were hurt and taken to hospitals. the chp says a big rig dump truck carrying dirt did not stop in time and caused a chain reaction pileup. the big rig driver is cooperating with the investigation. highway 12 is shut down between fulton and stony point roads. no estimate right now when the section of highway will be reopened, but we'll keep you posted. happening now. we're kicking off a busy, potentially record breaking labor day travel weekend. you're looking live around the bay area for multiple shots from the bay bridge toll plaza to 101 in san jose. the peak drive time on the roads is expected to be tomorrow afternoon. between two and 6 p.m, along. this weekend, abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez has a preview from sfo. >> we saw some long lines at san francisco international as labor day holiday travel kicked off, but many travelers i talked to are taking it in stride. >> i'm handicapped, so i'm going
3:02 pm
to take a wheelchair so it really doesn't matter to me because they will be right up to the gate and they take me into the seat and they drop me off and so it's going to be crowded. >> i've seen worse and not in labor day, actually. one of the good things is that we have the global entry. so we have tsa pre-check, and we don't have to go through all the hassle and those kind of things. >> sfo is expecting more than 930,000 people to travel to, and from the airport thursday through tuesday. that's nearly 9% more than last year. they're almost at pre-pandemic levels. sfo spokesperson doug yakel tells me labor day weekend closes out the busy summer travel season. >> it used to be that our peak day of the entire year typically happened in july or august, whereas the last couple of years, one of the days around labor day tends to be some of the busiest days. so what that tells us in terms of travel behavior is people are taking more vacations at the tail end of the summer, and that's good for us as an airport.
3:03 pm
>> so if you're driving or flying this labor day holiday, you may have to deal with traffic or crowds. but there is some good news lower prices. analysts say airfare, gas prices and overall travel costs are down compared to last year. san francisco bay oakland international airport is expecting more than 200,000 people to pass through there during the holiday weekend. san jose mineta international airport is anticipating more than 22,000 passengers will depart from there tomorrow. and if you're traveling for the holiday, as always, get to the airport early. they're recommending two hours before domestic flight and three hours before an international flight. they're also recommending you pre-book your parking online at sfo. gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> the bay area is seeing cooler conditions as that travel rush kicks off. abc seven news meteorologist lisa argen has a look at your forecast and a look ahead to the holiday. >> kind of hazy here. pier 39. so the cooling trend really gets
3:04 pm
going today. >> now we had it yesterday around the bay, but inland it still was hot. and that spotty drizzle not only for the overnight hours but just kind of lingering and hanging at the shoreline. although we've got a pocket of sunshine right now by pacifica that will probably fill in throughout the afternoon. and then the temperatures wait. do you see this about face? come sunday into monday? breezy winds today over 20 miles an hour so that aids in that inland cool down for you. but as we get into your afternoon on sunday notice really no 90s except right there. clear lake, 93 cloverdale. otherwise, we're really in a mild pattern here with 70s and 80s for most. but as we get into your holiday on monday still is pleasant temperatures climbing through the 80s to the lower 90s. and then look what happens on tuesday. we have got a return to triple digit heat here, and it looks like north winds are going
3:05 pm
to aid in this warm up. so that's going to dry things out. i don't know if you remember it. i said it was 11% relative humidity up at about 1500 feet. so it takes a while for the relative humidity to really get back to where is a comfortable range in the upper elevations, because that is always much drier than at the surface. we have that constant southerly flow this time of year. so as for today, in the next several days, we'll have a lot of that. we'll have the low clouds, the fog, the free ac with the breezy winds, and today temperatures certainly sliding a bit from where they were yesterday, particularly inland. so look for that 90 today in livermore, 88 in concord, 72 in richmond. still dry above 1500ft. but each and every day that should improve right on through sunday mid 60s. san francisco 87, in santa rosa. so really much more comfortable today. and then really getting cooler as we look at the accuweather seven day forecast, temperatures dropping off. just a few degrees each day. but the winds are going to
3:06 pm
kick up and the fog is going to linger across the bay even inland. over the weekend. and that's going to allow for the cooler temperatures right through sunday, the first day of september. and then little change on monday, bringing up the numbers and then, boy, it is back to sizzling heat. tuesday and wednesday. >> okay, so you can track the forecast throughout the labor day holiday weekend by downloading the abc seven bay area app. we'll send alerts right to your phone with weather and travel updates. new at three a dancing with the stars pro is in jail in napa charged with domestic violence. longtime pro artem chigvintsev was booked into napa county jail this morning. it is unclear what led up to the arrest, exactly. chigvintsev is married to former wwe star nikki garcia. the two met when they were paired together on season 25 of dancing with the stars. in 2017. they have a four year old son together and celebrated their third wedding anniversary. just this week. san francisco police

