more about what led up to this robbery. gone wrong. it's now generating headlines around the world. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez joining us live in studio with the details on that, gloria. >> good morning. kumasi the san francisco 40 niners confirmed that wide receiver ricky pearsall was released from the hospital as he continues to recover from a bullet wound to his chest. the 23 year old rookie was in union square on saturday afternoon after signing autographs at the cow palace. police say a 17 year old suspect confronted pearsall and pulled out a gun. both were wounded during the robbery attempt. mayor london breed says extra officers were deployed to the area on sunday and abc seven saw many in cruisers and on foot. breed denies the shopping district was understaffed at the time of the shooting. on saturday, even a holiday weekend. >> there are officers all around union square, more so than any other community in the city. >> the san francisco police

officers association says in a statement. given our severe staffing crisis, however, there's only so much we can do. this is just another reason why we need to implement strategies to retain our veteran officers quickly. breed says that officers were on scene in less than a minute, able to make an arrest. police say the crime was random and that pearsall was not targeted for being a minor. the suspect from tracy is now in custody. san francisco district attorney brooke jenkins says that they expect to make a charging decision by tomorrow or wednesday, and they will be filed in the juvenile court. live in the studio gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> gloria. thank you. well, this comes as data from the san francisco police department shows the city is seeing a drop in robberies. this year. but that's not stopping attacks from mayor breed's opponents in the race for mayor. abc seven news reporter anser hassan has reaction from all the top candidates and puts this case in context. >> san francisco mayoral candidates are thankful that san

francisco forty-niner ricky pearsall survived saturday's union square shooting and robbery. but with nine weeks left until election day, many say this only adds to voter concerns about public safety. >> this is underscored one of the primary issues in the race. one third of the voters polled put public safety as the top issue in san francisco. san francisco mayor london breed has been criticized for crime in the city, but on sunday she praised the police and its policies. >> the things that we put into place in the downtown union square area actually worked. >> it didn't prevent this from happening, but the response was pretty extraordinary. from the police department. >> but some candidates for mayor are demanding change. mark farrell did not return requests for comment, but posted on x. enough is enough. if we want public safety in san francisco, then we need change in city hall. aaron peskin is president of the san francisco board of supervisors. he's also running for mayor. he says public safety is always on san franciscans minds, but praises the police

israel says it believes there are still 101 hostages in gaza, including seven americans. and when abc news washington here in the bay area, an outpouring of support over the weekend for berkeley native hersh goldberg-polin and the five other hostages killed in gaza, hundreds of people gathered in berkeley last night for a memorial at his family's previous synagogue, congregation beth israel. the congregation wrote letters to the family and mourn the loss of one of berkeley's own. >> the pain that they've been going through for almost 11 months was so clear and obvious, and now to hear the most tragic of horrific news for them is really, really, it's so sad. and we're wishing them and sending them all our strength. >> the goldberg-polin family now lives in israel. this week, a family friend and member of the congregation will travel to israel to deliver all of those handwritten letters. >> today, the white house says president biden and vice president harris will be meeting in the situation room, along

hip during an attempted carjacking in washington, d.c. he was able to return to practice three weeks later. he made his nfl debut that next month, and he is still going strong. this morning, peirsol is recovering at home in a since deleted facebook post. yesterday, his mom said the bullet that hit him missed all of his vital organs. abc seven news reporter j.r stone spoke with doctors at stanford and ucsf who specialize in these type of injuries. >> 40 niners wide receiver ricky pearsall was taken by ambulance to the hospital saturday suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. the area opposite his heart. he was released sunday, according to the niners. hours after his mother said online that the bullet hit him in the chest and exited through his back. >> if the bullet actually, you know, goes, you know, transects the chest, you know, it goes from the front to the back, you know, the chance of having a very serious injury is very high. and so, you know, frankly,

you know, this football player was very lucky if indeed, you know, he was able to be discharged from the hospital, you know, within 24 hours. >> that's stanford's dean winslow, who was deployed to the middle east six times after nine over 11 as a flight surgeon and hospital commander in the air national guard. he is not one of pearsall's doctors and has only seen the images we have seen, but winslow is very familiar with bullet wounds to the chest, and certainly this is the kind of injury that sadly, we would see commonly. >> you know, in soldiers, airmen, marines wounded in combat in iraq and afghanistan during my time when i served there. >> ucsf's jahan fahimi is medical director of the emergency department, also not one of pearsall's doctors, but well versed in injuries caused by guns in general. >> being shot somewhere in the torso in the chest area is a very high risk injury, you know, the biggest thing you worry about is an injury to the heart or one of the major arteries

