the racetrack. >> from abc news this is america this morning. >> good friday morning, everyon. i'm rhiannon ally and i'm lionel moise. >> in for andrew. we begin with breaking news. workers at boeing voting to strike overnight, rejecting a new contract offer. >> boeing is a major employer that touches so many corners of the economy, so experts say this strike could cost the u.s. economy billions of dollars. here's abc's andrea fujii overnight. >> it wasn't even close. strike. strike. 96% of union members voting to strike at boeing, the company now bracing for production shutdowns. >> this is about respect. this is about addressing the past. and this is about fighting for our future. >> 33,000 aircraft assembly workers, mainly in seattle, have threatened to walk off the job, rejecting their latest contract deal. boeing offered a 25% pay raise over four years, but workers demanding more, claiming

they haven't had a raise in 16 years. the union's initial demand was for a 40% raise over three years, and a return to pensions instead of 401 k contributions. >> the whole contract is unfair. they're taking too much away from us without giving us anything. >> i kind of, after the last losing our pension, i'm not sure there's at least me personally. there's a lot of trust there with the with the union. >> company officials warning a strike will be a blow to the already struggling company, which in recent years suffered two fatal plane crashes. a door panel flying off a plane mid-flight and a problem plagued spacecraft that was forced to leave astronauts behind at the space station. also this morning, labor unrest in the auto industry. uaw members in detroit protesting possible layoffs by chrysler owned stellantis. >> it's corporate greed, and it's a terrible ceo that has no business running this company. >> are they going to be able to support their families? are they going to be able to buy groceries? >> workers calling out the

company for investing in foreign countries and giving their ceo a $40 million raise. stellantis saying we must continue to adapt by streamlining operations and finding efficiencies that will enhance our competitiveness and ensure our future sustainability and growth. as for boeing, a strike is not expected to cause flight cancellations, but it would stop the production of its best selling planes. depending on how long the strike lasts. it could cost the u.s. economy tens of billions of dollars. rhiannon. lionel. >> all right, andrea, thank you for that. boeing says it is committed to returning to the bargaining table. >> firefighters from as far away as north dakota could soon join the front lines in southern california. as three major wildfires burn out of control. cooler temperatures and calmer winds are expected today. the three major fires have destroyed more than 50 homes, most of them in two small mountain towns, and the man charged with setting one of those fires has now been linked to two others. the so-called lion fire has burned

about 60mi■!s. >> now we turn to the presidential race. president trump is rejecting offers for another debate. meanwhile, he is outlining a new tax plan. vice president harris also talking taxes during a campaign event last night. abc's christiane cordero has details on both. christiane. good morning. >> brianna. good morning. both candidates held their first rallies since the debate. trump at his ruled out a third debate before the election. this morning, both presidential candidates back on the campaign trail. vice president harris holding a rally in pennsylvania today. former president trump holds a fundraiser in los angeles before heading to nevad. trump unveiling a new economic policy in arizona yesterday, vowing to eliminate taxes on overtime pay while harris in north carolina last night doubled down on incentives for small business owners. >> our small business owners, you are business leaders and you are civic leaders. you are community leaders. so i have a plan for you. and my plan is to

give a $50,000 tax deduction for startup businesses. >> a key part of trump's economic plan, imposing broad tariffs on imports. running mate jd vance on cnbc defended the plan after goldman sachs said the tariffs would be a drain on the economy. >> donald trump is a negotiator, he believes in using tariffs for negotiation, but he also does believe in using tariffs to induce more manufacturing and more capital formation in our country. >> trump, also emphasizing the need for border security while amplifying the false claim that haitian immigrants are abducting and eating animals in springfield, ohio. >> they're taking the geese. you know where the geese are? in the park, in the lake, and even walking off with their pets. my dog's been taken. my dog's been stolen. this can only happen. these people are the worst. >> springfield city officials insist there are no credible reports of pets being abducted. and yesterday, with the city in the national limelight, police responded to multiple bomb threats. harris slamming trump's

performance at tuesday's debate. >> it was the same old show, same old, tired playbook we've heard for years with no plan how he would address the needs of the american people. >> the harris campaign said it raised a record $47 million in the 24 hours after the debate. trump says after facing off against biden and harris and claiming victory in both, he's done with debates. >> so because we've done two debates and because they were successful, there will be no third debate. >> meanwhile, the justice department is expected to charge iranian hackers for targeting the trump campaign. officials last month said some of the campaign's internal communications were hacked. lionel. >> all right, christiane, thank you so much for that update. a very close call at nashville's airport when a pilot traveling about 120 miles an hour down the runway had to slam on the brakes to avoid hitting another jet. both planes were packed with passengers. at the time, the emergency stop was so forceful,

