sick of getting emails from the boss while on vacation. >> from abc news this is america this morning. >> good monday morning, everyone. >> i'm andrew dymburt and good morning. i'm alison kosik in for ryan. and we begin with breaking news. a disaster declared in southeastern alaska after a deadly landslide. >> it happened in the city of ketchikan. officials say one person was killed and three were injured. right now, everyone is accounted for. >> several homes have been damaged or destroyed, and mandatory evacuation orders are in effect for the immediate area. power is slowly being restored, but some customers may be in the dark for several days. the big concern now is a second landslide. >> ketchikan's mayor says he's been in the city for 65 years and has never seen a landslide of this magnitude. we'll bring you more details as we get them. >> the other big story this morning rising tensions in the middle east, israel and hezbollah launching attacks on each other this weekend, one of the largest exchanges since the

war in gaza began. and both sides now warning this won't be the end. abc's perry russom here with the latest perry. good morning. >> alison. good morning to you. u.s. officials say the u.s. was not involved in the israeli airstrikes over the weekend, but they did help the idf track incoming attacks. this morning, fears of a wider war in the middle east are calming after israel and hezbollah engaged in attacks over the weekend. the largest since the war in gaza started. it is incumbent on all parties in the region to work towards de-escalation and stability. israel firing first and what they say were preemptive strikes after detecting plans for an attack on israel. the idf saying it hit more than 40 hezbollah sites in southern lebanon, targeting thousands of rocket launchers and missiles. hezbollah then firing back. the iranian backed military shooting at least 320 rockets into israeli territory. sources tell abc news the intended targets were estimated

to be israeli intelligence bases. >> hezbollah and israel. >> israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu says drones were intercepted trying to reach sites in central israel. and this is not the end of the story. hezbollah's leader, hassan nasrallah, says their latest operation is complete and they will wait and see if more action is needed. the pentagon ordering two aircraft carrier strike groups to stay in the region. the u.s. embassy in lebanon's capital of beirut, telling americans there to prepare contingency plans and be prepared to shelter in place. in gaza, more evacuation orders and humanitarian zones, including near this hospital. >> we people on the ground, we are not among the calculations of any of these parties. >> and the white house is showing some optimism in ceasefire talks. a senior administration official says even though hamas rejected the latest deal, hamas negotiators are still in cairo, where discussions are happening. andrew. >> all right, perry, thank you. we turn now to extreme weather from flooding in several states

to record heat and growing concern about a mosquito borne virus. but first, the news overnight from the grand canyon. reporter. overnight authorities confirming the intense flash flooding at the grand canyon has turned deadly. the body of 33 year old chenoa nickerson has been found along the colorado river. she was hiking when she was swept away by the flood waters. more than 100 people had to be evacuated. survivors now sharing their escape stories. >> we made it out with probably 40 or 50 of us stuck together and helped each other across the water. >> extreme weather is being seen from one end of the country to the other in hawaii. hurricane john lashing the big island. winds up to 85mph. flooding rains turning streets into streams in the heartland. ten people were injured on mcconnell air force base in kansas. heavy winds tipping a plane on its side. blowing over tents, forcing the cancellation of an air show and today, parts of the plains and midwest, including chicago, are bracing for record

heat. the feel like temperature could hit 110 in some areas in the northeast. the hot summer is fueling concerns about mosquito borne viruses. some towns in massachusetts have announced a voluntary curfew, even closing parks and fields from dusk till dawn. ten communities in the state are at high or critical risk for eastern equine encephalitis virus. >> key thing is there's no vaccines or treatment for triple e, so prevention is really very critical. >> although most people who get triple e have no symptoms, a small percentage develop brain inflammation and about one third of those people will die. many survivors suffer long term neurological damage. experts are also warning about the west nile virus, which recently sent doctor anthony fauci to the hospital. and here's a different kind of weather extreme. a rare august snowfall in california's sierra nevada mountains. three inches fell near lake tahoe, breaking overnight at least one tourist has been killed after an ice cave collapsed in southern iceland.

