clearly, but it is sunny in walnut creek and in our inland valleys. 55 downtown with the clouds, 59. in oakland. so pretty chilly as the nights are longer from mount tam. low 50s in santa rosa and 62 in concord. there's fog up towards santa rosa. dense fog advisory for the monterey coast and over two mile visibility, half moon bay. so 2 to 3 degrees cooler right now in general, 2 to 5 degrees cooler as we go through the afternoon. mid to late morning clearing. and we'll see those temperatures climb through the low 90s for most maybe a few mid 90s out towards brentwood, upper 70s to low 80s around the bay shore, and some partial clearing at the coast. stephanie. >> all right, lisa, thank you. back to our top story. governor gavin newsom is proposing emergency regulations to protect children from dangerous products containing thc. the governor says they're popping up in grocery and corner stores across the state. abc seven news reporter tara campbell breaks down his latest proposal. >> and these gummy bears. >> friday, governor gavin newsom introducing emergency

regulations banning products containing thc from being sold outside of dispensaries. >> we want these products off the shelf. we want the retailers, the grocers to get them off themselves today. >> officials say the new rules are aimed particularly at protecting children from potentially harmful health effects of intoxicating hemp products. i mean, i don't know how you know or realize this is a hemp product, says tune up sparkling water and then you can barely find that it's thc in there. and it's not just thc. the tougher regulations would expand the number of psychoactive cannabinoids that will need to be undetectable in order to be sold outside of dispensaries. >> cdph determining based on science, has added another 30 that go into that undetectable sense. >> and as far as the public's perspective, we spoke with people outside a mill valley grocery store about the potential regulations. >> i think that thc can be really beneficial for people,

but as far as like children getting their hands on it, i think that that could be potentially controversial. thc. >> i wasn't aware of that, but definitely has to be regulated and monitored. >> and do you think it should even be in stores that like a grocery store? >> absolutely not. absolutely not. why would why and from parents and grandparents to pet parents. >> this is my child. >> so i don't have human children, but i sure wouldn't want my children taking in thc without just by chance. >> but the governor getting some pushback friday from the industry, the u.s. hemp roundtable saying it's exploring legal options. a statement reading in part, newsom has decided to unilaterally destroy countless small businesses and farmers across california. we will not let this stand without a fight. the governor, however, quite clear we don't want to kill the hemp industry. >> we want the hemp industry to be regulated. it was intended not for intoxicating products. >> tara campbell, abc seven news. >> now, the proposed regulations

will still require approval from california's office of administrative law. if that happens, the rules will go into effect immediately. and that means stores will have to remove any consumable products containing any level of thc. and san francisco now. a security guard is recovering after he was stabbed at a walgreens friday morning. it happened on the corner of montgomery street. police say the guard was trying to stop someone from stealing items from the store. there was a confrontation, and that's when the suspect stabbed the guard and ran off. no arrests have been made. the guard's injuries are described as non-life threatening. now to the murder case of a prominent tech executive. prosecutors say nima momeni stabbed and killed the cash app founder in april of last year, and the defense is now saying the victim, bob li, was the aggressor. abc seven news i-team reporter melanie woodrow has covered this case from the beginning and has the very latest.

>> nima moments defense attorney revealing his defense strategy ahead of the bob li murder trial. >> when everything is put together, it's going to be a clear sign for the jury to understand unequivocally that this case was a case of self-defense. >> some, zanganeh says it's likely momeni will testify. >> i think that it would be a good bet to consider that mr. mulvaney will kind of educate the jury as to exactly what transpired. >> momeni is accused of stabbing li in san francisco's soma neighborhood during the early morning hours of april 4th. prosecutors have suggested momeni sister was at the center of a confrontation between momeni and li, who were seen together leaving armani's apartment building prior to the stabbing. charging documents included a text momeni sent li stating in part, i know nima came way down hard on you and thanking li for handling it with class. as for whether she will take the stand. >> i think that she's an important witness to educate people on certain aspects, but it's a game time decision. >> prosecutors have said the knife used to stab li came from hussar's apartment. >> i don't think there's any evidence to suggest that nima

took it. and i think that there's substantial evidence that we have to suggest that bob li bought it with it. >> zanganeh also argues if momeni were guilty, he wouldn't have thrown the knife so close to the scene. legal analyst steven clark says the drugs found in bob li's system are likely to play an active role in the defense's strategy. >> mr. momeni will likely say that mr. li was acting irrationally and erratically and aggressively, and that's why he took the actions that he did by text, bob li's ex-wife told abc seven news, quote, i find it absurd that the defense is trying to redirect and accuse bob of acting violent or erratic. >> if this case is reduced to voluntary manslaughter, that will greatly reduce the sentence he's exposed to. zanganeh says the defense is not asking for a reduced charge. >> there's only one verdict that a reasonable jury could come up with, and that's a that's a verdict of not guilty. >> in san francisco, for the iteam melanie woodrow, abc seven news. >> in the south bay, the driver

