remember a berkeley man how his parents are reacting to his death. >> and taking a live look outside this morning, a spare the air alert is in effect today as parts of the bay area will see triple digit temperatures. spencer is here with what you need to know. good morning everybody. it's tuesday, september 3rd. >> yes, we're starting with a check of our forecast with spencer. >> well, the heat is on the next few days, as you mentioned. stephanie, spare the air alert. in effect, the next two days. and we've got a heat advisory that will be in effect from tomorrow morning through thursday evening. but let's take a look at what's goingn now. low pressure that had brought us cooling. onshore flow is moving away. so it's cooling. influence is leaving. high pressure will build in and it's going to be quite hot the next three days. right now the wind is calm. so that's not helpful to keeping temperatures down. however, temperatures right now are in a comfortable range. for now. we've got temperatures mainly in the mid to upper 50s from san francisco to oakland, down around the bay shoreline, up into the north bay. we've got

upper 40s to low 50s right now inland, east bay, upper 40s to mid 50s. so it's comfortable now. but later in the day, check out the high temperatures coming our way. we'll see 100 degrees at fairfield, concord and livermore, 99 at antioch, around the bay shoreline, 88 at oakland, 90 at san mateo, 82 will be the high here in san francisco today. and we'll see low to mid 70s on the on the coast. so as we look ahead once again, a reminder spare the air for today and tomorrow with moderate air quality in many locations. but the inland east bay and santa clara valley will have poor air quality. let's get a check on traffic with amanda. yeah. >> good morning. spencer, a sleepy and clear commute here across the bay area, which is the good news. we're going to first take a look at our emeryville cam, showing you the east shore freeway. of course, headlights are headed west. highway four to san francisco. that drive will take you 26 minutes. and the good news is, as you make your way across the span, no issues. as you see on the upper deck. our overall map showing plenty of green that typical slowdown along the altamont pass has already started as you see indicated

there, 44 minutes is what it will take you to get from tracy to dublin, san rafael to san francisco. 16 minutes and then a 14 minute drive to get you from antioch to concord. stephanie. >> all right. amanda, thank you. new developments in the shooting of 40 niners. rookie ricky pearsall. we're getting a firsthand account of what happened from the san francisco police sergeant who jumped into action. abc seven news anchor julian glover has more on how she helped pearsall. moments after this shooting. >> when i heard the and it was so loud, fireworks, skateboarders or gunshots? >> those were the possibilities. sergeant joel harrell considered as she ran toward the sound that turned a normal saturday into one that would make international headlines. the officer on patrol near union square discovered 40 niners. rookie ricky pearsall shot after a scuffle with a robber. >> seeing the blood just coming down his face. and then he's he's realizing he's probably life threatening injuries. you know, i had told him out there,

be strong like you are on the field. i go, you're going to you got this. >> sergeant harrell told abc news reporter melissa oden. she held her hand over pearsall's wound as they waited for help. >> you hear that siren? that's the ambulance. it's coming for you. >> it's almost here to keep him alert. harrell rattled off questions, asking pearsall what happened and what his attacker looked like when the rookie asked if he was going to die, harrell prayed with him. i know you don't know me, but please trust me. >> god is with us. it's not your time, okay? it's not your time. i want you to continue to breathe, okay? just breathe. >> video shows the sergeant holding a shirt over pearsall. bloody chest all the way to the ambulance. the wide receiver is now recovering at home and will miss at least the first four games of the season. >> i'm telling you, it's the hand of god. it's the hand of god. >> harrell has served 25 years with sfpd. she's the daughter of a retired san francisco teacher who says she lights candles for protection and peace, something she provided in the aftermath of

seven news data team. you can find it all on the front page of our website, abc seven news.com. >> developing news now in the israel-hamas war. president biden says israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu is not doing enough to reach a deal to free the remaining hostages and achieve a ceasefire in gaza. the president and vice president met in the situation room yesterday with top u.s. negotiators. abc news has learned the president is considering putting forward a final deal this week. if it falls through, it could mean an end of u. s. led negotiations. now the president says he has a plan to speak with netanyahu about his handling of the war. amanda. negotiations over a cease fire are reaching a critical point now. >> yes. and tensions over the war have certainly been rising in israel. yesterday, tens of thousands of people took to the streets. much of the country was shut down after a nationwide labor strike was called. protesters are demanding netanyahu reach a deal to save the remaining hostages held by hamas. he says his government

