surreal. >> a strong start to the 49 ers season from the scoreboard to something much bigger than football. good evening i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley thanks for joining us. >> it was such a great night on so many levels. a commanding win for the niners despite star christian mccaffrey on the sidelines. >> but the real spotlight tonight was on the first responders who saved rookie wide receiver ricky pearsall's life barely more than a week ago. >> we have team coverage with the best moments from the field and the fans. but let's begin with the powerful reunion as ricky pearsall recovers from that shooting in union square. reporter emotional moments on the field as ricky pearsall reunites with two women who helped save his life. just over a week ago. people like that in my life. doctor lucy kornblith, a surgeon at san francisco general hospital, and sergeant joel harrell, the officer who heard the shots and ran to help. >> just going to work, showing up and uh- that incident occurred and i responded. and it turns out that he is a 40 niner

player. and i was like, oh my god, hold on to me. >> harrell, a longtime officer who once patrolled candlestick park, now visiting levi's stadium for the first time at the 40 niners invitation. >> i'm just thankful. the outcome. i'm thankful he listened. that was a big part of it. him being an athlete, him being used to coaching, it all came together. >> she describes to abc news reporter melissa adan how she comforted pearsall, holding his wound as they waited for help. >> to me, i know you don't know me, but please trust me. god is with us. it's not your time, okay? it's not your time. i want you to continue to breathe, okay? just breathe. >> pearsall is out for at least three more weeks, though he told the monday night football crew he felt amazing, like he could be back on the field right now. the 17 year old accused of shooting him while in the attempted robbery is due back in court tomorrow. abc seven has learned he bought a gun to school in the week before the crime. ricky pearsall just days after taking a bullet through the chest, saying thank you to

the women who helped him through it. unbelievable. i mean, this is surreal. >> you know, i love the 40 niners. i love my job. i love this city. i just i can't believe this. >> it just brings a tear to your eye. goosebumps. just fabulous. yeah. >> of course, plenty of highlights on the sidelines and on the field tonight. >> it was a good night for the niners. sports director larry beil is here. >> yeah, that was so moving, wasn't it? touching. we've been covering this story for a couple of weeks, but still, it just it really hits home. all right, as for the game, christian mccaffrey, nfl offensive player of the year last season. the niners did not have him against the jets because of a nagging calf slash achilles injury. take a look at some of the highlights here. aaron rodgers back after suffering his own achilles tendon surgery. christian mccaffrey on the sideline because they don't want him having surgery. they want him healthy. deebo deebo samuel on a two yard sweep 13. 740 niners. third quarter. it's the jordan mason show. 28 carries 147

yards. and there's a lot of people who had never heard of jordan mason before tonight. but he was fantastic. and they all know his name. and there's a good chance that he might be starting again next week. jake moody six for six on field goals. niners win 3219. mason was undrafted. the same year. purdy was the last pick in the draft, so brock purdy has seen mason stay patient and waiting for his time to shine. >> to see him over the last two years, you know, just push the envelope more and more every year. and then get an opp, you know, this year at camp and do well with it. and obviously in the first game of the season, he did great with it. so really, really excited for him. he's earned it, man. he's the kind of guy that was not given to him. and so, to see him go out and do what he did tonight man i'm so happy for him. and i know he's going to keep pushing. >> we got people who follow the leaders and you know, we got leaders that echo what the coaches are are preaching. and so i think that's the that's the reason our locker room is able to stay focused. >> yeah i mean you always have an idea of, you know, the type

of team you got heading into a year, but you never really know until you go out there week one and you see it. right. and so to be able to put a performance of a true team effort, offensively, defensively kicking game, you know, it obviously builds confidence going into into week two. >> so we'll see. we don't know whether christian mccaffrey is going to be ready for next week's game against the vikings. that's a road game for the niners. if he can't go then we'll see a lot more of j.p. mason. there's a faux controversy out there about when he actually learned that he would start. right. he told some reporters friday. and then kyle shanahan said i didn't tell him that. and so this has turned into kind of a faux it doesn't matter. it doesn't it doesn't matter. he was great. and the niners won. and maybe he plays again next week. >> and it's good to know they they absolutely played great without mccaffrey. >> without mccaffrey. yeah. did a good job. remarkable. >> thanks. >> all right well as for the fans tonight's strong performance is stoking hopes of another chance at the super bowl. abc seven news reporter j.r stone brings us to levi's stadium with the reaction from

