weekend's high profile shooting in union square. good evening. thank you for joining us i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm julian glover. tonight we're getting this up close firsthand account of what happened from the san francisco police sergeant who jumped into action when i heard the. >> and it was so loud. >> fireworks, skateboarders or gunshots? those were the possibilities. sergeant joel harrell considered as she ran toward the sound that turned a normal saturday into one that would make international headlines. the officer on patrol near union square discovered 40 niners. rookie ricky pearsall shot after a scuffle with a robber. >> seeing the blood just coming down his face. and then he's he's realizing he's probably life threatening injuries. you know, i had told him out there, be strong like you are on the field. i go, you're going to you got this. >> sergeant harrell told abc news reporter melissa don. she held her hand over pearsall's wound as they waited for help. >> i go, you hear that siren?

that's the ambulance. is coming for you. >> it's almost here to keep him alert. harrell rattled off questions asking pearsall what happened and what his attacker looked like when the rookie asked if he was going to die. harrell prayed with him. >> i know you don't know me, but please trust me. god is with us. it's not your time. okay it's not your time. i want you to continue to breathe, okay? just breathe. >> video shows the sergeant holding a shirt over pearsall's bloodied chest all the way to the ambulance. the wide receiver is now recovering at home and will miss at least the first four games of the season. >> i'm telling you, it's the hand of god. it's the hand of god. >> harrell has served 25 years with sfpd. she's the daughter of a retired san francisco teacher who says she lights candles for protection and peace, something she provided in the aftermath of violence. >> being a mother doing this job for as long as i've done, you know, i know i need to maintain my composure. and i just did my best. >> doing her best and saving a life with love for her city.

israel over the deaths of hamas hostages. the crowds scuffled with officers outside prime minister benjamin netanyahu's residence, as they called for a deal to release the remaining hostages. netanyahu said in a news conference today that he is committed to that goal, but unwilling to concede a military presence in gaza. that is a sticking point for hamas. and in san francisco today, the jewish community held a vigil for the six hostages killed, including hersh goldberg-polin. the israeli military recovered his body on saturday. the 23 year old, who spent some of his young childhood in berkeley, was laid to rest today. his parents spoke before the crowd of thousands in jerusalem. >> i'm sorry, hersh you. we all failed you. >> finally, my sweet boy. finally, finally, finally, finally. he is free. >> abc news reports. goldberg-polin was among the hostages who would have been

released under a proposed ceasefire deal. there are still 101 hostages in gaza, including seven americans. >> in all of that comes as president biden spoke with israel's prime minister benjamin netanyahu tonight, saying he's not doing enough to reach a hostage deal. biden was with vp kamala harris in the situation room alongside the u.s. negotiation team. white house officials say they're working around the clock and the president is considering pushing toward for a final deal this week. if it falls through, it could bring an end to the u. s. led negotiations. >> and kamala harris, also side by side with president biden today in his home state of pennsylvania. the vice president was working to win over voters this labor day at their first joint campaign event since the democratic national convention. biden touts himself as the most pro-labor president in history, and he's trying to pass that legacy on to harris. >> he says the moral compass of a saint this woman knows what

conditions. >> all right. let's continue to talk about things outside, because tomorrow is the first day of a spare the air alert. rising temperatures, a lack of wind and car exhaust are all making for really a smoggy combination. so you're asked to reduce your driving and limit air pollution tomorrow and wednesday as much as possible. abc seven news meteorologist frances dinglasan is tracking that and our weather in your 24 hour accuweather forecast. >> frances. yeah, that's right dan. and luckily, the good news is, is we don't expect to get a red flag warning in the next couple of days. despite that, spare the air alert. here's a live view right now from sutro. so we can see clear across san francisco and across the bay. we have mostly clear skies tonight. it's going to be cooling down to some mid 50s in some areas, but tomorrow when we wake up there will be a few low clouds, a very thin shallow layer at best. temperatures generally in the 60s will be warming up significantly. temperatures will be 5 to 15 degrees above average in some spots, so inland areas

