the suspect. also in the north bay, at least one person is dead after a plane crashed at an airport. we are hearing from witnesses about what they saw. and we have some sad news regarding a man who grew up in the bay area and was taken hostage by hamas. tsay seven. news at 11 starts now. good evening. i'm j.r. stone. we start with that attempted robbery and shooting of forty-niners wide receiver ricky pearsall. the forty-niners drafted him in the first round this past april. this happened right in the heart of union square at grant avenue and geary street. and we're told pearsall fought back against the suspect, leading to both getting shot. abc seven news reporter tara campbell is following this developing story. it drew sharp reaction from city leaders. >> a high profile shooting in san francisco's union square saturday. police called to grant avenue and geary street just after 330 in the afternoon, where there were reports of a double shooting. police locating

two people, one of them san francisco, 40 niners, rookie wide receiver ricky pearsall, both taken to san francisco general hospital with non-life threatening injuries. >> he was walking alone when a suspect approached him and attempted to commit to commit an armed robbery. using a gun. a struggle between mr. pearsall and the suspect ensued, and the suspect's gun struck. gunfire from the suspect's gun struck both mr. pearsall and the subject. >> the police chief saying there is no indication this was a targeted incident and that the only gun involved was the suspect who was arrested near the crime scene. >> the suspect has been identified as a 717 year old male who resides in tracy, california. thankfully, mr. pearsall is in stable condition. >> the police chief seen here arriving at the hospital followed later by mayor london breed and district attorney brooke jenkins. >> my hope is that we can demonstrate that this is an isolated incident, one where our

bay police just wrapped up on the scene of a suspected freeway shooting on eastbound 580 in oakland. two people in a vehicle were hit by gunfire around 2 p.m. and taken to a nearby hospital, then transported to other hospitals for higher levels of care. all eastbound lanes near seminary avenue were closed just after three this afternoon. they reopened just after 10 p.m. tonight after several hours of investigation. severe traffic has impacted drivers all evening in alameda county. we're also following developing news out of the north bay, where there was a plane crash at an airport. this happened at gnoss field in novato. there was fire that spread from the plane to the grass nearby, putting a plume of black smoke into the air. abc seven news reporter anser hassan was at the scene. he spoke to witnesses. >> i didn't hear anything. i suddenly saw this big black, billowing clouds, black, black and carried this way and realized something was wrong.

>> the black smoke. heather thompson is describing is from a small three seater plane that crashed into a hangar during takeoff, killing the pilot. it happened saturday afternoon at north field airport in novato. >> from what i hear right, the plane sort of shimmied and went off the runway to the left and into this hangar, and all i could see was what was left was the tail of the plane. >> one person who was at the airport tells abc seven news that the wind socks, which help pilots determine where the wind is coming from, were blowing in different directions. he says that means it was likely gusty in the area and that may have impacted the takeoff. he also says the plane likely had a full tank of gas, which led to how big the fire got. but we could see the one hangar. >> i believe it's only one that was really burning. >> the national transportation safety board confirmed the pilot died in the crash. in an email

to abc seven news, it says an ntsb investigator will arrive sunday morning and will be focused on three primary areas the pilot, the aircraft and the operating environment. that includes examining aircraft maintenance records, the weather forecast, the pilot's license and a 72 hour background check of the pilot to determine if there were any issues that could have affected the pilots ability to safely operate the plane. a preliminary report is expected within 30 days at north airfield airport. anser hassan abc seven news. >> answer. thanks much. we have developing news out of the middle east where the family of hersh goldberg-polin says his body was found in gaza by the israeli military. goldberg-polin was raised in berkeley. hamas took 23 of the 23 year old hostage on october 7th, kidnaping him from that music festival. he's been in captivity for more than ten months since just last weekend, family, friends and others rallied for his release and safe return hom. new developments out of the

state capitol tonight. as the clock is about to run out on two landmark bills tackling reparations for black californians. the california legislature black caucus says the last two reparations bills will not go to vote before a midnight deadline for them to pass. it represents a major blow to the state's first in the nation plan. responding to a legacy of slavery and anti-black policies, the bills would have created an agency to oversee reparations and a fund to eventually handle compensation to families. the formation of that agency was critical to a separate bill that passed earlier this week. it called for compensating families who had lost property to racist policies without that policy. that plan is dead. that leaves one reparations bill remaining. an apology for our nation's history of slavery and racism. bill sponsor state senator steven bradford says he's doing everything he can to bring his bills up for a vote. but there's

