sleep per night. is it possible? >> from abc news. this is america. this morning. >> good thursday morning, everyone. i'm andrew dymburt. and i'm rhiannon ally. >> good morning to all of you. we want to begin with that deadly school shooting in georgia. two students and two teachers were killed. overnight we learned new information about the suspect and his previous interactions with the fbi. >> new details overnight about possible missed red flags concerning the 14 year old accused of killing four people at his high school in georgia. investigators say the teen had been on the fbi's radar for more than a year. >> sadly, this is a pretty common occurrence with mass attackers where they have some sort of previous engagement with law enforcement. >> the fbi says agents received tips in may of last year about threats to commit a school shooting. investigators determined the threats came from then 13 year old colt gray, who denied making threats at the time. the fbi says the teen's father stated he had hunting guns in the house, but his son did not have unsupervised access to them, and there was no

probable cause to take action. and the local sheriff's office determined the threats could not be substantiated. >> typically, in these cases, we see some type of knock and talk. the law enforcement officers go to the house. they talk, in this case to a father. they ask about guns in the house. they ask about this concerning behavior. and then they walk away, often shrugging their shoulders, goin, this isn't good. there's something wrong here. but we don't have the authority to act. >> authorities outside atlanta say the teen used an ar style rifle to open fire inside appalachia high school yesterday. students scrambling for shelter in their classrooms and on the football field. >> it was very quiet. a lot of people were crying. it was like like everybody was scared and people were screaming and calling their moms and everything. >> school officers encountered the shooter within minutes and he was taken into custody, killed in the gunfire. 214 year old students, mason schermerhorn and cristian angulo, along with

teachers richard aspinwall and christina grimmie. nine others were injured, most of them students. the shooting is at least the 45th school shooting in the u.s. this year, and the deadliest. >> just a tragic time for really this whole community. >> last night, hundreds gathered at a vigil nearby. >> i still don't believe this is real. like i knew a girl that got shot in her leg. and it really broke me because she was like a sister to me. >> authorities say gray will be charged with murder and will be tried as an adult, but overnight, there was no word on a motive. >> 14 is really young. we usually see individuals, older and adolescents when this type of thing happens. 1617, 18, 19 their brains aren't fully developed at this point. the victims deserve justice. and at the same time, we need to recognize that this was a very troubled kid that needed help and didn't get the help that he needed. >> those nine people injured are expected to survive. as for how the suspect obtained the gun,

that was used, that remains unclear. >> russia is firing back against allegations that moscow is stepping up its election interference efforts here in the u.s. the justice department has now charged two employees of russian state media in a scheme to hire a tennessee company to produce divisive content online to help sway the presidential election as abc's pierre thomas reports, the u.s. government has already seized 32 bogus website domains purchased by russian security services that looked like legitimate news sites. >> administration officials say russia's efforts were aimed at sowing divisions here at home and influencing ukraine policy and securing russia's preferred outcome. reelecting donald trump. >> our thanks to pierre for that. the kremlin calls the justice department's crackdown a witch hunt. we have new details about next week's presidential debate right here on abc. >> the rules have now been announced, just as vice president harris and former president trump visited two swing states. trump holding a town hall in pennsylvania. abc's em nguyen has the latest from

supermarket chain, he is vowing to lower prices if a controversial merger is approved. this morning, a major player in the supermarket industry is adding insight to soaring food prices. kroger ceo rodney mcmullen took the stand yesterday in a hearing that could determine the fate of a proposed merger with his company's rival, albertsons. the federal trade commission is trying to temporarily block the $24 billion merger, claiming it would eliminate competition and lead to higher food prices. but mcmullen told the court the merger would allow the combined company to lower prices to better compete with walmart and costco. when asked why food prices are up 25% since 2019, mcmullen blamed rising supplier costs, fuel prices and credit card fees. but mcmullen is making a promise he is pledging to cut grocery prices by $1 billion on day one. if the

merger is approved. that court hearing on the proposed merger is expected to last through next week. >> the number of job openings in the u.s. just hit the lowest level since january of 2021. the labor department's number fell below expectations, increasing the likelihood that the federal reserve will cut interest rates this month. and turning now to the weather. evacuations have been ordered near a fast moving wildfire in central oregon. it was sparked by lightning monday and has already burned 96mi■!s. heavy winds and extreme heat are fueling the fire. record high temperatures are also possible from the pacific northwest to phoenix today. >> let's take a closer look now at your thursday forecast. more heavy rain and possible flooding is expected across florida today. a storm that hit the tampa area yesterday left thousands without power. some parts of jacksonville got four inches of rain. meanwhile, parts of the gulf coast could see six inches of rain through tomorrow. flood watches are up from texas to alabama and checking today's

asking a judge to reinstate an involuntary manslaughter charge against alec baldwin for the fatal shooting on the rust movie set. the judge previously dismissed the case, based on, quote, egregious discovery violations. but the prosecutor claims there's insufficient evidence to support that claim of misconduct. baldwin's lawyers say they will respond in court. >> and now to florida. and the case of a man who died after a doctor allegedly removed the wrong organ during surgery. here's abc's andrea fujii. >> this morning an alabama widow is in the process of filing a lawsuit after a doctor allegedly removed her husband's liver instead of his spleen, which she says caused him to die on the operating table. >> i know i'm not the only wife that has lost her husband suddenly, but the loss of my bill was exceptionally unnecessary and brutal. last month, william and beverly bryant were visiting destin, florida, when she says william went to ascension, sacred heart, emerald coast hospital with pain in his shoulder neck and left

side. >> beverly says her husband was told he needed to have his spleen removed immediately. >> bill would bleed to death if he was moved. >> the 70 year old went through with the surgery, but she says he died on the operating table. according to beverly's attorney, the pathologist's report revealed the doctor removed william's liver, which is on the opposite side of the body, from the spleen and an essential organ for the body to survive. the doctor is said to have 14 years of experience, but beverly's attorney claims this is the doctor's second wrong site surgery in two years, with a previous case being settled last year. beverly says she wants civil and criminal proceedings. >> we do not want this to happen to anyone else by this particular individual. >> the hospital says it's investigating, saying our thoughts and prayers are with the family. the walton county sheriff's office also investigating the doctor's name, has been removed from the hospital's website, but the hospital is not elaborating on any potential disciplinary
