oakland, 56 in the city, 61 though in san jose, but cooler in santa rosa. coming in at 50 degrees. look at the inland forecast. it will be lovely today, a little bit warmer than yesterday. so we'll get into the upper 80s lower 90s for daytime highs. lots of sunshine on the way around the bay shoreline. it will feel warm today. just a light breeze. all that sunshine. upper 70s, lower 80s. later on this afternoon. along the coast though. have clouds this mornin. we will get brighter skies this afternoon and highs in the mid 60s. let's check in with amanda and see that traffic forecast. >> yeah good morning drew. very few issues here at the top of the hour which is always good news friday light as we like to call it. you can see that typical slowdown along the altamont pass. and then i do want to take you, if i can, into dublin. we do have some good news here. westbound 580 at san ramon road, an overturned vehicle has actually been cleared out of the left lane. we did see some residual delays, but that has obviously improved tremendously. now that we're seeing green on our map there. now, i do want to get to the

live desk breaking news overnight. tens of thousands of boeing workers have gone on strike. 33,000 workers, mostly in seattle, walked off the job at midnight after rejecting a new contract offer. 96% of them voted in favor of this action, and they say they have not had a raise in 16 years. their initial demand was a 40% raise over three years, plus a return to pensions instead of 401 k contributions. boeing offered a 25% raise over four years. >> the whole contract is unfair. they're taking too much away from us without giving us anything. >> i kind of, after the last losing our pension, i'm not sure there's at least me personally. there's a lot of trust there with that. with the union, boeing says this will be a huge blow to the company that's already struggling. >> this strike is not expected to have any impact on your travel plans. it will, however, stop production of boeing planes and could delay delivery of new

planes to airlines. experts say that could cost the u.s. economy billions of dollars. back to you at the desk, amanda. >> thank you. following now the story on organized retail crime and stronger punishments for those found accountable. governor gavin newsom just signed a new bill into law targeting smash and grab robberies. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez joins us live now. gloria the new law goes into effect january 1st. so what does it do? >> well, first of all, the new law requires prosecutors to start imposing harsher sentences for those who damage or destroy property valued at more than $50,000 while committing a felony. there is a similar law that expired in 2018. california governor gavin newsom signed a bill yesterday bringing back tough criminal penalties targeting large scale stealing schemes and smash and grab robberies. the new law is part of a bipartisan legislative package of about a dozen bills, aiming to crack down on thefts, makes it easier to go after repeat shoplifters and auto thieves. it also increases penalties for those running

professional reselling schemes. last october, 55 cities and counties across california got more than $260 million in retail crime grant funding theft. well, since then, nearly 7000 arrests have been made in cities and counties that got that funding. and that includes nine suspects charged with stealing nearly half $1 million of goods in santa clara county. district attorney jeff rosen says the funding is making a big difference. >> we also then figured out who the fences are, who the people that were reselling these goods. and when you arrest and prosecute the resellers, you really dry up the market for organized retail thieves. >> the new law is supported by the california retailers association association, which says that the new penalties would serve as a deterrent against smash and grabs in retail crime. but opponents, including criminal justice advocates and public defenders, say the new law will put more people behind bars for non retail theft crimes. and that's

because the measure increases prison time for a wide variety of felony charges. live in the studio gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. thank you gloria. >> well, the city of oakland didn't get one of those grants gloria just mentioned because it did not meet the deadline to apply. an audit blamed poor communication between departments. yesterday, opd announced progress in a different crackdown. >> we've heard the community and we have made it make made a concerted effort to address the human trafficking that's taking place along the international corridor. >> police have made multiple arrests in multiple cases involving sex work, human trafficking and homicide. two people are in custody for a murder on august 10th near 12th avenue and international boulevard. police say the victim in that case was killed during a robbery set up by a sex worker. people living in the area have raised concerns in recent months about an increase in sex trafficking. investigators say