>> new this morning in the north bay, a woman and her dog were killed in a two alarm house fire in mill valley southern marin. fire officials say crews responded just before 1 a.m. to the call on alta vista avenue. fire crews say that victim and four dogs were trapped inside the home. crews found the victim with significant burns and was pronounced dead at the scene. the four dogs were rescued, however, one dog died. the california highway patrol says it's not safe to pull over the dirt bikes and atvs that flooded san francisco streets just over a week ago. that's according to a chp spokesperson who spoke to sfgate. he said that while officers approached the group of riders as they were getting on the bay bridge, they did not attempt to pull them over. chp said it would be too much of a liability because the riders were driving recklessly. dirt bikes are illegal to ride on highways and city streets without certain modifications. >> another blow for people in southern california living on top of an active landslide.

socal edison shut off power to 140 homes in rancho palos verdes yesterday. because the land is moving a foot a week. there's an evacuation warning for that neighborhood. the city brought in backup generators to keep the lights on, but they're telling people to minimize their water use to protect the septic system. >> we've had problems. you know, they already cut the gas off, and cold showers. you get used to them. but the electricity is an entirely different thing. >> socal edison says last week the movement damaged their equipment and started a fire. residents say they want more support from governor newsom and the federal government. >> a dublin high school mom is thanking the community for their support after her 14 year old son was brutally attacked by four teenagers and a parent in the school's locker room. sheree barfield held a unity prayer lunch at her southern kitchen restaurant. she made a special menu for this event with a

portion of the proceeds going to the dublin high school athletic department. she says she's hoping to bring about change throughout the community and here in the bay area. >> this is just unacceptable. violence is not the answer. no matter what the case, it's hard enough for kids to be kids and teenagers on the playground without bringing in the extra element of chaos and confusion and hate and racism. they're all things that i wish i could eradicate. >> police say the incident was not random. barfield believes the attack was a case of mistaken identity. no arrests have been made. >> the a's are in the final steps of selling their stake in the coliseum to the african american sports and entertainment group, aa. sug purchased the city's 50% stake just a few days ago, and now the group will own the entire coliseum complex. the group is hoping to use the sale as an opportunity to invest in oakland and revitalize the city. oakland still needs to wrap up its end of the deal, and then the a's

the story. let's get paid. >> make them pay. >> this morning, at least 10,000 workers at hotels nationwide have walked off the job as contract talks stall between top hotel chains and the workers union. >> we've been here 44 years. this is the first time we've actually been on strike in eight cities, from boston to san francisco. >> workers, from desk staff to housekeepers, are striking at hyatt, hilton, marriott and omn, demanding a share in what they say are record profits. they also want better health care and a reversal of staffing cuts made during the pandemic, including the restoration of automatic daily room cleaning, which was scaled back during covid. >> so the strike right now is about better living wages for hotel workers, a better health insurance, a better pension also to fix the do not disturb issues in housekeeping, where hotels are charging the guests to not

police in redlands arrested their neighbor and found human remains under his home. neighbors now say the suspect hated that couple and that they feuded over a tree between their properties. >> a wild crime spree through san francisco landed multiple people in the hospital and ended with a suspect in a tree. all of this started at 830 yesterday morning with a stabbing at broderick and fell street, just a few blocks from the panhandle. police say the victim's injuries are life threatening, and the attacker drove off from there. police say the suspect tried to kill multiple people with his car, sending several people to the hospital, including a police officer. you can see one of the vehicles banged up there near carson and douglas streets in the eureka valley neighborhood. police say he ditched his car there after a chase, then climbed a tree. officers told neighbors to shelter in place as they tried to get him to surrender. they say he later jumped out of the tree and was arrested. >> eventually, they wheeled him out of the end of the block and

down the street into a fire with a fire ambulance there. >> that he was moaning and screaming and, carrying on. >> police say the suspect was hurt and went to the hospital and the north bay. >> the ntsb is investigating the cause of a deadly plane crash at gnoss field in novato. these are new photos. officials say a three seater plane crashed into a hangar during takeoff just before 4 p.m. saturday. the pilot was the only person aboard whose identity has not been released yet. the ntsb investigation will be focused on three primary areas the pilot, the aircraft, and the operating environment. >> from what i hear right, the plane sort of shimmied and went off the runway to the left and into this hangar, and all i could see was what was left was the tail of the plane.
