arrested him. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley, and i'm julian glover. >> the 37 year old victim was shot in the head outside of his apartment complex in dublin. that happened a week ago today. >> and now we're learning that the man accused of killing him had known him for years through video game platforms. >> abc seven news reporter lena howland has more on these new developments. >> a community manager, a husband and dog lover. 37 year old michael dileep was shot in the head and killed outside of dublin's emerald park apartments last friday. his wife heard the gunshots and found him outside, but the suspect was nowhere to be found. >> based on social media. we were, we were able to link our suspect. 38 year old nicholas palovaara as having an online some type of online conversation with our victim and from there, the investigation was off and we were trying to locate him. >> dublin police chief nate schmidt says the suspect and victim knew each other from several different online

platforms, including discord, a popular site for gamers to communicate. less than 24 hours later, palovaara was arrested on his way back home to arizona. >> it's just a very strange case for somebody to drive all the way from arizona to the city of dublin and commit this type of a crime. in dublin, we don't see these type of crimes here. >> while the chief says they are still confirming if the two parties had an argument at this point, they still don't have the motive. >> we know that they were associates on social media platforms. we just don't know what those conversations are ye. >> dileep's wife, cynthia, told us michael was a man who loved to cheer people up with humor and help friends in whatever way he could. she says they met the suspect in person a few times more than ten years ago at some gaming related events, but she didn't remember who he was. >> what's most troubling about this situation is that the distance. >> doctor lisa hill is a criminal justice and social work professor at cal state east bay. >> even during those hours that he was driving, even if he was

speeding, he it took him at least 8 or 9 hours, maybe, to get here, that didn't de-escalate him. he was still driven unless there was some, you know, continued dialog between he and the ultimate victim. >> palovaara was formally arraigned in an alameda county courtroom on thursday. he is expected to be back in court september 12th. in dublin lena howland abc seven news santa rosa police say a 14 year old student is in custody following a stabbing in the outdoor area of a high school campus. >> elsie allen high school was put on lockdown after the stabbing. it was reported at about 1230 this afternoon lunchtime on the bellevue avenue campus. according to the press democrat, a 13 year old freshman was taken to the hospital in stable condition. investigators say they recovered a knife. school staff detained the suspect in a classroom. tonight's football game has been canceled. >> the man charged with killing five of his family members last

month in alameda, pleaded not guilty to all charges in court today. 54 year old shane killian is accused of murdering his two young sons, his wife and his mother and father in law. the july 10th mass shooting happened inside of the family's house on kittyhawk road. killian faces life in prison if convicted of all charges, with special circumstances. his next court appearance is set for october. >> in the south bay, an emotional day for the family, friends and fellow officers of long pham. he's the san jose police department community service officer who was killed while on duty earlier this month. today, his memorial was held at sap center. abc seven news south bay reporter zach fuentes was there and has more on how cso pham is being remembered. >> reporter a powerful show of support by san jose law enforcement and many others, all there to salute community service officer long pham. >> his life, though tragically cut short, was filled with love,

adventure and a deep commitment to serving others. >> along with acting police chief paul joseph, many government officials were at the memorial held for pham at the sap center, including california attorney general rob bonta. >> officer pham is a hero who paid the ultimate sacrifice. >> and san jose mayor matt mehan. >> cso pham clearly loved this job. >> some of the most touching tributes coming from those who knew cso pham personally and served alongside him in another life, or in a paradise. >> we'll see you again on august 3rd. >> police say pham was senselessly hit and killed by a drunk driver while pham was performing traffic control duties. he was 34 years old. among the many fellow officers who were at the memorial was community service officer veronica bear, pham's partner. the crash left her with serious injuries. still recovering, her service was also honored. >> veronica, we salute your courage and sacrifice. >> pham's family did not speak

at the memorial, but through a spokesperson and sergeant shared his story. pham came to the u.s. with his family from vietnam when he was 13 months old. he attended school in san jose all the way through college. after seeing a uniformed officer mistreat an elderly person in a foreign country, he was visiting, pham decided to pursue his law enforcement career. >> he was a symbol of pride for the entire vietnamese community. >> his family now leaning into their faith to get them through an unimaginable time. >> the pham family find solace in knowing that long's died doing what he loves. >> donations for community service officers pham and bear are being accepted through the san jose police foundation's website. >> end of watch august 3rd, 2024, in san jose, zach fuentes, abc seven news. >> bay area law enforcement officials are launching a coordinated effort to disrupt sideshows. the crackdown will involve the san francisco police department and the san francisco sheriff's office, along with the alameda county sheriff's office and california highway patrol.

san francisco mayor london breed says the city will be using drones, surveillance cameras and license plate readers to help catch the people involved in these sideshows. leaders say they're targeting their efforts involving sideshows and cars in the intersections, as well as roving groups of dirt bikers who disrupt neighborhoods. just last weekend, dirt bikers took over the bay bridge and the streets in oakland and san francisco. the chp says dirt bikers are illegal to ride on highways and city streets without certain modifications. >> you see, these dirt bikes ride in large numbers on sidewalks, barely missing pedestrians as they walk. >> breed says she will introduce legislation in san francisco to make it illegal to promote and organize sideshows. >> local leaders gathered at a san francisco playground today to denounce racist and hateful vandalism. youth first, a community center in the lakeview neighborhood, was tagged with

the n word and a rope in the shape of a noose was left on the door. supervisor asha safai says he condemns the defacing of this center, which has been a lifeline for at risk youth. he claims the hate was directed at the facility's executive director, bernard monroe. monroe says he plans to host a community day to affirm the center as a place for all people. >> the clock is ticking on california's legislative cycle. bills have to be voted on by midnight tomorrow, or they effectively die. two bills coming down to the wire involve the ongoing push for reparations here in the state, and sources tell me they're concerned they may not make it. the bills in question. sb 1403, which would create the california freedmen affairs agency. this agency would oversee any reparations measures enacted by the state. and sb 1331, which would create a reparations fund. it's important to note that there is currently no funding source for this fund. it's like opening up

