like this, it is something that i see as very, very serious. >> the top prosecutor in san francisco, sitting down with abc7 news one on one. the shooting of 40 niners rookie wide receiver ricky pearsall is now in the hands of the court. good evening. i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us. attempted murder charges have been filed against the teenage suspect in the attempted robbery case of pearsall. the shooting happened saturday in san francisco's union square.

>> abc7 news reporter j.r. stone sat down with d.a. brooke jenkins in an interview. you'll see only on seven. >> those charges now are attempted murder with additional gun enhancements. >> san francisco district attorney brooke jenkins laying out the charges against the 17 year old suspect in the ricky pearsall case. the 49 ers wide receiver shot in the chest saturday in san francisco's union square. i sat down with jenkins in a one on one interview tuesday night. she says in addition to the attempted murder charge, the suspect also faces assault with a semiautomatic weapon and second degree attempted robbery charges is attempted murder the strongest charge that you could have filed in this case? yes. >> it does appear to have been the most serious charge that was eligible based on these facts. >> monday, bullet holes could still be seen here, here and here on the side of a building and in the area where pearsall was shot in a scuffle during the attempted robbery tuesday. jenkins was bold about holding the suspect and others in

similar cases, accountable. >> i want it to be clear that san francisco is not a safe haven for criminal behavior. i know that there was a time period where people thought that lawlessness was something that we were going to tolerate. those days are over, but it is still unclear if jenkins will try to prosecute the minor as an adult. >> in california, a da wanting to do that must request a transfer hearing to an adult court, which requires a juvenile court judge's ruling. in 2022, jenkins announced a new policy for 16 and 17 year olds to be charged as adults in heinous crimes. do you look at this case as a heinous case? >> the prior district attorney had a policy that he would never seek to try a juvenile as an adult. i came in saying, look, we have to put options on the table for certain types of crime. and so attempted murder is included in the type of crime that i have said. this office will potentially consider for whether or not we think it's appropriate to seek to transfer

a juvenile to adult court. >> the suspect's first court appearance will happen wednesday afternoon. j.r stone, abc seven news. >> and the 49 ers returned to practice today. and they have a game in six days. however clearly that was not the focus as we got to hear from the team about what happened to ricky pearsall. it started with general manager john lynch addressing the media along with stars brandon aiyuk and trent williams, who just ended holdouts. >> other players shared their reaction about how jarring this is to have a teammate shot like this. obviously it's stunning. sports director larry beil is here to talk more about this, and obviously we're hearing the stories. larry. it's clearly something reverberating from the playing field all the way to upper management. >> well, you can call it a wake up call if you want, but at the very least it's a reminder about the value of human life. we take it for granted that we're going to be here tomorrow. that may not be the case for everybody. 40 niners gm john lynch, he probably put it best. he said. the call on saturday was one that you never, ever want to get after spending just one night in

the hospital, though, pearsall felt good enough to visit the 40 niners team facilities yesterday and talked with his teammates. today was the first day we got to hear from the 40 niners about exactly what happened to ricky pearsall, and there was an overwhelming sense of relief that he is going to be okay and will be able to play at some point this season. >> by the grace of god, ricky pearsall is here with the team and doing really well. >> we've learned a little more about what was going on. on saturday, pearsall did an autograph session and general manager john lynch says the rookie wideout then went shopping for luggage for upcoming road trips. the niners also held a party that night for the team, which pearsall would have attended. lynch says he ended up making an appearance virtually from the hospital. >> kind of a cool moment. we were able to pipe ricky into the party and he facetimed the entire group and man, that show of love and respect was was a real special moment for our team. >> the overall experience proved to be really sobering for the entire franchise, starting with the front office.

>> you never loved to get any call with regards to your players where they're in danger or peril. and their earliest calls that i received were were extremely scary. >> wide receiver brandon aiyuk just rejoined the team after a lengthy holdout. he played with pearsall briefly in college at arizona state, a very traumatic experience for all involved. >> just super happy that he's alive. we're able to see him and talk to him. >> this may sound a bit miraculous, but pearsall was at the 40 niners facility on monday, working out in the gym, and some of the players got to see him and talk with him and just hugged him and just hugged him and, just just let him know, man. >> just take it at his own pace. >> as soon as i saw him, i smiled, man, like, i just, i smiled, went and wrapped him up, hugged him. >> offensive lineman trent williams, who just ended his holdout, says what happened to his teammate was one of the motivating factors for him returning to the niners. williams had this message just staying in the moment and realizing that, you know, your

temperatures soaring up into the triple digits, just like today. so be prepared. it was 104 in san rafael, tying a record set back in 1950. triple digits from concord to fairfield, 95, in san jose. mid to upper seconds from san francisco to oakland. 100 degrees in santa rosa. heat advisory for san francisco until tomorrow night. as the risk of heat related illnesses will be elevated, you're running about 15 degrees above average for your high. again and you will notice most of the bay area will be going under that heat advisory tomorrow morning until thursday night, as we are facing moderate to major heat risk away from the coastline. taking a look at those temperatures, that scorcher will bring temperatures up into the mid one hundreds in places like fairfield, livermore, 103 100. in santa rosa, 97, in san jose. spare the air alert in effect through tomorrow. we're going to see some poor air quality for parts of the bay area. thursday we go to moderate. i'll be back to let you know how long this triple digit sizzle will last. coming

