this morning. >> good tuesday morning everyone i'm andrew dymburt. >> good morning to all of you. i'm rhiannon ally. we begin with the presidential debate. now just hours away, the trump and harris campaigns sharing their strategies for tonight's showdown. >> it will be the first time the candidates have met each other, and the stakes could not be higher. the race is a virtual tie, and this is likely their only debate of the campaign. >> abc's lana moise reports on what the candidates hope to accomplish tonight. >> reporter vice president harris arriving in philadelphia for tonight's crucial debate. after spending days prepping in pittsburgh, holding mock debates. trump is set to arrive tonight after holding several informal policy meetings with advisers. it will be an intimate setting, six feet apart and no audience. >> the former president won the coin toss, and so he chose to have the final word in this debate. vice president kamala harris choosing the podium on the right side of the debate stage. their microphones will only be turned on when it is their turn to speak.

>> harris says she's prepared for anything trump throws at her. >> we should be prepared for the fact that he is not burdened by telling the truth. >> trump's campaign says he'll reveal harris as a radical left lunatic. >> she will be the worst president and trump is never wrong. i am never, ever wrong. >> some of the issues harris could be asked about tonight include the border and a 2019 questionnaire in which cnn reports harris voiced support for defunding immigration and customs enforcement. trump surrogates say the former president will link harris to policy failures on the border, crime and inflation. >> you can't talk about turning the page when you're the one who created our current nightmare. >> another poll this morning shows the race is a statistical tie. it finds harris has more support from union members, while trump has more support from veterans. and in a race where age could be a factor. 61% say they view harris as mentally sharp, compared to 52% for trump. the former president could be asked tonight about

democrat woman dumb republican women get their backs up, too. >> and that new poll found 52% of women support harris versus 46% of men. but those numbers flip for trump, who enjoys a 52 to 46 advantage among men. rhiannon. andrew. >> all right, lionel, thank you. our debate coverage begins at 8 p.m. eastern. the debate itself begins at 9:00 eastern. >> an explosive new wildfire in southern california has burned eight square miles in orange county. the fire began in trabuco canyon, forcing the evacuation of 1400 homes. officials say the flames were sparked by a public works crew, who were performing fire safety work. the much larger lion fire in san bernardino county has forced 12,000 people to evacuate. the extreme heat is finally coming to an end there today, but shifting winds could pose problems for firefighters. >> meanwhile, francine is strengthening in the gulf of mexico. tropical storm and hurricane watches and warnings are posted along the gulf coast. the storm is expected to make

landfall in louisiana tomorrow, possibly as a category two hurricane with up to a foot of rain. we'll check your forecast in a few moments. >> the justice department says it has uncovered a plot to incite a race war. arresting suspects, allegedly part of a white supremacist group plotting attacks. here's abc's christiane cordero. >> this morning, a federal indictment against the alleged leaders of a white supremacist group seeking to ignite a race war. they're giving out bomb making instructions. they're putting together hit lists. 34 year old dallas humber and 37 year old matthew allison face more than a dozen federal charges related to a chat group on the social media platform telegram, which has been criticized for its relaxed approach to content moderation. the group, which refers to itself as terror graham, allegedly directed its members to commit hate crimes against black and jewish people, immigrants and members of the lgbtq plus community. the indictment also claims the group plotted to kill high value targets, including a u.s.

senator, and incited followers to carry out terror acts around the world. >> a chilling part is that some of these attacks, according to the justice department, have already been carried out, including a man in slovenia who killed two people before taking his own life, a man in turkey who stabbed five people, and a new jersey teen who the fbi says plotted to attack the power grid. >> the indictment claims humber posted pictures of the 2016 pulse nightclub shooting in florida as an example of what members could carry out the threat of domestic terrorism is on the rise inside the united states, and acts of violence carried out by white supremacists is the single most lethal type of domestic violent extremism that we see in the country right now. the two suspects are in custody awaiting a court date. christiane cordero abc news. >> christiane, thank you for that. the manhunt for a highway sniper in kentucky is now entering its fourth day. the search for the suspect, joseph couch, is focusing near the daniel boone national forest.

the reward is now $15,000. and officials say couch texted a woman before he allegedly shot and wounded five people on saturday to say he was going to kill a lot of people. no word on a motive. >> now to the nfl star briefly detained in miami. new video of the confrontation is fueling new calls for the officers to be disciplined. >> why don't you have your newly released body camera? >> video shows the moment police detained miami dolphins star wide receiver tyreek hill. officers say they pulled him over near hard rock stadium for speeding and reckless driving. then this happened. >> keep your window down. i'm going to get you out of the car. as a matter of fact, get out of the car. >> what starts as a dispute between an officer and hill about keeping the car's window rolled down escalates to hill being ripped from his seat. get out! get out! hill is forced down onto the pavement. officers handcuffed the nfl star and bring him to his feet, then pin him back down to the ground. i just had surgery on my knee. >> i just had surgery on my knee, bro. i just had surgery on

when they need it most. because happiness matters. debate tonight live on abc. >> incredible video a camera was rolling as this bridge collapsed, sending several vehicles plunging into the river below. it happened in vietnam, where a typhoon has triggered deadly floods. 13 people were reported missing in that bridge collapse. at least four of them were recovered. >> new body camera video shows the suspect in last week's school shooting in georgia being questioned by law enforcement. last year, investigators were looking into alleged threats made by then 13 year old colt gray. they say they found no probable cause to arrest him, but the local sheriff says her department, quote, probably

dropped the ball by not notifying other schools in the area about colt being questioned. he allegedly killed two students and two teachers last wednesday. colt's mother says she was not aware that his father had bought the gun as a gift. she says she called a school counselor on the day of the shooting to warn them about a message she had received from colt, the counselor said, well, i wanted to let you know that earlier this morning, one of colt's teachers had sent me an email that said colt had been making references to school shootings between my gut feelings. >> the text messages, and now this email. y'all need to go like, run to the classroom. >> colt and his father face murder charges. authorities have not determined a motive. >> we turn now to a new study on the toll the pandemic took on teens. a new study is revealing unusual changes in teenagers brain development during the

pandemic. the study found covid era lockdowns ended up aging teenagers brains faster than the usual rate, more than four years faster than usual in girls, compared to just over a year faster in boys. >> the authors hypothesize that adolescent girls were affected more than boys because they may be more dependent on that social interaction and being able to connect with their friends back in 2018, researchers began tracking brain changes in 160 people ages 9 to 17. >> they found lockdowns contributed to an increase of anxiety, depression and behavioral disorders, causing their brains to mature faster. the same type of accelerated brain aging has been documented in teens who've suffered severe trauma, stress, and neglect. >> but it's important to note that these studies don't exactly tell us what the long term effects are, or if the process can be reversed or slowed down
