1:18 am
alive and well out there. this was pearsall's first public appearance since he was shot by a 17 year old who was trying to steal his watch at union square. and just to show you how serious pearsall is about playing football, he was released from the hospital sunday back at the team facility monday and tuesday. now, had that bullet hit pearsall an inch to the left, an inch to the right, higher or lower. this could have been a deadly tragedy. coach kyle shanahan revealed today that pearsall has a prayer tattoo right near the bullet hole. >> it's a miracle. i mean, look where he got shot is like two inches below his tattoo. with praying hands like it was. it's kind of the whole story is kind of amazing for him to be able to walk around and stuff with that happening and talking to the people at the e.r, you know, saying out of like 100 people, two people have survived that. and to be able to see him the next day and just he's able to walk, he's coming to meetings. he's doing all that. but, you know, he wants to go a little a while, you know, a week or so without trying to work up a
1:19 am
sweat. and then after that, he'll start his rehab and, progress to get back. >> yeah. the plan is rest for the next few days. pearsall then expected to begin the rehab and try to work toward a return next week, at least to the practice field. it's unclear how quickly he'll be healthy enough to actually play in his first nfl game, but the numbers that really resonated to me is kyle saying two out of 100 people survive this sort of thing. i mean, so fortunate, so very, very lucky for all of us and for him particularly. >> thanks very much. all right. >> all right. you sign up for something, then you forget about the subscription. come on. you know you've done it. the bill on the governor's desk that could make canceling as easy as a click. >> and it feels like p-g-and-e's just raised its rates. why? they could be going up again before the end of the year. >> a very close encounter in the bay area, where a whale was spotted swimming this afternoon. >> pretty cool. all of that's coming up. but first, here's a look at what's ahead tonight on jimmy kimmel live! right after abc seven news at 11, jimmy thanks, dan and ama. >> tonight our future first lady

let's go! hustle! is getting started. well, we did that 30 years ago, when california first took on the tobacco industry. this is not just about access. it's about the message it sends... now smoking is down 60 percent. lung cancer 42 percent. a couple of our cities have already ended tobacco sales. a california without big tobacco isn't just possible, it's already happening. a gma. the morning concert event old dominion tomorrow only on good morning america summer

concert series sponsored by wayfair. >> new at 11. we have some pretty remarkable video of a whale that was spotted earlier today. look at this. swimming around pillar point harbor in san mateo county. the harbor's general manager says it's a young gray or humpback, likely. that probably followed a trail of food. they were keeping a close eye on it to make sure it doesn't get stuck, and is able to swim back out to sea. >> what a fun thing to see in person. well, your p-g-and-e's bill could jump another $6 a month before the end of the year. california regulators are scheduled to vote next week to allow the utility to recoup expenses from a series of winter storms. utility watchdog groups are fighting this hike, saying ratepayers have simply had enough. there are no limits to how much the public utilities commission can grant in hikes. we're looking at the fourth rate hike in 2024 alone and every rate hike is just the tip of the
1:23 am
iceberg. >> and every hike stacked on top of each other. >> p-g-and-e's declined abc7 news request for an interview, but sent this statement, quote, p-g-and-e's is working to limit combined gas and electric bill increases to no more than an average of 3% per year through 2026. the statement goes on. p-g-and-e's has adopted company wide savings initiatives to reduce operating costs and limit unnecessary expenses. >> all right, we've all probably done this. you sign up for something online and you forget about the subscription. how nice would it be to simply click and cancel it and not have to jump through a bunch of hoops? reporter carlos granda, with our sister station in los angeles, takes a look at a bill that could do just that. if the governor signs it, it's very easy to sign up for online subscriptions. >> there is music news sites, video streaming, and more, and each one cost a few dollars every month. >> the frustration has really been growing, and those dollars can really, really add up.
1:24 am
>> most subscriptions have a free trial and then it's easy to forget about them. according to a 2022 study, 42% of consumers forgot they were paying for subscriptions they didn't use anymore. >> customers underestimated their monthly spending and subscriptions by $133 a month. >> but sometimes it's not so easy to stop these subscriptions. the consumer federation of california says that's the way the system is designed. >> you have initiated the call to cancel, and then what they try to do is keep you on the phone for as long as possible. again purposefully, people in many of these companies who are responding to those calls are paid based on their ability to keep you from canceling. >> ab 2863, which was just approved by the legislature, would make it easy. it's called a simple click to cancel. >> it will make it easier for customers to unsubscribe. so as easy as that, one click or two clicks to sign up, you can click
1:25 am
one time or two times to cancel your subscription. >> and this is one of several bills passed by the legislature in the last session that would give more protections for consumers. they say stopping those subscriptions will save people a lot of money. >> we're here partly to protect honest businesses and create a level playing field for those businesses who are cheating. a handful of california businesses, however, elect to use the shortcut of signing you up when you only wanted to buy it once. >> and the governor has until september 30th to decide if he will sign or veto these bills. in santa clarita, i'm carlos granda, abc seven news at all. >> and today was one of the few times we've heard directly from tiktok company officials. they have a new approach to online safety. concerns have been rising over social media's effect on young people. tiktok announced it's teaming up with the nonprofit family online safety institute to help parents talk to their kids about being online. >> this campaign is really about
1:26 am
providing simple, straightforward support so parents have the information that they need to really set the digital boundaries that make sense for their family. we also have a number of tools that parents can use to limit specific content. they might not want their teen to see. >> those tools include letting parents set daily screen time controls and turn off direct messages. the new campaign is launching with ads modeling how to have conversations with your children to protect them on social media. >> new at 11, san francisco's mid-market neighborhood launched a first thursdays event. it's giving free live performance experiences to the public, giving a nod to the district's long history of theater arts. beyond the street bands, there was a jazz takeover on the f line train and a drag lip sync contest. it's part of our uh- revitalizing mid-market market. >> street arts is the program, and we're using arts. the broad definition of the arts, to
1:27 am
inject life and joy back into the street. >> the event is a block long, a celebration really full of interactive arts. it's part of the city's effort to activate downtown's nightlife, arts and culture. >> abc7 has a new way for you to enjoy the beautiful views of the san francisco bay. we are debuting a new camera at fisherman's wharf today. this is the skystar cam and it is located on as you see, the skystar wheel at the wharf. >> what the wheel is providing is a new way to see san francisco and kind of rediscover why so many people around the world think of it as really the most beautiful city in the world. it really is a never before seen view in san francisco, and it just it it's just wonderful. i just i can't wait for everybody to come and experience it. >> yeah, it is super cool. the skystar wheel is offering a 15% discount for san francisco

1:29 am
humidities. i mean, especially inland, 15 to 17%. as we take a look here where the fog is sitting, the humidity remains up. but tomorrow afternoon, down to the single digits around places like redding, sacramento and even down in southern california, where they do have a red flag warning. by sunday, things will really change up as the marine influence picks up, humidity goes up, our fire danger starts to drop off, which of course is a good thing because around this time of year, with near critically dry conditions, you combine it with the low relative humidity and our fire danger does go up. so we're looking at moderate to high in our inland valleys and our hills. be prepared for that. here's a view. some views from our tower cameras. and you can certainly see. the common denominator is that shallow layer of fog like clockwork. karl, the fog is back tonight on live doppler seven, right near the coast. so not going very far. 50 to 70 on your temperatures right now from our golden gate bridge camera. it's a little socked in tomorrow, sizzling inland, triple digits
