up about seeing him for the first time since the shooting, how they are feeling with just a few days before the season opener and campaign crunch time. >> what vice president kamala harris is expected to announce today as she prepares to debate former president donald trump and $10 million hit this cocktail, exploding in popularity. >> nearly 20 years after it first debuted at the u.s. open. >> good morning everybody. it's wednesday, september 4th. yes. >> start the check of our forecast with spencer. >> oh, well, you know, it's going to be hot today. i can start with that. and it was hot yesterday. it's going to be hot the next couple of days already. we're looking at on the 24 hour temperature change. the fact that it's about 3 to 7 degrees warmer now than at this time yesterday across the region. so let's take a look at current temperature readings. only 58 here in san francisco. but look at all the low to mid 60s building around the bay shoreline into the inland east

bay 65 down in san jose already and 72 at brentwood. so when we have temperature readings that high at this hour of the morning, you know it's going to get much, much warmer in the midday, midday hours. so these are the forecast headlines. next three days triple digit heat will remain with us in our inland areas. coastal areas warmer than average. and fire danger of course will be elevated with this kind of excessive heat. and speaking of excessive heat, we're looking for high temperatures well above 100 degrees in most of our inland areas today, especially in the inland east bay 106 at concord, 105 at livermore, 104 at fairfield. upper 80s to low 90s near the bay shoreline, and a reminder that we have a heat advisory in effect from 11 a.m. today to 11 p.m. tomorrow for virtually all of the bay area. heat related illnesses are a possibility under these conditions. let's take a look at the at the weather, the traffic with amanda. yeah. >> good morning spencer. from that advisory to this one going on right now, it's a dense fog advisory for the golden gate bridge. but as you see, it isn't impacting the drive at all for people heading in or out of the city. then i'll take you down to

charges. the 49 ers wide receiver was shot in the chest on saturday in san francisco's union square. abc seven news reporter j.r. stone sat down with jenkins in a one on one interview. you'll only see on seven tuesday night. jenkins was bold about holding the suspect and others in similar cases, accountable. >> i want it to be clear that san francisco is not a safe haven for criminal behavior. i know that there was a time period where people thought that lawlessness was something that we were going to tolerate, those days are over. >> it is still unclear if jenkins will try to prosecute the minor as an adult. in california, a da wanting to do that must request a transfer hearing to an adult court that requires a juvenile court judge's ruling. in 2022, jenkins announced a new policy for 16 and 17 year olds to be charged as adults in heinous crimes. the teen suspect is from tracy, and her first court appearance is scheduled for this afternoon. live in the studio gloria rodriguez, abc seven news.

gloria. >> thank you. the forty-niners returned to practice, and their first game of the season is just five days away. but that was not the focal point as we got to hear from the team about what happened to ricky pearsall. it started with general manager john lynch addressing the media, along with stars brandon aiyuk and trent williams, who just ended their holdouts. other players shared their reaction about how jarring it is to have a teammate shot. abc seven sports director larry beil has the story. >> we got to hear from the forty-niners about exactly what happened to ricky pearsall, and there was an overwhelming sense of relief that he is going to be okay and will be able to play at some point this season. >> by the grace of god, ricky pearsall is here with the team and doing really well. >> we've learned a little more about what was going on on saturday. pearsall did an autograph session and general manager john lynch says the rookie wideout then went shopping for luggage for upcoming road trips. the niners also held a party that night for the team, which pearsall would

have attended. lynch says he ended up making an appearance virtually from the hospital. >> kind of a cool moment. we were able to pipe ricky into the party and he facetimed the entire group and man, that show of love and respect was was a real special moment for our team. the overall experience proved to be really sobering for the entire franchise, starting with the front office. you never love to get any call with regards to your players where they're in danger or peril and man their earliest calls that i received were were extremely scary. >> wide receiver brandon aiyuk just rejoined the team after a lengthy holdout. he played with pearsall briefly in college at arizona state, a very traumatic experience for all involved. >> just super happy that he's alive. we're able to see him and talk to him. >> this may sound a bit miraculous, but pearsall was at the 40 niners facility on monday, working out in the gym,

and some of the players got to see him and talk with him and just hugged him and just hugged him and just just let him know, man. >> just take it at his own pace. >> as soon as i saw him, i smiled, man, like i just, i smiled, went and wrapped him up, hugged him. >> offensive lineman trent williams, who just ended his holdout, says what happened to his teammate was one of the motivating factors for him returning to the niners. williams had this message just staying in the moment and realizing that, you know, your life is more important than anything, that you can wake up and put on. >> that was larry beil reporting. pearsall is going to miss at least the first month of the season. lynch said pearsall is dealing with other minor injuries, and it just didn't seem possible that he would be ready to go. and again, a reminder the niners kick off their new season against the new york jets on monday at levi's stadium. you can watch it right here on abc seven. our coverage begins at 5:00. >> a bad crash in san francisco ended with one driver dead. another hurt and two cars going off of a cliff. firefighters say

