been clear lake. as firefighters work to control the boyles fire, it's already burned 76 acres. more than 30 buildings and at least 40 vehicles across the southern end of town since it started yesterday afternoon. right now, the fire is 40% contained. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard spoke with neighbors in clear lake who escaped the fire but lost everything in less than an hour. >> it was a life changing moment. like my home. just like, fell apart and like an hour. >> esperanza hagy is thankful her family is safe after the boyles fire roared through their clear lake neighborhood sunday afternoon. the family was heading home from church when they spotted the flames shooting hundreds of feet in the air. >> but like, the fire was too close. so i was. i was like panicking. >> 4000 residents told to leave their homes as the fire grew larger, too dangerous for the gaze to return home. hours later, they learned their home was gone.

>> for the past 25 years, my parents have lived there and just lost everything. they just have the clothes that they left with. but you know, everything else is gone. >> the family sharing this photo of their home before the fire. firefighters say 30 homes were lost here about 40 to 60 vehicles destroyed. >> loss of property is substantial, especially for a 76 acre fire. >> the fire started several hundred feet in that direction. and then raced up this hillside, carried by strong winds and into the neighborhood. >> and when i was around fast, we try to stay to fight it with hoses and stuff, but it was too much. >> so we had to leave and get out of there and then come to find out, we come back. it's just all burnt to the ground. so sad. >> building inspectors are going door to door assessing damage and redtagged homes. >> it's pretty dramatic in a small area. it's kind of heartbreaking because some of these folks are limited income and elderly, and it's going to

involving police and a man with a gun. today, police talked about the incident, describing how officers tried to deescalate the situation. >> abc seven news reporter lena howland has more. >> reports of an active shooter in the area of 711. the call is at 4278 center road. >> a sidewalk covered in glass. after san jose police shot a man they say had been shooting into the air randomly, both inside and outside of a restaurant sunday night, injuring one man and blowing out a nearby 711 front windows. >> i got scared myself because when he was shooting, it was so you know, so strong that we had to cover our ears. >> by the time police arrived on scene, acting san jose police chief paul joseph says he still had a gun in his hand. >> the suspect was still armed with his stolen 45 caliber

semiautomatic handgun that he was raising above his head. officers attempted to de-escalate the situation, giving the suspect commands to drop his weapon, but the suspect did not comply. >> joseph says the suspect then pointed his gun at officers, causing four officers to shoot him. each of those officers has at least three years of experience. the suspect was taken to the hospital where he later died. jose rodriguez was helping out at the restaurant when the shooting happened. i heard when they asked him, drop the gun and that's it, because i was back there in the restaurant with the girls, the waiters and the cook to try to make them calm down. he says while he didn't personally know the suspect, the man was a regular at the shopping center. chief joseph says he had been drinking at the restaurant earlier that day. >> we are learning that the suspect had estranged himself from his family. he was drinking heavily and had made comments regarding suicidal ideations. by all accounts, we believe the

suspect was determined to have an armed confrontation with police and unfortunately shot a bystander during his self-created melee. >> san jose mayor matt mehan saying he's grateful for the swift actions of officers that may have saved lives. >> i believe that the reason that this was not a much worse tragedy than it already is because our officers responded quickly and courageously and did what they needed to do to ensure the safety of others who were there. >> lena howland abc seven news. >> fairfield police have arrested a man who they say stabbed a stranger on an amtrak train last night. the 21 year old victim suffered stab wounds to his chest and was hospitalized in critical condition. police say another passenger was able to take the knife from the suspect and detained him until police got there. the 23 year old suspect is from sacramento and faces charges, including attempted murder. the motive remains unclear. police say the victim and suspect did not know each other.

>> a show of support today for an unhoused san francisco woman who is fighting a very serious illness and also fighting the city. the group faith in action bay area, held a rally this morning outside zuckerberg general hospital in support of carmen marquez. the group claims marquez contracted meningitis while in a city operated homeless shelter earlier this year. she had to have one of her legs and a number of fingers amputated. members of faith in action say the city rejected carmen's request for the appropriate support for her medical condition, asking for dignified housing, permanent housing, stable, comfortable housing that meets carmen's necessities needs. marquez joined the rally by phone from her hospital room. we reached out to the city for a response to these claims. the city officials released a statement. the city's health department, quote, responded immediately, and all individuals at the shelter were given antibiotics to prevent infection. no other

cases of meningitis have been reported at that location or any other shelter in san francisco. >> now to a story about confusion and frustration for seniors in their 80s and 90s. even 100 months after they were displaced by a fire at their apartment complex in san francisco's japantown. as abc seven news anchor dion lim explains, the effort to get them back home was treated more like an eviction than a homecoming yoga. >> warsaw i almost fell into depression because i didn't know what was happening. >> 91 year old yong lim remembers the fire that ripped through her senior housing facility along fillmore street like it was yesterday. >> some firemen came and lifted me and took me downstairs. >> the blaze on may 10th forced more than 50 seniors at the jones senior homes to find new housing. many relocated temporarily to this extended stay building in alameda, but on september 4th, residents who lived on the second floor of the jones were given this letter saying restoration work was done and they needed to move back by