hitting triple digits tomorrow around the bay. look for upper 80s even some low 90s out there and at the beaches. if you can head to the beach, it's going to be mid 70s. i'll let you know how long this triple digit heat lasts. dan. >> okay, frances, thanks a lot. we'll touch base again shortly. of course. getting hot here, but in southern california they are baking in back to back heat waves. fall is a week away, but temperatures in the southland remain in the upper 90s low one hundreds people are saving their more active plans for the early mornings and the evenings just to try to keep cool. it's just baking during the midday, a firefighters and residents keeping an eye on extremely dry conditions. of course, there is always a concern of a spark and a wildfire. >> with the labor day weekend now over a state lawmaker is wanting to build a better bay area by pumping the brakes. this idea of a speed solution is now sitting on governor newsom's desk, waiting to be signed into law. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez takes a closer

look at the push to get us californians to all slow down. >> speeding related traffic deaths are on the rise in california. state senator scott wiener hopes his bill will change that. >> when we have the level of death on our roads, more than 4000 people a year in california and escalating, it's gone up in the last five years. >> that's a policy choice. >> senate bill 9.61 is heading to governor newsom's desk. it would mandate speed warning technology in cars. >> it requires that for new cars starting in 2030, have to be equipped with existing technology that exists now that alerts people just one alert if they are going more than ten miles an hour over the speed limit. >> if this bill is signed by the governor, california will be the first state in the country to enact this kind of safety equipment. opponents say there are a lot of problems with it. >> speed limits are often ten

miles an hour or more lower than what? the way the roadway is built. so this is a system that would be constantly beeping for people all, all day long as they're driving. >> members of the national motorists association feel imposing safety requirements for cars should be left to the federal government. that's where it should be debated. >> that's where it should be decided on. >> we spoke with drivers to get their thoughts. would an alert system encourage them to slow down? >> i would think it would be something that's kind of annoying if you're in the highway, because we just drove from la and no one is really driving the speed limit that's up right now. i mean, everyone's going probably about 80 to 85. i think it would work like in residential areas maybe, or by schools. >> sb 9.61 is supported by the ntsb and faa. we're not physically stopping them. >> if people choose to speed, that's their choice and it creates risk and they might get a ticket for it. but the least we can do is make sure that people are aware immediately if they are driving more than ten miles an hour over the speed

limit. >> the governor has until the end of the month to sign or veto the bill in the south bay, lauren martinez, abc seven news on this labor day, california lawmakers seem to be cooling on the influence of labor unions after last year's hot labor summer, as we saw strikes from hollywood to fast food to health care last summer, lawmakers supported several major policy wins for unions. >> no such successes this year. the legislative session came to an end saturday with the failure of a number of labor backed bills, a plan to give unemployment benefits to striking workers did not pass. neither did labor supported bills to support grocery jobs over self checkout, expand protection for workers on the picket line, or limit the government's use of temporary contracts. today, we show the bosses how we celebrate labor day in this city. >> thousands of hotel workers walked out for the second day today, part of a massive strike

in cities across the country. workers rallied around union square in san francisco over stalled contract talks between the union and top hotel chains including hyatt, hilton and marriott. the union wants better wages and health care, plus a more manageable workload. >> this is an industry that has been that has been coming back from the pandemic. they've been making their profits fine, but they haven't shared any of that with us. >> hilton hotels said in a statement they are committed to negotiating in good faith. hyatt called the strike disappointing and said they remain willing to negotiate inside of san francisco's grand hyatt. it appeared to be business as usual, though some food amenities were not available. well, today's strike extended into the south bay as well. workers in downtown san jose. they rallied at the nearby hilton, which used to be the fairmont hotel. employees at the doubletree also went on strike for the second day today. workers say they'll be back to

today at levi's stadium against the jets right here on abc. seven but tonight, some longtime season ticket holders are debating how long they're going to keep those tickets. nearly a thousand fans have signed a petition over the tough tailgating rules. abc seven news reporter j.r stone has details for you. new at 11. one. two. three. >> three. >> there's nothing like a traditional nfl tailgate. 40 niners style, but some of the niners most diehard season ticket holders are frustrated as we are now less than a week away from opening night kickoff and this that. >> they're splitting up. the tailgates are split. it's like you're splitting up a family. >> joe leonard of the niner empire group says that he and others who are involved in the big tailgates have received emails from the 40 niners that certain rules will be enforced at levi's stadium parking lots. that includes no loud music and enforcing what is called directed parking. a parking

