down his latest proposal. >> and these gummy bears friday. >> governor gavin newsom introducing emergency regulations banning products containing thc from being sold outside of dispensaries. >> want these products off the shelf? we want the retailers, the grocers to get them off themselves today. >> officials say the new rules are aimed particularly at protecting children from potentially harmful health effects of intoxicating hemp products. >> i mean, i don't know how you know or realize this is a hemp product, says tune up sparkling water. i mean, you can barely find that it's thc in there and it's not just thc. >> the tougher regulations would expand the number of psychoactive cannabinoids that will need to be undetectable in order to be sold outside of dispensaries. >> cdph determining based on science, has added another 30 that go into that undetectable sense. >> and as far as the public's perspective, we spoke with

people outside a mill valley grocery store about the potential regulations. >> i think that thc can be really beneficial for people, but as far as like children getting their hands on it, i think that that could be potentially controversial. >> thc. >> i wasn't aware of that, but definitely has to be regulated and monitored. >> and do you think it should even be in stores that like a grocery store? >> absolutely not. absolutely not. why would why? >> and from parents and grandparents to pet parents. >> this is my child. so i don't have human children, but i sure wouldn't want my children taking in thc without just by chance. >> but the governor getting some pushback friday from the industry, the u.s. hemp roundtable saying it's exploring legal options. a statement reading in part, newsom has decided to unilaterally destroy countless small businesses and farmers across california. we will not let this stand without a fight. the governor, however, quite clear we don't want to kill the hemp industry. >> we want the hemp industry to

be regulated. was intended not for intoxicating products. >> tara campbell, abc seven news. >> the proposed regulations are still requiring approval from the california's office of administrative law. now if that happens, the rules will go into effect immediately. that means stores will have to remove any consumable products containing any level of thc. and san francisco, a security guard is recovering after he was stabbed at a walgreens friday morning. it happened on the corner of montgomery street. police say the guard was trying to stop someone from stealing items from the store. there was a confrontation, and that's when the suspect stabbed the guard and ran off. no arrests have been made. the guard's injuries are described as non-life threatening. now to the murder case of a prominent tech executive. prosecutors say he stabbed and killed the cash app founder in april of last year, and the defense is now saying the victim, bob lee, was the

aggressor. abc seven news i-team reporter melanie woodrow has covered this case from the beginning and has the very latest. >> the defense attorney revealing his defense strategy ahead of the bob lee murder trial. >> when everything is put together, it's going to be a clear sign for the jury to understand unequivocally that this case was a case of self-defense. >> some, zanganeh says it's likely momenti will testify. >> i think that it would be a good bet to consider that mr. mulvaney will kind of educate the jury as to exactly what transpired. >> momeni is accused of stabbing lee in san francisco's soma neighborhood during the early morning hours of april 4th. writers have suggested his sister was at the center of a confrontation between momeni and lee, who were seen together leaving his apartment building prior to the stabbing. charging documents included a text to momeni sent lee stating in part, i know nima came way down hard on you and thanking lee for handling it with class. as for whether she will take the stand. >> i think that she's an important witness to educate

people on certain aspects, but it's a game time decision. >> prosecutors have said the knife used to stab lee came from hussar's apartment. >> i don't think there's any evidence to suggest that nima took it. and i think that there's substantial evidence that we have to suggest that bob lee bought it with it. >> zanganeh also argues if momeni were guilty, he wouldn't have thrown the knife so close to the scene. legal analyst stephen clark says the drugs found in bob lee's system are likely to play an active role in the defense's strategy. >> mr. momeni will likely say that mr. lee was acting irrationally and erratically and aggressively, and that's why he took the actions that he did. >> by text bob lee's ex-wife told abc seven news, quote, i find it absurd that the defense is trying to redirect and accuse bob of acting violent or erratic. >> if this case is reduced to voluntary manslaughter, that will greatly reduce the sentence he's exposed to. >> zanganeh says the defense is not asking for a reduced charge. >> there's only one verdict that a reasonable jury could come up

