>> good monday morning, everyone. i'm rhiannon ally. and i'm lionel moise. >> in for andrew. we begin with the fbi investigating what appears to be a second assassination attempt on former president trump. >> authorities say trump was playing golf at his florida course yesterday when a secret service agent spotted a man with an ak 47 secret service shot at the suspect, who was taken into custody after a brief chase. >> the former president was not hurt in a new statement. trump called it an interesting day, and he also thanked the secret service. it would mark the second assassination attempt against trump in just over two months. this morning, new details on another apparent assassination attempt against former president trump in the bushes where this guy was is an ak 47 style rifle with a scope. >> two backpacks which were hung on the fence that had ceramic tile in them, and a gopro. >> sources say trump was playing the fifth hole at his west palm beach golf course yesterday,

when a secret service agent was one hole ahead, patrolling the area where he spotted the gunman less than 500 yards from trump. >> he was able to spot this rifle barrel sticking out of the fence and immediately engage that individual. >> the agent opened fire, shooting at the suspect at least four times. the golf course was put on lockdown, but the would be gunman evaded police. a bystander managed to see the man escape. >> we were able to locate a witness that came to us and sai, hey, i saw the guy running out of the bushes. he jumped into a black nissan and i took a picture of the vehicle and the tag, which was great. >> after a miles long chase, officers arrested ryan routh. authorities sharing this picture of his car on the side of the road, along with an image of items they say routh left behind at the golf course. an ak 47 rifle with a scope, a gopro and two backpacks. one of the bags containing a ceramic tile, which experts say shows he may have been preparing for a

confrontation with police. police have not released a motive, but investigators are exploring whether the suspect was upset by trump's position on ukraine. records show 58 year old routh lived in north carolina for most of his life before moving to hawaii in 2018. this would mark the second assassination attempt on trump's life in the last nine weeks, including the pennsylvania shooting in july that left trump injured and one bystander dead. after yesterday's incident. trump sending out a fundraising email, writing my resolve is only stronger after another attempt on my life, adding i will never slow down, i will never give up, i will never surrender. and trump advisers are raising concerns because trump's presence at his golf course was not publicized. trump was golfing with a longtime friend, president biden, and vice president harris condemned political violence after that incident. >> yesterday, the secret service was already under the microscope

after that attempted assassination back in july. abc's christiane cordero is live in washington with more details on that. good morning. christiane. >> brianna, good morning to you. so trump's family and political leaders are condemning the incident and demanding answers on how another potential assailant got so close. this morning, political figures from both sides of the aisle are expressing shock after the apparent assassination attempt on former president trump in florida. president biden and vice president harris releasing separate statements saying there is no place for violence in america. trump's running mate, senator jd vance, saying he's glad trump is safe, adding i'll be hugging my kids extra tight and saying a prayer of gratitude. the trump family also reacting eric trump saying my father is running out of lives. yesterday's incident comes just two months after the assassination attempt on trump in butler, pennsylvania. after the shooting in july, the director of the secret service resigned and trump's security increased, with bulletproof glass being set up at his

outdoor rallies. >> he's not the sitting president. if he was, we would have had to hire a golf course around it. but because he's not the security is limited to the areas that the secret service deems possible. so i would imagine the next time he comes at a golf course, there'll probably be a little bit more people around the perimeter. but the secret service did exactly what they should have done. they provided exactly what the protection should have been, and their agent did a fantastic job. >> democratic and republican members of the task force investigating the shooting have already requested a briefing from the secret service on yesterday's incident. >> i'm deeply concerned, quite frankly, for the former president's safety. you know the secret service has a lot to explain how an individual was able to get, again, this close to the former president. >> there are now bipartisan calls to have trump's security match that of biden's. one democratic representative saying anything less than maximum protection is a self-inflicted wound that puts our nation's

stability at grave risk. trump is expected back on the campaign trail tomorrow, when he is scheduled to hold a town hall in michigan. lionel. >> all right, christiane, thanks for that update. a tropical storm warning is posted along the coast of the carolinas. residents are bracing for severe flooding over the next few days. abc somara theodore says before it's done, the storm's rain will affect most of the east coast. >> we anticipate the system to drive inland towards myrtle beach and wilmington, north carolina before pushing deeper to charlotte and raleigh by the afternoon tuesday. this then moves into parts of west virginia and western virginia wednesday through friday. this rain still sticking around, impacting the mid-atlantic and northeast. we could see flash flooding with totals reaching as high as eight inches of rain in parts of the carolinas, along with 1 to 3 foot storm surge and the potential for tornadoes. >> somara thank you. and when that system becomes a tropical storm, it will be called helene. >> yemeni houthis say they fired

jurors in another case helped catch him. the suspect in the university of idaho quadruple murders is now being held in a new location. bryan kohberger was transferred to boise yesterday. a change of venue from moscow, idaho, which is about 200 miles north, was granted due to publicity. kohberger is set to go on trial in june for the 2022 killings. >> now to springfield, ohio, on edge this morning because of ongoing bomb threats. those threats follow baseless claims about haitian migrants in the city eating pets. abc's alison kosik has more. >> this morning, growing fear in springfield, ohio. >> parents are coming to get their kids because they feel worried. they, you know, they feel like their kids are not safe here with the bomb threats. >> two local universities closing their campuses with classes going remote after the schools say they received e-mails making threats of a bomb and a potential shooting on the campuses. at least one of those emails targeting haitians in the

community. a spokesman for springfield, a city about 40 miles west of columbus, says bomb threats have targeted the mayor's house and city hall. the mayor says he believes those threats are directly connected to the baseless claims that haitian migrants were abducting pets in springfield in order to eat them. city and state officials say there is no evidence this is happening. >> they're eating the pets. the claim, amplified by former president trump at the abc news debate and his running mate, ohio senator jd vance, who condemns threats of violence while denying his rhetoric caused them to denounce the bomb threats in springfield, ohio. i don't know what happened with the bomb threats. i know that it's been taken over by illegal migrants. >> if i have to, if i have to create stories so that the american media actually pays attention to the suffering of the american people, then that's what i'm going to do. >> you just said that this is a story that you've created. so.
