causing a flood of calls and text messages to a 12 year old's phone in arizona. wild story there. but good morning everyone. it is friday, september 6th. >> yes, we're starting with a check of our forecast with spencer. >> you know, things are looking pretty good outside. we're winding down the week on a positive note, i think. mainly clear skies at the moment, although some little patches of fog will be around before the morning is over. a trough of low pressure cooling. low pressure is digging its way down towards the bay area, so this will be our final day of the heat wave. right now we're looking at temperature readings generally in the mid to upper 50s. 56 here in san francisco. oakland 58. some of our inland east bay areas are fairly mild to warm 60 in danville 61. concord fairfield 64 at this hour. these are our forecast headlines today. again, the final day of our triple digit heat. elevated fire danger, however, will remain with us through tomorrow. inland areas in the higher elevations are the places most at risk and the weekend forecast calls for weather turning, breezy and cooler, which is probably good news to all of us.

but for today. one more day of sizzling inland heat, we'll see high temperatures up to about 100 degrees at concord, antioch, fairfield, 99 at livermore, down in the south, bay 92 san jose. we'll see some mid to upper 80s around the bay shoreline. still quite warm in that area up in the north bay. look for highs of 91 at napa, 95 at santa rosa, 74 here in san francisco. and we'll see mid to upper 60s on the coast today. a reminder that the heat advisory is still with us until 8:00 this evening. so there's still the risk of heat related illness from overexposure to these excessively high temperatures. gloria. >> all right. happy friday to everyone out there. we're going to get started with the golden gate bridge. you can see not too many cars out there this early in the morning, but there is still a lot of fog out there today as well. yesterday, a lot of fog there. and today a dense fog advisory has been issued. so if you're driving on the golden gate bridge, drive a little slower with that fog this morning and looking live at our emeryville camera, more cars right now are driving west of the eastshore freeway. and right now starting to get a little

busy out there from highway four to san francisco. it will take you 28 minutes. >> thank you. gloria. happening today. the driver accused in a wrong-way crash in san jose that killed a mother and son set to be in court. abc seven news reporter lena howland joins us live in studio. and lena, the driver, is in jail this morning after being released from the hospital. >> kumasi. that's right. the suspect involved in this deadly crash was released from the hospital yesterday and booked into the santa clara county jail the same day. today, he's expected to make his first appearance in court. san jose residents 14 year old charlie olson and his mother, rebecca, were killed in the wrong-way crash. video shared with abc seven last week shows the moments a toyota tacoma traveling in the wrong direction on highway 85 in san jose for several minutes before crashing into the tesla. charlie and his mother were in. officials say the driver of the truck was a 39 year old man from florida who

was hospitalized with major injuries. legal analyst stephen clark says investigators are going to want to know what the pickup driver's mindset was, and whether the incident was intentional. >> second degree murder is not off the table at this point. a lot is going to come down to the toxicology results that we will receive later. were there any prescription drugs or alcohol or street drugs in his system at the time of this crash? >> the suspect is facing the following charges two counts of murder. two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, two counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence driving under the influence, causing injury, reckless driving and reckless driving causing injury. the suspect's arraignment is happening this afternoon at 130 in a santa clara county courtroom. we will let you know what happens. live in studio. lena howland, abc seven news. >> all right. thank you. lena.

san rafael police are hoping you can help them identify the people in this video. >> they smashed display cases and stole handfuls of jewelry at a store on tuesday. police arrived within minutes, but not quickly enough to stop them. no one was hurt. there was just a lot of damage. now, officers interviewed witnesses and the investigation is ongoing. if you have information, reach out to the san rafael police department. now, oakland leaders have announced an upgrade to the city's flawed 911 system. it's the first time it's been updated in 20 years. now, the improvements include a modern software system that's fully hosted on the cloud. every part of the electronics that go into the system got upgraded to mayor xiang tao says this will improve emergency response times. she says the goal is to meet the state standard of 97% of calls being answered in 15 seconds, or less. >> we've taken huge steps towards implementing reliable, secure, resilient infrastructure that our public safety agencies

