11:00 pm
we're back now here at the national constitution center in philadelphia. and with chris christie. so governor christie, you heard the debate. remarkable debate. bottom line, what'd you think? >> she was exquisitely well prepared. she laid traps. and he chased every rabbit down every hole instead of talking about the things that he should
11:01 pm
have been talking about. this is the difference between someone who's well prepared and someone who's unprepared. whoever did debate prep for donald trump should be fired. he was -- he was not good tonight at all. and what harris did was what she had to do, which was to prove that she belonged on that stage. she has a voice that wants to try to unite the country. and donald trump spent more time talking about people eating pets, people at his rallies and whether he had more or less, than he did about the economy. and that is a huge fail tonight. i think what we're going to see is that kamala harris is now being seen by a lot of voters as a potential president. that's what she needed to accomplish tonight. trump better get to work or he's going to lose this election. >> characteristically blunt assessment from governor chris christie. thank you, governor. mary? >> all right. let's go to former dnc chair donna brazile. so donna, you have certainly studied many a debate in your career. how does this one compare?
11:02 pm
>> i think it was one of the best debate performances i've ever seen in my life. and i've seen a lot. and i've helped a lot of people prepare for these big moments. she met the moment. she seized the opportunity to tell the american people what she would do during her four years. she commanded the issues. and she did not allow the former president to bait her. instead she led the way forward. she turned the page. and i think this race is about to get even more interesting now. >> we will see if it moves the needle, donna. thank you. >> all right. over to the other side now. former rnc chair reince priebus. all right. reince, the harris campaign says they want another debate. if you were advising the trump campaign, would you tell them to do it? >> sure. i would tell them to do it. and the reason is like i said before, donald trump's numbers just don't move. i mean, the reality tonight, i know donna's excited, but the truth is she didn't -- kamala harris didn't address the most important thing the american people care about, which is the
11:03 pm
economy and the cost of living. she had no answers on immigration. she had no answers when she was asked about defunding the police. she had nothing to say about the families that were lost in afghanistan, which was a true layup. she should have been fact checked a lot more on some of the things she said in regard to this comment about a bloodbath which was about the auto industry. so look, i think a lot of things were not said tonight that she proceeded to say in order to move the numbers and i don't think donald trump's numbers will move at all. they haven't moved at all for months. >> reince priebus, donna brazile, both thank you for your time. >> all right. well, i've got to say, again, what a incredible debate. consequential debate, no doubt. i don't know how many votes will actually be moved. i don't know how many persuadable voters are actually out there. but kamala harris had a chance here to introduce herself to the country, to people who know who she is but don't know where she stands. but, you could debate how much she did in terms of the
11:04 pm
specifics of where she stands. but she stood up there and i think it was very significant to hear chris christie say that she acted like she seemed like she belonged. >> exactly. and chris was clearly impressed with that. but to your point, john, what matters is what the voters think. kamala harris was hurling things against donald trump. and he's been convicted. and january 6th. and everything else she could throw at him. but in the end right now he is tied with kamala harris. does this change anything? we've all seen debates where people are very proud of what they did. hillary clinton thought she won that debate, many debates in 2016. and she didn't win. so you have to be very careful. and it's very important to see what the voters think. >> and look, the harris campaign certainly thinks that they were -- you know, they put him on the defensive. they are going to keep getting out and making this message. she's going to be out there in those critical battlegrounds again later this week. they're still optimistic, they
11:05 pm
want that second debate. as rachel said the message from the campaign tonight vice president harris is ready for a second debate they're looking for one in october, they say is donald trump, question mark. one last goading of him to end the night. >> that is something else. i did not predict that at the beginning. rachel? >> bottom line, voters out there want a change. that's what the polls say. and both of these candidates really trying to present themselves as the agent of change. we'll have to see in the polls who did the most effective job of doing that tonight. >> we will see. all right. that is it for us here in philadelphia. a night to remember for sure. our race for the white house post-debate coverage continues on abc news live, disney plus, hulu, and anywhere else you stream live news. and your local news is next.