out with cars in with recreational space. the san francisco democratic party takes a controversial stand in the debate over the future of the great highway on the city's west side. as our media partner, the san francisco standard explains in this new article, the democratic party is endorsing the measure to ban cars from a portion of the highway to create an oceanfront park. joining us live now with more on this is
3:14 pm
joe fitzgerald rodriguez, political reporter for the standard. hi joe. hey there. yeah. so your article, really fascinating topic at a heated meeting. apparently, the san francisco democratic county central committee voted to endorse prop k, which will be on the november ballot. so give us an overview of prop k. like who put it on the ballot? what would it do? >> yeah, sure. so mayor london breed and five supervisors put this on the ballot. prop k, it kind of controversially would close the great highway to cars. it would be the first step in converting that portion of the great highway, the southern portion from lincoln to sloat into a park. it's, you know, key wouldn't actually make the park itself, but would start the process. >> i gotcha it's multi-stepped. right. but what do prop k proponents see in this grand park vision of theirs? >> well, you know, they're really pointing at the fact that right now, the compromise of only having the park on the weekends closed to cars makes it so they can't put down furniture
3:15 pm
like, you know, benches and picnic tables, playgrounds for kids or skating equipment, all the things that you would want to really make a park robust and really make it grand. they're hoping that now if this passes, they're able to really make this kind of like a once in a generation level park. >> okay. all right. but there are also opponents and they see a very differently. and they include many chinese americans who really live in the sunset. and richmond residents and business owners. they say prop k will really devastate them. why and how right, exactly. >> you know, one of the major opponents of this is the chinese american democratic club in the city, and they came with more than a dozen people who were talking about the need to drive, to work, to drive their kids to school, to have unimpeded, speedy access by car that they're working class and that even a small impact to their commutes could really harm them. >> all right. so, you know, real
3:16 pm
quickly, since the pandemic, the highway has been closed to cars on weekends, as you referred to in the previous answer. but how well received and how well used is the space right when there are no cars? i guess that could give you some insight into just, you know, what would a new park do? >> sure. i mean, you know, first, anecdotally, there's been a little bit of like a photograph wars where, you know, opponents will take pictures when it's a little more empty and say, look, no one's using this. and proponents will take pictures when it's very busy and see, look how look how crowded it is. but what we have is data. and the san francisco municipal transportation agency actually has data showing that 4000 people a day use the space on weekends. at its height, 10,000 people a day. more than 420,000 visitors in 2023. of course, that is better on sunny days and worse on cloudy days. but there's a lot of people using it. >> is there also comparable data about where the displays cars are going? are they going into the neighborhood streets? isn't
3:17 pm
that one of the concerns? >> yeah, absolutely. >> it's one of the concerns. you know, a lot of the neighbors are worried about traffic snarls. they're worried about traffic collisions that could be happening in the streets, that the data shows that it's only really slowed down people's commutes by about three minutes. and sfmta has said, hey, we're going to deal with the traffic lights. we're going to deal with a lot of the roadways will make it easier for you, but neighbors really aren't convinced. okay well, look, it's all up to the voters, of course, right. >> but how good are prop k's chances? i understand it's got some big endorsers. >> yeah, absolutely. >> speaker nancy pelosi has backed this. and as i said before, mayor linda breed was one of the early proponents of this. and, you know, you have to see that when the democratic party gives its endorsement, this is going to be on mailers and everyone's mailbox alongside pictures of kamala harris. and it may even get a little bit of a, you know, like a kamala bump. >> right? right. i mean, the down ballot effect, right? okay. but obviously those who oppose this, they're not going to just
3:18 pm
take it lying down. they want to keep fighting. and i understand there's even talk of a potential recall effort against the sunset district supervisor. >> yeah, there's nothing set in stone yet, but there's really some neighbors in the sunset who are feeling a little bit of a buyer's remorse over voting in joe supervisor joel engardio. >> certainly, he still has plenty of allies, and he's done these popular night markets in the neighborhood. but at the same time, there's some neighbors who are like, wow, this is not what we expected when we voted you in. this is not in line with what we want. and they're certainly looking at their options when it comes to supervisor engardio. >> well, this is an interesting debate, joe fitzgerald. rodriguez obviously it's not, you know, a done deal. even if they pass it right. there's a whole bunch of steps, including funding and all that. so joe, thank you very much. interesting story. >> thank you so much. >> and you can check out joe's story, the article more of the san francisco standard's other original reporting as well on their website, sf standard.com.

and look at this. it is covered in thousands of pieces of broken ceramic dishware. yeah. locals call it tepco beach after the ceramic factory that was nearby. but closed in 1968. story has it the factory discarded all of the chipped or damaged dishware along the shoreline, leaving a site to see for all visitors. >> we're on a piece of land, point isabel, which was originally a wharf. and over the years, it has just changed so much that there's no way it looks anything like it used to look. >> i think they dumped here almost every day. someone in passing said, oh, have you ever been to tepco beach? they said no. so we came here
3:22 pm
>> we're at of tepco beach, which is right near point isabel regional shoreline, and i'm dave weinstein, president of the el cerrito historical society. tepco beach, as we call it now, has shards of beautiful old porcelain and pottery that were made by the technical porcelain and chinaware company >> they turned out thousands of pieces of plates all kinds of dinnerware. it was dinnerware, actually, which is very thick. they operated at their peak, producing about 30,000 plates a day. >> hotels, places in reno, san francisco, many of the local places. they all got special. tepco, where?
3:23 pm
santa fe land wanted to build a giant industrial place out here. so they encouraged all kinds of people to come and dump whatever they could to make land look. for example, these giant pieces of former sidewalk. so for many years, tepco would come out of here and they wouldn't just drive to the end and dump it here on the beach. if you walk through out, point this part of point isabel, you find a lot of this stuff buried in the dirt. i don't know what the pattern is for this, but. >> there's going to be breakage. there's going to be misfirings of some kind. bad glazings. those things aren't marketable and they just get tossed. >> people who grew up in the 40s and 50s and 60s have told me about playing right next to tepco, because they would dump a lot of the shards before i bring them here, apparently right out in a big dump, and children would go out and play in, in, in

the tepco piles and around this place. tepco was an important part of the city. one of the few businesses in town i used to joke, i still joke. it's one of the few businesses where you could go to and not get a drink >> they became collectible. in fact, my late wife sandy and i started a tepco collectors club about 20 or 30 years ago, and it seemed to us, as we were collecting, that the prices kept going up and it became more and more known and more collectible. and i've noticed over the last 20 or 30 years how the available shards are fewer and farther between, even though it looks like there's nothing but shards here. you could walk all across here and never touch a grain of sand. >> people over the years have come and taken a lot of it, but they should not. these are
