>> thanks for joining us tonight. some late breaking developments. the father of the 14 year old alleged shooter arrested and charged tonight after authorities say his son opened fire yesterday at his school in georgia, killing four and injuring nine. abc's faith abubey is in winder, georgia for us tonight. faith. >> yeah. good evening to you, juju. authorities arresting the father of 14 year old colt gray, the suspected shooter here in winder, georgia, in connection with the shooting. authorities now charging that 54 year old father with numerous charges from felony murder to manslaughter to cruelty to children, but only explaining that they charged him because he knowingly allowed his son to have access to a gun. >> the gbi has arrested colin gray. he is charged with the following four counts of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of second degree murder and eight counts of cruelty to

children. the charges stem from mr. gray knowingly allowing his son, colt, to possess a weapon. >> and tonight, outrage and anger the suspected shooter was investigated a little more than a year ago for an alarming threat he allegedly made, causing law enforcement to question him and his family. the fbi confirmed they were tipped off about the georgia suspect in may of last year. the anonymous tip, sparked by a disturbing post on the social media site discord linked to gray. the fbi saying he had possibly threatened to shoot up a middle school. the next day. at the time, gray was in a different school in a neighboring county. the jackson county sheriff's office interviewed gray and his father. according to their records. gray denied making the post, saying he would never say such a thing, even in a joking manner. gray's father telling investigators there were guns in the house, but colt did not have unsupervised access, adding that the teenager was being picked on

and ridiculed at school. >> i worry about him in school and you know what? what would ever happen? >> the sheriff's office urged officials in jefferson city schools to monitor gray, but made no arrests, citing a lack of probable cause. gray later transferring schools. authorities say he brought an ar 15 style rifle to apalachee high school wednesday and opened fire, killing four people. video showing a long gun on the ground in a hallway. >> there was a second wave of shots that we heard. they were more rapid, and so that's when we were really like. we knew it was serious. >> the suspect surrendering to authorities just seven minutes after the school's newly installed panic alarm system was triggered, notifying students and staff to take cover and alerting authorities. two of the victims were students just 14 years old, mason schermerhorn and cristian angulo, seen here in a photo his family posted on a gofundme page. and two teachers, christina arami and

richard aspinwall, a math teacher and defensive coordinator on the football team affectionately known as coach a and juju. this case is, of course, reminiscent of the crumbley case in michigan, where the parents of the teenage mass shooter were sentenced to at least ten years in prison because they failed to prevent their son from getting a gun and killing four students. back in 2021. >> juju faith abubey in georgia tonight. thank you. and we'll have more on that story on gma tomorrow. but we turn now to the sentencing of two brothers in a tragic and deadly sextortion case. jordan demay was approached on social media by the siblings, who first posed as a teenage girl, but then turned the tables with tragic and deadly consequences. for more than two years, jennifer buda has been living a nightmare. >> this is jordan's room. her son jordan died by suicide. i always keep the door closed because it still smells like him. >> after being targeted by a

sextortion ring at the age of 17. >> it's been sitting here for two and a half years, and the pictures are falling off his room. >> a memorial to her son. >> i feel like this is something that i can come in here and look at today in this marquette, michigan, courthouse the men held responsible for jordan's death were sentenced to 17.5 years in prison. >> brothers sam and samson ogoshi, now 24 and 21, were extradited from nigeria to stand trial here in april. they pled guilty to conspiring to sexually exploit teenage boys. >> there will never be closure about jordan in my life. >> john demay is jordan's father. this unprecedented case is proof that just because there's an ocean between us doesn't mean that we aren't coming for you. the case among the first of its kind. the u.s. government operating across international borders to arrest and extradite suspects accused of extorting children. >> today sends a thundering message to every criminal or

would be criminal who operate these schemes. you are not immune from justice. >> jordan's tragic death, part of an alarming and increasing trend called sextortion, where scammers threaten to reveal a sexually compromising image or video targeting young boys between the ages of 10 to 18 across social media apps and through video games. >> today is a critical reminder for all of us who carry phones or hand them to our kids that these devices can be dangerous. our cell phones are potentially the means to connect our kids to criminal networks around the world, often posing as young teen girls. >> criminals lurk online, sliding into phones and gaming devices of unsuspecting kids. >> in 2022, there are over 7000 reported sextortion cases against children in america. in my experience, in fact, i would think that number is well over