with, and that's a that's a verdict of not guilty. >> in san francisco, for the iteam melanie woodrow, abc seven news. >> in the south bay, now the driver arrested for a wrong-way crash that killed a mother and her son has been arraigned on murder charges. duncan mcquarrie could barely be seen behind his attorney in this photo. he appeared to be in a wheelchair during yesterday's hearing in san jose. he's charged with two counts of murder. investigators say mcquarrie was under the influence at the time. he was reportedly driving over 100mph in the wrong direction on highway 85, when his truck smashed into an oncoming car on august 26th. 47 year old rebecca olson and her 14 year old son charlie. you see here, both died in the collision. >> at one point, the defendant stopped his car and got out and walked around in the middle of the traffic. he then got back into his vehicle and continued to drive the wrong way. >> prosecutors say mcquarrie is

from florida. he came to the bay area to visit family less than a week before this crash. he's currently being held in the santa clara county jail without bail. in the east bay now, the oakland police department will not emerge from federal oversight. just yet after a ruling from a judge. judge william orrick ordered the department to restructure its organizational chart. that way, the internal affairs division reports directly to the police chief. the oversight stems from the 2003 riders case, where four officers were accused of brutalizing people in west oakland. civil rights attorney john burris was one of the original attorneys on this case. >> i think he basically says that we can't do the same old thing and expect a different result. we got to try something different, and i want to i'm going to take better control over this and hold people more accountable, and particularly the police chief. >> the judge ordered police chief floyd mitchell must have meetings to update the mayor, the city and the federal

monitoring team every two weeks. the next status conference on opd's federal oversight is set for january. dublin police have arrested two people they say were involved in an assault on a teen at dublin high school last month. an 18 year old former student and a 17 year old. the two are related to a mother and daughter also involved in this incident. police say the mother and daughter confronted the victim regarding some recent conflicts, but they were not involved in the actual attack. police are still searching for other suspects. a house is a total loss after a fire in saratoga last night. thankfully no injuries were reported, but you see this video in fire. crews got the flames under control. they estimate more than $1 million in damages to the four bedroom house. the wind posed a challenge in their efforts, but no other buildings were damaged. they're still investigating the cause. the large wildfire burning in fresno

county has now scorched more than 17,000 acres and continues to grow. this morning. evacuation orders and road closures remain in place because of the boone fire, centered near coalinga. cal fire says the fire has also spread west into monterey county. it's been burning since tuesday. there are no reports of any injuries or property damage so far, and it's still unclear how the fire started. all right, let's check on conditions outside. how's it looking, lisa? >> very pretty here. from our perspective above mount tam, at about 2400ft, 78 degrees relative humidity only at about 8%. so certainly dry in the upper levels of the atmosphere. and we're going to get into some slightly cooler weather in your neighborhood. i'll tell you how much cooler to start the weeken. and then we're going to talk about maximum cooling by about tuesday. that's all coming up. >> lisa thank you. also coming up, the recent heat posing a

towercameras at 613. have you noticed more flies in your house this summer? federal, state and county agencies are working to eradicate the mediterranean fruit fly in alameda county. it's a two part effort. they'll try to prevent the fruit flies from breeding, but they're also implementing a quarantine. the quarantine area covers over 70mi■!s within fremont and newa. people are asked not to move any homegrown fruits or vegetables from their property. the last time there was a fly quarantine in alameda county was back in

the bay. the cooling continues into the workweek. i'll have full details on that in a few minutes. stephanie. >> all right, lisa, thank you. new this morning. boeing's starliner is back home on earth, but without the astronauts, it left to space with. the starliner landed in new mexico while you were sleeping. the capsule has been stuck in space for three months after it experienced several technical problems. at 12:01 a.m, the capsule touched down on earth and nasa officials called the landing a success. despite these setbacks, it was a great day today to return starliner. >> it was great to have a successful undocked deorbit and landing of the vehicle. we're really excited to have calypso back on the ground. >> starliner is original crew of butch wilmore and suni williams prepped the capsule for return. they remain at the international space station. the two astronauts are scheduled to return to earth in early 2025. they will be picked up by a spacex vessel. new developments.

