dispose of the dead and charred wood and depending on its success, we could see this approach expand all across the state. abc seven news anchor dan ashley looks at the innovative project. >> years after the ccu fires roared through the santa cruz mountains, teams are still working to clear the charred forests to help prevent a repeat disaster. >> this whole tree likely has a core of rot in the center of it. nadia haney is lead forester at the fire. >> damaged san vicente redwoods. she says crews have created miles of sophisticated firebreaks in the area and removed more than 20,000 tons of logs and dead trees. the challenge is what to do with them trying to find anybody who, you know can turn it into lumbe, even, you know, boards with a lot of character. >> you know, we're looking for something to do with it. >> but then forest managers hit
11:47 pm
on another bio friendly solution burning the wood. not into ash, but a product known as biochar. they are piles of blackened chips that can be worked into the soil to sequester carbon and help plants spread healthy root systems. we first reported on the technology as researchers at uc merced were working to make the specialized burners cheaper and more accessible. >> it's kind of a stable form of carbon, so it has longevity and is actually a really cool agricultural amendment. >> but creating the biochar is one challenge. the second is finding a market for it. while commercial suppliers truck the material around the state, managers at san vicente have found at least one customer closer to home, a well-known organic grower known as jacob's farm. >> this is you know, this is basically what we're looking at. >> manager greg rawlings met us in one of their fields north of santa cruz, just a few miles away from san vicente. that's
11:48 pm
where the farm is mixing in biochar with the rows of premium dill and cilantro. >> once it's in the soil, it again acts like a house or a condo, and it protects it from, you know, overwatering or. well, you know, say excessive rains or flooding or, you know, drying out. >> and he believes customers will ultimately taste the difference. >> what you want to do with an organic field is you want to you want to have the plants in symbiosis with the fungal and the bacteria in the soil, and that's what produces you know, the great flavor of organic produce. >> and back at san vicente, it's a kind of testing lab for technology that's helping to turn the remnants of a painful disaster into a productive solution, one they hope will spread to other areas across northern california and the west. dan beautiful day today. >> meteorologist frances dinglasan here to talk more. more to come maybe. >> yeah, definitely more to come. in fact, take a look at temperatures right now. we're still in the 70s in brentwood, san jose. and you know it is going to be warm and beautiful
11:49 pm
tomorrow. but we will wake up to temperatures in the mid 50s to low 60s with some low stratus clouds. but plenty of sunshine means we'll warm up into the upper 90s for some of our inland areas. lots of 80s around the bay and at the beaches near 70 degrees. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. so three more gorgeous sunny days and then the heat starts to ease on thursday. closer to average by friday and then cooler for next weekend. >> i think that's the thumbs up. >> yeah, i like it. >> everybody's a fan. next in sports. just two weeks and a day until the niners season opener right here on abc seven. how does brock purdy feel about the preseason? hear from the niners starting

friday, brock purdy did okay, which is okay when the games don't count. purdy didn't hesitate on the first play of the game in formation, lined up looking for a man throwing to deebo samuel. makes a great sideline catch for 27 yards. that drive ended in a field goal. next drive we go. purdy's throw of the night to george kittle who makes a great leaping catch for 19 yard gain there. kittle had three catches for 34 yards. still on the drive purdy with the 14 yard. hey i think i'll take it through here. 14 yard scramble. best drive of the night 85 yards and ended with a td. second quarter purdy trying to end his night right. but the pass to deebo. oh it's tipped and picked off. and in the heat of the moment purdy dove and led with his helmet making the tackle. said later that that might not have been the smartest thing to do, but he was okay and satisfied with the rest of the night. >> yeah, it felt good to get out there with the guys and just move the ball, you know, last
11:54 pm
week obviously wanted to move it a little bit more efficiently and stuff. so to get out there and get some first downs and score and put the points up on the board, it felt good. so you know, when you're starting out a game, you sort of have your openers and you have an idea of like what plays you want to run and you know who you want to try to get the ball to. if it's the right look. and, you know, sure enough, we got we got some good looks and good opportunities to get the ball in his hands and george's hands. so i feel like we did a good job of, you know, sort of connecting and just feeling that game atmosphere again, you know, for us as starters, the next big thing for the niners is cutting down the roster to 53 guys on tuesday. >> and with brandon aiyuk and trent williams both wanting new contracts and still unsigned, that may affect the back end of the roster and how many guys they actually keep on a conference call today. head coach kyle shanahan naturally playing it close to the vest. >> i mean, it's just connecting all the positions. i mean, there's you know, you have the unknowns with va and trent right now, and then we have a lot of
11:55 pm
good competition, a number of positions, whether to go light in certain places, heavier in some others, definitely don't want to get into any specifics, though, because, that's what all 32 teams are doing right now, watching everyone's rosters, trying to listen to everything and figure out which guys they can get. >> the giants lost today in seattle and may have lost their starting pitcher, robbie ray. he threw one pitch in the fourth inning and felt his left hamstring tighten. he left the game and will have more tests tomorrow. the 32 year old ray missed over a year due to tommy john surgery, and just made his giants debut a month ago. he says it was the first time he's had any issues with his hamstring, but didn't want to take any chances. >> you know, i just felt it on one pitch. i felt it kind of tighten up on me. took a step and i was like, yeah, you know, i've tried to push through injuries in the past before and it hasn't gone well for me. so, hopefully he caught it before anything significant, but we'll find out during the course of the season you're going to have
11:56 pm
some issues. >> that's why you try to create some depth in the in the rotation. so we'll see what's next for us. now whether it's i really don't know. >> somebody get that guy a warriors jersey. well the chicago white sox lost their 100th game today 9 to 4 to the tigers. the white sox became just the third team in the modern mlb era to lose 100 games before september. and the second fastest to 100in terms of games played. their only win in the last week was wednesday's series finale in san francisco. the 31 and 100, and have to win 12 of their final 31 games to avoid passing the woeful 1962 mets for the most losses in a season. in the modern era. it's not looking good for the south siders. nascar truck series in milwaukee today. lane riggs won his first race ever, so you got to do the burnout thing and the smoke thing right? there he goes. and then he gets up on the cab. at

one point, you're about to see it right here jumping up and down and get this. he dislocated his shoulder. turns out it's happened before, but maybe he should just tone down the celebration just a little bit next time. >> it looked like you might have popped your shoulder out. what happened? yeah. >> dislocated my shoulder. i was celebrating so hard. it hurts like a mug, but, hey, it was worth it. it's not a it's not the first time it's happened to me. but it ain't going to slow me down. >> this abc seven sports report is sponsored by river rock casino. a reminder that you can watch all our newscasts live and on demand through the abc seven bay area connected tv app. it's available for apple tv, google tv, amazon fire tv, and roku. download the app now and start streaming. well, that's it for tonight. i'm j.r. stone. abc seven news continues tomorrow morning at five for francis. thanks for joining us
