8:00 pm
>> greg: jalon walker just goes around the line. that's the speed rush that gave kentucky so many fits against south carolina. walker, one of the most explosive edge defenders in the pass rush in the s.e.c., delivers another big hit. that's four or five he's had against brock vandagriff. >> sean: he's been after him with regularly in the fourth quarter, especially. 3:03 to go, eight yards to go, wilson berry is on. there's a smattering of boos from the crowd. fourth punt for berry. anthony evans back deep. there's a flag down. whistle stops the play.
8:01 pm
>> referee: prior to the snap, false start kicking team. five-yard penalty. still fourth down. reset the game clock to 3:03. >> sean: line of scrimmage now, kentucky's 48. evans, fair catch, just inside the 15. time for tonight's sonic drive-in recap. >> greg: the last couple of drives for georgia starting to figure it out along the offensive line. the running game. they lean on trevor etienne, the transfer from florida. get it to him between the tackles, out in the flat. see what he does with it. he's excellent with the ball
8:02 pm
after the catch. almost tightropes the sideline before giving way to branson robinson who pays it off with the only touchdown. the offensive line struggling the first three quarters has settled in in the fourth quarter against the kentucky defensive line and the offense has rhythm as a result. >> sean: still just 202 total yards for number one georgia. nate frazier, stacked up. mark stoops will use his first time-out, clock still running. several seconds ran off. jordan lovett up from the secondary. next week our primetime matchup on s.e.c. network is 7:45, georgia southern, number five ole miss. ole miss, 3-0.
8:03 pm
40-6 today. download the espn app or go to espn.com/schedule to watch all the action. if you're georgia, how do you play it? >> greg: continue to lean on the run game. they've done a pretty good job running between the tackles, but might get to the outside a little bit more. really athletic running backs and the defensive line of kentucky know they'll try to run. they'll be stout between the tackles. 350 all-american in deone walker. so maybe try outside the tackles and use your athleticism to your advantage. >> sean: second and nine. georgia at its own 16. trevor etienne, the running back.
8:04 pm
they play fake it to him. down it goes! dominic lovett, out-of-bounds with a big first down for georgia, all the way to the 49. great call by mike bobo, and well executed for 36. >> greg: thing of beauty. kentucky selling out against the run. all eyes in the backfield. get lovett in the slot, slow developing play action, little bit of misdirection as well. he breaks to the out. that's how much trust kirby smart has in his starting quarterback to put the ball in his hands backed up and run your way to victory, he lets him unleash, big play. >> sean: huge play. one-yard gain to the 50. mark stoops electing not to use the time-out, going to let it go down to the two-minute stoppage.
8:05 pm

8:08 pm
>> sean: back at kroger field in lexington, kentucky. number one georgia leading kentucky 13-12. two-minute time-out of the fourth quarter. the dogs looking at second and eight from midfield. kentucky has two time-outs left. one more georgia first down should just about put it trevor etienne the running back. carson beck, 14 for 23, 152. big 33-yard completion a moment ago to dom lovett. play fake, oscar delp, and the ball came out. looked like it came out when he hit the ground. that's the ruling.
8:09 pm
but also looks like he went down short of the first down. third down and one. >> greg: that ball did look like it might have been coming out before. but lucky for georgia, arian smith right there to hop on it. >> sean: they got it back anyway. you're right, it's coming out. >> greg: no question. >> sean: should have been a fumble. but arian smith recovered. it's actually a break for kentucky. because if it was a fumble -- kirby smart is getting after his crew. this is a big review coming because it looked like to me on the first look, where arian smith recovered, they might have first down. >> greg: looks like the ball squeaks out. falls forward a little bit, where arian smith can recover it. >> sean: he's along the 40 yard
8:10 pm
line. progressive pylon cam. our expert, matt austin. what do you think? >> matt: i agree with everything you said, sean, looks like the ball was out before the runner was down. and it did trickle beyond the line to gain. should have been first down georgia. >> sean: enormous break for kirby smart. real battle with one of his close friends, kirby smart and mark stoops are buddies, their wives are friendly. generally sit next to each other at s.e.c. coaches meetings, been on apparel company trips. and they've had a lot of laughs when they met on the field before the game. >> referee: after video review, the football was fumbled, recovered by the offense for a first down. first down georgia.
8:11 pm
kentucky retains the time-out they called. >> greg: couple of things to consider here. not quite at that point, but clock management possibilities here. if you're georgia, last thing you want to do here is score a touchdown. if you score a touchdown, that gives the ball back to kentucky with the possibility of being down eight points in a one-possession game. if they break free you slide down and kneel on it, extinguish the clock. kentucky is starting to think, do we let them score at this point because it's the only way to get the ball back and give our offense a chance. div different philosophies. >> sean: still two time-outs. >> greg: i don't think you're there yet, but could arise for both sides of the ball.
