6:04 am
that aims to crack down on thefts, and it makes it easier to go after repeat shoplifters and auto thieves, and also increases penalties for those running professional reselling schemes. last october, 55 cities and counties across california got more than $260 million in retail crime grant funding, and since then, nearly 7000 arrests have been made in cities and counties that got the funding. and that includes nine suspects that were charged with stealing, nearly half $1 million of goods in santa clara county. district attorney jeff rosen says the funding is making a big difference. >> we also then figured out who the fences are, who the people that were reselling these goods. and when you arrest and prosecute the resellers, you really dry up the market for organized retail thieves. >> the new law is supported by the california retailers association, which said the new penalties would serve as a deterrent against smash and grabs and retail crime. but opponents say that the new law
6:05 am
will put more people behind bars for non retail theft crimes and that's because the new law also increases prison time for a wide variety of felony charges. live in the studio gloria rodriguez abc seven news. >> thank you. those grants that gloria mentioned, oakland didn't get one. they missed the deadline to apply an audit blamed poor communication between departments. yesterday, opd announced progress in a different crackdown. >> we've heard the community and we have made it make made a concerted effort to address the human trafficking that's taking place along the international corridor. >> police have made arrests in multiple cases involving sex work, human trafficking and homicide. two people are in custody for a murder on august 10th near 12th avenue and international boulevard. police say the victim in that case was killed during a robbery set up by a sex worker. people living in the area have raised concern in recent months about an increase in sex trafficking.
6:06 am
investigators say they are seeing a direct correlation between sex crimes and robberies. >> today, former president trump returns to the bay area for another fundraiser. abc seven news has learned he's going to woodside, and the event is reportedly being hosted by billionaire tom siebel. to get in, it will cost people anywhere from $3,300 to half a million bucks. the former president made a rare visit to san francisco in june for a fundraiser hosted by david sacks. that one brought in $12 million for his campaign. vice president harris has a campaign stop this morning in pennsylvania. her campaign has been focusing on that swing state for weeks, calling it a, quote, key victory to take the white house. the vice president's campaign stops in north carolina yesterday. drew larger audiences, which could be a good sign for her. the last time a democrat won north carolina was barack obama in 2008. don't expect another debate between the former president and vice president, kamala harris. at the end of a lengthy social media post
6:07 am
yesterday, trump wrote, quote, there will be no third debate. then, during a campaign event in arizona yesterday, trump claimed that he won the debate. >> we won big with independent voters, moderates, republicans and working people all across this nation putting forward a clear vision to very simply make america great again. >> according to fivethirtyeight, a collection of three national polls and one swing state poll, it shows on average, 57% of debate watchers nationally think harris turned in the better performance and only 34% said that trump did. we're less than two months away to election day for information about the candidates, the polls and how to register to vote, go to abc seven news.com/election. bookmark that page now and you'll have one place for all the latest information as we head into election day. >> 607 this morning, the accuweather forecast. we'll show you the big picture. we have this area of high pressure which

6:13 am
production of boeing planes and could delay delivery of new planes to airlines. experts say that could cost the u.s. economy billions of dollars. back to you at the desk. >> thanks, amanda. for the fourth time this year. p-g-and-e's rates are going up. yesterday, state regulators approved that hike, which amounts to about $6 a month. p-g-and-e's says the increase is needed to recoup electricity expenses paid during winter storms in 20 2223, as well as fire mitigation. the california public utilities commission approved this rate unanimously 4 to 0. we've been warning you all week. some of us have been in denial ourselves, but we have reached that day. friends, it is friday the 13th. kumasi last day here at abc seven mornings and at abc seven news. so we are honoring here all morning. and right now we're going to take a look back at a few moments from kumasi five years here in the bay area. i never used to notice the little things

the bay area so memorable, as have all of you. like, i feel so blessed to be in the bay area because you all are the best. really like when i see you out and about. it's all love, it's all encouragement, it's all support. especially after i shared that i was leaving and you know, just things going on with my dad and my family. i can't tell you how much that's meant to me to know that you all you know are here for me. and so i just feel so blessed. i do feel extremely sad to be leaving my community, but i feel so blessed that we've built the connection that we have over the last five years. it's been great, if i may say, i think that one of your greatest legacies, being here at abc7, is the work that you did during the height of the covid crisis, during 2020 and 2021, when we were all separated. >> but you were holding it down here at the studio. you were the only one. i don't know if everyone understands that, but kumasi was the only anchor for us in the mornings here in the studio. i think about that. >> i was like, what is a work from home? i don't know that. i don't know what that is. you

really don't. i worked from the studio, but i appreciated that because first of all, if stuff broke, i would just be like, well, it's broke. sorry, you won't see me today, but, it gave me a sense of normalcy just to be here. and i felt like that really let me know that what we had was real because we were in boxes. but it could have been like we were still, like, together. and that let me know. like our connection, our relationship, our friendship. it doesn't matter if we're in the same place because what we have is what we have. >> and i think that that was the message. it was unsaid. but over a period of months, you were able to give people a sense of comfort that everything was going to be okay. we don't know where it's going and we don't really know what tomorrow will bring, but it will be okay. and you have that reassuring presence. and i think that you holding down the fort here was extremely important to a lot of people, including us, as being a part of this team and seeing like, well, she looks normal over there. >> it's fine. she's going in
6:18 am
there. we'll be okay. it's still there. like we'll be okay. >> my prompter is going down. drew's signal is out. >> honestly, i couldn't take it. >> kumasi is going to. >> going to soldier on. i'll take it. >> go ahead and that's. >> so i want to say thank you for that. >> oh, thank you friends. i just feel so, so grateful for all of you for this station, for the opportunity to do something that was really just a dream when i was driving along the embarcadero, i had a story here i was covering ghost ship with my previous station, and so we were just driving here in san francisco, and my photographer was like, there's kgo. and i was like, oh my gosh. and i'm like, oh, how cool would it be to work there? you know? and for this to happen and for it to happen with all of you, i just can't. i can't ask for anything better, i really can't. >> you did that. yeah >> and she left. >> not yet though. no not yet. please don't. please only i still need. i still have 41 minutes of kumasi time left. yes. we don't throw around the word, friend. we don't easily. i

love that you all show me when i see you out and about has meant so much to me, especially after i shared that i am going to be leaving to go spend time with my family after my father's passing. just the support that you've extended to me has really meant so, so, so much. i just feel so lucky to be able to be a part of your mornings, to start the day with you all, and really just to be here in this role. it's something that i definitely do not take for granted. and i think about all the women journalists specifically women of color, who have come before me to open this door, that i'm able to sit here and do this, sacrifices they made to pave the way for me to make it possible. women like carolyn tyler, who really just opened her heart to me, the moment i got here to the bay area, that means so much. so i'm so proud to continue that legacy, and i'm thankful for our managers here at abc seven who really have given me the space to be myself from how i wear my