the jet's tires overheated and blew out. officials are investigating what's to blame for that near collision. and just this week, two delta planes collided on a runway in atlanta, ripping the tail off one plane. an increase in close calls nationwide recently prompted the faa to boost technology at several airports, and a scare in the sky over south carolina. pieces of a tail cone fell off of a boeing military plane and landed in a school parking lot. the school, just two miles from joint base charleston. military officials are now investigating how the parts fell off. no one was hurt. >> we are learning more about the investigation into actor matthew perry's death. we have an exclusive interview with a family who says they also lost a loved one, allegedly at the hands of the woman known as the ketamine queen of los angeles. this morning, new details about the alleged leaders of a drug ring linked by police to the death of actor matthew perry. investigators say the friends

star was blocked from getting prescriptions for ketamine, so instead he obtained the drug with the help of his personal assistant and multiple doctors. >> as matthew perry's ketamine addiction grew, he wanted more and he wanted it faster and cheaper. >> perry allegedly turned to doctor steven plasencia and jasmine sangha, the so-called ketamine queen of los angeles. both are now charged in the actor's death. my client never met matthew perry has nothing to do with matthew perry. according to the indictment, police found a drug selling emporium at singha's home where she allegedly distributed drugs and now police believe they've uncovered another of her alleged victims. >> growing up, he was very sweet. he had lots of close friendships and, you know, he also liked to have a good time. >> cody mclaury died of an overdose after allegedly buying drugs from singha. his family telling abc's matt gutman they found text messages where cody

and singha discussed pricing. >> is it possible that cody mclaury's death would never have been investigated, had it not been for matthew perry's death? >> it certainly possible, but i will say that we investigate the deaths of many people who are not celebrities. we want to hold drug dealers accountable for the deaths they cause. >> seung-hi and plasencia have pleaded not guilty, and you can see more of matt gutman's exclusive interview on impact by nightline that is streaming now on hulu. >> hurricane francine is no more, but it's left behind significant damage in louisiana after coming ashore as a category two storm with winds of up to 105mph. nearly 500,000 customers in louisiana lost power. the wind tearing the roof off this patio. just look here. francine triggered widespread flooding with up to ten inches of rain, and more is on the way. let's check your friday forecas. >> good morning. as tropical

rainstorm francine no longer producing much wind, still rains a lot of rain into parts of arkansas, western tennessee into missouri. but overall, over the next three days, really through saturday and sunday as well. the residual leftover decaying low pressure system, formerly francine, is going to draw a lot of moisture out of the gulf of mexico in conjunction with flow off the atlantic. we're going to see a lot of very heavy rain here. some parts of georgia near atlanta could see between 4 and 8in of rain. accuweather and jeff cornish for abc news. >> coming up, we are remembering an actor from the karate kid. >> also ahead, some good news about gas prices, how low they could go. >> and later the miami dolphins quarterback suffers. yet another head injury. should he retire

>> well well well, look what we have here, fellas. our little friend danielle, actor, producer and martial artist chad mcqueen has died. >> remembered for his role in the karate kid. the only son of movie legend steve mcqueen was injured in a fall four years ago and never fully recovered. chad mcqueen was 63 years old. >> dozens of aftershocks have followed a magnitude 4.7 earthquake that jolted southern california. it was centered near malibu. it's part of a record year for earthquakes in southern california. this was the 14th. that was a magnitude four or higher this year. and just outside charleston, south carolina, a fast moving train slammed into a big rig stuck at a rail crossing. the driver managed to jump out in time. the impact badly damaged an armored tank that the truck was carrying. fortunately, though, no one was hurt. >> we turn now to the economy and some good news about gas prices. this morning, experts

predict a steady drop in gas prices, putting the national average below $3 a gallon as soon as next month. the national average price for regular stands at 3.24 a gallon, down $0.20 from a month ago. multiple states are now reporting prices under $3. >> gasbuddy now counts 14 states where average gas prices are below the $3 mark. that represents 50,000 stations in the country that are now selling gasoline below the $3 a gallon mark. >> the drop is attributed to multiple factors, including the summer driving season ending, and oil prices have fallen to their lowest level in three years, hitting $65 a barrel this week. gas prices are expected to continue falling through the election, seen as a possible boost for vice president harris. but hurricane season could change the narrative if mother nature does throw a major storm in the gulf of mexico that threatens refineries, we could temporarily see gas prices going up. gas prices remain high in
