the day with mainly clear skies, and they'll get even sunnier as the day goes on. right now, we're looking at temperature readings of 59 here in the city. we've got mainly mid 60s around the bay shoreline, certainly over on the east bay from oakland down to hayward, inland temperatures right now inland east bay up to about 60 at concord and brentwood. so we're off to a mild start, except in some parts of the north bay where temperatures are only in the 40s and 50s. these are the forecast headlines. sunny to mild today. tomorrow through thursday, though, we expect quite a spike in heat. in fact, a moderate heat risk will prevail for those for that three day period because of triple digit inland temperatures. but for today, just mild to warm highs in the mid 60s. at the coast we'll see mid 70s around the bay shoreline and mainly low to mid 80s inland. probably could not ask for a nicer labor day weather wise. >> kumasi thank you spencer. new developments in the case of 40 niners. rookie wide receiver ricky pearsall, who was shot during an attempted robbery in san francisco's union square. our crew captured this caravan of cars leaving san francisco

general yesterday as pearsall was released from the hospital less than 24 hours after being shot in the chest. and this morning, we're learning more about what led up to this robbery gone wrong. now generating headlines around the world. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez joining us live in the studio with the details on this, gloria. >> good morning. kumasi the san francisco 40 niners confirmed that wide receiver ricky pearsall was released from the hospital yesterday afternoon as he continues to recover from a bullet wound to his chest. the 23 year old rookie was in union square on saturday afternoon after signing autographs at the cow palace. police say that a 17 year old suspect confronted pearsall and pulled out a gun. both were wounded during the robbery attempt. mayor london breed says extra officers were deployed to the area on sunday, and abc seven saw many in cruisers and on foot. breed denies that the shopping district was understaffed at the time of the shooting. on saturday, even a holiday weekend.

>> there are officers all around union square, more so than any other community in the city. >> the san francisco police officers association says in a statement. given our severe staffing crisis, however, there's only so much we can do. this is just another reason why we need to implement strategies to retain our veteran officers quickly. breed says that officers were on the scene in less than a minute, able to make an arrest. police say the crime was random and that pearsall was not targeted for being a minor. the suspect from tracy is now in custody. san francisco district attorney brooke jenkins says they expect to make a charging decision by tomorrow or wednesday, and they'll be fillled in the juvenile court. live in the studio, gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> gloria, thank you. this comes as data from the san francisco police department shows the city is seeing a drop in robberies. this year. but that's not stopping attacks from mayor. london breed's opponents in the race for mayor. abc seven news

reporter anser hassan has reaction from all the top candidates and puts this case in context. >> san francisco mayoral candidates are thankful that san francisco 49. ricky pearsall survived saturday's union square shooting and robbery, but with nine weeks left until election day, many say this only adds to voter concerns about public safety. this is underscored one of the primary issues in the race. >> one third of the voters polled put public safety as the top issue in san francisco. >> san francisco mayor london breed has been criticized for crime in the city, but on sunday she praised the police and its policies. the things that we put into place in the downtown union square area actually worked. >> it didn't prevent this from happening, but the response was pretty extraordinary from the police department. >> but some candidates for mayor are demanding change. mark farrell did not return requests for comment, but posted on x. enough is enough. if we want public safety in san francisco, then we need change in city

after the october 7th attack, when their son, seen here, was taken at that music festival, they spoke of the last text message they received from him. >> there were two messages in a row at 811. the first one said i love you, and the second one said, i'm sorry. so i immediately knew something terrible had happened. i tried immediately to call him and it rang and rang and rang. i wrote, are you okay? no answer. are you okay? let me know you're okay. >> the wife of israeli-american hostage keith segal, aviva, a former captive released in november, saying her husband, shown alive in hamas video in april, same time as goldberg-polin, could be killed at any moment. we got the proof of life. >> but you know what it's worth? nothing it's worth nothing. he could be killed now. he could be tortured now, starving and screaming for help. we need all the hostages home.