the cars smashed through a wall at the cliff house on point lobos avenue, just after 430 yesterday afternoon, and you can see those two cars on the cliff side, one right by the wall, another that rolled down to the edge of the cliff house. the wall had those dark marks appearing to be from the car's tires. firefighters tell us the driver who survived has minor injuries. and at this point, it's not clear what led up to the crash. san francisco's newest fire chief is officially ready to step into the job. >> today, i am very proud to announce that the interim chief of the san francisco fire department will be no other than sandy tung. >> sandy tong, sworn in as the department's interim chief at this ceremony yesterday. tong has served on the department's command staff for the last five years, and has 35 years of public service experience. she's the first ever chinese american chief of the san francisco fire

rental cars faster. san francisco leaders say this would also prevent the cars from being used for theft and trafficking. abc seven news reporter lena howland explains when a rental car isn't returned on time as california state law stands today, companies are required to wait 72 hours to use gps to find it. >> it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. >> that's state assemblymember matt haney of san francisco. he authored a bill that would shorten the window down to 24 hours instead. and now he's urging governor newsom to sign the bill. >> many of these rental cars, when they're stolen, are actually used in other crimes. someone doesn't want to use their own car in in a crime because it can be traced. so they take a rental car, they steal it, and they go commit other crimes. >> he claims over the past three years, rental car companies have

reported a 266% increase in rental car thefts. san francisco district attorney brooke jenkins says those stolen rental cars are frequently used to commit other crimes, like organized retail theft. >> oftentimes, when they are driving vehicles through the front doors of our business stores, they're not driving their own vehicles through those doors. they're driving stolen rental cars because they don't mind damaging those cars. >> she claims cutting the time down will make it easier for police to do their jobs. once that car is entered into the system as stolen, we will have another technological way to make sure that sfpd can do what it needs to pull over that car and make an arrest in that situation if necessary. >> this information officers will be used to immediately apprehend suspects. >> san francisco deputy police chief derrick jackson says if the change is made, it would also make the city's 400 newly installed license plate readers more effective, with the ability to better track stolen rental vehicles, we can be more

effective in identifying criminal suspects and to continue to keep driving down crime. governor newsom has until the end of september to sign or veto the bill in san francisco. lena howland, abc seven news the mayor of antioch has proposed a new idea as the city looks to tackle the homelessness crisis. >> mayor lamar hernandez thorpe wants to update antioch's no camping ordinance that was passed back in 1996. it mandates that no one can camp in a tent or car, but currently applies only to city parks and recreational facilities. the mayor wants to expand that to include public waterways, trails, and plazas that would give city service providers a greater ability to offer help to people living in dangerous encampments. >> antioch is not going to be a dump site for the bay area's problems, so i would encourage other cities to do take the same actions that we have taken with the hotel and other services that we have. >> antioch has requested more funding from the state to

increase motel capacity for its transitional housing programs. >> san francisco mayor london breed is gaining some extra cash for her reelection bid. billionaire michael bloomberg donated $1 million to a committee supporting breed. the donation is one of the largest in this election season. breed's major challengers are former supervisor and interim mayor mark farrell, nonprofit founder daniel lurie, supervisors aaron peskin and asha safai. >> the u.s. open is making headlines for more than just tennis. the tournament's signature drink is expected to top $10 million in sales since its creation by the end of the week. the honey deuce is a mix of vodka, lemonade and raspberry liqueur with melon balls on top. the drink came out in 2007, and it now costs $23, a $1 increase from last year. it's so popular. the u.s. open has multiple stands exclusively serving the honey deuce with the cocktail mix on tap. it looks pretty

building. >> it all comes after they got to see their teammate ricky pearsall, for the first time since he was shot, and just hugged him. >> just hugged him and just just let him know. man just take it at his own pace. >> and right now that's what 40 niners general manager john lynch said they're allowing him to do for now, putting pearsall on the non-football injury list. >> we had to we had to act quickly with that decision. i wish, i wish we had some more time to make it, but ultimately we felt the number one thing we had to be concerned with was ricky's well-being. >> but according to lynch's update, pearsall may not be on that list for too long. >> it's nothing short of miraculous that he came out of this as good as he did. >> lynch, who visited pearsall at the hospital, confirmed that pearsall did not suffer any nerve or organ damage during tuesday's press conference, lynch also sent a big shout out to the sfpd sergeant, joel harrell, who was on hand to help pearsall until paramedics arrived. >> she was there for him in a real rough time, and i know how appreciative ricky is of that.