can use to continue delivering the high levels of service that the city of oakland residents want and deserve. >> the new system was heavily vetted after the city's massive 2023 data leak. personal data was exposed and city services were taken offline. during that incident. >> some business owners in oakland are pushing back against a plan to turn a hotel into a homeless shelter. gloria is at the live desk with what they're saying, and the response from people who support the plan. >> kumasi seeking a solution to the homeless crisis. the oakland city council approved leasing a hotel to a nonprofit. the it's in a prime location along the that's right, part of jack london square. the city wants to turn the 110 room building into a shelter. the residents would come from another shelter that's closing down, but not everyone is happy about this decision. business owners gathered yesterday. they're against the plans. we talked with former police chief leronne armstrong, who's now running for city council. >> i don't think we need to do

anything in this city that forces businesses to think about. do they want to make that drastic decision of closing their doors or in the center of a dining and entertainment district? >> and this is not what we need. there's plenty of other opportunities in oakland to house the unhoused. >> it's not okay to stigmatize people because they're poor, and to assume that they're going to have a negative impact on your neighborhood simply because they're poor. >> those business owners say they will continue pressuring the city to find a new place to put the shelter. kumasi >> thank you. gloria. in sierra county, the bear fire has grown now to more than 3300 acres. but cal fire has made some progress. containment is now at 15%. officials allowed the sierra brooks community, which had been under evacuation to return home. the wildfire started monday afternoon off of bear valley road. >> we continue to follow the story of ricky peirsol's shooting the start of the forty-niners season is just three days away, with monday

night football, and the rookie wide receiver is going to miss at least the first four games. but we want you to take a look. pearsall was on the practice field yesterday in santa clara. that's him in the gray shirt and pants right there holding a football, walking around. he was talking to his teammates. looking good. he was shot in the chest six days ago in san francisco's union square, in what police call an attempted robbery. this is video of him walking to the ambulance. coach kyle shanahan talked before practice yesterday about the shooting, specifically about where pearsall was hit. >> it's a miracle. i mean, i think where he got shot is like two inches below his tattoo with praying hands. like it was. it's kind of the whole story is kind of amazing for him to be able to walk around and stuff with that happening and to be able to see him the next day and just he's able to walk. he's coming to meetings, he's doing all that. >> only abc7 news has this surveillance video of the suspect running and dropping the gun shortly after the shooting. the 17 year old is due back in

juvenile court on tuesday for a pretrial conference. he is charged with attempted murder, assault with a semiautomatic firearm and attempted second degree robbery. he's being kept in custody. d.a. brooke jenkins told us it will be at least two weeks before she decides if she will try to prosecute him as an adult. ultimately, it will be up to the judge to decide if the case will be moved out of the juvenile system. >> an artist and forty-niners fan is getting a lot of attention for her 40 niners art. her newest work is a well wish for ricky pearsall. rita carvalho lives in portugal and is a diehard niners fan. she went viral back in 2022 for a drawing of former 40 niners quarterback jimmy garoppolo. every day until he was traded, which was 404 days. so when she heard about ricky pearsall being shot, she knew she had to draw something. >> i think it was a way of me showing that my love, my support and also for his fans to come to my page and just use my drawing

to show also their love and their support, and that we're here for him. >> carvalho says it would be amazing if pearsall sees her drawing, but she just hopes he can focus on himself and recovering so he can get back on the field. >> a 12 year old in arizona just got his own phone this year, and he was in for a big surprise this week. lincoln schreck got hundreds of text messages meant for ricky pearsall. it turns out lincoln's number is pearsall's old number when he lived back in tempe. lincoln is now getting well wishes for pearsall from old friends. >> ricky, i'm sure you probably have a new number. praying for you tonight. i was responding wrong number to as many as i could and after a couple of them, one of them responded that it was a it was the former number of an nfl player. >> could you imagine a brand new phone for the very first time? and you you're just getting text after text. >> lincoln. he says he wants

