situation around this is suspicious from my perspective. >> more than a random crime. >> well, i would just say it's suspicious that in light of all the police officers that are in union square on a saturday, you know, in the middle of the day that something like this would occur. >> it's unclear what mayor breed meant by that comment. breed says extra officers are being deployed to the area sunday, and we saw many in cruisers and on foot. our officers were on the scene within a minute and were able to make an arrest. breed denies the shopping district was understaffed at the time of the shooting saturday. >> even a holiday weekend. there are officers all around union square, more so than any other community in the city. >> the san francisco police officers association says given our severe staffing crisis, however, there's only so much we can do. this is just another reason why we need to implement strategies to retain our veteran officers quickly. >> the scariest part was that it was at 3 p.m. in the afternoon, and not at night. yeah.
4:04 pm
>> this family visiting from sweden, say they have heard stories about san francisco being unsafe, a reputation city officials are trying to repair. >> that's part of why we chose this area to stay at the hotel, because this was kind of the safer parts. uh. but i guess not anymore. maybe >> and that 17 year old from tracy is in custody awaiting charges. police say the crime was random and that pearsall was not targeted for being a forty-niners player. i'm cornell bernard, abc seven news. >> cornell, thanks so much. shortly before the 40 niners released the statement about ricky pearsall's release from the hospital, one of our photographers spotted a small caravan of vehicles leaving the parking lot. one of them, the black tesla, had specialty vanity license plates from florida with the gators logo on it. pearsall went to school at the university of florida and played for the gators in 2022

and 2023. top contenders in the race for san francisco mayor issued statements on social media about the shooting on x, daniel lurie wrote, this senseless violence must end. aaron peskin said police moved quickly to arrest a suspect. ahsha safai said, quote, violence like this has no place in our city. end quote. and mark farrell pointed the finger at city leadership, writing, enough is enough. if we want public safety in san francisco, then we need change in city hall. abc seven news insider phil matier joins us live to discuss some of the political implications. phil when you looked anywhere yesterday, whether it was local tv, national tv or on social media, this story was everywhere. what kind of impact will this have any impact on this mayoral race? >> well, it's already had an impact on the mayoral race. it's underscored one of the primary issues in the race. one third of the voters polled put public safety as the top issue in san francisco. and this does little
4:06 pm
to enhance the mayor's ability to make the city safe. now, even though crime has gone down, a third in the city and violent crime is lower here than in many major metropolitan areas. nonetheless, it has been a cornerstone of controversy for the mayor. and it's not just violent crime like this. remember, in 2021, we had the looting going on at the same union square, a neiman marcus, where we had flash mobs go in and steal thousands of dollars worth of merchandise and then run off in cars. so this has been a hotspot area, j.r. and it is a place where a lot of attention is. and we've already seen mayoral candidates respond to this. how long? this remains an issue remains to be seen. uh- thank god, as his mother said, the rookie was the bullet passed through him without harming any major organs, and he's already out of the hospital. >> you know, the mayor we heard in cornell's story, the mayor saying that there are still there is still a big, busy and
4:07 pm
big police presence there. but i've personally talked with officers who said overtime hours have been cut in that area for the officers that work in that area. do you think that becomes an issue going forward? >> well, it's interesting, jeff. it's interesting because while police budgets have been cut back and staffing is some 300 officers under what it ideally should be, it's not just police that are out there patrolling, it's also off duty police officers who are in the pay of the stores down there. so you have police officers, you have regular officers on patrol. you have special units put out there. you have these off duty officers there and on top of that, we have retired cops working as ambassadors. so inch for inch there's more police or public safety presence in those few blocks than anywhere else in the city. and that's, you know, possibly what was behind some of the mayor's comments about how this is suspicious, because privately, people are saying how stupid could somebody, a 17 year
4:08 pm
old from tracy, be to think they would get away with something like this? and indeed, there was a police officer on the scene within seconds. >> phil, we also heard out of cornell's story, mayor london breed today said she thinks it's quote, suspicious that something like this would occur where and when it did. what do you mean? she was asked follow up questions and didn't quite answer what that would mean. what does suspicious mean in this case? in this case, we don't know. >> is possibly the mayor just thinking out loud and under the pressure of a rather embarrassing moment. but as you know, the idea that it is suspicious is was it targeted? the police say no. what was the point? possibly a very expensive watch. was somebody spotting this? was it a were they eyeing possible targets? all that comes into play. was this person here alone, 17 years old, from tracy. were they part of a gang that was here looking to rob all of those in her mind might ring suspicious, but i think what we're talking here is a mayor that's sort of off the cuff. and
4:09 pm
as you said, she didn't have much of a follow up answer to that. yeah. >> phil matier abc seven news insider we certainly appreciate your time on this sunday afternoon. thank you. moving along now, we want to stay with abc seven to cover any developments in this story. get updates anytime on abc seven news.com and we'll take a deeper look at the political implications coming up tonight at 11:00. turning to the war in gaza and a massive protest today calling for a cease fire between israel and hamas. thousands of israelis protested outside prime minister netanyahu's office, seeking an end to the war and the release of hostages still held by hamas. a funeral was held today for one of the six hostages found dead in gaza yesterday. israel confirmed those deaths included israeli-american hersh goldberg-polin. >> john and rachel have done everything in their power to help their son be released from captivity after 11 months of captivity. he was murdered by