was close to bringing home six hostages, whose deaths were revealed over the weekend. that includes berkeley native hersh goldberg-polin. but in a new statement, hamas is suggesting it has a new policy of killing hostages that israel tries to rescue through force. netanyahu claims hamas has refused to hold genuine negotiations, and he hit back at president biden, saying no one will preach to him on this issue. back to you at the desk, kumasi. >> thank you. amanda in san francisco. the jewish community held a vigil for the six hostages killed, including hersh goldberg-polin. the israeli military recovered his body on saturday. the 23 year old, who spent some of his young childhood in berkeley, was laid to rest yesterday. his parents spoke before the crowd of thousands in jerusalem. >> i'm sorry, hersh, we you. we all failed you. >> finally, my sweet boy. finally finally, finally, finally. he is free.

>> abc news reports. goldberg-polin was among the hostages who would have been released under a proposed ceasefire deal. there are still 101 hostages in gaza, including several americans. >> happening now. fire crews are racing to contain a wildfire, forcing evacuations north of lake tahoe. the bear fire is burning hundreds of acres an hour in sierra county, threatening the community of sierra brooks. it started just after 2 p.m. yesterday and has already scorched more than 1300 acres. this morning there is no containment. that part of the northern california border was under a red flag warning for strong winds and dry conditions. spence. >> yeah, we may have elevated fire c next few days. stephanie, as we have a little bit of a heat wave coming our way. low pressure pulling away from us. that had brought us a nice cooling onshore flow the last couple of days. high pressure is now building in. check out how calm the winds

are. very very light and it's going to start heating up today. right now though, it's pretty comfortable. 58 degrees in san francisco and oakland, 59 at hayward 61, san jose 54. redwood city and a cool 48 at half moon bay. looking down from mount tam. a clear view looking out on the bay right now in the absence of any significant marine layer. 51 degrees in santa rosa 48, petaluma 51 in napa. fairfield 5255 at livermore. concord 58 degrees. let's check out our forecast headlines today through thursday. we will experience some sizzling summer heat. triple digit temperatures in our inland areas, bringing with it, of course, the risk of heat related illnesses. and friday, through sunday we can expect a gradual cooling trend. but for this afternoon, look for highs up to about 100 degrees in many of our inland east bay locations like fairfield, concord and livermore. 99 at antioch, right around the bay shoreline, highs will reach up to about 90 degrees at san mateo today. down in the south bay. low 90s in the north bay up mid to upper 90s generally, and a heat advisory will be in effect from 11 a.m. tomorrow to 11 p.m. thursday for

today, amanda advocates are putting pressure to approve an expansion banning right turns on red lights. >> kumasi. according to city

documents, transit leaders will not vote on the expansion of no turn on red. today, but advocates say they will be attending today's sfmta board of directors meeting to push for decision makers to approve the policy. the vote on this no turn on red expansion to cover the entire city was delayed last month. back in august, the board discussed whether a citywide ban was needed or if the rule should be expanded to areas where there are a lot of crashes. there was also a desire for more feedback from the community. according to sustainable transportation advocate luke bornheimer, more than one 1100, i should say people have signed a petition for a citywide ban. he says san francisco would be the second largest city in the u.s. to have a citywide, no turn on red policy in place. as of right now, the city has already banned right turns on red lights at around 200 intersections in downtown, and the tenderloin. as the mta says, priority areas for the expansion could be parts of the mission and nob hill. back

to you at the desk. all right. >> amanda, thanks. with the labor day weekend now over, a state lawmaker is wanting to build a better bay area by pumping the brakes. this idea of a speed solution is now sitting on governor newsom's desk waiting to be signed into law. abc seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez takes a closer look. speeding related traffic deaths are on the rise in california. state senator scott wiener hopes his bill will change that. >> when we have the level of death on our roads, more than 4000 people a year in california and escalating, it's gone up in the last five years. that's a policy choice. >> senate bill 9.61 is heading to governor newsom's desk. it would mandate speed warning technology in cars. >> it requires that for new cars starting in 2030, have to be equipped with existing technology that exists now. that alerts people just one alert if they are going more than ten miles an hour over the speed

