president is safe tonight after what the fbi is calling an attempted assassination that ended with secret service agents shooting at a suspect. good evening, and thank you for joining us. i'm dion lim. law enforcement in florida arrested a man they say pointed an assault style rifle at the former president from a few hundred yards away. as trump was golfing. sources tell abc news investigators are looking into whether that suspect was angry over trump's positions on ukraine. abc news reporter alison kosik leads off our team coverage for the second time in two months. >> an attempted assassination of former president trump. law enforcement says a suspect in custody that suspect identified as ryan wesley ralph. sources say a man with an assault style rifle was between 3 to 500 yards from the former president, and appeared to be aiming a gun near him. >> they have an agent that jumps one hole ahead of time to where

the president was at, and he was able to spot this rifle barrel sticking out of the fence and immediately engage that individual, at which time the individual took off. >> authorities say they found an ak 47 style rifle in the bushes with a scope, two backpacks and a gopro. he was later apprehended in a neighboring county. the threat level is high. >> we have increased the amount of assets that we've supported. so we are, we live in danger times. >> the former president issuing a statement saying my resolve is only stronger after another attempt on my life. i will never slow down. i will never give up. later in the evening, president biden, issuing a statement stating there is no place for political violence or for any violence ever in our country. the former president is said to be in good spirits. alison kosik, abc news, new york. >> vice president kamala harris

shared a statement tonight saying she is deeply disturbed by the possible assassination attempt. she wrote, quote, i condemn political violence. we all must do our part to ensure that this incident does not lead to more violence, unlike the shooting at trump's rally in july, his presence at the golf course today wasn't planned or announced ahead of time. the secret service has made security changes to the course since the first attempt on trump's life. abc seven news reporter tara campbell turned to experts on politics and protecting presidents. to put this shocking incident into context. >> donald trump being whisked away sunday after an assassination attempt at his florida golf club. >> never a dull moment in election 2020 for this, the second time in two months, there's been an apparent attempt on the former president's life. the unprecedented ness of it is more that it's about somebody trying to take somebody out before the election happens, whereas usually when we see these kinds of high level assassination attempts, it's about somebody who's already in office.

>> and political science professor melissa michaelson says not only is it unprecedented. >> also a sad commentary on the degree to which we are so polarized that people are so invested in the outcome of this election, are so angry about one of the people running that they think it might be appropriate to try to assassinate that person. >> secret service officials sunday, describing the agents actions, he noticed that the rifle was pointed out. >> our agents engaged. we are not sure right now if the individual was able to take a shot at our agents. >> kudos to them for preventing a tragedy upon the former president or anybody else involved. >> corey allen is a former secret service agent and says they did exactly what they are trained to do. >> the secret service agents who were out there on the golf course with them were doing their jobs and did it really well, to the point of spotting something. what many others wouldn't see would be a part of a rifle barrel sticking out of a fence. >> and he says trump is

now. it feels cooler than it actually is. sort of a wind chill factor. let me show you the wind gusts as we speak. 47 mile per hour gusts right now in oakland, 43 mile per hour gusts at sfo and all around the bay area. we have wind speeds ranging from 25mph to over 40mph. the current temperatures are generally in the mid to upper 50s, which is chilly but not cold, but with the winds blowing so furiously out there it feels even chillier. so let me give you a look at our forecast headlines. first, overnight breezy, light rain and drizzle will develop during the overnight hours and into the early morning hours. so morning commuters may encounter a few damp spots on the roadways. now tomorrow we'll have some showers in the morning, but then a mix of clouds and sun going into the afternoon and the remainder of the week will be unsettled for the first few days. then turning at the end of the week. so i'll have details on all of this in my accuweather seven day forecast. a little bit later on. >> all right. looking forward to it. spencer. thanks. firefighters in the north bay stopped the spread of a new

wildfire that was sparked today. the cougar fire started off of lakeville highway and quickly spread to 40 acres, all driven by wind. cal fire used its new air tanker to do a fire retardant drop over the burn zone. its first drop in sonoma county. the new plane has capacity for 4000 gallons of retardant and has a cruising speed of 360 miles an hour. it is a turbulent time for the future of our schools, with shrinking enrollment, hurting school budgets. multiple school districts in our area are talking about school closures. to close the gaps. leaders with san francisco unified are putting off a highly anticipated announcement this week, of which schools may be on the chopping block. abc7 news reporter j.r. stone talked to families frustrated with more than just the wait. >> this is the email message that went out on sunday from the san francisco unified school district superintendent revised timeline for school closures announcement, meaning that three days before district officials said they would release a list

