couple of more days. so right now we're looking at temperature readings of 57 in oakland, 58 san francisco and lots of mid to upper 50s generally across the region, which is pretty comfortable. but later in the day we'll start to sizzle today through thursday. in fact, we have this uh- increase in summer heat coming our way. triple digit temperatures will prevail in our inland areas, bringing with that heat the risk of heat related illnesses. then on friday through sunday, we can expect a gradual cooling trend. so we have something to look forward to. but this afternoon, look for highs of 100 at fairfield, concord and livermore, almost 100 in antioch, upper 80s to about 90 around the bay shoreline. san francisco will top out at 82 degrees, and we'll see mid to upper 90s up in the north bay. so heat advisory will be in effect for all locations away from the coast and the bay shoreline. tomorrow from 11 a.m. to thursday, 11 p.m. high temperatures will range from about 90 around the bay shoreline to over 100 in the hottest inland areas. and once again, that kind of heat brings with it the risk of heat related illness. amanda >> hi, spencer. yeah, our overall map showing you a few slowdowns across the bay area.

most notably that typical slowdown that we expect along the altamont pass. and then i'll take you live to the bay bridge toll plaza. you can see it is crowded there. metering lights did turn on at around 530 this morning. the backup is to west grand avenue and traffic remains sluggish from treasure island into the city, with a drive time of 50 minutes from highway four into the city of san francisco. our san jose 280 camera. not too bad. in the south bay of course. more headlights headed toward the city and then our drive times is what i'll leave you with. 55 minutes from tracy to dublin, 16 minutes from dublin to mission boulevard south, and then 101 to cupertino. that drive will take you about 15 minutes. stephanie. >> thanks, amanda. happening today. the 40 niners are back on the practice field just days after their rookie receiver was shot during a robbery attempt. ricky pearsall is now recovering at home, and he won't be back on the field playing for several weeks. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez joins us live now from levi's stadium. and gloria, we spoke to the sergeant

on scene that day. how is she describing what happened? reporter well, stephanie, the sergeant says that while they were waiting for the paramedics to arrive, she knew that keeping pearsall calm and conscious was key. >> we have some footage of that, sergeant. this is sergeant joel herl, the first officer to arrive after 40 niners. rookie ricky pearsall was shot through the chest on saturday. this after a 17 year old reportedly attempted to rob him while he was walking down the street near union square. the incident, happening just hours after pearsall appeared at an autograph signing event just miles away. our colleagues at abc news spoke with sergeant harrell on monday. harrell describing hearing the gunshots and then running to find pearsall on the ground in a pool of blood. to abc news reporter melissa don, she explained what happened next. >> i used my right hand because this is my strong hand to seal the wound. sorry. and then i put it up here to hold that.

facing mounting pressure, as we know, within his own country. >> yes, tensions over the war have certainly been rising in israel. yesterday, tens of thousands of people took to the streets. much of the country was shut down after a nationwide labor strike was called. protesters are demanding netanyahu reach a deal to save the remaining hostages held by hamas. he says his government was close to bringing home six hostages, whose deaths were revealed over the weekend. that includes berkeley native hirsch goldberg, poland. but in a new statement, hamas is suggesting it has a new policy of killing hostages that israel tries to rescue through force. netanyahu claims hamas has refused to hold genuine negotiations, and he hit back at president biden, saying no one will preach to him on this issue. back to you at the desk, kumasi. >> thank you. amanda. in san francisco. the jewish community held a vigil for the six hostages killed, including hersh goldberg-polin. the israeli military recovered his body saturday. the 23 year old, who

spent some of his young childhood in berkeley, was laid to rest yesterday. his parents spoke before the crowd of thousands in jerusalem. >> i'm sorry, hersh, we you. we all failed you. >> finally, my sweet boy. finally, finally, finally, finally. he is free. >> abc news reports. goldberg-polin was among the hostages who would have been released under a proposed ceasefire deal. there's still 101 hostages in gaza, including several americans. >> happening today, the sale of the oakland coliseum takes a step forward in the east bay. oakland mayor shengtao and the african american sports and entertainment group will sign the purchase agreement for the city's half of the coliseum property. the group will now own the entire coliseum complex with the sale. the city says it will not have to use its contingency budget and cuts to the public safety will not be actually

you can't continue to do this. deep breath. i'd want to ask them “why?” (♪) who drives in san francisco, heads back before city transit leaders today. amanda. advocates are putting the pressure on to approve an expansion on banning right turns at red lights. yeah. >> kumasi. according to city documents, transit leaders will not vote on the expansion of no turn on red today, but advocates say they will be attending today's sfmta board of directors meeting to really push for decision makers to approve the

