to perhaps individuals that may not have fully earned that title, but james earl jones was not in that category. he absolutely was the greatest of all time. >> james earl jones was born in mississippi, grew up on a farm in michigan. as a child, he struggled with a stutter and was mute for years, eventually turning to poetry and acting to help him develop that voice, which would become one of the most recognizable in american cinematic history, to gain the act of speech for him was a significant development in his life, and that kind of informed his ability to play these magnificent roles in the 1950s. jones got his start on broadway, performing everything from shakespeare to chekhov before moving on to tv in the 60s as the world turns in 1965, he became one of the first african-american actors in a continuing role on a daytime drama for as the world turns. >> he also was someone who really broke a lot of ground for

black entertainers and black performers. he really opened the door for people who looked like him to come behind him. >> but it was his breakout role in the 1968 play the great white hope that solidified his career. for his role as a fictionalized version of boxer jack johnson, the first african-american heavyweight boxing champ. >> i saw that performance. i was 11 years old. it was the most exciting thing in manhattan at that time that he was playing this role. i can still remember a guy hawking photos outside, going photos and pictures of the great james earl jones. this was 1968. >> i find your lack of faith disturbing, but it was his 1977 casting as the iconic voice of darth vader. >> take it away. >> the menacing jedi turned villain from star wars that captured and terrified audiences across four decades. >> zarabi and i didn't see you at the presentation of simba jones continuing to perform into his 80s, reprising his voice