>> president biden and vice president harris have spoken to goldberg-polin parents to offer their condolences. this as israel says it believes there are still 101 hostages in gaza, including seven americans. and when abc news washington here in the bay area, an outpouring of support over the weekend for berkeley native hersh goldberg-polin and the five other hostages killed in gaza, hundreds of people gathered in berkeley last night for a memorial at his family's previous synagogue, congregation beth israel. the congregation wrote letters to the family and mourn the loss of one of berkeley's own. >> the pain that they've been going through for almost 11 months was so clear and obvious. and now to hear the most tragic of horrific news for them is really, really. it's so sad and we're wishing them and sending them all our strength. >> the goldberg-polin family now lives in israel. this week, a family friend and member of the congregation will travel to israel to deliver all of those

handwritten letters. >> today, the white house says president biden and vice president harris will be meeting in the situation room, along with the u.s. hostage deal negotiating team. they'll be discussing how to drive toward a deal to secure the release of the remaining 101 hostages currently being held by hamas. this is coming as both the president and the vice president spoke with the family of hersh goldberg-polin. in an earlier statement, president biden said in part, quote, i'm devastated and outraged. make no mistake, hamas leaders will pay for these crimes. vice president kamala harris posted about her call with the parents of goldberg-polin, saying in part, quote, my heart breaks for their pain and anguish. i told them as they mourn this terrible loss, they are not alone. our nation mourns with them. >> time for a look at our weather now, on this labor day morning and the sun is rising and we can see the sunrise clearly from our exploratorium camera. because of the absence of low clouds, this morning, 59 degrees here in san francisco.

look you all. can you believe this? a mustang drove through the wall of this phoenix couple's home. they were getting ready to sit down, have dinner, watch tv on the couch when the car just slammed into the living room. wow. can you believe after watching this that there were no injuries and the dogs that you see there minding their business to made it out without any apparent injuries, but they are going to go to the vet to make sure everyone is okay. yeah. police in phoenix say the driver was arrested and may have been impaired. oh my gosh, i'm just so happy they're okay. the influential san francisco group responsible for sought after political endorsements says its votes may be compromised. the harvey milk lgbtq democratic club says it learned of potential fraud last week. so many of the endorsements are still listed on their instagram

page. they range from the u.s. senate race to the san francisco board of education, prop k. the great highway plan. the group says its president stepped down saturday, and it's starting an investigation into the irregularities. >> california is honoring the one and only the legend himself, willie mays, by naming a portion of interstate 80 after him. the state legislature approved the plan a few days ago. mays died early this summer and was an iconic san francisco giants player. we all know mays was a hall of famer and was awarded the medal of freedom by president barack obama. the portion of that bay bridge that enters the city and leads to oracle park will be named after mays. the dedication has been approved and new signs will be paid for with private funding. >> the giants are raising helping to raise awareness for pediatric cancer. the team reached out to some young artists with pediatric cancer to draw portraits of players and staff. the portraits were done by patients of all ages. the

post. yesterday, his mom said the bullet that hit him missed all of his vital organs. abc seven news reporter j.r stone spoke with doctors at stanford and at ucsf who specialize in these types of injuries. >> 40 niners wide receiver ricky pearsall was taken by ambulance to the hospital saturday, suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. the area opposite his heart. he was released sunday, according to the niners. hours after his mother said online that the bullet hit him in the chest and exited through his back. >> if the bullet actually, you know, goes, you know, transects the chest, you know, it goes from the front to the back, you know, the chance of having a very serious injury is very high. and so, you know, frankly, you know, this football player was very lucky if indeed, you know, he was able to be discharged from the hospital, you know, within 24 hours. >> that's stanford's dean winslow, who was deployed to the middle east six times after nine over 11 as a flight surgeon and hospital commander in the air

national guard. he is not one of pearsall's doctors and has only seen the images we have seen, but winslow is very familiar with bullet wounds to the chest, and certainly this is the kind of injury that sadly, we would see commonly. >> you know, in soldiers, airmen, marines wounded in combat in iraq and afghanistan during my time when i served there. >> ucsf's jahan fahmy is medical director of the emergency department, also not one of pearsall's doctors, but well versed in injuries caused by guns in general. >> being shot somewhere in the torso in the chest area is a very high risk injury, you know, the biggest thing you worry about is an injury to the heart or one of the major arteries that comes off of the heart. usually those are either instantly fatal or very life threatening. >> the two doctors add that injuries to the lungs and spine can also be a huge danger, with the chest related shooting. pearsall's release, though, leads both to believe that the