debate between vice president harris and former president trump. it will be right here on abc seven, and you can see it at the bottom of your screen there. we are now just four days away. vice president harris is set to spend the weekend in the pittsburgh area, preparing and meeting voters. and as abc news reporter sam nguyen explains, trump will be in new york today dealing with his legal troubles. >> former president trump has scheduled a news conference today at trump tower after he heads to court. trump is set to hear arguments today in his appeal of the judgment, holding him liable for sexually assaulting and defaming writer e jean carroll. yesterday, trump outlined his economic agenda, saying he wants to cut the tax rate to 15% for companies that make products in the u.s. and punish companies that outsource jobs. >> if you outsource offshore or replace american workers, you

are not eligible for any of these benefits. in fact, you will pay a very substantial tariff when a product comes in from another country. >> the high cost of daycare also a subject on the campaign trail. trump's running mate, j.d. vance, says costs could come down if regulations were eliminated, but also suggested using family members for free. >> maybe like grandma or grandpa wants to help out a little bit more. or maybe there's an aunt or uncle that wants to help out a little bit more. if that happens, you relieve some of the pressure on all the resources that we're spending on daycare for their economic platform. >> the harris walz ticket has vowed to expand the child tax credit, fight corporate price gouging, and they're promising tax relief for small businesses. >> so we know this will be a tight race. but the good news is we've got a better plan to work with people. we've got a better opportunity for folks when they see an opportunity economy. we got a better candidate in kamala harris. >> harris's running mate, tim walz in pennsylvania, sharpening his attack on trump.

pretty wild. >> i hope it makes its way back out to sea where it belongs. yes, right. absolutely. hey, you know, it's friday and the weather news is good. yeah. on this final day of the week, we are turning cooler over the weekend. over the weekend? we still have to wait through the day. but the reason for this turn in our weather pattern is this little uh- upper level trough making a dig down towards the bay area, bringing cooler air from up in the pacific northwest our way. but that air won't arrive until tomorrow. right now we're looking at temperature readings mainly in the mid to upper 50s from the coast over to the east bay, and the inland areas are warming up already into the low to mid 60s. and of course they'll continue warming later in the day. these are the forecast headlines. this will be the final day of our triple digit heat. they're still elevated fire danger through the weekend or through tomorrow, at least into the weekend, especially in our inland areas and in the higher elevations. but the weekend forecast, as i mentioned, calls for conditions being breezy and cooler, and that cooling pattern will continue into next week. but for today, look for more high temperatures around 100 degrees

and many of our inland locations like antioch, concord, fairfield, up in the north bay, we'll see some low to mid 90s. high of about 95 at santa rosa. around the bay shoreline. generally mid to upper 80s on the coast. we'll see highs in the mid to upper 60s once again. our heat advisory remains in effect until 8:00 this evening. and that means there's still an elevated risk of heat related illnesses under these extremely high temperatures, ranging from 95 to about 105. as for fire danger, the fire danger index shows that we are low range of fire danger right now, but as we get later into the day, we'll see more areas in the blue and yellow, the moderate to high risk. and then that will diminish overnight tonight. but again tomorrow we'll see more locations in the moderate to high risk range. afternoon highs today are actually going into the weekend. notice the cooldown tomorrow. we'll see only 80s and low 90s tomorrow. where today we'll see triple digits. that range of highs will hold through sunday and then on monday going into early next week we'll have even further cooling. so that's good news. this heat wave is

of marketers plan to cut spending on the platform in 2025. now the main issue is something called brand safety, which is certainty their ads won't appear alongside extreme content. now the pullback would be the biggest ever recorded on any major global ad platform. a spokesperson says x's brand safety is stronger than ever before. >> san bruno based youtube is making new tools to help protect creators from copycats. made by ai. one tool would be able to identify content simulating a creator's voice. that could roll out next year. the other would be able to detect deepfake videos using a person's face. it's not clear when that would be available. youtube is also promising to crack down on anyone who is scraping the site to build ai tools. >> tiktok is taking a new approach to online safety. the popular social media app is teaming up with a nonprofit family online safety institute, to help parents talk about their kids or talk to their kids. i should say about being online.