arrested for a wrong-way crash that killed a mother and son has been arraigned on murder charges. duncan mcquarrie could barely be seen behind his attorney. he appeared to be in a wheelchair during yesterday's hearing in san jose. he's charged with two counts of murder. investigators say mcquarrie was under the influence at the time he was reportedly driving over 100mph in the wrong direction on highway 85 when his truck smashed into an oncoming car on august 26th. now, 47 year old rebecca olson and her 14 year old son charlie. you see here, both died in that collision. >> at one point, the defendant stopped his car and got out and walked around in the middle of the traffic. he then got back into his vehicle and continued to drive the wrong way. >> prosecutors say mcquarrie is from florida. he came to the bay area to visit family less than a week before this crash. he's currently being held in the

santa clara county jail without bail. in the east bay, now, the oakland police department will not emerge from federal oversight. just yet after a ruling from the judge. judge william orrick ordered the department to restructure its organizational chart. that way, the internal affairs division reports directly to the police chief. the oversight stems from the 2003 riders case, when four officers were accused of brutalizing people in west oakland. civil rights attorney john burris was one of the original attorneys on this case. >> i think he basically says that we can't do the same old thing and expect a different result. we got to try something different, and i want to i'm going to take better control over this and hold people more accountable. and particularly the police chief. >> the judge ordered police chief floyd mitchell must have meetings to update the mayor. the city and the federal monitoring team every two weeks. the next status conference on opd's federal oversight is set for january. dublin police have

arrested two people they say were involved in an assault on a teen at dublin high school last month. an 18 year old former student and a 17 year old. the two are related to a mother and daughter also involved in this incident. police say the mother and daughter confronted the victim regarding some recent conflicts, but they were not actually involved in the attack. police are still searching for more suspects. a house is a total loss after a fire in saratoga last night. thankfully, no injuries were reported. fire crews got the flames under control and they estimate more than $1 million in damages to the four bedroom house. the wind posed a challenge in their efforts, but no other buildings were damaged. they're still investigating the cause. the large wildfire burning in fresno county has now scorched more than 17,000 acres and continues to grow this morning. evacuation orders and road closures remain in place because of the boone fire centered near coalinga. cal fire says the fire has also

welcome back. here's a live look atop our roof camera of the bay bridge this morning. it's 813 happening tomorrow. the first ever nine, eight, eight day will raise awareness of an important mental health resource, the 988 suicide and crisis lifeline was rolled out two years ago to save lives and give support to those who struggle the most. since then, officials say more than 10 million texts, calls and chats have been answered quite a high number that lets us know that there are people that are in need of this service, whether that's a mental health crisis, people experiencing depression, anxiety, people having concerns about substance misuse, and et cetera. >> so it's for any type of crisis. >> this new tradition is being set on september 8th in an effort to help more people. last year, they expanded services for spanish speakers, lgbtq youth, and for those who are hearing

impaired. again, that number is nine eight, eight. and for local resources to help mental health, we encourage you to go to our website, abc7 news.com/take action. all right. have you noticed more flies in your house this summer? federal, state and county agencies are working to eradicate the mediterranean fruit fly in alameda county. it's a two part effort will try to prevent the fruit flies from breeding, but they're also implementing a quarantine. the quarantine area covers over 70mi■!s within fremont and newa. people are asked not to move any homegrown fruits or vegetables from their property. the last time there was a red fly quarantine in alameda county was back in 1981. so football season is upon us and now there's a new way to get fans involved. the 40 niners play their opener on monday night right here on abc seven. and it's the online army that's getting people ready. abc seven news, south bay reporter

like the human body. >> when it gets hot, the grapevine shuts down. so if you get over probably 92 degrees that wants to go to sleep. >> associate winemaker justin schuchart says the concern is dehydration and overripening, and the heat poses a challenge because, we really want to get that fruit off the vine before the heat can start to damage the fruit. staying ahead of the weather and knowing when to irrigate is key. >> so it's sitting there with water in the vine, so when the heat comes on, it can take it out of the vineyard. >> steve is checking on his old vines and grapes. >> well, you know, we're supposed to get cool now. cool down a little bit. which is really good. that slower ripening process. >> the sonoma valley vintners alliance says growing season always has curveballs. >> mother nature is quite the force to contend with. so what the vintners and growers really try to do is work with mother nature, and she really designates when things are

