around the world tonight as the family of hersh goldberg-polin lays him to rest. thousands gathering to remember the bay area native found murdered in gaza as israel faces increasing pressure to end the war with hamas. good evening. thanks for joining us. i'm julian glover and i'm dan ashley. >> the 23 year old is one of six hamas hostages found dead over the weekend, shattering his family's hopes of a return. >> today, a massive protest filled israel's streets, demanding the release of the remaining hostages and an end to that war. a widespread labor strike impacted airports, schools, banks and more. today, as a part of those protests, israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu is defending his commitment to the war, saying hamas will pay a heavy price for the deaths of those hostages. both sides are pointing fingers over months of failed fire negotiations. meanwhile president biden and vice president harris met with the u.s. team assisting in those negotiations. today, biden says netanyahu is not doing enough. we're not giving up.

>> we're going to continue to push as hard as we can. >> and a statement from hamas spokesperson today warned that more hostages would die if israel tries to rescue them through military operations instead of a cease fire deal. >> tens of thousands of people paid their respects to hersh goldberg-polin as he was laid to rest in israel today. abc seven news reporter lena howland has more on his funeral, and how people across the bay area are remembering him. >> i'm sorry, hersh, we failed you. we all failed you. >> a tearful apology from john poland, the father of berkeley native hersh goldberg-polin. 329 days after hersh was taken hostage at a music festival in gaza during the october 7th attacks, hersh was one of six hostages found dead in gaza on saturday. three of the six hostages, including hersh, were reportedly scheduled to be released in the first phase of a ceasefire proposal discussed in

july. instead, he was laid to rest at a jerusalem cemetery on monday, while tens of thousands came to pay their respects, including his parents. >> okay, so before i go now on your journey, i hope it's as good as the trips you dreamed about. because finally, my sweet boy, finally, finally, finally, finally. it's three. >> his parents, rachel and john, have led a high profile campaign to bring their son home. less than two weeks ago, his parents took the stage at the democratic national convention. >> it's really a gut punch that that call to bring hersh home ended in failure. and we're all in mourning right now. >> tyler gregory is the ceo of the jewish community relations council, and was there in chicago for hirsch's parents speech. >> what we need to remember is an american hostage was murdered. we all need to advocate for our representatives and our government to do everything they can, diplomatically and militarily, to bring the remaining hostages home alive.

>> sunday night, amid many tears and prayers, hundreds gathered at the congregation. beth israel in berkeley to mourn the loss of all six hostages killed on monday night. gregory will join other jewish community members and allies for a candlelight vigil in san francisco. >> in this moment of a lot of despair that people are feeling, we're finding strength in one another. >> his mother, rachel, ended many speeches over the past ten months with a direct message for her son by saying, we love you. stay strong. survive. at the funeral, she shared a similar message. >> hersh, there's one last thing i need you to do for us now. i need you to help us stay strong and i need you to help us survive. >> there are still 101 hostages remaining in gaza, including seven americans in berkley, lena howland, abc seven news. >> oakland police are investigating a deadly early

morning shooting. the mercury news reports. officers are trying to identify the victim. the man's body was found in the area of 74th avenue and hillside street near macarthur boulevard. it happened about 430 this morning. so far, no arrests have been made. >> in san francisco, there are new details about the shooting of forty-niners rookie ricky pearsall. the 23 year old is now at home recovering. thank goodness, after being shot in the chest this weekend during an attempted robbery at union square. now we're hearing from witnesses and the police sergeant who was the first to respond to the shooting. abc seven news reporter tim johns has been following this story very closely and is here with the very latest, tim. >> yeah. dan, the witness saw everything. the scuffle, the gunshots, and ricky pearsall on the ground being helped by the police. even with a front row seat to the shooting, though, his response to questions over san francisco safety may surprise you. john wendell says he was leaving his offices on san francisco's geary street saturday afternoontnessed sometr seen before. >> i saw two guys fighting about

20 yards away, 30 yards at the most. i thought, oh, great, you know, another punch up on the street and then bang, bang, bang. >> that scuffle and shooting wendell witnessed involved 40 niners, rookie and first round draft pick ricky pearsall. pearsall was shot through the chest after a 17 year old attempted to rob him while he was walking down the street near union square. the incident happening just hours after he appeared at an autograph signing event just miles away. >> it was at the moment, just simply shocking. it wasn't until later that i began to shake. >> wendell tells me the entire encounter happened rapidly and was over within a minute or so, he says. shortly after, the gunshots rang out, he saw police who were stationed nearby running towards the scene. >> the police response was fantastic. they had that place swarmed. >> the first officer to arrive was sergeant harrell. sergeant harrell is being described as a hero who may have saved pearsall's life. our colleagues at abc news spoke with her on