injuries are likely not as severe, which could, and i repeat, could mean a recovery lasting weeks versus many months. doctor fahmy, going so far as saying a release from the hospital this quickly is rare. >> it's the minority of patients who can say that they have had that experience, that they've been shot in the chest and been able to walk out. a day later, i think that's extremely fortunate. >> j.r. stone abc seven news. >> doctor fahmy says he's also concerned about the psychological impact of this act of violence, and recommends treatment for that as well. make sure you stay with abc seven news for the latest on this developing story. you can get updates any time on abc seven news.com or on your abc seven news bay area app. >> police are still searching for a driver who ran away from police in san francisco after evading a traffic stop in oakland's clinton neighborhood. opd says officers attempted to stop the driver for a traffic violation just before 5:00 yesterday, right near the

intersection of ninth and international boulevard. now, that driver did not pull over, but instead started making their way to san francisco. police pursued the driver to the city. the driver then abandoned the car on o'farrell street, right near union square, before running away. >> a wild crime spree through san francisco landed multiple people in the hospital, and ended with the suspect in a tree. it started at 830 yesterday morning with a stabbing at broderick and fells streets, just a block from the panhandle, and police say the victim's injuries are life threatening. the attacker drove off. from there, police say the suspect tried to kill multiple people with his car. look at the damage there. sending several people to the hospital, including a police officer. this vehicle in particular is near carson and douglas streets in the eureka valley neighborhood. police say he ditched his car after there after a chase and climbed a tree. and officers told neighbors to shelter in place as they work to get him to surrender. they say he later

labor day here in the bay area. looking at our satellite radar composite image. upper level low, generating a nice onshore breeze. no clouds, though. very few. we've got mainly clear skies right now. 59 degrees here in san francisco around the bay shoreline. mainly upper 50s over the peninsula, but some mid 60s already over in the east on the east bay, the inland east bay, right now 59 to 60 degrees. it will warm up later in the day, and we've got some 40s and low 50s up in the north bay, which at the moment is our coolest region. these are the forecast headlines today, labor day, sunny and mild to warm, but the heat is going to crank up significantly tuesday through thursday. it will be warm to hot the next three days with a moderate heat risk because of triple digit temperature readings in our inland areas, and maybe up to about 90 degrees during this heat spike around the bay shoreline. but for today, lovely labor day weather, we expect sunny skies, high temperatures in the mid to upper 60s on the coast, mid 70s around the bay shoreline up in the north bay. low to mid 80s 80 at napa, 85 at santa rosa. inland east bay about 84 to 86 degrees, generally down in the south bay. look for highs of 81. san jose

that we're asking for in the in the next four years, by inflation numbers, we would still be considered poor as a hotel worker. >> this follows months of contract negotiations expected to last through tomorrow. hyatt and hilton have said they are committed to reaching a deal, but are also committed to serving customers during the work stoppage. >> the listeria outbreak from boar's head may get even worse. so far, 57 people have been hospitalized and nine people have died from the listeria outbreak. cdc officials warn that the incubation time for the disease can be up to two months. that means people who consumed boar's head meat in july could still be at risk. during an inspection of the meat plant, officials found mold, mildew and insects. there will be an investigation into the plant to see how the outbreak happened and why inspectors allowed the plant to function for so long. >> climate change is having an impact on rainforests where cocoa beans grow. so now a

california company is looking to other ways to grow cocoa. so california, cultured in west sacramento, is growing cocoa from cell cultures. and they've come up with a way to grow it indoors. the bean cells go into a large container of sugar water. so they reproduce quickly and the process takes weeks. instead of months. >> and we're basically developing the underlying technology that you could actually grow chocolate and coffee anywhere in the world without some of these exploitative or destructive practices. >> many entrepreneurs are betting on demand, growing faster than the supply of cocoa. the company plans to start selling the products next year. >> now to your money. morning money report that is santa clara based tech company intel is looking for ways to cut costs. according to reuters, the company is working on a potential plan. one idea includes selling businesses owned by intel, like altera. intel is reportedly struggling to play catch up with major

lights on, but they are telling people to minimize their water use to protect the septic system. >> we've had problems, you know, they already cut the gas off and cold showers. you get used to them. but the electricity is an entirely different thing. >> wow. socal edison says last week the movement damaged their equipment and started a fire. residents say they want more support from governor newsom, as well as the federal government. >> all right. how would you like to travel up and down the peninsula for less than the cost of a boba tea? that's how caltrain is promoting its new fare program to help young residents get around town. starting this month, caltrain will have $1 all zone one way youth fares for any riders 18 and under, and for $2. the mobile app with will basically have all zone day passes. caltrain says this is a permanent change and hopes this will improve accessibility and a lifelong habit of public transit use.
