing their products. the event runs