monday. harrell, describing hearing the gunshots and then running to find pearsall on the ground in a pool of blood. to abc news reporter melissa ardon. i used my right hand because this is my strong hand to seal the wound. >> sorry. and then i put it up here to hold that. >> the sergeant says while they waited for paramedics to arrive. she knew keeping pearsall conscious and calm was paramount. she detailed some of their conversation during those critical minutes. >> i know you don't know me, but please trust me. god is with us. it's not your time, okay? it's not your time. i want you to continue to breathe. okay? >> thanks to pearsall's description, sfpd was able to identify and arrest the suspect. the nfl rookie is now out of the hospital and recovering at home. but the reputational hit the incident has on san francisco may be harder to recover from. on monday morning, we went back to union square to talk to tourists about their perception of the city following the shooting. almost all of them told us they had heard that the city was unsafe ahead of their visits. that included billy seba and his family, who were visiting from texas. it was

dirty, >> a lot of i mean, like you hear about crime and stuff like that. >> seba says despite what he had heard, he's been pleasantly surprised by san francisco. he tells us he and his family have enjoyed their time in the city by the bay, and would be interested in returning. he also says, while unfortunate, he thinks the piersoll incident could happen in any major city. >> i work in downtown houston and it's a lot worse in downtown houston. >> that opinion is also backed to a large degree by statistics. according to the abc7 news neighborhood safety tracker. the robbery rate for the entire city of san francisco over the last 12 months is down 4% from the previous four year average. and in the central district, which includes union square, it drops even further to 6% less than the previous average. now, despite that data, though, there's no question that san francisco is still dealing with a perception problem. whether it's true or not is one thing, but the shooting definitely does not help in the studio. tim johns, abc seven news.

>> it does not, but at least he's okay, thank goodness. tim, thanks very much. well, pearsall will miss at least the first four games of the season because of this shooting. today, the forty-niners placed the rookie wide receiver on the non-football injury list. that means the earliest he would be eligible to return would be week five, when the niners host the cardinals. >> we are learning more about a house fire in the north bay that killed a woman and a dog overnight. crews responded to the home on alta vista avenue in mill valley just before 1:00 this morning. investigators say a woman with disabilities and several dogs were trapped inside of the home. that woman's remains were found inside of the building. a neighbor says the victim would often be seen in the neighborhood with her dogs. >> seen her quite a bit. she was a regular fish. she lived here for years. i've been here 25, and i think she showed up shortly after that and some new information just coming in here. >> the victim lived in the home with a roommate who was not

injured in that fire. that roommate called 911 about the fire, saying there was someone inside who could not get out on her own. firefighters were able to rescue four dogs from that house. >> coming up here, 10,000 hotel workers spending labor day on the picket line. the nationwide strike involving employees here in the bay area. and what they're demanding. >> plus, vice president kamala harris spends the day with union workers as she campaigns across key battleground states. and we'll show you the latest presidential poll when abc

>> striking hotel workers on the move around union square in san francisco. today we show the bosses how we celebrate labor day in this city. 2000 bay area hospitality workers walking off the job as contract talks stalled between top hotel chains like hyatt, hilton and marriott and the workers union. this is about affordability. >> we've been bargaining for months. we're very, very far apart. our negotiating committee has been, like, deeply insulted and offended by what management has put on the table. it's not enough for us to be able to survive here. and it's unacceptable. >> gregoria cabrera works at the palace hotel. she says she wants better wages to support her family. >> it's expensive. everything. transportation, food. pay the mortgage. everything is expensive in california. >> this labor action is part of a national movement. at least 10,000 workers are striking in eight american cities, demanding to share in what they say are record profits. >> this is an industry that has

been that has been coming back from the pandemic. they've been making their profits fine, but they haven't shared any of that with us. >> in response, hilton hotels saying we remain committed to negotiating in good faith to reach fair and reasonable agreements that are beneficial to both our valued team members and our hotels. hyatt saying we are disappointed that unite here has chosen to strike, while hyatt remains willing to negotiate. hyatt hotels have contingency plans in place to minimize impact on hotel operations related to potential strike activity. on monday, it appeared to be business as usual inside san francisco's grand hyatt, but some food amenities were not available. it's unclear if it was strike related and what kind of power workers say they'll be back to work wednesday. the union says future strikes are possible in more cities, including oakland. >> our members are committed to fighting and doing whatever it

takes to win a fair contract here. and we could we could be out on strike again in san francisco. >> cornell, bernard, abc seven news. >> today's strike extended into the south bay. workers in downtown san jose rallied at the signia by hilton, which used to be the fairmont. employees at the doubletree also went on strike for the second day today. >> vice president and presidential candidate kamala harris reached out to union workers in key battleground states today. this all comes as new polling shows the race for the white house remains close. sunday's abc news ipsos poll finds harris has a slight lead over former president trump. she did not see a boost after the democratic national convention. robert f kennedy jr. s departure from the race and endorsement of trump also had little impact. americans still trust the former president more on issues including the economy, inflation and immigration. harris has an edge on questions of mental and physical fitness for the presidency, as well as protecting democracy. abc news reporter perry russom takes us on the campaign trail.

