introduces herself to voters. with recent polls showing nearly a third of voters say they still don't know enough about her. while tonight was her first presidential debate, she did not hold back. >> when you then talk in this way in a presidential debate and deny what over and over again, our court cases, you have lost because you did in fact lose that election. it leads one to believe that perhaps we do not have in the candidate. to my right the temperament or or the ability to not be confused about fact. >> trump launching attacks on harris's record. >> she's worse than biden, in my opinion. i think he's the worst president in the history of our country. she goes down as the worst vice president in the history of our country. >> tonight was trump's seventh presidential debate. less than three months ago, he was on the debate stage facing off against a different candidate with the covid excuse me, with dealing with everything we have to do

with look, if we medicare. shortly after trump survived an assassination attempt, then biden dramatically ending his bid for a second term, passing the torch to his vice president. polling shows harris and trump locked in a tight race. a new york times cnn poll found trump leading harris by one percentage point. the former president's support holding steady despite a new york jury finding him guilty on all 34 counts of falsifying business records in the stormy daniels hush money case. >> i think this is so rich coming from someone who has been prosecuted for national crimes, economic crimes, election interference has been found liable for sexual assault. and his next big court appearance is in november at his own criminal sentencing. >> trump responding i'm winning most of them, but those are

>> and welcome back. we're joined by our abc powerhouse political team, former dnc chair donna brazile, former trump chief of staff reince priebus and former new jersey governor chris christie. chris, i'd like to start with you. you've debated trump six times. you've helped prep him for debates. how did he do tonight? and did kamala harris rattle him? >> look, he was wholly unprepared. how he couldn't have spent 75% of his time talking about the economy is beyond me, regardless of whatever questions he was getting asked. he chased every rabbit down every hole. byron. she was very well prepared and she laid traps for him. you know, she talked about his rallies and people leaving his rallies. any of us who know donald trump well know there's no way that he was going to avoid then disputing that. so he spends, you know, 90s on how he's got the biggest rallies in

the history of american politics. rather than talking about how the high cost of energy and the high cost of groceries are destroying american families. i mean, you know, he was awful tonight. she, on the other hand, was very well prepared. now, i still don't like the fact that she won't answer certain questions directly. and i think she'd actually get some credit with the american people if she did. but her main goal tonight was to prove that she belonged up on that stage, and i think she proved that she belonged up on that stage tonight. and that's going to make this race much more difficult for donald trump. >> donna, polls show a third of voters don't know much about kamala harris, do they know her now? >> i hope so, and i believe that she showed the american people what presidential leadership looked like. she gave not just her answers to the questions. she didn't ramble and take the bait like the former president did, but she laid out her vision. look, she knows that the

country wants to be united. she understands that people still would like to see prices go down. and she talked about it. she also defended america's role in the world compared to a former president who wants to, you know, hang around with dictators. i think this was a great night for the vice president. this is an opportunity for her to continue to tell the american people what she will do to lower prices because she has receipts, invest in america's future and keep america safe, strong and prosperous. she had the opportunity tonight to continue to outline that vision. but more importantly, she took advantage of the moment by making sure that the american people know that she wants to unite the country, that she wants to lead the she wants to be the leader of the free world and not go back to the policies and the chaos of the past. >> brian, americans know donald trump. do you think he won over any independent voters tonight, which will be the voters likely to decide who wins in november? >> well, i mean, donald trump's numbers are very resilient. you

know, i don't think the numbers move at all after tonight, at least as far as trump's numbers are concerned. it's a question as to whether or not kamala harris has been able to add any votes into her column. but the truth is, and chris is probably right about this, is that, you know, she didn't address the most important issue, which was the economy and the inflation. she had no answers on immigration. she didn't have an answer to the families that were lost in afghanistan. and i also thought that president trump's most important answer or accusation came at the very end when he said, listen, you're talking about all these plans that you have and you work in the white house every single day. why haven't you done it? and i know that that i think that was probably the most powerful moment of the night. so, look, i don't think much changes after tonight. i don't think she addressed the economic issues. so we'll see. my opinion is a little bit different than chris's and donna's, but it's really my view of how the fact that donald trump's polling just never moves at all. it just stays put, no matter what.

>> donna, the criticism of kamala harris has been that she's light on specifics. what issue do you think she did best on tonight, and what issue do you think she needs to improve upon moving forward? >> there's no question that as as vice president, she's been part of a team and part of an administration. they spent years cleaning up the mess that donald trump left behind. and now that she's swept most of those policies out the door, yes, it's important that she talks about lowering costs, making sure that housing is more affordable, helping small businesses, helping to ensure that our manufacturing sector is up to the task. for the 21st century. she's laying out those plans. i know some people don't want to go to kamala harris.com and read them for themselves, but i have had a great time reading it and i've also read project 2025. donald trump wants to distance himself from things that he has said in the past. and, you know, he still believes that deny, deny, deny is a strategy and a policy. it's not. the american people want relief. and kamala harris will show them the receipts. she will help american families. >> i love talking to you three,

but as always, time has become our enemy. so, chris, i'd like to end with you, if i may. experts have often said debates don't necessarily sway votes until the biden-trump debate is the point that you made earlier that that trump's numbers are baked in. kamala harris's numbers are baked in. so will this debate do you think make a difference? >> i think it could, byron. and i don't think her numbers are baked in. i do think donald trump's are. and to the extent that he could have helped himself tonight with independents and undecideds, he didn't he didn't do anything to try to reach out to them. and he, you know, spent a bunch of time tonight talking about how he still didn't lose the 2020 election. now, look, vice president harris, i think, would help herself, byron, if she would admit what the country knows, which is they were too late on the actions on the border and that that's hurt our country. she should admit that afghanistan withdrawal did not go well, and i think she would gain a lot of credibility with those moderate independent