8:12 pm
>> sean: georgia has not turned the ball over this year. it was close a moment ago. it is a first and etienne. stopped after a short gain. time-out kentucky. 1:15 to go. pickup of three. life's so hard in the s.e.c. mark stoops, here right now. we saw earlier today, south carolina, led for most of the game against lsu. some self-inflicted mistakes were really costly to the game cocks, blew a 17-0 lead. the margin is so fine trying to pull off a big upset like this. >> greg: it's so difficult to go on the road in this league. host hostile environments, challenges with communication, momentum
8:13 pm
swings that are so but beating teams like alabama, georgia, texas, you have to be flawless and hope they're a touch off. georgia was a little bit off tonight, but kentucky's had a couple mistakes that could have been capitalized upon had they made the plays. situation at the end of the game might look different. >> sean: second and seven. beck under center. they sell out on the run, the cats. trevor etienne turned the corner, first down but there is a flag. that would have been ball game over, and it will be if that play stands. he had a first down inside the 30.
8:14 pm
kentucky crowding the trevor etienne had rothe ball. >> referee: illegal push in the back. >> greg: arian smith, down the line of scrimmage, does look like he gets the defender in the back and finishes through it. good job by the official, wiping out the big gain. >> sean: second and 15. there's people on headsets getting worn out by coach smart tonight. >> greg: he's got to be frustrated. delp on the deck in a fumble, penalties. they can put the game on ice but they had self-inflicted mistakes. >> sean: can't imagine they'll throw and risk incompletion. beck on the keeper, dives down at the 40 yard line.
8:15 pm
gain of six, 1:02 to go. final time-out used by kentucky. and beck grimacing as he gets up. leaning a little to his left. >> greg: it's concerning, how gingerly he's walking. didn't see anything initially. didn't land awkwardly -- he lands a little bit, elbow to the turf. way he was leaned over to his side made you wonder if lower body, upper body. might be the left arm that landed a little bit awkwardly in the turf as he went to the ground. >> sean: would you risk a pass here that might stop the clock or do you run it and let the clock go under 30 seconds? >> greg: i lean conservative.
8:16 pm
the defense has played well throughout the game. eliminating big plays. you have a chance to pin it with 25 seconds left. i run it. don't risk it. >> sean: i agree. if you have to punt it, punt it. the way kentucky plays offense, they have to go a long way to get in range with almost no time. trevor etienne the running beck communicating with everything. play clock down to seven. on the delay, etienne, stacked up, one minute to go at the 35. now the other option would be a long field goal try. i don't know if you want to risk that, even though woodring is outstanding, would be about a
8:17 pm
52-yard kick. they're lining up quickly. don't want to snap quickly but take the play clock all the way down. >> greg: maybe try to get them to jump offside, but there's no way they're going to snap here. >> sean: deone walker looking at beck like we're not going to fall for that. >> greg: i suppose it's worth a try. >> sean: they use the time-out. now what do you do? if you punt, wouldn't gain a lot, but if you go for it here, and you turn it over. vandagriff's one completion away from field goal range. >> greg: i don't like that. four-point game, it's a little bit different scenario, might try the field goal. i might have taken the delay of game, given my punter more room,
8:18 pm
max protect punt. if you're kentucky, you're coming after this punt. last thing you want, you know this better than most, better than all perhaps outside of jim harbaugh -- >> sean: whoa. >> greg: you dumas-johnson here. even a touchback doesn't kill you. but in a perfect world, launch as high as you can, take as much time off as humanly possible. >> sean: beck and the offense are coming back out. wonder if they're guying to take one more crack to get kentucky to jump offside. vandagriff hoping for one last shot at pulling off what would be just about a miracle against his former team. they're lining up as if they're going to go for
8:19 pm
fourth and four at the 35. georgia leading by one with 18 seconds to go, kentucky out of time-outs. they're trying to draw them kentucky defenders again looking at beck, we're not going for that this time either. >> greg: wonder if they take the delay of game as opposed to time-out? >> sean: worth a try. >> referee: five-yard penalty. >> sean: kentucky did jump offside in a critical time last week against south carolina. now thorson. going to punt for the sixth time, a career high. running joke within their program about how infrequently he punts. 32 times last year, 36 two years
8:20 pm
ago, the two lowest punt totals in georgia history, dating back to at least 1948. not so funny i tonight when you have to punt six times. ja'mori maclin back at his own 9. he gets the punt off, no trouble. wobbling punt, and were they able to keep it out of the end zone? i believe it's a touchback. if so, that whistle was a little slow in comingment wonder if they would put a second or two back on the clock. thorson in agony. dominic lovett, one of the two great gunners along with arian smith down there, but they couldn't stop it. nine seconds. no time-outs. >> greg: work the middle of the
8:21 pm
field but has to be beyond the sticks. telling everybody now, any first down, clock situation, spike the ball, get up immediately. but first acknowledge your protection. jalon walker, number 11, has been a real problem throughout the course of this game. that's what pass rushers -- why they get paid millions of dollars, they end games. they put the game on ice. keep a close eye on the matchup, whoever they line jalon walker against, keep an eye on him. he's a huge problem. >> sean: they put one second back on the clock. could be meaningful. they take the second back off. i don't know how that happened.