11:06 pm
a historic handshake, setting the stage for one incredibly fierce debate. >> some good debate. >> you see, vice president harris and former president trump's first meeting ever in an intense face off around politics, personality and dramatically different visions for our country. let's talk about what is important in this race. >> it is important that we move forward, that we turn the page. >> people want to take their country back. our country is being lost. we're a failing nation. >> tonight on abc seven news at 11, we have the reaction from all sides of the bay area and both sides of the aisle as this unprecedented election races into the final stretch. >> always live. abc seven news starts right now. >> a heated matchup tonight as the first presidential debate between vice president kamala harris and former president donald trump shows just how
11:07 pm
dramatically the race for the white house has changed. >> fiery back and forth as the candidates criticized each other's policies and got personal. and in the moments after the debate, vice president kamala harris picks up an endorsement from a powerhouse outside the political world. taylor swift. good evening. i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us. it was an intense exchange with harris putting trump on the defensive many times in tonight's abc news debate. trump also went on the attack. >> there were clashes over the economy, immigration, abortion and the state of our democracy. >> i probably took a bullet to the head because of the things that they say about me. they talk about democracy. i'm a threat to democracy. they're the threat to democracy, not afford to have a president of the united states who attempts, as he did in the past, to upend the will of the voters in a free and fair election. >> we have team coverage tonight with big picture bay area centric analysis and reaction
11:08 pm
from our neighbors on all sides of the political spectrum. >> but first reporter leland pinder, from our sister station in philadelphia, joins us live with moments from the debate, really, that everyone is talking about. leland >> reporter dan and ama, it remains to be seen how or if this debate will change the race, but it was clear tonight both candidates understood what was at stake. after a somewhat awkward handshake, the candidates got right to business. >> donald trump has no plan for you. >> vice president harris did her best to link trump to project 2025 and his record in his first term. >> donald trump left us the worst unemployment since the great depression. donald trump left us the worst public health epidemic in a century. >> trump linking harris to president biden hammering issues like the economy. >> they had the highest inflation, perhaps in the history of our country, because i've never seen a worse period of time. people can't go out and
11:09 pm
buy cereal or bacon or eggs. >> trump also sticking to immigration and border security throughout, painting a bleak outlook under a harris presidency. she's destroying this country. >> and if she becomes president, this country doesn't have a chance of success. >> harris punching back, referencing a border security bill in congress. trump helped tank a few months ago. she also drew in her time as a prosecutor in california. >> i'm the only person on this stage who has prosecuted transnational criminal organizations for the trafficking of guns, drugs and human beings. >> abortion and foreign policy also central to the debate, at one point, both using moments and phrases they've become known for against the other. trump interrupting harris, saying he's speaking. harris reminding trump he was fired in 2020. is, of course, no stranger to california. the oakland native serving as the san francisco da attorney general and u.s. senator before becoming vice
11:10 pm
president. now here is closed. the debate tonight very with optimism. trump closing the debate, saying that the u.s. is a failing nation under the current administration. live here in philadelphia leland pinder, abc seven news. >> all right, leland, thank you for that. now, for harris, this was the most important night of her political career for trump. tonight was mostly campaign trail classics. abc seven news insider phil matier watched with us and shared his big takeaways. >> as debates go, it was pretty much a brawl. we had both sides hitting hard. harris hitting hard on what she saw as trump's shortcomings and his personality flaws, as well as his policy flaws. and we had trump counterpunching attacking the biden administration as a failed administration and harris as an extension of it. >> we did not see the california centric attacks on homelessness and crime that have become routine for trump on the campaign trail, or much from harris on her record as a bay area prosecutor. but phil says
11:11 pm
our state will still play a prominent role in the final weeks of the campaign. >> california is going to be pivotal in supplying money and enthusiasm for the rest of the country, but california stayed out of this debate in many of its more negative ways. so we in some ways, we sort of dodged a bullet on this one. >> we asked phil if he thinks this debate moved the needle after all. the last one led to president biden dropping out of the race. he told us he thinks tonight alone may not be enough for the undecided voters in those few critical swing states. >> and from democrats to republicans to those in the middle, those swing voters, people packed debate watch parties across the bay area tonight. abc seven news reporter j.r. stone takes you to one gathering in the home where vice president harris once lived, and has reaction from both sides. >> there are trump on the top of your screen. you're looking at a kamala harris debate viewing party taking place where she used to live. on the bottom of your screen, you're looking at
11:12 pm