policy. the vote on this no turn on red expansion to cover the entire city was delayed last month, back in august. the board discussed whether a citywide ban was needed or if the rule should be expanded to areas where there are a lot of crashes. there was also a desire for more feedback from the community. according to sustainable transportation advocate luke bornheimer, more than 1100 people have signed a petition for a citywide ban. he says san francisco would be the second largest city in the u.s. to have a citywide, no turn on red policy in place. as of right now, the city has already banned right turns on red lights at around 200 intersections in downtown, and the tenderloin. sfmta says priority areas for the expansion could be parts of the mission and nob hill. back to you at the desk. >> thanks, amanda. a bill that would require speed warning technology be added to cars in california now sitting on governor newsom's desk. senate bill 961 was authored by state senator scott wiener from san francisco in response to an

increase in traffic deaths over the past five years. if signed by the governor, it would mandate an alarm be installed in all cars starting in 2030 to let you know if you're driving more than ten miles an hour over the speed limit. >> we're not physically stopping them. if people choose to speed, that's their choice and it creates risk and they might get a ticket for it. but the least we can do is make sure that people are aware immediately if they are driving more than ten miles an hour over the speed limit. >> opponents of the law say it would be annoying and argue safety requirements should be left to the federal government. the ntsb and triple a support the bill. governor newsom has until the end of the month to either sign or veto it. >> covid has had a busy summer, spreading far and wide, but it's finally starting to calm down. wastewater data in santa clara county shows this season was one of the periods with the highest transmission rates, and those rates are drastically higher compared to last summer. now

we're seeing steep declines in wastewater numbers. the cdc predicts a better covid outlook this winter compared to last. >> all that immunity hopefully means that we'll have a better winter than we did last summer, with lower rates of cases. we're going to have the other viruses flu and rsv, but hopefully covid will have done its work. unfortunately, during the summer, even so, experts say covid is still unpredictable and immunity makes for the best defense. >> the new vaccine came out last week and anyone can get it. it's most recommended for the elderly and people who are immunocompromised. and a reminder at the end of this month, you'll be able to get covid tests for free from the government. you can get four per household from covidtests.gov. >> new at six? do it yourself. braces are apparently a thing, but now it's coming with a warning from doctors. dental experts are warning against the

really going to warm up. we can expect high temperatures of 100 degrees at fairfield, concord and livermore. just 1 degrees under 100 at antioch down to the south. bay 93, san jose 98 at morgan hill, upper seconds to 90 or 91 degrees around the bay shoreline. san francisco. it's going to top out at 82 degrees today, and up in the north bay we'll see highs ranging from mid to upper seconds. now the heat advisory will be in effect from 11 a.m. tomorrow to 11 p.m. thursday for all locations in the bay area away from the coastline and the shore. the bay shoreline. i should say high temperatures will range from 90 to above 100 degrees. heat related illnesses are possible under these conditions, and a spare the air day today and tomorrow. in fact, a moderate air quality at best will see poor air quality in the inland east bay and the santa clara valley both of those days. and here's the accuweather seven day forecast. so this triple digit mini midweek heat wave will last through thursday, even on friday, as it starts to cool a little bit, we'll still see upper 90s in our inland areas,

containment. that part of northern california was under a red flag warning for strong winds and dry conditions. two u.s. marines were attacked during a port visit in turkey. the marines were on shore leave from the uss wasp when a group of 15 people attacked them yesterday. you see here. the group chanted yankee go home during that attack. both marines were taken to the hospital but were not injured. local police say the incident is under investigation. pope francis has embarked on his longest and farthest trip going to asia for 12 days. he has landed in jakarta, the capital of indonesia. he will also travel to papua new guinea, singapore and east timor. he's expected to highlight environmental concerns and interfaith dialog. pope francis is turning 88 years old in december and has been battling some health issues. the pope is expected to travel roughly 20,000 miles, the longest of his travels since his

died was a long standing kidney doctor there named jeffrey krahling. a local pilot confirmed his death, and officials say the plane was registered to him as well. crawling was the only one on board when that plane went down at gnoss field in novato. the ntsb is investigating the cause, and a report is expected within 30 days. today, we show the bosses how we celebrate labor day in this city. thousands of hotel workers will continue their walkout today. it's the last day of a massive strike around the country. yesterday, workers rallied around union square here in san francisco. contract talks between the union and top hotel chains including hyatt, hilton and the marriott, have stalled. the union wants better wages and health care, plus a more manageable workload. >> this is an industry that has been that has been coming back from the pandemic. they've been making their profits fine, but

