3:00 pm
news. >> breaking news james earl jones, the pioneering actor of stage and screen who lent his amazing baritone voice to darth vader, mufasa and the cnn network, has died at the age of 93. his remarkable voice is just one of the many things the world
3:01 pm
will miss about the beloved actor, who died monday, according to his agent. jones had a distinguished career that spanned some 60 years and took him from a small town theater in northern michigan to the highest reaches of hollywood, where he appeared in dozens of movies and tv shows. jones was with his family when he passed away. no cause of death was shared, but once again, he was 93 years old. with that, thanks for joining us. good afternoon. i'm kristen sze we're going to shift gears because we are counting down to monday night football on abc seven. the 40 niners are kicking off the new season at home against aaron rodgers and the new york jets. as you can see from the countdown clock right there, you know, losing the super bowl ensures a team of one thing. you cannot wait to get back on the field again, to try again, to achieve what just barely eluded you the last time. and that's what the 40 niners will be doing tonight. opening its season at home on monday night football here on abc seven. and here to talk about the niners. what they'll face as
3:02 pm
they begin their big championship quest is ta da abc seven news sports director larry beil. >> let's go. >> i know we're ready. the question is, is the team ready? how are we looking? >> i think i think the team is going to be fine. i mean, what i wonder about first of all is christian mccaffrey, because last week we heard he had a calf injury. then that changed to a calf slash achilles tendon injury. this immediately brings back flashbacks of kevin durant with the warriors when he had a calf injury that turned into a torn achilles. so i'm hoping one that christian is healthy and two, that he's not under such a big workload that there's danger to re-injury. >> does he have to be like, does brock purdy have other weapons? you know, based on who we signed, what we got, how healthy everybody is. >> the niners have a ton of weapons on offense. okay, so not only mccaffrey but you got george kittle. you have brandon aiyuk who of course had the hold in trent williams had to hold
3:03 pm
out. you have deebo samuel. they they have a lot of good options in terms of how to get the ball moving up and down the field, but still mccaffrey it all starts with mccaffrey. and if he's not healthy or he's compromised in some way he's the type of guy he'll want to run through a wall. no matter what injury you tell him he has. there are times where i mean that's just how he is. it's how he was at stanford. he's not a big dude. he's probably like, you know, five, ten or something like that. but he's super strong and he runs with aggression. okay. >> how ready are the guys? i mean, this is the first game of the season. yeah. >> oh they're ready. i mean, if they're not ready now, it's not a lot of, you know, warm ups for them during preseason. >> well, that is the challenge because, you know, we saw yesterday all the games if you were watching at home play was pretty ragged. >> and the reason for that is that the starters typically don't play much in the preseason. teams fear injury. you don't want to get your guys hurt in a meaningless game. so then the first couple of games really are kind of like an
3:04 pm
extension of the preseason, post preseason. >> it's post preseason. >> yes. it's exactly that's a good way to phrase it. okay. >> yeah. all right. so of course, a lot of rides on brock purdy, who is one of the captains this year. and i understand that chris alvarez is out there at levi's stadium with a great story on him. is that right? >> yeah, that that's that's what the word on the street is, let's let's see if we can bring chris in right now. first of all, this is the first time chris has been on television in over a month. >> we should congratulate him once again. >> congratulations on a beautiful baby girl. and when was the last time you slept? >> you slept? i know, four weeks ago, when she was born. >> and. ta da, ta da! i'm back. i don't have a diaper in my hand for the first time in about five hours. it's the longest streak i've had since a little baby priscilla was born, and i'm great grateful to be back here at levi's stadium and see a lot of the guys walking in george kittle. so far, my favorite outfit of the day, a little caesars just decked out. check my twitter. he's obviously sponsored by little caesars. pizza, pizza. he is ready to go. and this is going to be a lot of fun. brock purdy he talked about
3:05 pm