september 6th. >> in two days, like it's impossible for them to move back, i feel worried and concerned. >> we need time. >> panicked and confused due partially to the language barrier, men and women in their 80s 90s and even as old as 103 grabbed their belongings and walkers and attempted to move back. this 92 year old with an ailing back reduced to tears. >> even if they move in, it's really hard to live under these conditions. >> under that management, nonprofit groups such as asians are strong and the korean community center of the east bay, who have been aiding seniors with food and transportation since the fire. are now helping along with the asian law caucus, to foster more communication between the seniors and the alton management group that oversees the jones. i reached out to billy hutton of alton management. he acknowledged things could have gone smoother and apologized, promising more communication. going forward in different languages. >> this is what we want. we want them to speak their mind and actually be able to express their opinions and have a voice.

but do they really? do they see all that you are? at kaiser permanente all of us work together to care for all that is you. trabuco canyon. this after the county's public works crew accidentally started the fire while moving boulders to prevent public access to an area of the canyon where fire danger was high. this happened just before 130 this afternoon, and at last check the fire had already burned 1900 acres. two firefighters were treated for head related injuries and one civilian was hospitalized for

smoke inhalation. luckily, so far, there has been no significant report of property damage. >> and just to the north of that in san bernardino, firefighters are getting a handle on the line fire, which is now 5% contained but already more than 23,000 acres have burned and evacuation warnings are in place. reporter rob mcmillan, from our sister station in los angeles is there as the line fire continues to burn in the san bernardino mountains. >> some of the most active firefighting is on the east as the flames push toward highway 38 near mentone. >> the fire behavior today stands just like the last couple of days. it's going to be unpredictable. >> to the west, firefighters are keeping watch near running springs, where there were some real close calls over the weekend. >> it was pretty dark in here. we saw flames creeping up. actually caught a uh- just before our house caught fire. >> if you want to see how close the fire got to some of the homes in running springs, this

is a perfect example. you can see that home right there and then saturday, late in the afternoon, the fire came roaring up. this hill stopped in part because of the rain. >> i've not seen a rain drops that big, and it was wild as you. as you can look down here, you can see an edge where the. where it just stopped. >> so far the fire is only 3% contained. hand crews working carefully and methodically in steep, rugged terrain in the san bernardino mountains. one of the reasons highway 330 is still closed is that it's right in the middle of the fire zone. this happened over the weekend. you can see where the fire jumped the highway, damaging some of the guardrails here. it's likely this highway will be closed for quite some time. the evacuation of this area is required. meantime, more than 12,000 people remain under evacuation orders. most of those folks in the san bernardino mountains. >> if you're in one of those mountain communities, we really urge you to leave sooner than later. that way, we can cut down

on the amount of people that are on the roadways and have it safe for our firefighters to come out there and protect the property. >> rob mcmillan abc seven news. >> and of course eye on conditis here, and they're absolutely critical. >> meteorologist sandyha patel is tracking those for us. sandhya. >> yeah, and we do have red flag warnings down in southern california with good reason. as you take a look here, uh- two of them. one expires tonight at 11 p.m, the other one going until wednesday at 12 p.m. it's a combination of dry fuels, gusty winds, and low relative humidity. when you take a look at the satellite picture from earlier today, all the fires that are burning down in southern california, getting picked up as you see the explosive growth across the region. some of that smoke drifting into other areas. but so far we're okay. now i do want to give you a quick update on tropical storm francine. it is expected to rapidly intensify into a hurricane right now packing winds of 65 miles an hour. it is nearing parts of texas and louisiana as it

approaches, becoming a category one hurricane. tomorrow at 5:00, 48in of rain expected. dangerous storm surge, 5 to 10ft. and we're talking about very strong winds as well. landfall is expected near the louisiana coast wednesday evening with 85 mile an hour winds and then rapidly weakening. but of course, the concern is going to be the storm surge, the wind, the rain, a combination of all of that leading to flooding. live doppler seven here locally, showing you the fog along the coast. it's already crossed over into parts of the bay. tomorrow afternoon it is a cooler day across many parts of the bay area. breezy to gusty. low 60s to low 80s for our inland east bay. it's certainly not going to feel like summer, but wednesday temperatures will start to recover a couple of degrees, and on thursday we get you back up into the upper 80s. you will notice that by friday we start to see a few low 90s, so it will feel like summer again in a few days. but until then, summer is on break. tomorrow it's more