the gop trump viewing party, at the mad dog in the fog bar, both in san francisco, both with eager crowds. we start in harris's former condo in the city by the bay. those attending say she lived here for 17 years before it became an airbnb. >> i think it's incredible to see kamala harris, whose apartment we are in tonight, standing up for the values that so many in san francisco believe in. so many across the nation believe in. >> how could people be supporting somebody who is so unclear? crazy has such a lie filled, troubling vision for our country. but they are. and so it's been making me feel a little bit sad, really. >> at this party there were laughs and cheers, but everything was pro. kamala and anti-trump. >> on the one hand, you have a prosecutor who is well prepared, a policy wonk, a smart human being, and a good debater. and on the other hand, you have a
11:13 pm
chaos agent who is desperately trying to stay out of prison. this debate is fascinating, but at the gop viewing party, a much different take on the debate pro-trump anti harris. >> there has to be a change because this illegitimate regime has run us into the ground. prices of beers, prices of food, prices of gas up through the roof. >> yeah i think i think president trump is doing very well frankly i think if it was a it was a fight that they'd call a tko. >> she didn't answer any questions. and she really blew it on foreign policy when it came to energy policy and the economy. >> yvette corcoran is a republican running for state senator. she didn't say who she thought did a better job in the debate. i mean, were you more impressed by donald trump or kamala harris, the subject of the question that she was asked, and pivoted to something else? >> i think we have to see what the voters decide. >> on november. >> certainly, one thing was
11:14 pm
clear whether they were watching in a condo or at a neighborhood bar. it seems like the debate was an enjoyable one for those on both sides. j.r. stone abc, seven news and back in pennsylvania, harris had the backing of several california democrats in the spin room, including senator laphonza butler and governor gavin newsom. >> newsom, sharing his take, calling it a terrible night for trump and a great night for freedom, bringing up his long history with harris. >> i know her as well or better than anybody in this room. >> i've known her for a decade before we were both in politics. >> i've seen her perform at exceptional levels. this was another level she's going to take it up a notch. >> still, newsom says trump experienced what harris's opponents in california politics have long dealt with, saying he's looking forward to another debate. harris says he wants to do a she wants to do a second. trump says he'll think about it. >> well, taylor swift, wait until until the end of the debate to share that she is
11:15 pm
voting for vice president harris in november, the singer wrote on instagram. she shared this because of i generated deepfakes of her falsely claiming support of trump. she closed her post with a message to first time voters, calling for them to register and research. she wrote, quote, i've done my research and i've made my choice. your research is all yours to do, and the choice is yours to make. the first time voters at bay area colleges are taking that research seriously, focused on policy questions in a debate that sometimes skim the details. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez watched the back and forth from san jose state, and has reaction from students. >> a group of san jose state students gathered to watch the debate in person and online, each one motivated to follow this presidential election for different reasons. >> the economy i wanted to hear about, like the housing crisis. >> first main thing is immigration. >> our health care, our health care is not where it needs to be. >> at bridge csu, a nonpartisan
11:16 pm
organization, helped host the watch party on the bottom floor of the campus library. >> i just want to, like, be civil and see, like, what other people think. and like, i feel like it's not just like trump or harris. i think it's about policy over party and like, who has the best policies? >> it should be people that don't agree on everything, but still able to come together and, you know, sit in the same room and, you know, watch their candidates debate. >> many students told us this is a politically charged time at colleges, especially with things happening internationally in different countries. >> it's definitely affecting the overall atmosphere of students opinions, ideas and how they are able to represent themselves. >> you know, while it might seem really charged right now, i believe it's for the for the good students from csu, stanford, saint mary's and other bay area college campuses are coordinating a pre-election event in november. >> even though you know you're not going to get that perfect individual, just vote in san jose. >> lauren martinez, abc seven

11:25 pm
it was really horrible to see, but i'm glad that they have the downtown street team to clean all that up. >> since it started in 2011, the downtown streets team has cleared 7 million gallons of debris. >> a san francisco home had an unexpected resident, a coyote. you see that tail sticking out there? yeah. somehow it got trapped. couldn't find its way out of the backyard. family discovered the animal hiding in a wall. so they called animal control. look at that face. officers came and removed it. they think it's a youngster that might be 5 to 6 months old. so not that old at all. looks a little worried. yeah. >> all right. let's turn to the weather forecast. midweek is here. and nice and cool. >> yes. felt that chill today, sandhya? yeah. >> it's definitely feeling like autumn around here a little early. okay dan and ama fall begins in just under two weeks. let me show you a live picture from our emeryville camera, where we are noticing that the view is pretty good, but this camera has been shaking. winds