they're seeing a direct correlation between sex crimes and robberies. the union that represents oakland's police officers is thanking governor newsom for additional chp officers to patrol the city. the governor has increased shifts to put highway patrol officers on the streets of oakland seven days a week. in a letter earlier this week, opd's the oh, excuse me, opoa president praised the governor and also expressed some frustration with city leadership over cuts to the department. he wrote, quote, unfortunately, elected officials in oakland do not seem to fully grasp the devastation caused to our residents by their unwillingness to fully fund and staff our police department. sadly, your intervention is necessitated by the lack of leadership in our city. today, former president donald trump returning to the bay area for another fundraiser. abc seven news has learned he's going to woodside, and the event is reportedly being held by billionaire tom siebel. to get in, people have to pay anywhere from $3,300 to half $1 million. the former president made a rare

visit to san francisco in june for a fundraiser hosted by david sacks, that one brought in $12 million for his campaign. vice president harris has a campaign stop this morning in pennsylvania. her campaign has been focusing on the swing state for weeks, calling it a, quote, key victory to take the white house. the vice president's campaign stops in north carolina yesterday drew larger audiences. that could be a good sign for harris. the last time a democrat won north carolina was barack obama. in 2008. and don't expect another debate between the former president and vice president, kamala harris. at the end of a lengthy social media post yesterday, trump wrote, quote, there will be no third debate. then, during a campaign event in arizona yesterday, trump claimed he won the debate. >> we won big with independent voters, moderates, republicans and working people all across this nation putting forward a clear vision to very simply make america great again.

>> according to fivethirtyeight, a collection of three national polls and one swing state poll shows on average, 57% of debate watchers nationally think harris turned in the better performance. only 34% said trump did. >> taylor swift's endorsement of vice president harris on tuesday night could end up being a game changer for the harris campaign. it certainly seems to be prompting interest in voting in the 24 hours after swift shared a link to vote dot gov. the website got more than 405,000 visits in the days prior. the site averaged just 30,000 visits a day for a lot of young people there on instagram, they listen to taylor swift's music, but they're not looking for political content. >> they're not tuning in to the debate. but if they're following taylor swift and they see that come across their instagram, they're like, oh, well, now it's reaching them where they are. >> as of thursday, more than 52,000 people registered to vote through the website. more than 25,000 voters requested an

yesterday, state regulators approved the hike, which amounts to about $6 a month. p-g-and-e's says the increase is needed to recoup electricity expenses paid during winter storms in 2022 2023, as well as fire mitigation. the california public utilities commission approved the rate hike in a vote of 4 to 0. >> tsa is proposing another delay to the real id requirement. now, this is just spreading out the enforcement over two years. so that would pushed the final deadline to 2027. tsa said in a report released this week that only 56% of driver's licenses or id cards

are real id compliant. the department of homeland security is concerned that this constant extending makes it less likely for people to feel like they actually need to get this new i. >> now, turning to football and another frightening injury last night for the miami dolphins. star quarterback amanda. it's the third diagnosed concussion of his career so far. >> yeah reggie and tua tagovailoa, the miami dolphins star quarterback, has expressed his concern around his multiple concussions. before last year, he said he considered walking away from football for a time, and last night, tagovailoa suffered another concussion during the third quarter. he stayed on the ground and was attended to by dolphins trainers. tagovailoa eventually walked off the field and into the locker room on his own. the dolphins announced on social media he was ruled out with a concussion. >> furthest thing from my mind is, you know what? what is the timeline? you know, i want to know. i we just need to

evaluate. and, you know, i'm just worried about my teammate, coach mcdaniel told reporters it was too early to decide about putting tagovailoa on the injured reserve list. >> it's a move that would mean he'd miss at least four games. right now, there's no immediate timeline for his return. back to you at the desk. >> thanks, amanda. new developments on the future of the oakland a's. the deal to bring the team west to sacramento next season could be in jeopardy. kfbc news radio in sacramento is reporting that major league baseball hasn't agreed just yet to the upgrades at sutter health park, including the installation of artificial turf. there's some questions about how safe that would be given sacramento gets triple digit heat and the stadium is open air. right now, the a's last game at the oakland coliseum is set for september 26th. >> i'm not convinced to tell you the truth, i'm not convinced that this that this will be the a's last game in the city of oakland. and, you know, i always say, if the a's want to stay in