less than an hour to go. watch the abc7 originals documentary. california's case for reparations. it dives into the groundbreaking work of the reparations task force, examining bills that came out of it. it's now streaming on demand on the abc seven bay area app. police are investigating after finding a person dead on the street in oakland's chinatown. authorities are looking for several people suspected of physically beating the victim to death. police responded to a report of an unresponsive individual on the street yesterday, just before nine in the morning near eighth and webster street. officers provided medical aid until paramedics arrived, but the person died at the scene. the victim has not been identified. no arrests have been made. in san francisco, police are investigating a reported shooting that left a girl severely injured. officers were called to a home on chicago way before 530 yesterday afternoon. the girl's father, who says he

was not home at the time, tells police his daughter was likely shot by a stray bullet that came through the house. he says he was notified by his wife that their daughter had been shot. police say the girl was taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries. a witness says it happened inside the home, right as the girl's family was ordering dinner. fire crews have contained a fire that burned buildings near lakeport. you're looking at some of the images in that area here. urgent evacuations were ordered for a couple of neighborhoods west of clear lake near highway 29. cal fire requested a closure of the freeway in both directions near hill road. the fire burned 3 to 4 acres and burned multiple buildings. still ahead on abc seven news at 11. a popular spot to cool off in the north bay is closed for the holiday weekend. at look at what failed along the russian river, and a little later, a major warning about mosquitoes. as more people get infected, potentially deadly

believe how much damage this dam breach on the russian river caused at popular vacation beach in guerneville. >> it was such force. it came right straight across and just wiped out that whole edge of the road. >> the road, bridge and beach are closed this labor day weekend because the county says it's just too unsafe. warning signs now posted. >> normally, this whole area right here would be packed with tourists and with swimmers. and so right now, this beach is closed and there's a swimming hole right on the other side of those trees that a lot of people utilize. >> the reeves family are feeling deflated along with their paddle boards. they didn't know vacation beach was closed. they come here every year. >> the plan was to paddle down the river and then go to the beach and barbecue for labor day weekend and, but maybe it's going to be a little different now. >> this dam is used in summertime to slow river flows upstream for rafters and swimmers. check it out. you can see how low the russian river

has dropped since the dam breach. normally the water is to the top of those yellow boards and out of caution. park and rec district pulled some of the boards out to release the pressure on the dam, which then in turn lowered some of the river levels so some neighbors are worried. they say this road and bridge typically stay open through prime fire season. >> there's only one way in the community when this bridge isn't in, so they do try to keep it up until fire season until, you know, at least the end of october, just in case. so we don't get stuck. >> the county says the dam will be dismantled soon. the road will likely stay closed until next spring. in guerneville. cornell, bernard abc seven news. >> unfortunately, that's not the end of the water woes on the russian river. water managers say they found potentially toxic algae on the east fork of the river. that's up in mendocino county, northeast of ukiah. the north coast regional water quality control board says people and pets should not touch the algae or drink river water.

children and dogs are at highest risk for getting sick. the water board is putting up signs to warn people about this algae. there was a vigil tonight in san francisco remembering all those lost to overdoses. there are tributes across the bay area and around the world today as we mark international overdose awareness day. hope, a peninsula nonprofit, held a memorial walk and educational resource fair at the pacifica moose lodge. the event is designed to prevent overdose, reduce stigma and support families and friends of those who have been impacted by addiction. more than 200 people attended today's event. >> i think education is really important. i think we're all. another thing we try to do is reduce the stigma around people that are struggling, and not to look down on people and have an open mind. i would say the biggest thing i would say is empathy. we need to have empathy for people and we don't know what people are going through and what they're struggling with and trying to understand and just not judge people. >> training and free narcan were provided by micah's hugs, a

nonprofit in the north bay dedicated to educating youth on the dangers of substance abuse and fentanyl poisoning. recognizing overdose awareness day od free marin was in san rafael teaching people how they can help. first is to know the signs that someone is having an overdose. if they have slow to no breathing, they're unresponsive and can't be awakened, or their eyes have pinpoint pupils. >> you will put this nozzle up the nose, up the nostril, and then you will hit the plunger all the way through. and that releases one full dose they could come to and please know they could come to and be in shock. they don't know what's just happened. >> it could be combative. >> absolutely. so you want to stand back and then you let them know you've had an overdose. if they don't come to you after about 2 or 3 minutes, you open the other nasal spray and you put it up the other nostril and you spray. >> they were giving out those narcan sprays for free, which

oakland and san jose 59. then a little bit cooler in the north bay. some low 50s out there. ukiah and also in santa rosa right at 50. milder in antioch at 60 degrees. so tomorrow look for temperatures to be very similar to what we experienced today. but it could be a little bit milder in some spots, like san francisco 70, oakland 73, san jose 79. so our warmest inland locations will generally be in the mid 80s tomorrow. antioch 84 degrees. but look at fairfield also. ukiah 87 lakeport, 89 degrees. still at the beaches though with that sea breeze, only 65 in half moon bay. now. monday will be a touch warmer, but i'm going to jump ahead to tuesday where we see 100 degrees in some spots, like fairfield, concord, 99, antioch, danville, livermore, even san francisco. getting up to 79, san rafael 94 degrees. it's going to be really hot on wednesday. thursday is when things start to mellow out a little bit, but still hot for those inland