of those people get housed, and it's not for any reason other than to make it look like you're doing something. >> similar efforts are underway in the east bay. antioch mayor lamar hernandez thorpe is proposing to change the city's no camping ordinance to mean no encampments on trails, waterways or in plazas. the current ordinance only includes city parks. >> new details this morning, the eight year old girl, who was shot in san francisco last week was not struck by a stray bullet. that's according to san francisco supervisor asha safai. safai told the chronicle. all signs point to an accidental firing of a gun inside the girl's home.er siblings and their teenage friends were home at the time. supervisor safai says the girl was struck in the back of her head near one of her ears. she is expected to recover. >> health officials are tracking a growing number of cases of a potentially deadly infection involving attendees of a music festival, the state health department now says 19 people

are sick with valley fever after attending the lightning in a bottle festival in kern county back in may. that is up from five cases at the end of july. valley fever is caused by a fungus that grows in the dirt in some parts of the state. eight people from the music festival have been hospitalized. >> we now know why elton john pulled out of the salesforce dream fest concert here in san francisco. the rock n roll legend says he's healing from a severe eye infection. elton john posted on his instagram today saying he has limited vision in one eye. he says he's healing, but it will be a while before his sight fully returns. salesforce replaced elton john with pink and imagine dragons. the dream fest concert is september 18th at oracle park, oakland city leaders celebrating the new deal to sell the oakland coliseum. >> the city finalized the agreement saturday, weeks after the a's finished their deal. the ballpark will now be owned by the african american sports and entertainment group, which is an

landslide in the city's sea view neighborhood is threatening homes and buckling roads. now, severe storms and rain over the past two years is said to be the cause of the accelerated land movement. the land beneath some of these homes is sliding at least 9 to 12in per week. power has been shut off to more than 200 homes, and residents say they've lost the ability to live normal lives. >> unbelievable. in the last four months, it's constant. i mean, it's just what do you do? we sitting here on a keg of dynamite and we can't go repair anything because the ground continues to move. >> now that homeowner says he was told he could have sold his home for about $2.5 million before this. all happened. he's unsure anyone would want to buy his property now, after all the new cracks that have shown up. now we know the governor's state of emergency declaration elevates the issue. the city's mayor says it opens up state and federal resources and residents

could see some financial relief. back to you at the desk. >> thanks, amanda. hundreds of homes are under evacuation orders north of lake tahoe this morning because of the bear fire. it's threatening the community of sierra brooks in sierra county. this fire scorched hundreds of acres monday, but growth slowed down yesterday. it's burned more than 2000 acres. no containment at this point. firefighters are focusing their efforts on protecting homes. it was quite a night out at oracle park. as a founder of one of the world's most valuable companies, tossed out the first pitch at the giants game. jensen huang is the ceo of nvidia, which is based out of santa clara and is one of the leaders in ai. this was the first time the giants have held a taiwaneseitage night and helps, which helps supply the semiconductors that power silicon valley. huang was born on the island, which is, and he's also extremely passionate about baseball. fans got to

>> september is transit month here in the bay area, and there are events, contests and prizes on different public transit agencies, including a bart paper ticket, fashion show and a car free happy hour. we got a link to the list of what's happening over on our website, abc seven news.com. now this comes as the notorious mess on van ness has come a long way. all the improvements made by san francisco have earned it international recognition. the city overhauled the corridor to make numerous improvements to ease congestion and make it safer. one of the biggest changes was to muni's bus service with the brt, or bus rapid transit system. it's supposed to make service faster and more reliable. construction started in 2016, and the brt lane opened in april of 2022. and since it's been a success, the city says service is 36% faster and that traffic crashes with injuries are down by almost half. the institute for

everything so dry. the highs today 101 at san rafael, 100 at santa rosa. over in the inland east bay, look for well over 100 degrees at locations like antioch and livermore. concord up to 106. down in the south bay. we'll top out at 96 degrees at san jose today, 102 at morgan hill and right around the bay shoreline. we'll see numerous locations in the low 90s. this kind of heat, of course, brings with it the risk of heat related illness. we have a heat advisory in effect from 11:00 this morning to 11:00 tomorrow night, and that covers virtually all of the bay area except the immediate bay shoreline and the immediate coast. so on we go to a look at the accuweather seven day forecast. this heat wave heat wave is going to last through the end of the week. very hot tomorrow again with highs up to about 104 inland. upper 80s around the bay shoreline up to about 100 on friday. a little bit of a tapering in the in the heat but still quite hot and finally temperatures drop sharply over the weekend. some low 90s inland and going into early next week

sonoma county held its annual sea otter awareness day at dawn beach. it was part educational with the public learning about the effort to restore the population, but also part fun. there was sand sculpture contests with all the creations depicting sea otters. as you can see, otters were nearly driven to extinction in the early 1900s. but are gradually recovering. san francisco is continuing to work toward building more affordable housing to help with the city's housing crisis. the mission rock neighborhood is home to the newest development. mayor london breed cut the ribbon at the verde building. it soars 23 stories above the water, just across from oracle park. >> can you imagine living here and being able to come up here and watch a game for free with your binoculars? wait a minute. this is the future and what we want to be able to do in san francisco is create neighborhoods like this all over the city.