>> two other people are missing. they were exploring a glacier when the ice gave way. search teams are facing rugged terrain. it's too dangerous to use heavy equipment. >> it's unclear how long it will take to fully restore operations at seattle's airport after a cyber attack. agents had to enter travelers information manually, creating long delays. no word on who is behind the cyber attack or why seatac airport was even targeted. >> now to the presidential race. both tickets are planning swing state tours this week. harris and waltz, hoping to capitalize on their momentum from their convention as trump and vance hope to capitalize on a big endorsement. reporter this morning, the harris campaign, touting a surge in fundraising $82 million donated last week during the democratic national convention and more than a half a billion donated since president biden stepped aside last month. both campaigns are hitting the trail this week. harris and running mate tim walz will take a bus tour across

georgia, while former president trump heads to michigan, wisconsin and pennsylvania. harris leads in each of those key states, with the exception of georgia, according to fivethirtyeight. polling averages. as for trump running mate jd vance, he heads to michigan as he explains his support for trump's proposed tariffs on some imported goods, denying the tariffs would be a tax on americans. >> if you're not willing to impose tariffs on companies that are manufacturing in china using slave labor in china, you're not standing up to the chinese, and americans are really going to suffer. >> vance, in the same interview, was pressed on the subject of abortion and the potential for a national abortion ban if such a piece of legislation landed on donald trump's desk, would he veto it? >> i think he'd be very clear. he would not support it. i mean, he said that explicitly. yeah. i mean, if you're not supporting it as the president, united states, you fundamentally have to veto a federal abortion ban. i think he would he said that explicitly that he would. >> senator elizabeth warren is set to campaign for harris this

morning only on. >> good morning america. >> look at this. some scary moments at yankee stadium. umpire nick marley had to leave the game after being hit in the neck with a piece of a broken bat, which had shattered on a swing by new york's giancarlo stanton. marley suffered a concussion and alabama high school has suspended all athletic events this week after the death of their team's quarterback, caden tellier's family says he suffered a brain injury while making a tackle friday night for morgan academy in selma. >> the 16 year old died saturday. no other details were released about the injury. >> the founder of a messaging app used by nearly 1 billion people is behind bars this morning, and his arrest is igniting a debate over free

speech. he's known as the mark zuckerberg of russia. billionaire pavel durov, founder and ceo of the popular messaging app telegram, has been arrested in france. the app, which boasts nearly a billion users, has long maintained a commitment to free speech and does little to moderate content shared on the platform. >> my mission in life was to allow other people to also become free using the platforms that we create, or i created. my hope was that they could express their freedoms. >> french media reports durov's arrest was the result of an investigation into whether he had failed to crack down on illegal activity on telegram, including drug trafficking, child and the promotion of terrorism. >> we want to be a neutral platform that is impartial and, you know, doesn't take any side. >> telegram has said it actively combats misuse of its platform, saying each day millions of

pieces of harmful content are removed, and saying it is absurd to claim that a platform or its owner are responsible for abuse of that platform. many prominent figures are rushing to durov's defense. rfk jr, saying the need to protect free speech has never been more urgent and whistleblower edward snowden saying durov's arrest is an assault on the basic human rights of speech. telegram says it complies with european laws, but it was recently fined in germany for lax reporting of illegal content. >> a risky fight over a fish was caught on camera off san diego. the crew of a fishing charter thought they snagged a large tuna, but a mako shark, estimated to be around 700 pounds, had other ideas. the shark took a couple of bites before the crew finally pulled the tuna on board. >> amazing. coming up, a recall at walmart. the concern about juice sold in 25 states. >> also ahead, we hear from the families of the astronauts stuck families of the astronauts stuck in space for months on a trip

spacex to send the astronauts home in february. while boeing believes its spacecraft would get the job done. the uncertainty was too much for nasa. >> it just depends on how you evaluate the risk. we did it a little differently with our crew than boeing did. >> boeing employees tell the new york post the situation is humiliating, with one saying it's shameful. i'm embarrassed. i'm horrified. boeing saying in a statement the company continues to focus first and foremost on the safety of the crew and spacecraft. the astronauts families now reacting to the news that their loved ones won't be returning home for another six months. suni williams husband, referring to spacex, said it's her happy place, while butch wilmore's family tells good morning america they're praying for a safe return on whatever spacecraft that may be. meanwhile, this is a big week for spacex. tomorrow, the company will launch polaris dawn, a six day mission that will attempt the first ever spacewalk conducted by a private company. as for the astronauts on the space station, nasa says they have plenty of food and water and more resupply missions are on the way. >> coming up, a new battle over