heard more negative emotions about that one. however, everyone said they did what they had to do to tailgate with those folks that they knew. and then get into the game at levi's. j.r stone abc seven news. >> j.r. thank you. and larry will be back with more highlights and postgame reaction ahead in sports. all right. >> turning now to developing news in southern california with multiple fast moving wildfires, 1900 acres burned in orange county's trabuco canyon in a fire sparked today. a public works crews started it by accident trying to prevent access to dangerously dry brush. 1400 homes were evacuated as a result and in san bernardino county, thousands are still under evacuation because of the line fire and more are prepared to leave after seeing flames and the air gets bad, we're probably going to head down. >> hopefully it will just burn up the ridge and our little community will be free from flames that are nearby. >> big bear valley is under

evacuation warnings because of the fire. within days, it spread to more than 23,000 acres in just blistering hot temperatures. 36,000 structures are threatened, but no homes have burned, at least not yet. >> in the north bay, some evacuation orders were scaled back to warnings near the boyles fire this evening after about 4000 people were told to leave yesterday. it's burned 81 acres in lake county, but crews are gaining some control. the fire is now at 40% containment. firefighters say 30 homes were lost and about 40 to 60 vehicles destroyed. rescue crews are searching the burn area for all the missing pets and posting the ones they find. clearlake animal control has reunited some families thanks to microchips and hope for many more reunions. turning now to our accuweather forecast as we look out live at the embarcadero tonight. cooler weather is coming our way this week, along with some really windy conditions. let's bring in abc7 news meteorologist sandhya patel with your 24 hour accuweather forecast. sandhya. yeah ama, as we take a look at a

live picture right now from our mount tam cam, you can see why we are going cooler. the marine layer has ramped up and it is pretty obvious that it's going to feel like fall when you look at these temperatures tomorrow morning. gray and drizzly 50s to start off the day for most of you. sun and clouds at noontime, gusty and cooler at 4 p.m. only low 80s for our warmest spots. inland areas today were in the low 90s. it's still going to be windy at 7 p.m. you can see the hourly winds ramping up overnight going into tomorrow, and then you will also notice the temperature trend. santa rosa's average high is 84 degrees. tomorrow you're at 78. it's going to take a few days to recover and then going back down again for the weekend. i'll be back with a full look at the forecast and coming right up. >> all right. sandhya, thanks very much. see you shortly. a business in the east bay is asking for help after a really unusual theft. they say someone broke in this weekend and left with two exotic birds. the birds

are worth thousands of dollars and they're absolutely beloved by the owner. abc seven news reporter tim johns has details now on this brazen bird napping. >> walk into feathered follies in concord, and you may notice it's a little more empty than usual. owner mercedes kemp tells me on friday night, someone broke into the shop and stole her beloved pet bird, tofu. tofu lived at feathered folly since 2010 and is worth an estimated $2,500. >> he's a kid to us. he's our, you know, basically a baby that we take care of. and they're not just things. they're not just money. they're, you know, living beings. >> in addition to taking tofu, another pet bird, which was being boarded at the store named plato, was also stolen. this front door was never actually broken into, according to kemp. instead, the robbers broke this window and went directly into the room where the birds were. >> the doors to the cages were open and the window was smashed

in. stuff was pushed out of the way, tipped over onto the floor. >> during our visit monday, kemp showing us the room. that's the window that they broke in through which she's left exactly as she found it over the weekend. other than boarding up the broken window, she even pointed out what she believes to be a handprint on tofu's cage, as well as a single bloodied feather left behind on the ground. kemp says she believes the break in was done by someone familiar with how to handle birds, and that tofu was the intended target. >> i truly hope that it's just as simple as someone wanted him and has him, or that they want to sell him and flip him. if anything happened to him permanently. i don't know how i'd cope with that. >> kemp has since started a gofundme page to raise money to offer his reward for anyone who was able to help get the birds back. and for the outpouring of support, kemp says she's received since everything happened, she just has one message. >> all of us who love him have spent, you know, years with him. i can't believe how many people

down to the big event. >> tomorrow night's debate on abc seven will be the first, and potentially only time vice president harris and former president trump face off before election day. >> the two top candidates are preparing in their own ways today. vice president kamala harris landed in philly tonight. former president donald trump is set to arrive tomorrow, with polls still showing a very tight race. >> tomorrow's debate could have a major impact. >> those undecideds, it might. it's a marginal group. it's a it's a small group. uh. but, you know, this election is going to be a marginal election, and it's going to be decided by a small amount of votes. >> both candidates are going in with significant new endorsements. harris with members of the cheney family, longtime and staunch republican,