so yes, so much earlier, right? 64 here in san jose with 56 in redwood city. and that marine layer, pretty compressed on the peninsula here. 52 santa rosa. it is cooler in the north bay, 64 by the delta with that southwest wind initiating some of that marine air inland and finally, looking at salesforce with that marine layer getting a little bit more compressed as the morning goes on. so the cooling begins this weekend. the fog expands each and every day until it mixes out totally by about tuesday, and we'll look for the coolest days to be tuesday and into wednesday of next week. here's a look at the plan today, where you see some high clouds holding on to parts of sonoma and napa through the 10:00 hour, and then it's full sunshine, even at the coast 60s there. and then the fog all the way into the east bay for your sunday morning. little change as that sea breeze is about up to 20 miles an hour each and every day, so that will keep us in the low to mid 90s inland. and

monday about the same. so we'll continue the summertime pattern. not quite as hot as we were, but still above average with these warm numbers here. 60s and 70s to near 80 around the bay. coolest day of the week is tuesday, when we see highs just in the lower 80s out towards antioch. that is a really cool day. while we have upper seconds in concord, danville just 77 and those 60s reaching across the bay over into oakland. wednesday's slightly warmer could be even more warmer around hayward and fremont as we come up. maybe five degrees. but then the warming trend continues into thursday and friday of next week. 76 today in oakland, it was 80 yesterday. we were 98. in napa. so 80 today, 70 downtown with sunny skies, some fog moving in throughout the afternoon. we'll see that fog retreat though throughout the morning hours today. 86 in san jose was 92 yesterday, so that cool down for you. and then overnight tonight we see a

down the number of added jobs did not meet expectations. the

bureau of labor statistics reports the u.s. economy added 142,000 jobs last month, while hiring is slowing down. the unemployment rate dropped to 4.2%. the biden administration saying the jobs report shows the economy is steadily growing and stable. >> what we've seen by all indicators is that sort of soft landing that everyone you know, is that is that going to be possible? you know, we think about it as reaching our cruising altitude. >> wage growth continues to surpass inflation. this likely means the federal reserve will cut interest rates come mid-september. analysts believe at this point, a recession is unlikely. new this morning, educators at city college of san francisco are worried that the school's ability to offer free tuition to some students is under threat. currently, the college offer free tuition to all san franciscans, but in the new budget from the city, that

live. good morning everybody. we're following some breaking news. there was reports of a 4.2 magnitude earthquake southeast of geysers this morning. some of the shaking was felt in santa rosa, we hear. what are you hearing? >> yes. and, you know, it's just about a little over a mile east of the geysers there. so. yes, certainly some shaking on the shelves there, but no reports of damage yet. and this earthquake was followed by a stronger one up to the north in cobb. but we are looking at a nice cooldown today getting underway, where temperatures will be anywhere from 2 to 5 degrees cooler. 58 right now in santa cruz, there's a live look outside where it is 56 with the clouds downtown, 59 in oakland and redwood city, and check it out. we have our vessel here in town for ocean cleanup, 52 santa rosa is our

return starliner. it was great to have a successful undocked deorbit and landing of the vehicle. we're really excited to have calypso back on the ground. >> starliner's original crew of butch wilmore and suni williams prepped the capsule for its return. they remain, though, at the international space station. the two astronauts are scheduled to return back to earth in early 2025, and they will be picked up by a space-x vessel. new developments now, students at apalachee high school in georgia will not return to school tuesday, when other schools in the county return to class. that's where a gunman shot and killed two students and two teachers earlier this week. the teenager accused of the shooting and his father made their first appearances in court yesterday. here's abc news reporter faith abubey. >> reporter this morning, a stunning moment in a georgia courtroom. father and son appearing back to back, both charged in connection with the

shooting that killed two students and two beloved teachers at apalachee high school. >> good morning, sir. are you mr. colt gray? yes, sir. >> colt gray, the 14 year old sitting just feet away from the families of his alleged victims. >> you're charged with four counts of felony murder. >> moments later, his father, 54 year old colin gray, brought in shackled, rocking back and forth. a judge charging him with multiple felonies, second degree murder and involuntary manslaughter among them. investigators say gray knowingly allowed his underage son to have a gun, and sources tell abc news he gave the teenager the assault style rifle used in the shooting as a christmas gift. >> i can see the elements that prosecutors are trying to put together to find liability that if you miss red flags that can land you, the parents in jail. >> it's now the second case in the u.s. where a parent has been charged with involuntary manslaughter after their child was accused of carrying out a deadly school shooting. karen

