>> good wednesday morning, everyone. i'm rhiannon ally. >> and i'm lionel moise. in for andrew. we begin this morning with the top moments from the presidential debate and the fallout. >> an overnight poll of debate watchers found vice president harris was the winner last night. but former president trump is calling it his best debate ever. and he's refusing to commit to a potential second debate. >> we begin our coverage with the awkward handshake on stage last night. former president trump seemed to head straight to his podium last night, but vice president harris walked across the stage after appearing to hesitate. harris offering her hand. >> kamala harris, let's have a good debate. >> you see, you have fun. >> both candidates were first asked about the economy and inflation. trump calling harris a marxist. >> everything that she believed three years ago and four years ago is out. the window. she's going to my philosophy now. in fact, i was going to send her a maga hat. she's a marxist. >> harris promised tax cuts for the middle class. >> my plan is to give a $50,000

eating the cats. they're eating. they're eating the pets of the people that live there. >> those reports, dismissed as not credible by local leaders in ohio. the harris campaign quickly called for a second debate. but trump last night noncommittal. they immediately called for a second debate because they lost. >> so we thought it was our best debate ever. it was my best debate ever. >> harris taking a victory lap after the debate. but saying she's still the underdog. >> i think that we think today was a good day and it kind of was. >> well, harris is facing criticism for not explaining the influx of migrants under the biden administration. instead, last night, she touted the bipartisan border security plan, which trump helped defeat. trump has said that plan was not tough enough, and a poll overnight by cnn found 63% of people who watched the debate believe harris won. >> that is compared to 37% for trump. abc's christiane cordero has more reaction, including

taylor swift's big endorsement. christiane. good morning brianna. >> good morning to you. yeah. the harris campaign says it was surprised to get that endorsement from taylor swift after the debate. vice president kamala harris picked up a major endorsement minutes after last night's face off in philadelphia. taylor swift posting on instagram i will be casting my vote for kamala harris and tim walz in the 2024 presidential election, swift calling harris a steady handed, gifted leader, adding we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos. florida congressman matt gaetz, a trump supporter, reacting. >> i love her songs, but i want to live in a world where liberals make my art and conservatives make my laws and policies. >> harris supporters at the debate were a mix of surrogates and party line crossovers, including anthony scaramucci, who served as trump's communications director, and california governor gavin newsom from the handshake itself when she came up and said, it's

tonight. people are already filling sandbags and stocking up on water. oil rigs in the gulf of mexico have been shut down, and people in low lying areas are being urged to evacuate. that storm could bring up to a foot of rain and a ten foot storm surge. we will take a closer look at your forecast in just a few moments. >> more buildings have been lost as three large wildfires burn out of control near los angeles. the so-called airport fire has already burned nearly 30mi■!s in orange and riverside counties. meanwhile, the bridge fire in san bernardino county has burned 53mi■!s. crews had to rescue people from their homes in a small mountain town. one man is in custody charged with arson for setting a separate fire in the same area. we want to show you this time lapse video showing a weather station engulfed in flames. the governor now asking for more federal aid. nearly 6000 firefighters, soldiers and first responders are on the front lines. >> now to those two planes

colliding at atlanta's airport. one plane's tail torn off. passengers describing how it happened. security video at the world's busiest airport in atlanta shows these two delta planes colliding. the larger plane's wing breaking off the tail of that smaller jet. all of a sudden, i just got hit by something completely jarred out of my seat. the larger plane was headed to japan. grant edwards was among the hundreds of passengers. >> all of a sudden, there was a bump. and it was. it was a hard bump. >> the smaller regional jet was headed to louisiana. >> the whole tail of that series off. >> passengers describing a loud scraping sound, some thrown from their seats. >> it felt and sounded like a car crash. there was, you know, kind of that crunch. there was. there was that that push that you get. >> passengers recording as they were bused back to the terminal, one or another of the airplanes involved were not on the right path. >> and whether or not that's because the markings were wrong or whether somebody was moving in the wrong direction, we don't

know yet. >> so many questions. federal investigators will now determine what went wrong. >> turning now overseas. new video showing the cramped tunnel where hostages were held by hamas and were recently killed. the israeli military says american hersh goldberg-polin and five others spent their final moments in this narrow tunnel 60ft underground. it is just two feet wide, with not enough room to stand and very little air. secretary of state antony blinken is visiting ukraine today to discuss whether to beef up ukraine's air defenses. president zelenskyy wants permission to use american missiles to strike strike deep inside russia. meanwhile, the u.s. is accusing iran of sending missiles to russia. >> it is time now for your wednesday weather. >> good morning. strengthening hurricane francine will approach landfall late today along the central louisiana coast, probably as a category two hurricane. we're expecting gusts of wind that may exceed 100mph

woman in indianapolis. 30 year old shante dixon was found shot to death in a wooded area just one day after she was reported missing. 29 year old francisco valdez allegedly confessed to shooting dixon in his car while assaulting her. uber says it is cooperating with police. >> now to a contentious hearing on capitol hill about nursing home deaths during the pandemic. former new york governor andrew cuomo on the hot seat. >> you've shown no remorse. you showed no responsibility. >> former new york governor andrew cuomo was grilled before a house subcommittee about his response to the pandemic, and the state's controversial nursing home policy. the committee says cuomo's decision to send covid positive patients back to nursing homes cost thousands of lives, but cuomo says his directive followed federal guidance to ease the burden on hospitals and says the deaths at nursing homes were not caused by readmitting patients. >> every study says that covid got into the nursing homes from

infected staff. community spread infected staff, neighborhoods that had higher covid infection rates had higher covid infection rates in their nursing homes. >> cuomo blames former president trump for the high number of covid deaths, as do some democrats on the committee. >> but do you have any doubt that donald trump's lies about the virus and his deliberate failure to develop a national policy to help the states made it more difficult for new york and other states to manage their pandemic response? >> at times, the hearing appeared to be more about politics than learning lessons from the pandemic. >> my question to you is when are you negotiating for your multimillion dollar advanced deal for your book? as seniors were dying in nursing homes, that is the question in front of you. >> you can't make up facts, congresswoman. >> the nursing home policy that cuomo was questioned about was in place for two months. the

merger in u.s. history plays out in court, the ftc is trying to block the proposed $24 billion merger between kroger and albertsons, claiming it would eliminate competition and lead to higher prices. but executives told the court the merger would allow for lower prices to better compete with companies like walmart and costco. aldi is also adding to the competition. the discount grocery chain says it's adding 13,000 workers while boosting its average hourly rate to $23. overall, food prices are up about 2% in the last year, but they are up more than 20% since the pandemic. >> keurig will have to pay the government $1.5 million. the company filed for, claiming that its coffee pods were recyclable. the sec says two major recycling firms said they would not take the pods. >> coming up, the debate over homework. are kids getting too much? >> all right. plus one mother's ♪ >> all right. plus one mother's instinct fighting off a hawk
