an absolutely chaotic scene in the heart of san francisco today. as police shoot a suspect who was allegedly carrying a gun. good evening. i'm ama daetz. where this all happened is of particular concern. the shooting itself was at the powell street bart station. if you're familiar with the area, this is right near where people catch the cable car. and one look at some of the video and you can see just how crowded the area was at the time. abc seven news reporter tara campbell has what people saw and the response coming from city hall. oh my god

>> the sounds of gunshots ringing through the powell street bart station friday morning. san francisco police officers pursuing a man they say was sitting inside a reported stolen vehicle armed with a gun. >> they observed this armed person because of proactive police work, and they took the appropriate action in terms of engaging with this person. >> this video posted to social media showing the suspect walking towards the bart powell street station officers demanding he stop, then chasing him down. that's when you can hear multiple gunshots. the encounter sending tourists running and witnesses shaken, including those working nearby. >> i was turning to do a coffee to make a coffee, and then i heard the gunshot. everybody. i told them to go to the back door. >> sfpd confirming at least two of its officers were involved in

the shooting, and that it's still unclear who shot first. >> again, you know, this city is we're on the upswing. we want to make sure that, you know, we try to prevent these types of things from happening. but our officers are deployed to prevent crime. and when we see somebody armed with a gun, you know, we want to get that person in custody before they hurt somebody or commit some other violent crime with that firearm. >> when asked for a comment, mayor london breed's office responded with this statement, reading in part. while crime is at a ten year low across the city, there's so much more to be done, and mayor london breed will not let up on her efforts to continue to make san francisco safe for residents, business owners and visitors. >> people don't want to hear crime is down in san francisco city supervisor and mayoral candidate asha safai speaking at the scene this morning. we can tell them crime is down all day long, but within a two week period, this is the second shooting that happened. this is brazen crime. we have families living here. we have everyday working front line workers in

san francisco, and this is what they're experiencing. >> sfpd says it will hold a town hall meeting about the shooting within ten days. meanwhile because police were involved in the shooting, the investigation now gets handed over to the city's district attorney, tara campbell. abc seven news. >> meanwhile, the 49 ricky pearsall continues to recover after getting shot during an attempted robbery in union square. now, almost two weeks ago, the wide receiver has resumed working out and has been around the team locker room in recent days. 40 niners coach kyle shanahan gave us this update today. >> i mean, i think it surprisingly heals a lot faster than you would think. you know, you rip when you tear your chest and stuff, you're out for the year. but that's a bullet hole that goes through your chest and out the back for some reason heals a lot faster. so it's, you learn a lot about that stuff, but yeah, we're expecting him. you know, it's week to week, so i don't really know when, but he's traveling with us today and it's been a good step this week getting him back in the workout weight room.

>> pearsall will miss the first four games of the season. new details on yesterday's deadly shooting in orinda. the victim has been identified as 50 year old scott decker. investigators say he was a resident of orinda as well as truckee. we're told he was in a toyota forerunner when a man driving a tesla shot him. the contra costa county sheriff's office says that man was detained but has since been released. they have not said what led to the shooting or if any charges will be filed. san francisco is eyeing sweeping new restrictions on recreational vehicles, the latest step in the city's effort to curb homelessness. under the proposa, sfmta plans to ban rvs from parking on all city managed streets between the hours of midnight and 6 a.m. that includes travel trailers and mobile homes. the ban would give sfmta clearance to tow oversize vehicles that are in violation. the agency's board of directors has to pass the proposal before it would take effect. in the north bay, the last illegal boats on waldo point near sausalito have been relocated. in 2021, the richardson bay regional agency reached an agreement with the san francisco

bay conservation and development commission to have all illegally anchored vessels removed by october 2026. conservationists say the anchors of the small boats damaged eelgrass, a sensitive and vital food source for migratory shorebirds. all right, let's take a live look outside tonight. the fog started to roll in, but there are bigger changes on way for the weekend. meteorologist sandhya patel joins us now. might we get some rain? sandhya? >> yes. september showers may be greeting us. ama. i do want to show you right now the changes that are underway. it's very subtle. we're seeing the fog just kind of sucking in the golden gate bridge. but the changes are not going to be that subtle. come this weekend, we have some big pattern changes coming. it's an area of low pressure that is developing. it is going to drop down and you will notice it on sunday as the winds kick up. and also the temperatures drop well below average now. also sunday night into monday we have an opportunity for some wet weather here in the bay area. certainly is going to bring much needed

rain to parts of california where the fires are burning around the state, so that is good news. humidity will go up. here comes the winds. they ramp up on sunday over 30 miles an hour, nearing 35 at lower elevations, even stronger at higher elevations. and you look at sunday's temperatures, i mea, 60s and 70s, that's not going to feel like summer, that's for sure. and believe it or not, it's almost going to feel like winter in the sierra when you have winter weather advisory going up 11 p.m. sunday until 5 p.m. monday. up to four inches of snow above 8000ft with gusty winds. certainly will have to prepare for winter driving conditions if you're going to that part of the sierra. i'm going to be back with a full look at the rainfall timeline coming right up. all right. >> look forward to that. thank you. sandhya. former president donald trump was in the bay area today to raise money for his campaign along the peninsula. our abc seven team saw his motorcade as it rolled up to the event in woodside. you're seeing that there? dozens of trump supporters lined the streets, along with a small group of democratic supporters. >> we are being hoodwinked and