oakland, we absolutely welcome them back to the negotiation table. >> the a's remain committed to leaving oakland. the team's director of baseball communications released a statement yesterday saying, quote, it is a certainty that the a's will play their 2025 season in sacramento as planned. mlb continues to work productively with the mlbpa on the details of the transition. >> after a year of work and a $1 billion investment, the transformation is complete at san francisco's transamerica pyramid. a lot of people gathered last night for a reopening celebration. the iconic building lit up the san francisco skyline. laser projected images and designs along the building's east facing side, created quite a buzz on the street. the building's new owner pulling out all the bells and whistles to celebrate this extravagant renovation and several new attractions on the property. earlier yesterday, mayor london breed was on hand for the ribbon cutting and reception. the building is now part of the transamerica pyramid center, a historic block that includes a pyramid plus two adjacent buildings. there's the

man has been arrested, accused of assaulting flight attendants on a frontier airlines flight bound for sfo. the incident happened on monday, and according to court paperwork, the 30 year old man tried to choke. one flight attendant pushed another and kicked a different flight attendant about six times in the leg, leaving bruises. the justice department says this all happened after he pulled an oxygen mask from the overhead compartment and started yelling obscenities. the flight was going from john wayne airport in santa to ana sfo. it had to be diverted to ontario international airport in san bernardino county. the suspect faces federal charges of interfering with flight crew members and attendants. this morning, changing weather in southern california is bringing some relief for fire crews trying to contain three devastating wildfires that are still burning out of control. amanda, this cooler weather is going to be very helpful for firefighters. >> yeah. and reggie, that's because those firefighters have been dealing with temperatures as hot as 115 degrees over the past week. now it's getting

cooler, less windy, and in some areas there could even be a little bit of rain. now the largest fire burning right now is the bridge fire. it's burned more than 51,000 acres in los angeles, and san bernardino counties, and is 0% contained. cal fire says 5000 structures are threatened, and it's believed nearly three dozen homes have been destroyed. one resident spoke after losing their home in the fire. >> how are you feeling right now? >> mixed feelings, very overwhelmed. maybe i can start doing some facials and massages again, and. but we have to do it one day at a time. >> the bridge fire has been burning since sunday. there's also the airport fire burning in orange and riverside counties. it's scorched more than 23,000 acres, and a dozen people have been injured. that fire is just 5% contained. and outside reno now, the davis fire is about 56% contained, according to the u.s.

>> first up, ex shutting down at san francisco headquarters today. the company is reportedly notifying employees about two weeks ago that today was the final day that the offices on market street would be open. ex has been here at this location since 2012. ceo elon musk announced earlier this year he planned to relocate x to austin, texas. the new york times reports local workers will be moved to other bay area offices. >> a celebration today for the pride flag flying over the castro district. the san francisco board of supervisors recently gave the flag at harvey milk plaza landmark status. today, a ceremony will be held when mayor breed will sign that legislation. gilbert baker designed the iconic flag in 1978. according to the gilbert baker foundation, harvey milk plaza is the only place in the world with a permanent installation of the flag, a musical tradition back in golden gate park. >> abc seven news captured the setup of the flower piano event. a dozen pianos have been placed around the botanical garden for a list of special shows, or for

oprah. >> is she even going to care about me? is she even going to look me in the eye? and instead, she fell in love with you. she really did. she just like we have. just like we have. honestly, it does not surprise me that oprah winfrey instantly felt connected to you. because it's how all of us feel, o friend. >> and i feel the same way about you. and so that's why this day is just very emotional. and really, it's just it's sad. it's difficult. i mean, i'm moving home to be closer to my family at a time where i really feel like that is important. after my dad passed. but it doesn't make this decision easy because i can still think about my first visit to the bay area. being in san francisco and just driving around and thinking, wow, this is just such a beautiful city. and then driving by. kgo. right here on the embarcadero. i vividly remember looking over and i'm like, wow, that's where kgo is. and how cool would it be if i could work there? and five years ago, both of those dreams came true. so let's get it together, y'all. i feel so blessed to have lived this dream
