♪ there were literally hundreds of spot fires coming off of this. that was just kind of that perfect storm from a spark to devastation in a matter of hours. >> firefighters are getting the upper hand on a fast moving wildfire that started in a terrible spot. good evening and thank you for joining us i'm dion limb. some evacuations are lifted tonight after the boyles fires. explosive flames spread through the city of clearlake in lake county. that fire started at about 215 today, burning in the southern end of town. and by 4:00, firefighters said 30 buildings were burned. crews

faced spot fires on nearly every block as they help neighbors race to evacuate. >> every time you turn around, there is a new spot fire and there's not a straight line to get from point a to point b, so it was a challenge just to get those people evacuated and try to do the fire stop. once you get a chance to drive through there, you're going to look at the tremendous amount of structure saved. >> tonight, that fire is no longer spreading fast, but those buildings are still smoldering as fire crews work to figure out just how many of them are homes. abc seven news reporter tara campbell is in clear lake, with details on the damage and the families who lost everything. reporter. >> yeah, dion. the town of clear lake clearly shaken up this evening. the boyles fire breaking out this afternoon, forcing the evacuation of more than 4000 residents. the fire scorching roughly 90 acres. crews attacking the flames by ground and air burning dangerously close to homes. a hospital and shopping center. dozens of vehicles lost and some losing homes, others with close

calls. >> the fire is coming to very close at 100ft, two feet. and then i say, i think it's time to go, not need to wait because the fires started all the way to there. when i saw it to here, i think it's very close. >> was your home destroyed? >> i hope yeah, everything is destroyed. we saw the big smoke and explosion, you know, like uh- the houses that are burning. and then, we started scared. so we started to get whatever we get, like papers, whatever we need a very important things. and then we pulled the cars out and get ready to go in case we had to. >> now we're told crews are making good progress, but the push to get this fire under control continues. and we can also report so far there are no known injuries to fire crews or residents. so hopefully everyone is safe tonight in clear lake. tara campbell abc seven news. >> firefighters are still tending to burning buildings tonight, but it is nowhere near

the chaos of the first hours of this fire. abc seven news reporter j.r stone shows us the frightening views captured by neighbors as the boyles fire spread an apocalyptic fire scene in clear lake. >> as this huge plume of smoke rose into the sky, dawn hunt took this video driving into lower lake and said the situation just looked worse and worse as the day progressed. >> when i'm heading in, if you take a right up into the walmart parking lot. i just glanced in that direction. the flames were huge, huge flames. >> one viewer took this picture showing the smoke and flames just beyond the clear lake mcdonald's. this picture was taken behind the nearby hospital. sadly, many structures burned. tracy long took this video with her husband as they were headed back home to clear lake. >> when i got the video, i remember thinking that there was no way our house was going to survive the enormity of what we were looking at. >> fortunately for them, their

home was 15 to 20 blocks from flames and is still standing in that video though if you look closely, you can see the flames just shooting up into the air. tracy described not only the sight of this, but the sounds. >> you could actually hear the propane tanks exploding as we drove through lower lake, and when we got home, i went out front and i asked my husband, did you hear something explode? and he said, no, but it's probably the propane tanks. and when i came back in, you could hear they sound like bombs going off. >> fire crews could be seen battling the flames from above, dropping water and fire retardant on hotspots. sadly, a number of homes were destroyed. >> you could just see houses just turning black. one after another. yeah, it was terrible. it was absolutely terrible. just by the color of the smoke. you know what it is? it's horrible. so sad. >> a lot of prayer went out today, you know, not just for our house, but our prayers are always with the firefighters