according to triple a, the peak congestion was a short time ago at 445. still not looking too bad out there, right now. if you have not hit the roads just yet, you should try to wait until after 8:00 tonight. if you're planning to head out tomorrow, the best time to leave is after 1 p.m. with the window from 8 a.m. to noon expected to be the worst time tomorrow. >> governor newsom is behind a new push to lower gas prices. he's called lawmakers into a special session after democrats in the assembly pushed back on his efforts to pass his latest energy package. californians pay the highest rates at the pump in the nation. that's according to triple a, the statewide average per gallon is $4.65. that's compared to the national average of $3.33. the cheapest gas in the bay area, right now is in

san jose at 469 a gallon, still well above the national average. >> yeah, we're used to it. >> unfortunately, we are right. it's so true. >> well, it is time to get a check of the forecast. now taking a live look outside and there is a spare the air alert that's been issued for tomorrow and wednesday. >> yeah, it's heating up again. so for more on the air quality and what we can expect this week, let's go to abc seven news meteorologist frances dinglasan. frances. >> yeah. dan. julian, get ready for a big warm up. we're talking a 5 to 15 degree temperature jump from today. it's just gorgeous outside. perfect for the labor day holiday. perfect outdoor weather, barbecue weather. and it is quiet on live doppler seven. not a cloud in the sky, right now. there is a bit of a sea breeze and that's what's helping to keep temperatures slightly below normal in some spots in san francisco. winds are at 16mph, gusting up to 2120 nine miles per hour at sfo, 21 in half moon bay and you see the wind blowing some of those palm trees. right now in san francisco, it's 67 degrees. oakland and hayward, 74

degrees san jose, a little bit warmer at 78, and then half moon bay, where the beaches. it's in the 60s. 66 right there. also from mount tam, you can see how gorgeous it looks all the way south across the bay. we're still hanging on to some 80s right now in santa rosa and fairfield 83. also concord 81, napa and livermore 79. right no, petaluma at 72 degrees. it's a gorgeous at the santa cruz beach. and if you can head to the beach for the next few days, it's going to be really perfect weather. so tonight, expect breezy conditions. it will be clear and mild. there could be some patchy, patchy low clouds developing overnight, but then tomorrow plenty of sunshine early on the sizzling summer heat begins and this means moderate heat risk, especially for those areas inland where we're going to see triple digit temperatures over the next few days. so for tomorrow, many of us under low to moderate heat risk. the area in orange is where we see the more moderate heat risk. and then this will have a cumulative effect. and we

could see more areas on wednesday with more moderate heat risk. so check out these temperatures tomorrow. almost everyone between 90 to 100 degrees except right at the beaches. so even san francisco is going to get to 82 oakland, 88, san jose 94. but then in the north bay, we're seeing lots of mid 90s like san rafael, 95, santa rosa, napa. check out the triple digits. fairfield livermore near 100, also ukiah and even half moon bay. and the beaches will be in the 70s to near 80 degrees as we show you live shot from the east bay hills. so as dan mentioned, the spare the air alert has been issued tuesday and wednesday, but the areas that will suffer the most are the inland east bay areas and the santa clara valleys with poor air quality expected right now, air quality is good, so tonight, open up the windows, let that cool air and cleaner air in temperatures will drop into the mid 50s overnight to some low 60s out there, possibly in the interior areas like antioch. also, i just want

to jump ahead to wednesday. now inland areas are going to warm up even more. we could be over 100 degrees. fairfield 104, antioch 102. even concord and livermore over 100 degrees. and notice that sticks around through thursday. it's not until friday where things finally get below 100 for those inland areas. so that includes you, dan. i know where you live. it's going to get really hot. so here's the accuweather seven day forecast. it's pool weather if you can, especially after schoo. sizzling heat. basically for the next few days even still warm through the week. and then really more relief for next weekend. >> okay, it's going to be steamy next few days for sure. yes >> francis personal forecast. it's a nice touch. thank you friends in high places. appreciate it francis. well, great wolves are making a big return across california. our partners at the bay area news group report the gray wolf population is six times bigger than it was five years ago. fish and wildlife officials say wolves are now living in nine counties all across the state, from the oregon border to the

mountains around tahoe and the southern sierra. the population started growing again in 2011, when a lone wolf wandered in from oregon. now we're up to 44 wolves total. >> a whale who made worldwide headlines over rumors he may have been a russian spy has died. norwegian public media reports a father and son found the floating remains of the beluga whale. the whale was first spotted in norway in 2019, wearing a harness with what appeared to be a mount for a camera. well, that equipment sparked the moscow rumors. over the years, the whale visited several norwegian coastal towns, always very friendly with people. researchers are now investigating exactly how the whale died. >> still to come here, some of the best cyclists in the state racing one of the bay area's oldest