limit. >> if this bill is signed by the governor, california will be the first state in the country to enact this kind of safety equipment. opponents say there are a lot of problems with it. >> speed limits are often ten miles an hour or more lower than what? the way the roadway is built. so this is a system that would be constantly beeping for people all, all day long as they're driving. >> members of the national motorists association feel imposing safety requirements for cars should be left to the federal government. >> that's where it should be debated. that's where it should be decided on. >> we spoke with drivers to get their thoughts. would an alert system encourage them to slow down? >> i would think it would be something that's kind of annoying if you're in the highway, because we just drove from la and no one is really driving the speed limit that's up right now. i mean, everyone's going probably about 80 to 85. i think it would work like in residential areas maybe, or by schools. >> sb 961 is supported by the ntsb and faa. we're not physically stopping them. >> if people choose to speed,

that's their choice and it creates risk. and they might get a ticket for it. but the least we can do is make sure that people are aware immediately if they are driving more than ten miles an hour over the speed limit. >> the governor has until the end of the month to sign or veto the bill. in the south bay, lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> new developments on that deadly plane crash in novato over the weekend. the abc station in redding is reporting the pilot, who died was a long standing kidney doctor there named jeffrey crowley. a local pilot confirmed his death, and officials say the plane was registered to him as well. crawling was the only one on board when the plane went down at novell in novato. the ntsb is investigating the cause of the crash and report is expected within 30 days. >> covid has had a busy summer, spreading far and wide, but it's finally starting to calm down. wastewater data in santa clara county shows this season was one

of the periods of highest transmission, and at rates drastically higher compared to last summer. now we are seeing steep declines in wastewater numbers. the cdc predicts a better covid outlook this winter compared to last. >> all that immunity hopefully means that we'll have a better winter than we did last summer. with lower rates of cases. we're going to have the other viruses flu and rsv, but hopefully covid will have done its work. unfortunately during the summer. >> even so, experts say covid is still unpredictable and immunity makes for the best defense. the new vaccine came out last week and anyone can get it now. it's most recommended for the elderly and people who are immunocompromised. at the end of this month, you'll be able to get covid tests for free from the government. you can get four per household from covidtests.gov. >> a new idea for an old ship in philadelphia. conservationists are floating the idea of a new

september 12th. >> all right. we're used to seeing them on 4th of july, but it was a new battle on labor day, bay area native joey chestnut conquered another hot dog eating contest against his rival takeru kobayashi. now chestnut, 883 hot dogs in ten minutes, shattering his previous world record of 76. the competitive eating legend was banned from this year's nathan's coney island hot dog eating contest, held annually on the 4th of july. nathan's had beef with him after he took a sponsorship deal with redwood city based impossible foods. so i get the idea is to always eat more. beat your previous record, right. but 83, at what point are you going to just draw the line? >> how long does it take him to recover from that? i mean, he can't feel good at the end of that, right? >> oh, i know if maybe his body is used to it at this point. >> well, i guess so. certainly more than mine would be mine either. >> i can't even watch it. i don't know, i just close my eyes. >> i can't watch it either.

right now, though, i'm watching some really hot rising temperatures. we've got some serious heat coming our way. not yet, but over the next. starting this afternoon. next few days. low pressure. moving to our north. right now had brought us a nice cooling onshore breeze the last couple of days or so. it's moving out. high pressure is building in the winds are very, very light at the moment, so there's no cooling influence. however, current temperature readings are in the comfort zone. they haven't started to rise very much yet. we have upper 50s right now in san francisco, oakland and hayward. 61 at san jose, 54 degrees. redwood city, 46 at half moon bay. here's a view from mount tam looking down onto the bay. this view is unobstructed by any morning fog. 51 degrees right now at napa and santa rosa. 48 petaluma. low 50s at fairfield, mid to upper 50s at livermore and concord. and as we look across the embarcadero, we'll check out our forecast headlines today through thursday. we can experience we will experience some sizzling summer heat. triple digit temperatures in our inland areas with the risk of heat related illnesses with that kind of excessive heat. and friday through sunday, we can expect a gradual cooling trend. finally but for this afternoon,