a bank account without any money. earlier this week, we told you about two reparations bills that did pass and are headed to the governor's desk for a signature or a veto. one would apologize to black californians for human rights violations for slavery and anti-black policies. the other would compensate families who've had their land taken through racially motivated uses of policies like eminent domain. but there is concern that the compensation bill would fall flat without the creation of the freedmen affairs agency to oversee the families getting compensation. i spoke to the chair of california's reparations task force, who helped craft the more than 100 proposals that turned into this first batch of bills. >> so of course, there's, you know, concern that time is running out. >> the passage of the bills is just one hurdle. the next one would be what governor gavin newsom decides to do either sign or veto the bills as the chair of the first ever state reparations task force, what

would your message be to governor newsom? >> my message to newsom would be simply do the right thing. finish what you start. >> state senator steven bradford, who was also on the reparations task force, authored the two bills in question. he told me, quote, i have the votes. unless someone on the floor is actively working against me. end quote. i reached out to the governor's office and they have not yet responded to my question on if the governor plans to sign or veto those bills. for now, we will wait to see if the bills do pass and what newsom will do if and when those bills hit his desk. >> green technology is expanding at the port of oakland, and officials from california and the department of energy took a tour to mark that success. coming together today to celebrate a multi-billion dollar agreement. abc seven news reporter anser hassan has more. >> california governor gavin newsom toured the port of oakland with officials from the u.s. department of energy to

talk about the future and what the future happens here first. >> we are america's coming attraction, and i think the world looks to us. i really mean it to see that this is possible. >> we're in the how business with so much focus on electric cars. newsom says california is now talking about how hydrogen fuel can help the state get to zero carbon emissions by 2045, and they don't want to understate its value as being catalytic. >> and it's changed. the conversation in sacramento. and we think it could change the conversation nationwide. >> in july, a $12 billion landmark agreement was signed with the department of energy to build and expand clean energy infrastructure across california. this hydrogen hub at the port of oakland is just one of seven across the united states. >> diesel is responsible for 43% of air pollutants and climate change gases in in california. so we need to make sure that we reduce those emissions. and this is a direct contributor to taking diesel off the road. >> hydrogen fuel is a clean burning energy source. its only byproduct is water vapor. the aim is to shift it to other

heavy duty industries like cement, steel and shipping so the ports have a mandate to decarbonize. >> they were looking for a fuel and now we have a fuel opportunity for them to actually accelerate that transition, at least in this country. >> the best, most durable use of hydrogen is for heavy duty transportation. >> david crane is the undersecretary for infrastructure for the u.s. department of energy. he says the funding is part of president biden's investing in america agenda, one of the largest industrial policies of the past 100 years. he says hydrogen fuel is a key part. >> california has led the way both now in terms of production with this hydrogen hub, particularly in the in the bay area in the transportation side, the port of oakland already operates 30 hydrogen fuel trucks and became the world's first commercial hydrogen fueling station for heavy duty trucks in oakland, anser hassan. >> abc seven news reporter. >> coming up, a six year old girl's pet bunny stolen from its home. and neighbors say it's just one of nearly a dozen break-ins on their street. the

in one case and this is really something they were caught on camera stealing a six year old girl's pet rabbit. >> really strange. and abc seven news reporter ryan curry hears from the girl's mother and other people in the neighborhood. >> this little guy is missing his buddy, and a six year old girl is missing her beloved pet. >> my husband was checking the footage, and that's when he saw him go into the bunny enclosure. and then he was like, oh my gosh, they took the bunny! >> the pair of thieves were caught on nicoletta philpott's surveillance camera's footage shows them moving around her backyard, going up to the bunny enclosure and grabbing a rabbit named snowy out of the crate. >> i don't know what they would do with it. i mean, it's, you know, either just to, you know, be hurtful to take something of,

you know, that's actually of value. we, you know, wish they would have just broken a window instead. >> philpott wasn't the only one targeted. other residents on this street in petaluma have had either their home or car broken into. police say they've had reports of nearly a dozen break ins just this week. lauren joffre is another victim. >> two younger gentlemen tried to gain access into my home. they broke the windshield of my suv. they didn't take anything. and then they came up the driveway and tried to get into the backyard. >> the abc seven data team looked at thefts from cars in petaluma over the past ten years. they've decreased since peaking in 2015 at 350 cases, averaging just over 100 the past two years. petaluma police say two young men may be responsible for these latest cases. >> they kind of work in tandem and they burglarized residences, broke into vehicles, unlocked unlocked doors to vehicles, and just stole a bunch of items from two different neighborhoods in petaluma. >> lieutenant parno hopes they'll soon be able to identify the suspects.

from mount tam, it is pretty obvious right now. san jose seen a little bit of haze as well. and the reason for this is the coffee pot fire in tulare county. it has just flared up and that wildfire smoke, you can clearly see it on the visible satellite picture is moving in our direction. so when you take a look at the air quality in that vicinity, it is poor to unhealthy in that area. but in our area we have pockets of moderate air quality because of the upper level winds transporting some of that smoke. so far we're good if anything changes. something to keep in mind, you'll want to. if you can close your doors and windows and try to avoid exposure to smoke, especially if you're particularly sensitive to it. here is a live view from tahoe, where we're seeing blue skies. absolutely gorgeous right now. if you are heading up to the mountains tomorrow, things have changed. a slight chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms. sun for the start of the day 83 degrees. sunny and warm sunday. bright and breezy on monday, which is labor day, but it is going to be a nice