of recommended school closures for next school year, they have opted to delay that release for another month. >> there's a lot of families with anxiety around, oh my schools under-enrolled my school is going to be on the list and just kind of anticipating this date and now all of a sudden the state is getting pushed back and the timeline is a little unclear and people don't know exactly why. and so there's, you know, families are rightfully concerned and upset that you know, wondering what's going on. >> that's meredith dodson, who represents the san francisco parent coalition, a group of more than 1,000 usd parents, in the email. superintendent matt wayne said the delay is, quote, to ensure a thorough review of all aspects of the plan. end quote. some we talked with understand the need for thoroughness, but also say there should be urgency here. >> if this is something that's going to happen, then yes, let's let's be sure. >> let's be sure about it and let's get the list out and let everybody know so they can

prepare. it is frustrating, but i'm not surprised that from a man whose family recently opted out of san francisco unified schools due to the way things were being run. >> two of my grandchildren were at the neighborhood school and things were getting so frustrated that their parents pulled them out to send them to the catholic school, sfusd superintendent wayne says the rest of the timeline remains relatively consistent, saying there will be a board of education vote on the package of school closures in december, and changes will still take place next fall. >> dodson is hopeful the district will be prepared for what will come after the release of the list. >> the families are going to have, you know, dozens of questions, you know, will they be moved to a school nearby? will their kids be kept with their friends? right. like, these are really important questions that the district has to be ready to answer on day one. and i don't know if they're ready to answer that. and i think that's part of what's happening here. >> we did reach out to the

district for further comment, but hadn't heard back from them as of late sunday night. j.r stone, abc seven news. >> tense moments as firefighters race to save one person and two cats from a high rise on fire. gasps from the street as a cat scrambles onto a ledge. what first responders did next. with nine lives on the line and the biggest night in television, filled with laughs and tears and a whole lot of history. we've got the postgame reactions from hollywood's biggest stars, and a little bit later in sports, the 40 niners looking for a win that has eluded them for more than 30 years.

of the brothers who made up the beloved pop group has died. his sons shared the news on instagram tonight. tito was the third of nine jackson children, brother to michael and janet. he was a background singer who played guitar in the jackson five's chart topping hits of the 70s. his sons didn't share the cause of death, just saying we love you, pops. tito jackson was 70 years old. well, it is the biggest night in television happening right here on abc seven. the 76th emmy awards made history from the very start. reporter george pennacchio with our sister station in los angeles. reports from the red carpet. >> shogun. >> shogun started emmy night with 14 wins, all from last week's creative arts emmys. the drama series added four more for a total of 18 trophies, from a staggering 25 nominations, the most of any show this year. the series stars and new emmy

about to begin, and they may impact your morning commute. starting tomorrow night at ten. caltrans will close lanes on i-80 between fourth and seventh streets, affecting the fourth and harrison street exits. one lane will be open in both directions. while that work is underway, and all lanes will reopen at 6 a.m. this work is scheduled through october. firefighters rescued one person and two cats from the sixth floor of a burning building in san francisco. take a look. this is the moment a firefighter managed to grab one of those cats from the ledge of the window. you can hear those chill cheers that filled the streets on hide and eddie. one person, though, was seriously injured. firefighters say all of this started as an accidental kitchen fire. one person is displaced, but the firefighters that reacted to the scene. such heroes. oh, absolutely. >> heroes indeed. and a happy. a happy feline at the end there. yeah. that's great news. you know, the traffic's not the only

thing that may impact bart. traffic may be impacted by what we're talking about. bart, was that earlier. the weather may also impact the traffic tomorrow morning because it's going to be wet in some spots. >> caltrans. we were talking to caltrans. >> there you go. i knew it had something to do with transportation. >> it's on wheels. it's on wheels. >> here we go. here's a look at the satellite radar composite image. looks like we've got a very strong onshore flow. have you noticed? have you been outside lately? it is really gusty out there, right now. we have gusts up to 47mph at oakland, 43mph at sfo, and all around the bay area. basically wind gusts from 25mph up into the 40s. pretty breezy. now these breezes will taper off a little bit during the overnight hours. here we're looking at the 24 hour temperature change. most inland areas are anywhere from one to 2 or 3 degrees cooler than at this time last night. most places closer to the coast are just a couple of degrees warmer. here's a view from our rooftop camera looking along the embarcadero 56 degrees here in san francisco right now. oakland 59 low 60s at hayward and san jose. upper 50s at redwood city