process that is similar to what you'd se at a theme park with vehicles being waved in. levi's stadium website says that directed parking maximizes the use of available spaces. leonard says he was told by those with the niners that it helps those arriving later closer to kickoff. >> we pay $3,000 per seat. we have three. it's so it's and now now i can't park next to my friend. and that's why we have the early tailgate. >> some season ticket holders are often given early tailgate parking privileges, but that appears to be changing. >> and they've cut back on the early tailgate placards. also, i know half of the people in joe's group who got the early tailgate did not receive it this year. >> anyone who has walked from this blue lot on a sunday will tell you it takes at least 30 minutes to get to the stadium. those we talked with said $200 million of renovations were announced at levi's, but nothing

summer, spreading far and wide, but it's finally beginning to calm down. this season was one of the periods of highest transmission yet, according to wastewater data in santa clara county, and it rates drastically higher compared to last summer. well, now we are seeing steep declines in wastewater numbers, cdc predicts a better covid outlook this winter than last. >> all that immunity. hopefully means that we'll have a better winter than we did last summer. with lower rates of cases, we're going to have the other viruses flu and rsv, but hopefully covid will have done its work. unfortunately, during the summe, even so, experts say covid is still unpredictable and immunity makes for better defense. >> the new vaccine came out last week and anyone can get it, but it is most recommended for the elderly, the immunocompromised and those with comorbidities. well, at the end of this month, you will be able to get covid tests for free from the government. you can get four per

household from covid test.gov. we did check today and they are not yet available, so check back tomorrow. >> a new mission to the titanic is documenting the decay of that iconic ship. a georgia based company has salvage rights to the wreck and completed an expedition this summer. their cameras captured the decay of the ship's upper deck in the vibrant blue water, with a chunk of the iconic railing missing. they also found a two foot tall bronze statue of diana, the roman goddess of the hunt. a mission 40 years ago first found that statue, though no one has spotted it again since. the crew found it sitting upright in the sand. >> remarkable images so clear too. >> i know right? >> beautiful. well, some very special frogs got airlifted to the sierra nevada. >> are you ready for this? the oakland zoo recently released 70 frogs by helicopter into mountain lakes. >> the mountain yellow legged frogs have been inundated by the chytrid fungus. it's devastated

you need to know. definitely spare the air tomorrow and wednesday. we are expecting poor air quality for the inland east bay and also the santa clara valley. moderate air quality elsewhere for at least the next couple of days, temperatures are really going to spike. you'll notice triple digits in our inland areas like fairfield, livermore, even concord and antioch. at 99 degrees. san francisco getting up to 82. oakland 88. san jose very warm at 94. lots of mid 90s through the north bay to like san rafael, napa at 94 degrees and also tomorrow there is low to moderate heat risk. but check out wednesday. some areas pop up into the red. that's the higher heat risk in some of the interior locations. and that's because some temperatures are going to come up even more for wednesday. in fact, some inland areas may be above 100 like concord 103, fairfield 104, 104. in ukiah. so livermore 103 notice around the bay will also

see lots of low 90s and some upper 80s. now does start to cool down a little bit along the beaches like half moon bay 73 on thursday, but we're still going to hang to on that triple digit heat for inland areas, so that's something to watch out for. it looks like friday is when we finally drop below 100 degrees for interior locations and the tri valley, and then we'll see more seconds around the bay. so there's also a heat advisory for solano county. temperatures there could get up to 107 degrees and the risk of heat related illnesses is more concerning for solano county because overnight lows will only drop into the mid 60s and mid 70s, so it's harder to recover. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. so sizzling heat starts tomorrow. temperatures really climb up compared to what we saw today. sweltering heat continues scorching whatever you want to call it. really more comfortable. not until the

alive after being shot in the chest. a 17 year old was trying to rob the niners. rookie struggle ensued. both ended up getting shot. the bullet went through pearsall's chest, exiting his back. he's fortunate that bullet did not hit any major organs. one doctor we spoke with said it's extremely unusual for a person who was shot in the chest to leave the hospital the next day. 49 ers kick off a new season. exactly one week from today. and there is no indication that trent williams will be playing for the niners. he's been holding out all training camp. hard to imagine him playing after missing all of camp just getting up off the couch. williams wants more money and more guaranteed money. the 40 niners have got to get him signed asap and very much on the lighter side. the niners enjoyed their last weekend off before the start of the season. what do they do? it's their annual end of training camp party at coach shanahan's house. the partiers, including rapper rick ross and kyle looking very different than what we see on the sidelines. ross posted videos and pictures from the party. sports on abc seven, sponsored