right up, dan. all right. >> sandra. thank you. a bad crash ended with one driver dead, another hurt and two cars going off a cliff. firefighters say the car smashed through a wall of the cliff house on point lobos avenue. this was about 440 today. you can see those two cars on the cliff side, one right by the wall and the other that rolled down to the edge of the cliff house. the wall has dark marks that look like the car's tires. firefighters tell us the driver who survived has minor injuries. it is not clear how this happened and what led up to the crash. >> we are seeing the latest step in a long saga. we know all too well when it comes to building a better bay area. today, new sweeps of homeless encampments is pushing one side of this struggle. abc seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez takes a closer look at what's at play. >> city work crews started clearing a homeless encampment in san jose tuesday morning. people living in tents or rvs around columbus park were given two weeks to move. homeless advocate sean cartwright handed out water, fruit and hygiene

kits throughout the day. >> this is what happens is you have a guy who is mentally ill, deeply, and he's sitting here trying to push his own van by himself. when it's 95 degrees. >> the city says because the encampment lies under the san jose airport's flight path, they are required to keep the area clear of birds, trash or campfire smoke. >> this does nothing to help any of those people get housed, and it's not for any reason other than to make it look like you're doing something. >> some people just moved their things across to the city owned area. sandra ocasio lives in that encampment with her children and three grandchildren, including seven year old mila and one month old leah. >> estamos muy estados, otro explained. >> they're scared. they moved from colombia five months ago. it's difficult to find a job without a proper work permit. having an option where the entire family can be temporarily housed is what she's hoping for. similar efforts are underway in the east bay. the mayor of

antioch had words for surrounding cities today. >> i want to be very, very clear that antioch is not going to be a dump site for the bay area's problems. >> mayor lamar hernandez thorpe is proposing to change the city's no camping ordinance to specifically include trails, waterways and city plazas, not just city parks, he said. the city applied for nearly $6 million from the state for encampment resolution funding, and he does not want that funding compromised. >> all you got to do is drive around to see the new rvs that are coming to antioch. we all know where they're coming from. they're coming from other cities that are deliberately pushing people out. that's not fair for the guy who graduated from our local high school who's been waiting for services in the south bay. >> lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> san francisco's newest fire chief is officially ready to step into the job. >> today, i am very proud to announce that the interim chief of the san francisco fire department will be no other than

after learning about the deaths. people also prayed for the safe return of the remaining hostages. >> now to your voice and your vote. one week out to the presidential debate. a source tells abc news vice president kamala harris will be focused on how to get under former president trump's skin. harris's surrogates kicked off a reproductive rights bus tour through florida today. tomorrow, the vice president is in new hampshire, where she is set to unveil a plan to boost small businesses through increased federal tax incentives. transportation secretary pete buttigieg is fundraising for harris in the bay area tomorrow, with five separate events, according to the new york times. former president trump will hold a televised town hall in pennsylvania tomorrow. trump has been reviewing policy with advisers ahead of next week's debate. in a new podcast interview, he said he's confident about the debate and also gave a rare acknowledgment that he lost the last election. the next presidential debate, just a week away, is scheduled for tuesday, september 10th, right here on abc seven. our coverage begins at 5:00. >> health officials are tracking

a growing number of cases of a potentially deadly infection, all tied to a music festival. the state health department says 19 people are sick with valley fever after attending the lightning in a bottle outdoor festival in kern county in may. that's up from five cases at the end of july. valley fever is caused by a fungus that grows in the dirt in some parts of the state. eight people from the music festival have been hospitalized. >> we now know why elton john pulled out of the salesforce dream fest concert in san francisco. the rock n roll legend says he's healing from a severe eye infection. he posted on his instagram today saying he has limited vision in one eye. he says he's healing, but it will be a while before his sight returns. salesforce replaced elton john with pink and imagine dragons dream fest concert is september 18th at oracle park. leaders in the south bay today unveiled this mural that commemorates the newly named east village san jose. it's the latest effort to revitalize the city's downtown. east village is a business district stretching along east santa clara street

high pressure in control of weather. and as a result, we've had some offshore flow today. downsloping wind, which drove the marine layer away. but it is back and you'll see what i'm talking about in just a moment. temperatures are running higher than where they were just 24 hours ago by 14 degrees in livermore, up 11 in novato, eight in san jose. temperatures ranging from the 50s in san francisco to the 80s well inland, so still pretty mild to warm outside. and look at our hilltops. i mean, it's 82 degrees on hood mountain right now. 75. mount eminem, 76. diablo. you combine that with the humidity that has been pretty low, and that's why the fire danger will be elevated. now the humidity values have come up a little bit. 26% in brentwood, but you'll notice san francisco 82%, as we do have some fog back on live doppler seven. it's a shallow layer about 1000ft. that's why visibility is down to less than a quarter of a mile in half moon