and half moon bay. beautiful view from mount tam looking down onto the bay. looks at the bright lights in san francisco and across the bay in oakland, giving us a nice view here. these are current temperature readings. also 58 degrees in santa rosa. 52 petaluma. mid 50s at napa and fairfield and upper 50s at concord and livermore. and from emeryville we present this view. these are the forecast headlines overnight. it will be breezy, but not nearly so gusty as it is right now, with light rain and drizzle developing. and then tomorrow morning we'll have a few showers to greet morning commuters. but later in the day, just a mix of clouds and sun and the remainder of the week will bring us unsettled weather for a few days and then a warming pattern toward the end of the week. the forecast animation for the overnight overnight hours shows increasing clouds just swirling through the bay area, and some showers developing. light showers. for the most part, we're not talking about heavy rainfall. however, there may be enough rainfall to produce wet spots on the pavement for morning commuters and then it will all taper off by about midday or so tomorrow. overnight low temperatures will be mainly

in the mid to upper 50s, although a little milder in some spots like antioch, where the low will drop down to only about 60 degrees then. highs tomorrow 60 one half moon bay 67, in san francisco, oakland 69. many other locations around the bay shoreline will be in the upper 60s to about 70 degrees. inland, east bay, low to mid 70s. tomorrow 74 at concord. fairfield 75. up in the north bay 68 at napa, 76 at santa rosa. so a pretty wide range of highs there and up to about 70 down in the south bay in san jose. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. and as you can see, the next three days are going to be a bit cooler than average for this time of the year. only 60s to about 70 around the bay shoreline. but then on thursday it starts to warm up a bit. friday we'll see mid 80s in our inland areas and look at saturday and sunday summerlike up to about 90 inland. on saturday 8-80 around the bay and on sunday 94 mid 90s in the warmest inland spots and low 80s around the bay shoreline.

reporter cornell bernard looks at how hotels and restaurants are getting ready for that convention. boost >> streets around moscone center are getting power washed and digital signs are up telling drivers that something big is happening. this week. dreamforce, the annual tech conference extravaganza, kicks off tuesday, organized by salesforce, san francisco's largest employer. we do a bunch of conventions everywhere, so i would say that this one is probably the biggest one we've done, considering it takes up 2 to 3 halls. the economic stakes are high for dreamforce. s.f. travel says the city's restaurants, hotels and local businesses will benefit from the more than 45,000 in-person attendees and the total economic impact of the conference is projected to be 92.97 million. dreamforce. this week exactly how big a deal is it for you guys? >> it's everything. >> dave mabry is co-owner of the 111 minna gallery, where lots of tablecloths are being unfurled.

>> in san francisco, cornell, bernard abc seven news. >> now dreamforce will shut down two blocks around the moscone center to cars on fourth street between mission and howard streets will be closed from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. monday through thursday. howard has already been closed between third and fourth, and will stay closed until 10 p.m. next sunday. well, shifting weather is giving firefighters an edge as they battle multiple large wildfires scorching southern california. this intense firefight is heading into its second week, but crews are making progress. the airport fire has burned 115 homes so far, and spread to more than 23,500 acres in orange and riverside counties. it's currently just 19% contained several evacuation orders, and warnings are in place, and a similar situation with the bridge fire in los angeles and san bernardino counties. more than 54,000 acres there have burned, with just 9% containment. now. two people were hurt in that fire. the fire

line in san bernardino county has scorched nearly 39,000 acres. more evacuations are in place there. thousands of firefighters are out battling each of these wildfires. well, firefighters along the peninsula are using ai to detect wildfires faster. 50 new sensors are being installed in strategic locations of woodside, portola valley and unincorporated parts of san mateo county. the fire safe council says the n5 sensors will detect smoke and alert first responders in real time. those devices can track air quality and how smoke spreads. a retail burglary crew now faces charges for stealing six figures worth of items from stores in the bay area. san francisco police say the crew stole items from stores in san francisco and san mateo counties. they took merchandise with an estimated value of up to $100,000. police