100,000 cases that have not been reported. >> their tactics friendly and flirty. at first enticing victims into sending a nude pic, then flipping the script demanding payment under the threat, they'll expose those explicit photos to the world, especially family and friends. the goal is to ramp up that stress. >> that's also how they're getting a lot of young kids across the country to take their own lives. >> just the day before jordan was targeted, the fbi had issued a nationwide press release warning of an explosive increase in the financial sextortion of boys from october of 2021 through march of 2023, the fbi received over 13,000 reports of sextortion. the victims primarily boys. 20 children have died by suicide directly because of sextortion. >> when we see deaths resulting from sextortion, it's very likely that that's the tip of the iceberg. >> jordan dumais seemed to have everything going for him. star

athlete and homecoming king. >> jordan was a very happy guy. he was always dancing or singin, listening to music. he had a lot of friends. >> but in 2022, he had a chance encounter on instagram. >> it started out with the supposed girl saying, hey, we have some friends in common. >> that girl with the handle danny roberts, enticing jordan to send her a nude pic, then demanding money. i have screenshot all your followers and tags can send these nudes to everyone, and also send your nudes to your family and friends until it goes viral. all you have to do is to cooperate with me and i won't expose you. jordan asks how much, danny? $1,000. jordan, a victim of sextortion, now spiraling. i'll kill myself right now because of you. danny replies. good do that fast. he eventually sent danny

roberts money. >> he paid him $300. >> he paid him what he could. he sent another transaction for $20 or $30. that's all i have. i can't pay anymore. and they kept pushing and pushing and they were. holding collages with compromise photo with other photos of his friends and family and parents threatening to send it out to them and keep putting the pressure on them. they never gave him a single minute to think, and just six torturous hours from that first message. he shot himself with a firearm in his bed. it was obviously total shock. as soon as i called 911, i called jennifer and he said, jordan's gone >> and i said, no, no, no. >> then jordan's girlfriend kayla started receiving menacing messages and i randomly happened

to see a direct message on instagram with photos. >> one explicit photo of jordan. it was a random account that looked like a teenage girl. they threatened to send these photos to my family and my friends. >> kayla sought help. she told her parents and went to the police. >> they were able to get her phone and follow the ip address at that point, it's a matter of officers starting to follow the breadcrumbs. >> eight months later, a major break in the case. >> so danny roberts, as we've alleged, is a fictitious name. the perpetrators in this case secured a hacked instagram account. they found an image of an attractive young woman that they found online. they attributed it to this account and they made up a name.

>> it turns out that jordan wasn't up against just one scammer, but six of them, all located halfway around the world in nigeria, we're seeing a majority of the cases recently leading us back to western africa, specifically nigeria two of the men who targeted jordan demay were arrested in nigeria and brought to justice in the u.s. and just last month, the u.s. attorney's office charged five american defendants with money laundering related to jordan's case. since his death, jordan's parents have been urging families to talk to their kids about sextortion, financial sextortion isn't going away, and educating ourselves about the dangers of it and having those open lines of communication is so important, important in protecting our children. congress also demanding accountability. >> you have blood on your hands. you have a product. you have a product that's killing people. >> earlier this year, at a

hearing on capitol hill, meta ceo mark zuckerberg faced the families whose children died from causes they attribute to social media. >> no one should have to go through the things that your families have have suffered, and this is why we invested so much and are going to continue doing industry leading efforts to make sure that no one has to go through the types of things that your families have had to suffer. >> jordan dominguez father was there. >> there was a lot of the same old, same old and nothing has changed. >> in april, meta, the parent company of instagram, announcing a nudity protection feature in dms which blurs images and warns users to be cautious before sending sensitive photos, and in july, announcing they'd removed around 63,000 instagram accounts in nigeria, attempting to target people with financial extortion scams. >> to be honest with you, the efforts ring a little bit hollow. there is so much more that can be done for any person that finds themselves in this