economy. when we talk about bringing down prices and making life more affordable for people, what are 1 or 2 specific things you have in mind for that? >> and creating opportunity for people, for example, to start a small business. so my opportunity economy plan includes giving startups a $50,000 tax deduction to start their small business. it used to be $5,000. nobody can start a small business with $5,000. >> harris also touted the plan to incentivize the construction of 3 million new homes across america, and tax credits of up to $25,000 to help first time home buyers afford them. on crime and guns specifically, i want to talk about your values on this issue when it comes to gun ownership, where do you draw the line in america on gun ownership and gun use? >> brian, i am a gun owner and tim walz, my running mate, is also a gun owner. we're not taking anybody's guns away. i support the second amendment and

tell the difference from one day to the other. so part of what we need to do, and it's included in the findings and the recommendations, is all of our communities need to learn that information. >> the report also said decades old infrastructure standards and insufficient communications were key factors in the fire destruction. a bay area girls softball league may find itself without a home to hold its games while it's in peril, and the effort to save it, and an ominous letter from the oakland school district. the warning sent out to parents this week. sam bankman-fried was sent to prison in one of the biggest fraud cases in history. what he's arguing in an appeal to get his conviction overturned when abc seven ne

he might not have a place to play. here's abc seven news reporter lauren martinez. >> save newark girls softball is the message these young athletes and their families are sharing. for decades, the league has been using fields at h.r. snow elementary school since the school was shut down two years ago. the league has continued to use the site, but earlier this week, league administrator andrew patrick was informed by the district they can no longer play on the fields. >> the main reason is that it's too much of a liability to allow the public use of this school, when there's not supposed to be anybody here. >> the news means they have no place to play for the 2025 spring season, and registration is supposed to be starting now. the district has overseen cutting the grass, but the league has been in charge of infield maintenance. all that

work will now stay with these fields. >> so the option that they gave us on tuesday via email was that there's some space at another school in town. unfortunately, the quote that they gave us was $500,000. >> on friday evening, the district sent abc seven news this statement. the district has identified alternative shared land space at another school site. however, neither the district nor the league has the funds to build new softball fields. we remain committed to finding a solution, working with our families and community. >> there's other sports organizations in the city that are using the fields as well, and not that we're trying to take anything away from them, but we feel that there should be space for a league that's been empowering girls for so long. >> newark girls softball league has been in the community for nearly 50 years. stephanie ordorika enrolled her daughter three years ago. >> i think that she's become more confident. she has so many friends and even ourselves as parents. we've you know, we are

a community and we're all friends outside of softball. >> during the newark city council meeting on thursday, andrew patrick spoke during public comment asking for help. >> we hear you loud and clear. >> now the city and the district plan to meet with the league on the 24th to discuss options. in newark. lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> the superintendent of oakland schools is notifying families of a huge budget deficit that could prevent ousd from paying teachers. the letter is titled money disaster. superintendent kyla johnson trammell says oakland unified will face a $79 million budget deficit by the end of the current school year. that deficit is expected to grow so large that by 2027, the district may not be able to meet payroll or pay for other basic services. the superintendent blames falling enrollment, fewer funds coming in from the state and pay increases to district employees. lawyers for sam bankman-fried filed an appeal today in an attempt to reverse his conviction. the founder of the bankrupt crypto exchange ftx

is currently serving a 25 year prison sentence for stealing billions of dollars from his customers. in their appeal, his lawyers say he was presumed guilty by the public and the judge before the trial even started. the u.s. attorney's office declined to comment. city leaders are preserving an important piece of queer history in san francisco. mayor london breed is officially declaring the rainbow pride flag above the castro district, a city landmark. today, a new flag was raised, as is done every few months to keep it looking fresh. the event had a special focus on gilbert baker, who created the original rainbow flag in the 1970s and petitioned for it to fly above the castro. he sat down with abc seven news in 2017 to talk about the flag's creation, and what would be the last interview before his death. >> pink is for sex, and red for life and orange for healing. yellow for sun, green for nature, turquoise for magic, blue for serenity, and purple for the spirit. >> the new landmark status

food, live music and performances celebrating mexican culture and traditions. el grito. a reenactment of mexico's historic call for independence is scheduled to perform at 7:30 p.m. mexican independence day is actually on monday. tonight in san francisco, another bhangra and beats night market activated the downtown streets. it's a part of a revival effort set in motion by the mayor. this is meant to celebrate south asian culture and the diversity of the bay area. musical performances got people of all ages and backgrounds dancing together on battery and clay streets in the financial district. i think we indians, we really love our culture and bhangra beats, celebrates indian culture a lot and there are so many stalls and good food, so i think that's what i love about this festival. >> i think we are away from our country, so this is the only thing that has that makes us remember our country and our culture and everything that we celebrate. >> this was the third out of four events of this market series. the final one will be on