mcdonald prosecuted the historic cases against jennifer and james crumbley, who were both convicted after their son killed four of his fellow students at his oxford, michigan, high school in 2021. >> i think instead of focusing on whether we should be charging parents, i think our focus really needs to be on the eliminating the need for it. >> ashley goza is a senior at apalachee high school. she says she watched a gunman bang on her classroom door. >> i can hear the gunshots plain as day, i mean, every time i'll try to sleep at night, i can see miss amy or, you know, coach aspinwall or just hear the sounds or the cops yelling at him. yeah, it'll be a while before i can get over that. >> her mother, bridget, says she wants accountability again. >> he is 14 years old, so, yes, his parents just like the ones in michigan. they were charged because they knew.

>> and emma angulo, the mother of 14 year old cristian angulo, devastated after her son was shot and killed speaking out. he didn't deserve this. he didn't deserve to die like this, she says, adding, i miss him. i wish this was just a dream. faith abubey, abc news. >> the judge and former president donald trump's criminal hush money case delayed his sentencing on friday. abc news reporter derrick dennis tells us when trump could face potential consequences. >> the judge in donald trump's hush money trial giving a big break to the former president friday by agreeing to delay his sentencing until after the election. trump was convicted in may of 34 counts of falsifying business records to cover up a hush money payment to star stormy daniels. he was set to be sentenced on september 18th. judge juan merchan, now moving the hearing to november 26th to avoid any appearance, however

cdc has confirmed a human case of the bird flu in missouri. according to the cdc report, the patient had underlying medical conditions but has recovered and been sent home from the hospital. currently, there are no known animal exposures or transmission among the patient's close contacts. this is the 14th case of bird flu in the u.s. so far this year. it is the first case with no exposure to a sick animal or occupational risk. closer to home now we're taking a live look from our exploratorium camera, and you'll see there two ships have finally returned to the san francisco bay after years of researching how to fix an environmental crisis in the pacific ocean. now the ocean cleanup sent out those two boats to research the great pacific garbage patch six years ago. it's a company focused on building new technology to clean up the world's oceans. the great

pacific garbage patch is a giant collection of trash and debris floating around the ocean. finding a solution for a massive amount of waste is challenging by itself, but the ocean environment adds extra obstacles. >> you have big waves and you have a harsh environment. and to build something that actually surviving out there while at the same time only make sure you catch plastic and not marine life. that was quite a challenge. >> the company says it has a solution, but it needs between 4 and $7.5 billion to make it happen. the tech includes netting, cameras and computers powered by ai. once trash is pulled and sorted, the company recycles it into new products. port of san francisco engineers have determined pier 54 is structurally unsound. according to sfgate, the crumbling pier near the chase center will be closed down by the end of the year. the 11 businesses on it must shutter or relocate by then. float guys is one of those

businesses making parade floats for the city's big events. the pier will soon sit unoccupied until the port finds the funds to remove it on the peninsula near half moon bay. now, crowds of people caught a rare glimpse of a humpback whale very neat. it was swimming around pillar point harbor right off the san mateo county coast. sky seven, as you see here, was overhead and had a very clear view of this humpback. the marine mammal center says the whale is healthy, and experts say it's most likely took a wrong turn with an abundance of food in this particular area. whale watchers have been enjoying the spectacle. >> i've been here 20 years. i haven't seen a whale inside the harbor, so it is quite a surprise. i know there are a lot of anchovies out here, and there's been a lot of whales over pacifica, but not here because of the way the bay is. >> experts are hoping the whale will find its way back into the

seven 2856 san francisco 59. in oakland it's in the mid 60s in san jose where that fog is scattering out and you can see the marine layer getting denser, closer to the ground before it evaporates. 52 santa rosa, 56, in petaluma, with 64 by the delta that southwest wind bringing in some of that cooler air and once again salesforce is buried. so the marine layer has been fluctuating from about 1000ft to about 800ft, right here. the cooling begins today, and we're going to stay pretty much status quo through your sunday. the marine layer expands. we have some patchy mist and drizzle at the coast and then into next week we get even cooler, particularly tuesday. that will be the coolest day of the workweek. so as we look at the low cloud deck, it clears. these are some high clouds there in the north bay. 1:00 it is mostly sunny and then the fog pulls back for parts of stinson beach, even san francisco, and then it moves back in through the overnight hours. it's not going to last, though. once again, we're into a