that they, you know, that they're able to put the fire out and that they get to go home to their families. >> j.r. >> stone, abc seven news. >> all right. let's bring in abc seven news meteorologist frances dinglasan with a look at the conditions fueling this blaze. frances hopefully the conditions improving for tomorrow. >> well, they have improved right now. in fact, temperatures have gone down. relative humidity has gone up in the last few hours. and here's a look at those conditions. so it's currently 63 degrees. relative humidity is 46%. and the winds have also died down. they're only at about one mile per hour. gusts up to three miles per hour wind will be the most important factor for beating this fire. and they will remain fairly light and calm during the overnight hours. less than 2 to 3mph until about 6:00. this morning. it does pick up in the afternoon, so the breezes will come up to close to 20mph around 3:00 before it dies down in the evening. now, as we look, take a look at temperatures throughout

the next few days. they will come down and that, you would think, means good news. but they are coming down because the winds will actually be stronger with the sea breeze. on tuesday and wednesday. so that's a bit more fire danger in beating this fire. and then they come back up. we'll keep you posted on the latest conditions dion. >> all right. sounds good frances. thank you. well meantime we are tracking some breaking news coming out of san jose tonight after an officer shot a person they say shot someone outside a 7-eleven. the suspect and one victim are both in the hospital with life threatening injuries. san jose police say they got multiple calls about a shooting near the business on center road just before 930. when officers showed up, they say the shooter was still armed and they shot the suspect. there is, from what we understand, still a very large police presence in the area as officers investigate. san francisco police are investigating a double shooting in the tenderloin this afternoo.

officers responded to willow street in alleyway off of polk just after 4:00, where they found two people and a dog with gunshot wounds. the officers provided medical aid until an ambulance arrived. the victims were taken to the hospital, but police have not said how they are doing tonight. no arrests have been made. the road reopened just before nine tonight. well, time now for our abc seven news at 11, where we help you get ahead on the big headlines in the week to come. first up, the countdown to the presidential debate. that's happening tuesday night right here on abc seven. vice president kamala harris spent the weekend with her closest advisers preparing for the face off former president donald trump held a rally in wisconsin where he claimed his debate performance won't get a fair review. >> you know, if i destroy her in the debate, they'll say trump suffered a humiliating defeat tonight, more prominent republicans are throwing their support behind harris.

tourist sideshows ended with one person this time run over. a car drove into a group of people during a sideshow overnight in oakland. this happened at the intersection of hegenberger and edgewater. we stopped the video just a second before that car hit the spectators. a female was run over as the car left the scene. some in that crowd rushed to help. and another sideshow took over the bay bridge. check this out. the chp says at about 330 this morning, at least 100

cars blocked all the westbound lanes. this sideshow lasted about 20 minutes. one vehicle struck the crowd here as well. no arrests have been made. to the skies where a southwest flight headed to sfo was diverted to a southern california airport after crew members say they smelled smoke in the cabin. that flight originated in phoenix and made the emergency landing at ontario international airport in san bernardino county yesterday. a southwest spokesperson said they inspected the plane a boeing max eight, and didn't find anything unusual. passengers boarded another plane and landed in san francisco last night. happening tomorrow, kaiser permanente will begin rolling out the very latest version of the covid vaccine. the shots will be available to anyone five and older, and you can make an appointment ahead of time or simply walk into a clinic. kaiser says covid vaccines for kids six months to four years old will become available in mid-september. now to make an appointment at kaiser or to find

the bay and santa rosa and petaluma, we're dropping into the mid and upper 50s. napa 63. but check it out. fairfield, concord still at 70 degrees and livermore at 69. and this time from sutro. we're looking out towards san francisco. and what you can expect is overnight, we'll see some more areas of fog, even some drizzle. tomorrow it's going to be sunny once again in the afternoon. temperatures will be mild at the coast, but then warm inland and then tuesday through midweek get ready. it's going to be breezy and much cooler, so that's some relief for inland areas where they'll finally get out of the 90s. so here's a futurecast animation. what you'll notice is lots of cloud cover. the areas of green show the possible drizzle and then you'll notice tomorrow afternoon plenty of sunshine once again, except all along the beaches. now we'll see the marine layer deepen and push in farther on tuesday morning. you can see it's more widesprea, and this deeper marine layer will mean cooler temperatures starting on tuesday. overnight lows generally in the 50s. san