8:22 pm
>> greg: walker lined up over the right guard. he's the guy to watch in this situation. >> sean: vandagriff steps into the pocket, walker is right there. he got it off for a first down to jordan dingle. and the clock runs out. that one second could have been huge. >> greg: i think they're going to look at this. looked like he was down with one, two seconds left. clock obviously stops with the first down. >> referee: clock to two seconds. >> sean: >> greg: better get lined up and spike immediately. >> sean: just going to snap as
8:23 pm
soon as they're ready. >> greg: good now. >> sean: one last play. another stoppage. >> referee: previous play under review. >> sean: gee. >> greg: steps up, walker makes the play. exactly how much time is left? dingle goes to the ground. >> sean: three seconds when he hits the ground. >> greg: even as offense, saying we're going on whistle. on one, two. on the whistle, snaps as soon as you hear it. one play left. does give you the benefit to get lined up to run your hail mary play, what most call big ben. big clock. run the may and start the pitch
8:24 pm
circus, could happen with three left. >> referee: three seconds left after review. >> sean: they better get ready. he's telling him to spike it. then they can take their time and run the one last play. barring a penalty on the defense. no time came off the clock. >> referee: reset the game clock to two seconds, it did not run on that play. >> sean: one last play, barring
8:25 pm
a penalty on the defense. vandagriff, they try the laterals, but malaki starks is there to drop jordan dingle, and game over. the georgia bulldogs have won 42 straight regular season games. second longest streak of all time. they win their 28th in a row in conference play moving out of a tie with some alabama teams in the '70s. molly has kirby. >> molly: coach, kentucky and brock vandagriff had the ball with seconds to spare, how much confidence and trust did you have in your defense? >> a lot. they have a good team. when you play on the road in the s.e.c., people don't respect that. i'm not sure our guys listened to the message. this is a good football team.
8:26 pm
you don't judge s.e.c. teams on one week. we did what we had to do, but didn't play well. >> molly: you said the first road test would tell you who you are. what did you learn? >> we're resilient. two years ago, missouri, almost lose on the road. auburn last year, first game on the road, almost lost that game. got to find ways to win these and we did. best news is, we can wake these guys up and get better. number one thing we got to do, get better. >> molly: you had a hard time moving the ball on offense. what mental toughness did you see from carson beck and the offense? >> it wasn't about carson beck tonight. little bit about kentucky playing physical, doing a good job. they came after us really aggressive. we've got to have answers for that. but in the end our offense did pretty good when they had to. got first downs and ate a lot of the clock. i was proud of them for that. >> molly: congrats on the win. >> thank you.
8:27 pm
>> sean: they have a week off to solve some of the issues that kirby referenced. then alabama, primetime on abc, two weeks from tonight, and trips to texas and ole miss. and they extend all the streaks, 42 straight regular season wins, 28 in a row as we said in conference, 16 in true road games, longest active streak in the country. 15 wins against kentucky, longest streak ever against an s.e.c. foe. all that said, pollsters go to cast their vote, does texas jump over them? >> greg: probably going to be a strong overreaction to this. and nobody will be happier texas jumps them than kirby smart. he will be able to say to his team they're doubting you now. people think you're not the best team in the country, basically giving them the energy they might need throughout the
8:28 pm
bye-week to galvanize the team off a somewhat lackluster performance. >> sean: last year carson beck against kentucky stepped on the national stage. it's a lot harder tonight against a spirited kentucky defense. >> molly: that's right. carson, kentucky didn't make it easy. what did you learn about your team? >> the theme was blow by blow. how do you keep the motor going and keep going the entire game. looked at their game against south carolina, their defense. tough. their front seven challenge you and played a phenomenal game. i'm proud of our guys, our defense for holding them out of the end zone, and us getting the touchdown drive to take the lead and run the clock out end of the game. >> molly: you landed aw and what happened there. >> i'll be fine.
8:29 pm
>> molly: luckily you have a bye and can get ready for alabama. >> thank got we have a bye. all i can say. we knew this would be physical. utmost respect for them. first road game is a hard test. we talked about it early in the week, first road games past two years have been like this. we expected to be blow by blow and get the win. i'm proud of the guys. >> molly: congrats on the win. >> thanks so much. >> sean: when it was over, kirby smart, big hug for brock vandagriff. said i love that young man, kind of guy you want your daughter to marry. he was gutty, his team a little bit overmatched in the final analysis from a talent standpoint. final score, georgia 13, kentucky 12. for greg mcelroy, molly mcgrath and our great crew led by phil dean, and the birthday boy,
8:30 pm
scott johnson, we won't say how many, but medicare is a factor. good night from lexington. >> announcer: thank you for watching this presentation of the s.e.c. on abc. but do they really? do they see all that you are? at kaiser permanente all of us work together to care for all that is you.
