you know exactly when and what the temperatures will look like for the weekend. coming up, when abc seven news at six begins. >> always live. abc seven news starts right now for humanity thrive, we need to be able to be optimistic about the future. >> optimistic about the future that is part of building a better bay area. good evening. i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks so much for joining us. we talk about building a better bay area. so tonight let's focus on the bay part. >> and not just the bay but also the oceans that connect us to the world. what does it take to keep them healthy and thriving for generations to come? >> trash certainly is not the answer. the great pacific garbage patch is the biggest pile of plastic in the ocean in the world, and it's floating in between california and hawaii. it is twice the size of texas, but it could be cleaned up in just five years at a cost of $4 billion. abc seven news reporter tim johns is live on the ship
6:01 pm
that's making a difference in this really challenging struggle. tim >> yeah, dan, i am on the deck of that ship, but i want to show you guys what i'm standing beside. take a look at these giant bags here. now, just for reference, i'm six feet tall. so you get a little bit of an idea of how massive these things are. now, each one of them is filled with plastic cans, other forms of debris that came from the ocean. and while it may look like we've done a good job so far cleaning this mess up, i'm told there's still a lot more work to do. floating in the middle of the ocean is a giant collection of trash and debris that's come to be known as the great pacific garbage patch. the accumulation of plastics, cans, and other waste has become one of the most prominent examples of the environmental crisis engulfing the planet, threatening not just marine life, but also humans. it's a plastic. >> pollution is one of the largest threats our ocean faces today. it's ravaging ecosystems. there are more than 100 species threatened with extinction because of plastic. >> boyan slat is the ceo of a
6:02 pm
company called the ocean cleanup. six years ago, they sent two ships out to the garbage patch in an effort to develop technology to clean it up for good. on friday, those same two ships made their way back into san francisco bay, this time having developed the technology needed for the massive undertaking, slat says the only thing preventing that from becoming a reality now is money. >> once that's secured, we can ramp this up in about 2 or 3 years, and then the clock starts running and we can clear up the patch in potentially just five years. >> slat estimates the total cost would be somewhere between 4 and $7.5 billion, a small price to pay, says matthias edgar. edgar was one of the scientists on the expeditions who helped develop the technology needed for the cleanup. a system of netting, cameras and computers powered by artificial intelligence. >> you have big waves and you have a harsh environment, and to build something that actually surviving out there while at the same time only make sure you catch plastic and not marine life, that was quite a challenge. >> once the trash is pulled from
6:03 pm
the sea, it's then sorted on the ships and ultimately recycled. edgar taking time to point out to us the sunglasses he was wearing, being one of the recycled products that's been made. >> the stuff out there has has value. you know, it's not only trash, it's actually a resource that we can use. >> despite the steps that still need to be taken, slat says he's optimistic about getting the patch cleaned up one step he hopes that would inspire others to tackle even more of the environmental issues of our time for humanity to thrive, we need to be able to be optimistic about the future. >> and i think if we can clean up the great pacific garbage patch, this seemingly insurmountable thing, i think it's just going to be an inspiration for many people. >> and guys, that message is something we heard repeatedly today. these folks out here want to get this mess cleaned up once and for all, not just for the environmental impacts. it would have in and of itself, but to inspire future generations and more people to tackle some of the greater environmental challenges we face as humanity. dan. ama. >> all right. tim, this is just
6:04 pm
utterly fascinating. twice the size of texas. it's just a remarkable problem. and 4 to $7.5 billion to clean it up. that's not obviously an insignificant amount of money. where is the ocean cleanup? hoping to get that money from? >> you're right. it is. a lot of money in the grand scheme. they would argue it's not that much considering we spend things on so many other projects, but i'm told that they're open. they're open to working with governments. they're open to working with private companies, with donors. just again, the main message is they want to get this cleaned up for the benefit of us all. >> tim, thanks very much. >> now to breaking news out of the south bay, where a house is on fire in saratoga. look at that big plume of smoke that is creating. this is time lapse video of the fire happening on costa court near prospect high school. according to a tweet from the santa clara county fire department, it's a two alarm fire that started just before five. look at this video here. this is video that the fire department posted on x. you can
6:05 pm
see crews at the front door and all the smoke filling the home. so far no reports of any injuries. a wildfire burning in fresno county has now scorched more than 17,000 acres. evacuation orders and road closures remain in place because of the boone fire near coalinga. the fire is just 10% contained. it's been burning since tuesday afternoon, but there are no reports of injuries or property damage so far. still unclear how the fire started. the san francisco fire department tweeted video this morning showing crews from sfpd and san bruno heading out to the boone fire. they will be deployed for 15 days, protecting homes and businesses as part of a larger state response. >> of course, the heat is a factor in all of this. another hot day inland today. there's still a heat advisory in place, but hopefully we're getting some changes here. >> let's get to meteorologist sandhya patel for the latest. sandhya. we are indeed. >> and in time for the weekend. ama and dan. let's take a look at the high temperatures for today. got up into the triple digits in fairfield. ukiah. unofficial reporting site for livermore 99 today. the official

as we look across the bay. if you look in the distance, a good day to be out sailing. this is from our skystar wheel at fisherman's wharf, and you really could just sit on this because it is just an amazing view that we're getting, but we've got to get to the rest of the weather. so we're already seeing changes underway. onshore winds are picking up 25 miles an hour at sfo. oakland 14 miles an hour. that is beginning the cooling process down five degrees in san francisco. it is four degrees cooler right now in concord. humidity values are still a little bit on the low side. 17% in livermore, 15 there in brentwood, 11 in cloverdale. and some of the concern here is that you combine it with near critically dry fuels, and you've got yourself the potential for fire danger, even though the winds are not that strong. so tonight, inland areas moderate to high. even though the temperatures come down, i think the wind will be picking up so moderate to high inland lingering into tomorrow. changes

enough the rest of the season. so we've got to trust the process. >> aaron has already figured out the new york media. joe buck and troy aikman, they'll call the 40 niners. jets game. and before every niners game, they sit down with kyle shanahan as well as a handful of players. that's part of their game prep. shanahan gets so detailed in these conversations, breaking down the strategy that the niners will use all the motion concepts, as well as the expected coverage schemes from the opposing defense. it's why if you watch games, shanahan has the reputation of being a play designing genius. >> the cool thing is to talk to kyle first. when we do and we get his game plan, and then you talk to the other team, whoever that is, and you, you see how it fits. what kyle said. here's what they're going to do. here's how they're going to try to beat us. here's how we can beat them. here's where they're weak. it fits together. and it's like, man. >> more remind. one more

twice the size of texas. the accumulation of plastics, cans and other garbage that has become the poster child for the global environmental crisis facing our planet. and while some might debate to what extent humans are causing global warming, we cannot pass the buck on this one. it's our junk and there's no excuse. as i said, it is embarrassing. it's much worse than that. actually. it's grotesque and shameful. the researchers on those two ships that just came into san francisco report the garbage patch can be removed. the cost between 4 and $7 billion. a lot of money. but what really matters ultimately, a small price to pay. i always love to hear from you. let me know what you think. follow me on social media at dan ashley abc seven. >> and that is going to do it for this edition of abc seven news. thank you for being here with us. >> i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley for sandhya patel, larry beil, all of us. we appreciate