francisco 55, san jose 61. and it is a bit cooler though in the north bay, like santa rosa and napa in the low 50s. so here we see some more pockets of drizzle there possible there through the north bay coast. and also tomorrow look for temperatures to be similar to today's, but just a touch cooler. for example, san francisco today had a high of 60, tomorrow 70, tomorrow 68. and then we saw some mid 90s inland. and then tomorrow we'll see some low 90s through concord, livermore, oakland 74. just perfect there. san jose will still be comfortable at 85 degrees and look for lots of mid 80s right around 84 for santa rosa, san rafael and napa with plenty of sunshine in the afternoon. now we're going to jump ahead to tuesday because you notice our temperatures drop suddenly for inland areas will only see the low, maybe some mid 80s on tuesday. but concord, danville 81 degrees. notice along the beaches though it kind of stays the same still in the 60s. but around the bay we'll see more

70s like oakland 71, san jose 79 degrees. and the reason for that is that on the increased onshore flow. so the wind gusts will pick up tuesday afternoon and they'll even be stronger on wednesday, bringing cooler air through all the inland areas. so here's a look at some of those average temperatures in livermore. notice a sudden drop by about 13 degrees on tuesday for livermore. so they'll be above average tomorrow then well below average by tuesday. and you'll see that here with the accuweather seven day forecast. so still mild to warm with the afternoon sunshine. temperatures tumble on tuesday again for inland areas and around the bay at the beaches will kind of be needing that long sleeve shirt basically all week long that that hasn't changed. >> i'll keep it handy. off to the side, dressing in layers. okay? okay. francis. thanks. well, neighbors in the north bay, they are soaking up the sight of this. a divisive new art installation. stay with us.

evacuation in lake county today, and about 90 acres have burned, so far. clear lake hospital lost power and is now running on a generator. firefighters dealt with 500 foot flame lengths and embers starting too many fires to handle. they figured out where the fire started, but not how. clear lake. animal control says crews are out searching the fire area for pets who are left behind. they say you can leave them a message if you need their help with a missing animal. and we're also tracking the fire that line fire scorching more than 20,000 acres in southern california. evacuations expanded today in san bernardino county. that's where reporter tim caputo with our sister station in los angeles, is. with that fire showing no signs of slowing down edges of the line, fire creeping over a ridge not far from the small town of mountain home village, where the entire community of about 150 people were evacuated this evening. >> just trying to stay mindful of things going on, you know,

the cause. afternoon thunderstorms brought wind and lightning on top of this seemingly never ending heat wave. frustrating for the 1800 plus fire crews trying to secure control lines and an ominous feel for everyone else. >> it's almost like the world is ending. it looks like that. it smells like that. >> schools in the area will be closed on monday, partially because of all the evacuations in the area and also because of the poor air quality here in san bernardino county. tim caputo, abc seven news. >> terrifying moments on interstate 75 in kentucky. police are trying to understand the motive after someone shot five people in cars yesterday. they've ruled out road rage. one mother shares these photos after her car was shot with her husband and four year old son inside. authorities say no one died, but some injuries were very severe. they found an ar 15 in a wooded area nearby. they believe to be connected to the shooting. the suspect is still on the loose with crews searching a remote area near his abandoned vehicle. a police

officer involved in this morning's arrest of miami dolphins star tyreek hill has been placed on administrative leave. the wide receiver was handcuffed during a traffic stop just hours before kickoff. cell phone video shows hill face down on the ground in handcuffs near the dolphin stadium, sources told our sister network, espn. he was pulled over for speeding and got into a verbal altercation with an officer. but this is what hill had to say about that. after the game. >> i wasn't disrespectful, you know, because my mom didn't raise me that way, didn't cuss, didn't do none of that. >> hill was released and even went on to play in the game, scoring a touchdown. another dolphins player, defensive tackle calais campbell, told reporters he was also handcuffed when he tried to deescalate the situation. miami-dade police say they're investigating a possible way to tackle the housing crisis. one layer at a time.