him. he's entering his third season now. he is the guy we already knew. he was the guy last year. obviously he entered injured a little bit into camp and was kind of working through some stuff. took the niners all the way to the super bowl. we all remember how that ended in las vegas, but now a whole new season. they hope to get back to new orleans at the end of the year. but the first step right here on monday night. and brock purdy spoke with former 40 niners quarterback and espn analyst alex smith earlier this week as they got ready for the jets. >> all right. you get to start off the season here at home monday night football. i'm sure you were a kid watching monday night games. what's that mean to you? >> yeah man. just the you know, start off the season on like a prime time game. and, the fall, it's coming around the corner. weather starts getting colder. like all those kinds of things. and you just get so excited for it. but to be on monday night football against a great team in the jets and obviously we're trying to pick up where we left off last year and have that chip on our shoulders. so it doesn't get any better than that. we're excited for it. >> all right. the guy on the other sideline i know you're not
3:06 pm
going against him, but one of the best to ever do it. i'm sure a guy you watched growing up anything extra? they're going up against aaron. >> i mean he's a great quarterback man and hall of famer. and so i mean it's pretty cool to be able to share the same field and compete against each other, but yeah, like you said, it i got to compete against the jets defense. he's got to compete against our defense. and you know, obviously want to be smart with the ball and do what i can to move the ball and put up points for us. but, you know it's good to know that, you know, they have a really good quarterback and anything can happen. so how can we, you know, sort of take advantage of the possessions that we have and, and make the most of it when the ball is in my hands. so it's football man. it's compete. >> and the 40 niners get to go. 515 is the kickoff. aaron rodgers and the jets will remember what happened to him last year. injured on the fourth play of the game. so aaron rodgers nearly a year later. be nice to see him on the field. obviously he's went to cal. we all know his story. but the niners had to keep him under control. be interesting to see
3:07 pm
how he plays with his jets teammates. because he didn't play all of last year as he rehabbed from that achilles injury, guys. and, just a lot of fun getting ready for football. we are back and ta da! it's going to be back on tv. i kind of remember how to do it. it's like training wheels, i guess. >> all right. just remember the bouncing move really works with babies, okay? the bounce. chris, the bounce. >> yes, absolutely. yeah >> we've talked a lot about the bounce and the car ride and the stroller and all that stuff. >> all right, chris, thank you so much. and larry, thank you. as well. of course. we'll see you at 4:00. in the meantime, folks, you know, it's all happening here on abc seven. we've got your ticket to the game. so you want to catch every moment of monday night football right here on abc seven. you can see the countdown clock shows an hour and 52 minutes before our coverage begins at 5:00. all right. for now, we'll move on to other news, developing news, a fire that burned dozens of homes in lake county over the weekend is now 40% contained. cal fire just released an update in the last half hour, saying forward progress in the boyles fire has been stopped. so that's just in. and good news, it burned more than 30 buildings in at least 40
3:08 pm
vehicles across the southern end of town after it started yesterday afternoon. at one point, crews faced spot fires on nearly every block as they helped neighbors race to evacuate. >> every time you turn around, there is a new spot fire and there's not a straight line to get from point a to point b, so it was a challenge just to get those people evacuated and try to do the fire stop. once you get a chance to drive through there, you're going to look at the tremendous amount of structures saved. >> at least 80 personnel remain on the scene with embers still a concern. evacuations remain in place. >> fillled is coming to a very close. 100ft, two feet. and then i say, i think it's time to go, not need to wait because the fires started all the way to there. when i saw it to here, i think it's very close. >> was your home destroyed, i hope? >> yeah. everything is destroye. >> really sorry for him, but thankfully there have been no injuries reported. and in nevad, governor joe lombardo is declaring a state of emergency for the davis fire. it's burning
3:09 pm
out of control just north of reno, destroying 14 buildings. about 6500 acres have burned in the area of davis creek regional park. there, power outages in the south reno area and up to 14,000 people are under evacuation. there developing out of san jose, police shot and killed a suspected gunman outside a 7-eleven. this morning. san jose police say they got multiple calls about a shooting near the gas station on center road just before 930 last night. when officers got there, they encountered an armed man and shot him. he died at a hospital before police got there. they believe the man had shot another person. that person remains in the hospital in critical condition. to the accuweather forecast now it's warm today, but abc7 weather anchor spencer christian says we should expect temperatures to drop in the coming days. >> these are the forecast headlines. it will be a sunny afternoon for most of the bay area. mild to warm. middle of the week. starting tomorrow, breezy and much cooler temperatures will drop pretty sharply over the next 24 hours.
