>> from abc news. this is america this morning. >> good monday morning, everyone. i'm rhiannon ally. >> and i'm andrew dymburt. we begin with the presidential race and the countdown to tomorrow night's big debate. >> a new poll has some revealing details about the state of the race, including where former president trump has the edge over vice president harris. >> also this morning, a new report on what went wrong during the u.s. withdrawal from afghanistan in 2021. a key foreign policy issue in this campaign, abc's christiane cordero has the very latest from the campaign trail. christiane good morning. >> andrew, good morning to you. on the eve of the first debate between harris and trump, the race is neck and neck, with former president trump holding the edge on several key issues. vice president harris paused her debate prep over the weekend, visiting a spice shop in pittsburgh, where she appeared to preview one of her debate attack lines. it's time to turn the page on the divisiveness. >> it's time to bring our

country together to chart a new way forward. >> harris's team has held mock debates with full tv lighting. >> are you ready, madam vice president? >> i'm ready. trump is not participating in mock debates, instead holding informal policy sessions with advisers. >> we're run by stupid people. stupid, stupid people. and we found that out at the debate with joe. how did that work out? and we're going to find it out again on tuesday night. >> on his social media website, trump threatened to legally target people he accuses of fraud related to his 2020 election loss. trump writing when i win, those people that cheated will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, which will include long term prison sentences so that this depravity of justice does not happen again. a new poll shows a tight race trump at 48% among likely voters. harris at 47%, well within the margin of error. but trump's approval rating is higher than during his previous two campaigns, and the poll

shows likely voters view trump as closer to the political center than harris. 47% say harris is too liberal, but only 32% say trump is too conservative. meanwhile, house republicans overnight released results of their investigation into the biden administration's withdrawal from afghanistan in 20 2113. u.s. service members were killed in the chaos. the report accuses the biden administration of misleading the public about the withdrawal, and says white house officials did not listen to military generals. the biden administration describes the investigation as a partizan cherry picking of the facts. congressman michael mccaul, chairman of the investigative committee, was asked about the timing. >> it's taken me two years to get to this point because of the obstruction. i've had to serve subpoena after subpoena moved to compel, threatened to, you know, hold the secretary in contempt to get information like after action reports all these documents, testimonies that we finally got to.

>> democrats claim biden's options were limited because it was the trump administration that had previously negotiated the withdrawal timeline with the taliban. the investigation found vice president harris played no role in planning the afghanistan withdrawal, although she expressed public support for president biden's decision at the time. andrew. christiane. >> thank you. the abc news debate is tomorrow night, 8:00 eastern here on abc and our streaming platforms. >> now we head to kentucky, where the manhunt resumes this morning for a suspect accused of opening fire on a busy highway. five people were wounded on interstate 75 with bullets hitting 12 vehicles. authorities are now looking for 32 year old joseph couch after finding his suv and an ar 15 rifle nearby. they say he purchased the weapon legally on saturday, just hours before the shooting, along with 1000 rounds of ammunition. and then fired from the ledge of a cliff. >> we do have solid evidence, as the sheriff said his vehicle was at the scene. a firearm that he purchased yesterday was at the scene. we have interviewed

people. we feel pretty confident that this is the individual. >> so they are searching everywhere. they include underground caves in that area. local schools are closed today. no word on the suspect's motive, but officials say he previously faced a misdemeanor charge in connection with a family dispute. >> now to california and powerful new images of multiple wildfires forcing thousands of people to flee their homes. this morning, new video of the conditions firefighters face in california, where record heat is fueling several wildfires. the fire north of the bay area has burned at least 30 buildings and forced 4000 people to evacuate the city of clearlake. in southern california. firefighters briefly ran from flames as explosions erupted from this fire in l.a. county. the area's largest wildfire, the lion fire, has burned 17,000 acres in san bernardino county, exploding in size, growing 14 times bigger in just over one day. >> do you know if your home is okay? >> no, i can't get up there. >> 35,000 homes and businesses

vigil to remember the four lives lost during last week's shooting at apalachee high school. >> this is home. >> in attendance. parents like brian jones, still shaken after getting a message from his daughter during school last wednesday. >> text was daddy, there's a shooter, an actual shooter. i smell the gunpowder. i'm in the bathroom. >> she survived, but two classmates and two teachers did not. authorities now revealing the suspected shooter, 14 year old colt gray, had registered at the school just two weeks earlier. >> he didn't even attend class. he had gone to get some help and left. and just so he really wasn't a had been a full time student yet. >> the suspect's aunt says his mother had called a school counselor the morning of the shooting to warn them about an extreme emergency. the washington post first to report that the suspect's mother texted her sister, saying she had told

the school counselor to go immediately and find her son to check on him. according to the suspect's aunt, the call was made nearly half an hour before the shooting. classmate leila sarath says that morning there seemed to be confusion involving school officials and another student who has a name similar to the suspect's. >> they asked for his bag, and then they took his bag. and then a little bit later, he came back in with his bag and, everyone was like, it was just normal. like they said that he said that they weren't looking for him. they were looking for colt. >> the suspect's aunt previously told abc news colt had been, quote, begging for months for help with his mental health. family members describing his troubled home life. school officials declined to comment on the aunt's allegations that they were warned. the sheriff says they're investigating any phone calls to the school. neither the suspect nor his father, who also