look for highs at or maybe even slightly above 100 degrees in many inland east bay areas, 100 likely at livermore, concord, fairfield, 99 at antioch. that's almost 100 up in the north bay. 98 will be the high at santa rosa, san francisco will have a high of 82. today. we'll see some 90s down in the south bay as well. so a heat advisory will be in effect for all locations away from the coast and the bay shoreline from 11:00 tomorrow morning to 11 p.m. on thursday. high temperatures will range from 90 to 100 degrees plus. and of course, that excessive heat brings with it the risk of heat related illness. and today and tomorrow will be spare. the air days with air quality in decline, poor air quality expected in the inland east bay and the santa clara valley. but as we look ahead here on the accuweather seven day forecast, you see after this heat, this period of excessive heat begins to subside. on friday, we can expect cooling going into the weekend and into early next week. >> kumasi thank you. coming up, the seven things to know this morning and this will wake you

the inland east bay, we've got some upper 50s to about 60 degrees right now, just sort of a hint of what's to come. this afternoon. high temperatures will be around 100 degrees this afternoon in concord, livermore, fairfield, 99 at antioch down in the south bay. look for a high of 93 at san jose around the bay shoreline, upper seconds to around 90 degrees 82 will be the high here in san francisco, which is pretty unusual up in the north bay, 94 napa 98 at santa rosa and over the next couple of days, the heat continues. a heat advisory will be in effect for all locations away from the coast line and the bay shore high. this advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. tomorrow to 11 p.m. thursday. high temperatures will range from about 90 around the bay shoreline to above 100 degrees in the hottest inland areas and of course, this kind of excessive heat brings with it the risk of heat related illnesses. so as we move along, bear in mind also with the increase in heat, we have a decrease or decline in air quality. the next two days we have an air quality and a spare. the air alert, in effect, is what i'm trying to say. the

news reporter gloria rodriguez joining us live at levi's stadium, where the 40 niners are set to meet for practice today for the first time since pearsall was shot. gloria. >> that's right. kumasi and pearsall is set to miss the first four games of the season as he recovers from the shooting. meanwhile, the first officer who responded to the incident is being hailed a hero who may have saved his life. now, as we know, pearsall was shot through the chest on saturday after a 17 year old reportedly attempted to rob him while he was walking down the street near union square. the incident, happening just hours after pearsall appeared at an autograph signing event just miles away. the first officer to arrive was sergeant joel harrell, and our colleagues at abc news spoke with her on monday. sergeant harrell, describing hearing the gunshots and then running to find pearsall on the ground in a pool of blood. to abc news reporter melissa don, the sergeant says while they waited for paramedics to arrive, she knew that keeping him conscious and calm was key.

the monday night football. the 40 niners kicking off the season on monday at levi's stadium against the jets. of course, you can watch that game right here on abc seven. but some longtime ticket holders season ticket holders, are debating how long they're going to keep the tickets. nearly a thousand fans have signed a petition over the tough tailgating rules. abc seven news reporter j.r stone has the details. >> 1233 there's nothing like a traditional nfl tailgate 40 niners style, but some of the niners most diehard season ticket holders are frustrated as we are now less than a week away from opening night kickoff and this that. >> they're splitting up. the tailgates are split. it's like you're splitting up a family. >> joe leonora of the niner empire group says that he and others who are involved in the big tailgates have received emails from the 40 niners that certain rules will be enforced at levi's stadium parking lots. that includes no loud music and enforcing what is called

well, not yet, but it will this afternoon. here's what's going on up. looking at the satellite radar composite image. that little low pressure system that cooled us down the last couple of days is moving on out of here. high pressure is building in to bring us a little bit of a mini heat wave. the wind is calm, and that's never a good sign when you're wondering how high the temperatures are going to soar. so for today through thursday, look for sizzling summer heat. triple digit temperatures in our inland areas with the risk, of course, of heat related illness. and then friday through sunday we get some relief with a gradual cooling trend. right now, we're looking at temperatures of 58 degrees in san francisco and oakland. 59 hayward, san jose, 6153. redwood city 48 at half moon bay, looking out over the bay from mount tam. clear skies right now. no. almost no hint of a marine layer. we've got 51 degrees right now at santa rosa and napa, petaluma 46. one of our coolest locations 52 in napa, mid to upper 50s at livermore and concord this afternoon. look for highs along the coastline in the low to mid 70s. 82 will be the high here in san francisco 88, oakland 90. in