3:10 pm
highs in the low 90s inland today, low 80s tomorrow. fairfield a fairfield friday into sunday. i need sleep. it will be turning slightly warmer. okay, here we go. with the highs this afternoon over in the inland east bay, we'll be looking at highs of 91 at concord 92. antioch, livermore 93 up at fairfield 93 degrees as well. moving to the north bay. napa 8387 in santa rosa 84 at san rafael. the city san francisco will top out at 69 degrees right across the bay at oakland. look for a high of 74. in fact, most locations around the bay shoreline today will top out at about mid to upper 70s. then as you move southward, it gets warmer down in the south bay, a high of 85 at san jose, morgan hill, a high of 91. and on the coast we'll see mainly mid 60s today. now tonight we'll see clouds thicken again. we'll have a nice marine layer developing near the coast, perhaps some drizzle just offshore. a few high clouds will pass by as well. overnight lows will be generally in the mid to upper 50s. a little bit milder
3:11 pm
as you move farther inland to the east bay, where antioch will bottom out at about 60 degrees, which is relatively mild. overnight rating. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. once again tonight. don't forget 40 niners hosting the jets at levi's stadium. high today in the inland east bay and warmest spots will be in the mid 90s. but tomorrow notice how the temperatures tumble into low 80s inland and only highs of about 70 degrees around the bay shoreline will be windy as well. as we get into the middle of the week, temperatures will increase slightly, maybe two degrees per day, and start to taper off again going into the weekend. >> all right. he was one of the very few who predicted donald trump's victory in 2016. he's called the prophet of presidential elections and he's picked a winner between vice president kamala harris and trump just ahead of tomorrow's presidential debate. we'll talk live with pro
3:12 pm
3:13 pm
3:14 pm
harris and former president trump will take center stage in philadelphia. pennsylvania is a key battleground state this november, with the latest poll showing a very tight race there. abc news reporter perry russom is in philadelphia. >> final preparations ahead of the high stakes debate between former president trump and vice president kamala harris. there will be no opening statements, no studio audience, no pre-written notes or huddling with staff during commercial breaks. microphones will be muted when it's not the candidate's turn to speak. >> are you ready, madam vice president? ready? >> harris has been getting ready in pittsburgh with mock debates. former hillary clinton adviser philippe reines playing the role of trump. reines posting this video on x from 2016, where he helped clinton prepare for trump.
3:15 pm
>> the vice president will will defeat donald trump in the debate tomorrow. >> trump has been meeting with policy advisers, including congressman matt gaetz, who's been helping with possible controversial questions, including trump's legal issues and his stance on abortion rights. >> is anybody going to be watching trump with a weekend rally in wisconsin? to every citizen who's sick and tired of the parasitic political class in washington. november 5th will be your liberation day. the latest fivethirtyeight polling average shows a tight race, with harris up by less than three percentage points nationwide. >> right now, harris leading in five of the seven big battlegrounds. but it's a tight race in all of them, including right here in pennsylvania. the 90 minute debate is happening here at the national constitution center in philadelphia behind me. >> with harris arriving today, trump will be here tomorrow setting up a key moment in this race where they talk about the issues and how they want this country to move forward. perry russom, abc news, philadelphia. >> all right. the 538 poll aside, there is a newer new york
3:16 pm
times siena college poll that finds trump regaining some of the ground he lost to harris. he now leads her 48 to 47% among likely voters. but while most indicators polls and forecasters suggest this race is too close to call, one professor who's unique prediction method has gotten him right. nine out of the last ten elections is ready to call it, and knows who he's putting his money on. joining us live now to talk about his pick and why. american university history professor who the new york times calls the prophet of presidential elections. allan lichtman. professor lichtman, thanks so much. sorry to embarrass you. my pleasure. okay look. >> what does a little embarrassed by all these titles, but that's okay. yeah. >> that's okay, that's okay. so who does your model say will win this time? trump or harris? >> yeah. my model says we are going to have a path breaking new american president that kamala harris will become the first woman president of the united states at least putting a big crack in the glass ceiling,
3:17 pm
if not shattering it. and moreover, she will become the first president of combined african and east asian descent. kind of a reflection of how america is rapidly becoming a majority minority country. all right. >> before we dive into how exactly you got to that conclusion, i just want to point out to our viewers who maybe don't follow politics so much and didn't know, but you were one of the few to predict that trump would beat hillary clinton in 2016. for months before the election, clinton had double digit leads in polls. everyone, including obama, was so sure that he kind of led the whole republicans blocking his supreme court appointment go thinking hillary would finish the job. so how does your model differ from most? what is it that you weigh so differently that allowed you to make that pick and others missed it? >> and by the way, i did get a letter of congratulations from donald trump after i made that pick, but it did not make me very popular in 90% plus democratic d.c, where i teach at american university. here's the secret i ignore the pundits.