now the father of the suspected teen shooter at a georgia high school now under arrest at 530. the charges he and his son now face that teen suspected in the shooting is expected in court this morning. >> the hanford police conduct was not only irresponsible, but it was also inhumane. >> santa cruz police say an unhoused woman was brought nearly 200 miles and dropped off at a local shelter. hanford officials say that's not the whole story. the action now being considered to prevent incidents like this from

wednesday's attack. abc news has learned that colin gifted the gun to colt for christmas last may. the fbi investigated several tips saying that colt had possibly threatened to shoot up a middle school. at the time, his father told investigators that there were guns in the house, but that colt did not have unsupervised access. he said he was teaching his son about hunting. authorities say that colt opened fire on wednesday morning, killing four people and injuring at least nine others. >> you just hear gunshots. it was about 10 to 15 of them at once. >> back to back, and then everyone just kind of ducks to the floor, >> and we all kind of sporadically crawl. we don't really know which corner to go to. >> colt's aunt told abc news that he was, quote, begging for months for help with his mental health. all nine victims who were hurt are expected to make a full recovery. amanda. >> all right. gloria. thank you. >> and a major bust in the south

bay. police seized weapons and explosives from a home near san jose. santa clara county law enforcement served a search warrant to enter the home near bailey avenue. police say the suspect has a restraining order against him from a domestic violence case, and is not allowed to possess any firearms. they believe he has been manufacturing illegal explosive devices and guns. and the search? they obtained three firearms, ammunition, fuzes, cylinder tubes and large amounts of black powder. the suspect has been arrested and is facing charges. >> on the coast, a battle over how to treat people experiencing homelessness has santa cruz officials proposing a new ordinance. on tuesday, the city council will consider a proposal to make it illegal for employees of other cities or governments to drop off unhoused people in the city. this proposal is coming after officials say officers from hanford, which is in the central valley, recently drove 181 miles to drop off a

disabled unhoused woman at a shelter in santa cruz. officials say they work hard to protect the homeless in their community, and they believe other cities should do the same. >> we can't just take somebody's civil liberties away and put them into a vehicle and transport them anywhere, let alone another community. >> when santa cruz police called hanford police about what happened. they claim the police hung up on them. hanford police issued a statement saying, we strongly disagree with the city of santa cruz's assessment that the city of hanford is moving its homeless problem elsewhere in this instance. officers provided a service at the request of the individual. >> san jose mayor matt mehan unveiled the location of the city's first planned safe sleeping site. it is located on east taylor street near coyote creek and watson park. the location was selected from eight potential sites. officials say

are already approaching mid 60s. so it's going to be a warm day today. this will be the final day of our triple digit heat. we still have elevated fire danger though, going into the weekend, but the weekend will also bring us cooler and breezier weather, which of course is going to be quite a relief from the four days of extreme heat that we've had. fire danger index indicates that right now we're in the low fire danger range, but as we get into the afternoon, it heats up. of course, we'll see more areas in the blue and yellow, the low to moderate fire danger overnight, of course, the we drop back into the low range. but again tomorrow under the warm up in the afternoon we'll see elevated to moderate moderate to high fire risk in the inland areas and in the higher elevations. but still low fire danger back near the coast and near the bay. when we go to this afternoon, high temperatures will reach 100 at antioch, concord, fairfield, 99 at livermore, 90 in the north bay, and the south bay, mainly mid to upper 80s around the bay shoreline. and this is the accuweather seven day forecast. here comes the cool down over the weekend. inland highs dropping about ten degrees or
