tonight as three massive wildfires exploded in size and threatened thousands of homes. >> apocalyptic images of red skies and massive smoke plumes show just how intense these fires are. there are new evacuation orders for the bridge fire. it is the third largest active wildfire anywhere in the state. it is also burning in los angeles and san bernardino counties and the angeles national forest. tonight it burned near the mountain high ski resort. cal fire says it has charred more than 34,000 acres since it started on sunday. it's been spreading fast farther to the east. the line fire is also forcing new evacuations. it started last thursday in san bernardino county and is up to 27,000 acres right now. there

are concerns the winds could pick up overnight, causing the fire, of course, to just explode in size. it is 14% contained and the fast moving airport fire in orange county has already scorched more than 19,000 acres. and cal fire says there is no containment as we speak. it reportedly was accidentally sparked by some heavy equipment and has closed a highway in the trabuco canyon area. there are a number of evacuation orders in place. >> developing news now out of carmel, where a stranded killer whale calf was rescued from a beach. it was stranded for at least nine hours and people worked tirelessly to free it. they brought in an excavator to lift the animal, putting it into a truck. it was seen moving its tail, but the extended period of time on land could be potentially deadly. the calf is now at the long marine lab at uc santa cruz, where it is receiving care. new developments in the shooting of niners rookie ricky pearsall and new video evidence. the accused teenage gunman was in court today and

waived his right to a speedy trial. his attorney tells abc seven news a new video shows the altercation between the teen and pearsall from a different vantage point, and could prove the incident was an attempted robbery, not an attempted murder. the boy is accused of shooting pearsall on august 31st in san francisco's union square. >> governor newsom's plan to tackle gas prices by requiring a backup supply is ruffling feathers with neighboring states. the governor called a special session to get lawmakers at the state capitol to vote on his plan. and now the governors of arizona and nevada are asking newsom to just back off. newsom's plan calls for oil companies to keep a backup supply to prevent price hikes and when refineries go offline, a california energy commission report says that could create artificial gas shortages in other markets. the governors in arizona and nevada say it would raise prices for drivers there, so they don't want any part of this. in a post on x, newsom

signaled he would not back down, saying, quote, allowing big oil to gouge californians at the pump to pad their profits is not an option. the state assembly will start hearings on newsom's proposal next week, a story we've been following since last july. >> vallejo city council tonight approved extending its state of local emergency for police staffing. the department has seen a significant drop in officers since 2020. the declaration allows for the city to streamline resources as it tries to replenish the ranks. currently, there are 73 sworn officers, with 34 of them doing patrols. there were well over 100 officers on the force in 2020. there are hopes the governor will sign a bill that will allow retired officers to return to work full time. >> every night here on abc seven news at 11, we try to approach much of what we do through the lens of building a better bay area, and tonight we have two breakthroughs to share in that effort. first, trains may keep rolling at the antioch amtrak station, the group that oversees passenger rail service voted

last year to close due to safety issues. antioch's mayor today says the city has met with the group to keep the station open. he says the city is still working out details on this, but will present the group with a plan next week that would keep the station operating. we'll keep tabs on that and our other. building a better bay area breakthrough comes from the south bay, where san jose is expanding its effort to make neighborhoods a little bit cleaner with the help of the unhoused. the downtown streets team has been focused on downtown san jose, and the city is now going to deploy it to at least four more areas. san jose sees the team as a solution to streets filled with trash and homelessness. >> if it wasn't for us, all the debris and needles and all that that i found and drug pipes and all that nasty stuff, it wouldn't be so good for children to even be in that environment. it was really horrible to see, but i'm glad that they have the downtown street team to clean

all that up. >> since it started in 2011, the downtown streets team has cleared 7 million gallons of debris. >> a san francisco home had an unexpected resident, a coyote. you see that tail sticking out there? yeah. somehow it got trapped. couldn't find its way out of the backyard. family discovered the animal hiding in a wall. so they called animal control. look at that face. officers came and removed it. they think it's a youngster that might be 5 to 6 months old. so not that old at all. looks a little worried. yeah. >> all right. let's turn to the weather forecast. midweek is here. and nice and cool. >> yes. felt that chill today, sandhya? yeah. >> it's definitely feeling like autumn around here a little early. okay dan and ama fall begins in just under two weeks. let me show you a live picture from our emeryville camera, where we are noticing that the view is pretty good, but this camera has been shaking. winds are gusting to 29 at concord. 26 sustained out towards the delta.

these winds are going to get even stronger tomorrow morning. first, the winds ramp up near the coast. point reyes 30 miles an hour. you will notice over 35 mile an hour winds by 3:00 in the afternoon. it's not just near the coast. it's inland areas as well. so the gusty pattern remains with us through the evening hours. the gusty winds prompting a wind advisory for parts of southern californi. red flag warning, their red flag warning for the central sierra so not out of fire danger yet. as a matter of fact, we're facing critical fire weather conditions across parts of california. here's why it's going to get windy. low pressure moving into the pacific northwest. high pressure over the eastern pacific. we're sort of sandwiched in between the two. pressure systems. and so that's why we're expecting the winds. certainly the pacific northwest getting some wet weather over the next 24 hours. that rain will continue to move through that region and come down into the northwestern portion of california. so for us here, we'll get the wind. we'll still remain at or below average for this time of year. and then