3:18 pm
they're buddies of mine, but they have no scientific basis for their opinions. and they have no track record. i ignore the polls, which are snapshots and abused by compilers of the polls, like nate silver, who is so wrong in 2016 and is now absurdly predicting a trump landslide, even though, as you point out, harris is ahead in most of the swing states. so what do i look at? i look at the fundamentals of how elections really work as votes up or down on the strength and performance of the white house party and my system, the keys to the white house gauges that, and the way it works. if six or more of the keys go against the white house party, they're predicted lose, they're predicted winners. and i've been right since i predicted ronald reagan's reelection in april 1982, nearly three years ahead of time when
3:19 pm
america was in the midst of the worst recession to date since the great depression. and 60% of americans thought reagan was too old to win. and by the way, i would contend i was right about 2000. the wrong man was elected president. as i proved in my report to the united states commission on civil rights and was verified independently by a later study by professor walter mcbain of cornell university, who proved that based on the intent of voters, gore should have won by ten. >> you're speaking of bush versus gore. i'm not going to relitigate 2000. not let's let's not. i think a lot of people want to forget about that. but let's talk about you have the 13 keys to the white house, right? and it all based on the incumbent party, whether americans go, yay incumbents or boo. so let's throw out five of them. and i kind of combine them just to have them all fit, you know? but you have candidates charisma, right? both incumbent and the challenger. you have short and long term economy party mandates, social unrest, scandal. you've got a few more.
3:20 pm
but tell me, does does kamala harris meet most of these? is that what's happened here? and explain how trump and kamala harris fall into these? >> he meets most, but not all, but a majority. she doesn't meet the charisma key, which is very carefully defined. all my keys are carefully defined. they're not random subjective measures. you have to be a once in a generation inspirational across the board transformational candidate like franklin roosevelt or ronald reagan. >> trump is trump authentic? >> pardon me, is trump charismatic? >> does he win on that one? >> he does not fit that definition either. no matter what you may think of him, he only appeals to a narrow base. but to win that key, you have to be broadly inspirational. in four years, his approval rating as president was 41%. his narrow base, one of the lowest in all of history. he lost the popular
3:21 pm
vote in elections only because we have about a minute left. >> like, i want to throw up the keys again because, i mean, on, you know, short term economy, i feel like a lot of people may not be so happy right now. right. and let me answer that. >> it's not based on people's feelings. that's another way you make errors. it's quantitative. it asks whether the economy is not in recession. in the election year, the national bureau of economic research not me, examines that there's no recession, no recession on the horizon. and the long term economy. he is equally quantitative. it looks at real per capita growth during the term, compares it to the average of the previous two terms, and growth under biden is much greater. look at the objective indicators. >> got it. okay, so harris gets nine out of your 13 keys. correct >> uh. >> that's correct. okay. all right. real quick. >> the other way is down four
3:22 pm
keys. it takes six keys to count her out. so she has a two key cushion, even swing, the administration a success in ukraine. even if ukraine went south, it would still be five keys. one key short. >> all right, look, we could do a whole show on this. and if you're willing, we'd love to have you back to on talk more about what could change your prediction still in the next couple of months, maybe again after the election, the debate that is not after the election, because by then we'll all be able to predict. all right. thank you so very much. >> alan, can i say one more thing real fast? okay follow my live show tuesdays and thursdays at 9 p.m. eastern at allan lichtman youtube. >> all right. thanks a lot.