students at apalachee high school in georgia will not return to school tuesday, when other schools in the county return. that's where a gunman shot and killed two students and two teachers earlier this week. hundreds of people gathered last night for a vigil on campus. state senator raphael warnock and other local officials spoke at the makeshift memorial this morning. we're learning from a 14 year old student who said he took cover when he heard gunshots. that's when he realized he was bleeding. >> when they shot the first the first bullet, i went straight down to under my desk to cover myself. then the shot like around 4 to 6, i think, and it went to the other classroom. after he went to the other classroom, i asked him, i stand up quickly, then went to go close the door for couldn't come back. >> the teenager accused of the

shooting and his father made their first appearances in court yesterday. 14 year old colt gray faces four counts of felony murder. his father, 54 year old colin gray, is charged on multiple counts of second degree murder and manslaughter. he's accused of allowing his son to have access to the ar 15 style rifle used in the shooting. the underage suspect will be tried as an adult. the judge and former president donald trump's criminal hush money case delayed his sentencing on friday. abc news reporter derrick dennis tells us when trump could face potential consequences. >> the judge in donald trump's hush money trial giving a big break to the former president friday by agreeing to delay his sentencing until after the election. trump was convicted in may of 34 counts of falsifying business records to cover up a hush money payment to star stormy daniels. he was set to be sentenced on september 18th. judge juan merchan, now moving

begin at 5:00. closer to home now. two ships returned to the san francisco bay years after researching how to fix an environmental crisis in the pacific ocean. the ocean cleanup sent out two boats to research the great pacific garbage patch six years ago. it's a company focused on building new technology to clean up the world's oceans. the great pacific garbage patch is a giant collection of trash and debris floating around the ocean. finding a solution for a massive amount of waste is challenging by itself, but the ocean environment adds extra obstacles. >> you have big waves and you have a harsh environment. and to build something that actually surviving out there while at the same time only make sure you catch plastic and not marine life. that was quite a challeng. >> the company says it has a solution, but it needs between 4 and $7.5 billion to make it happen. the tech includes netting, cameras and computers powered by ai. once trash is

pulled and sorted, the company recycles it into new products. the port of san francisco engineers have determined pier 54 is structurally unsound. according to sfgate, the crumbling pier near the chase center will be closed down by the end of the year. the 11 businesses on it must shutter or relocate by then. float guys is one of those businesses making parade floats for the city's big events. the pier will soon sit unoccupied until the port finds the funds to remove it. well, it's now easier than ever to visit one of san francisco's gems. muni riders can take the bus to a brand new stop, getting them further inside the presidio. sfmta extended their muni 30 line to now end off of mason street. muni has been planning on establishing the new line to help give more people access to the area. being able to have a bus line that goes to some of the most underserved portions of the city come to

cloud deck. you can see some high clouds in the north bay. they'll pull back temporary clearing at the coast. so really a nice looking day today, although still above average with some of those low to mid 90s arriving inland. the fog pushes back across the bay into your sunday and then pulling back once again sunday afternoon. so as we look at our inland valleys throughout the next seven days, here's concord mid 90s. so no changes for the weekend from today to tomorrow, and then a slight drop off on monday, 80 on tuesday. so that's a big drop off. and then recovering just a little bit on wednesday. warmer thursday and friday in the south bay. today we are into the mid 80s. you are in the low 90s yesterday for san jose 86 today, 83 milpitas 82, in sunnyvale on the peninsula. low 80s here. redwood city 76 in san mateo. that sea breeze kicking up and partial clearing here downtown 70. so not a whole lot of change from the coast to the city, but pleasant nonetheless. up in the north