we are following two big stories tonight. first, forty-niners wide receiver ricky pearsall was shot today during an armed robbery. it happened this afternoon in san francisco's union square. pearsall was shot in the chest and is and is in serious but stable condition. the suspected robber was also shot and injured. we're told there was a struggle between the two. police arrested the robbery suspect within minutes. they identified him as a 17 year old from tracy. he was shot in either the hand or the arm. and in novato, one person is dead following a crash at nas field. witnesses say the plane hit a hangar during takeoff, killing the pilot. there was no one else on board. the flames from the crash spread to nearby brush,

putting up a large plume of black smoke. an investigator from the ntsb will arrive sunday morning to try to determine what caused the crash, and preliminary report is expected within 30 days. the pilot's name has not been released. now to the warning about mosquitoes. communities across the country are waging war against the pesky bugs. after health officials confirmed two adults in new jersey and two in wisconsin died after being bitten and contacting mosquito borne viruses. authorities say there are nearly 300 cases across more than 30 states. abc's naim has the details. >> communities across the country are on alert as cases of mosquito borne viruses are on the rise, including the west nile virus and eastern equine encephalitis, also known as triple e. health officials say west nile is responsible for the deaths of adults in new jersey and wisconsin. nearly 300 cases reported across 33 states, and

experts say 1 in 150 may lead to serious illness or even death. symptoms include high fever, headache, disorientation, vision loss and even paralysis. in new york city, on alert after mosquitoes infected with west nile were discovered earlier this week. trucks spraying parts of brooklyn and manhattan considered high risk. >> we think at this moment, you know, there is a high percentage of mosquitoes infected with west nile virus in some areas, not everywhere. some areas of the city, and those are the areas which we are treating right now. >> the northeast also concerned for the deadly disease known as triple e, after officials in massachusetts said a second case in the state was discovered. it's prompted some public high schools to change the times of their football games, trading those famous friday night lights for a 4:00 kickoff. >> it's a pretty big tradition here on friday night. i think the town should leave it up to the individual if they want to take the necessary precautions,

then do so. >> the rare but serious triple e disease is mostly spread through mosquito bites and symptoms overlap with many of those found in west nile. they also include drowsiness, behavioral changes, and seizures. and when abc news, washington. >> jaguar is warning owners of i-pace electric vehicles about a potentially dangerous problem with the battery. it's advising people to park outside because the batteries could catch fire. jaguars recalling models from the 2019 model year because of the problem. so far, there have been at least three fires in the united states related to the battery issue. and get this, the company issued three recalls previously due to problems with the battery. in vallejo, residents in the south part of the city are dealing with an awful smell of sewage. it's being caused by repair work underway at the vallejo wastewater treatment plant. abc seven news reporter ryan curry shows us what's being done to mitigate the stench, and how long it will last. >> you can't see it, but you can

definitely smell it on this hot late summer day. vallejo residents are struggling to stay outside. >> it's in different areas of vallejo. if you go down sonoma, there's a big, huge. we don't have a sewage plant down there. smells like that. >> the odor is wastewater. go anywhere in the south side of vallejo and it will smell like sewage and chemicals. >> if it's like a hot day today and the air isn't moving and you're around there, it's pretty pronounced. it's pretty pungent. >> it's coming from here. the vallejo wastewater treatment plant. the reason why it smells so bad is because this giant tank called a bio tower is shut down. it's going through some much needed repairs. >> there's a millions upon millions of square feet of media, plastic media in there on that media. there's a massive zulu mass that actually grows. that media has not been replaced since it was actually brought on line in 1988. >> media is a term for when plastic and rocks build up in the filter. orlando cortez is the superintendent of the project at the plant. he walked

us around the facility to show us the refurbishing plans. but while they retrofit one tank, it means they only have just one working to filter all of vallejo's wastewater. the strength of the wastewater doesn't go down whatsoever. >> however, our treatment did. so we reduce our treatment by 50% and thus, you know, it is what it is. >> the flood district installed these misters around the edges of the tank. they have a cherry aroma coming out of it. it's anything they could do to try to make the air smell just a little bit nicer. the project started back in march and the wastewater district told vallejo residents it was going to smell. but what they didn't anticipate was how strong it would smell and how far it would travel. >> we undershot the actual radius of notifying our ratepayers. i believe we went out a half a mile, now, in hindsight, we would have went out a little further, maybe two miles, just to make sure that we covered everyone in that area. >> mix that in with it being a hot summer and it means vallejo is one stinky city. but cortez says this project is necessary