reaches of hollywood. he was with family when he died. no cause of death was shared. >> a vigil in oakland tonight remembered all of the palestinians killed in the ongoing israel-hamas war. it was organized by volunteers, some of which are returning from serving in the west bank. just today, an israeli airstrike on gaza killed at least 40 people, and 60 others were wounded. that's according to a palestinian news agency and new at 11. the bay area's most prominent black owned coffee company is filing for bankruptcy. oakland based red bay coffee filed for chapter 11 protection. the fruitvale coffee roaster has made oprah's list of favorite things a number of times. court documents show the company is citing the impact of the pandemic and two lawsuits as its reason to reorganize. filings say red bay will keep its five cafes open during the bankruptcy process. >> building a better bay area is our focus at abc7, and tonight we are sharing a breakthrough in that mission. families in need who got a helping hand are now

paying it forward. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez takes us to the south bay for the celebration. >> five south bay families are being awarded for their determination and resilience. on monday, santa clara county supervisors recognized families from the cal works program who have received critical services and used them to improve their lives. >> graduating with a master's degree in counseling and guidance. >> julia vasquez cried happy tears. she experienced homelessness and incarceration growing up. vasquez turned to cal works when she was pregnant with her daughter. >> they helped us with childcare, books, transportation, any fees. at the time, i think i was even doing medical assisting. they paid for my scrubs. >> currently, vasquez is working for the county's office of diversion and reentry services. >> i feel like i can be that great example, too, of somebody who maybe got in a little trouble, made a bad mistake, and has learned from that mistake, grown and move on. and now i want to help others do the same. >> sears honorees also include

abdul khalil and nafeesa sadat. for years, they worked for the u.s. department of defense in afghanistan, but had to flee the country for their safety. >> the first day when we received $250, you know, that was an amazing day for us. >> the two are now employed and no longer receiving assistance because of your help. >> we are now standing here and we are supporting our kids. >> megan nguyen helped honoree to navigate the english language program. >> she takes the bus everywhere she goes. yet she's on time for appointment five ten minutes early. i don't know how she managed. she had three kids. >> marissa mendoza fled from texas with nothing but her three kids. with the help from cal works, mendoza will be pursuing her nursing degree this fall. you decide your future, you can make it happen. >> and there's programs out there that will help you. >> the cal works program serves around 6000 families each year in san jose. lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> okay, we're turning our attention to the weather now.

>> we are meteorologist sandhya patel tracking the forecast as another week begins. sandhya. yeah. >> dan. tomorrow and ama, you might want to layer up because it's going to start off cool and it's going to be cooler than average for the afternoon. i do want to show you some live pictures from our tower cameras. we do have some clouds gathering, some pretty views from our tower cameras there. >> and fog also. so tomorrow morning you're going to notice it. temperatures are running double digits lower than where they were inland. 16 degrees cooler in livermore, ten degrees in concord. not so noticeable along the coast or in the city where numbers are up a few degrees right now. but take a look at the highs versus average. santa rosa tomorrow. six degrees difference between the high versus the average. oakland five. you will notice san francisco five as well. sorry, i should have said minus there area of low pressure is going to start to move down the west coast. and as it does, those temperatures are going to fall. it's going to be a one day

deal where you will notice that it's cooler than average. certainly, gray skies along the coastline here on live doppler seven, we do have 50s and 60s. for most of you, it's going to be good sleeping weather, especially with the nice delta breeze. 20 miles an hour out towards fairfield. the winds as we go hour by hour tomorrow morning. a little breezy out towards oakland and the delta picking up in the afternoon. you're going to notice 2025 miles an hour right through the central bay and then even stronger winds are coming your way as that trough approaches. and pushes through behind the system. so 3:00 in the afternoon on wednesday, you're looking at over 30 mile an hour winds. a live view from san jose overnight tonight. clouds, fog and drizzle fall like weather coming your way with below average temperatures for tomorrow and the next few days. breezy to gusty winds. so we go hour by hour tomorrow morning the clouds will fill in. there will be some spotty drizzle at 5:00. watch out. visibility will be poor in spots and then the clouds higher. clouds will be passing through the low clouds will never clear the coastline. so tomorrow afternoon and

evening it is going to be partly to mostly cloudy. depending on where you are. inland areas will see a little more sun 40s around places like santa rosa. you know that the seasons are changing in about two weeks. 61 degrees in antioch. everyone else in the 50s. tomorrow afternoon you are looking at highs that will range from the low 60s to the low 80s. a quick look at tropical storm francine. it is spinning in the gulf of mexico. warnings and watches are already up for parts of texas and louisiana, expected to rapidly intensify to a category one hurricane. dangerous storm surge. they're looking at flooding rain up to ten 4 to 8in, up to 12in in isolated spots and as a category one making landfall on wednesday near the louisiana coast. so of course, the danger is going to be not storm surge, the rain, but strong winds as well. the accuweather seven day forecast, gusty and cooler tomorrow, below average and then windy for your wednesday. temperatures will bounce back thursday and friday and you will notice it cools