they haven't shared any of that with us. >> hilton hotels said in a statement they are committed to negotiating in good faith. hyatt called the strike disappointing and said they remain willing to negotiate. inside san francisco's grand hyatt, it appeared to be business as usual, though some food amenities were not available. >> the strike extended into the south bay. workers in downtown san jose rallied at the signia by hilton. it used to be a fairmont hotel. employees at the doubletree also went on strike. >> california lawmakers seem to be cooling on the influence of labor unions after last year's hot labor summer. as we saw strikes from hollywood to fast food to health care last summer, lawmakers backed several major policy wins for unions. no such success, though, this year. the legislative session came to an end saturday with the failure of multiple labor backed bills. a plan to give unemployment benefits to striking workers did not pass. neither did labor

hot weather coming. our way this afternoon, but right now things are relatively cool and comfortable with temperatures 56 degrees at concord, 51 at danville. around the bay shoreline we have some mid to upper 50s at 57. in oakland, san francisco 58 degrees up in the north bay is only 48 at sonoma and 50 at santa rosa. but as i mentioned, temperatures are going to rise sharply this afternoon with highs at 100 degrees in fairfield, concord and livermore. we'll see 88 at oakland, 90 at san mateo, 82 will be the high here in san francisco. mid to upper 90s in the north bay. and mid 90s down in the south bay. now a heat advisory will be in effect from 11 a.m. tomorrow to 11 p.m. thursday for all locations away from the coast and the bay shoreline. highs during that period of time will range from 90 near the bay to 100 degrees, plus in the warmest inland areas and of course, this kind of excessive heat brings with it the risk of heat related illnesses. also, air quality is declining. spare the air today and tomorrow. moderate air quality will prevail at the best. the poorest air quality will be in the inland east bay

at levi stadium against the jets, and it's right here on abc seven this morning. one of their best offensive linemen could be close to returning. the 11 time pro bowler trent williams back in the bay area and espn reportedly saying the niners are finalizing a deal with him to end his holdout. but before the season starts, some longtime ticket holders are debating how long they're going to keep the tickets. nearly a thousand fans have signed a petition over the tough tailgating rules going into effect at levi's. abc seven news reporter j.r stone has the details on that. >> 1233 there's nothing like a traditional nfl tailgate 40 niners style, but some of the niners most diehard season ticket holders are frustrated as we are now less than a week away from opening night kickoff and this that. >> they're splitting up. the tailgates are split. it's like you're splitting up a family. >> joe leonora of the niner empire group says that he and others who are involved in the big tailgates have received

emails from the 40 niners that certain rules will be enforced at levi's stadium parking lots. that includes no loud music and enforcing what is called directed parking, a parking process that is similar to what you'd see at a theme park with vehicles being waved in levi's stadium website says that directed parking maximizes the use of available spaces. leonor says he was told by those with the niners that it helps those arriving later closer to kickoff, we pay $3,000 per seat. >> we have three. it's it's like. and now now i can't park next to my friend. and that's why we have the early tailgate. >> some season ticket holders are often given early tailgate parking privileges, but that appears to be changing. >> and they've cut back on the early tailgate placards. also, i know half of the people in joe's group who got the early tailgate did not receive it this year.

today. although it feels pretty comfortable right now. let's take a look at what's going on. you can see the wind is really calm, which is often an indicator this time of the year that we're going to have a warm up, but at the moment things are pretty comfortable. we've got temperatures in the upper 50s at san jose, hayward, oakland and san francisco, 53 at redwood city right now 48 and half moon bay. excuse me. looking down onto the bay from mount tam with no fog in sight, 50 degrees at santa rosa, a cool 46 at petaluma. right now we have low 50s at fairfield, concord and mid 50s at livermore and fairfield and napa, rather, and mid 50s at concord and livermore. these are the forecast headlines today through thursday. sizzling summer heat will be with us in our inland areas. triple digit high temperatures will prevail with the risk, of course, of heat related illnesses. but friday through sunday we have something to look forward to. first of all, the clearing of my throat and then gradual cooling trend over the weekend. so for today, look for high temperatures up to 100 degrees at fairfield, concord and livermore. 99 at antioch, mid to upper 90s in many other inland locations, north bay and south bay up to
