>> plus, tens of thousands of techies descending on san francisco for dreamforce, the annual event set to start tomorrow. local shops and restaurants say they're ready for the business. and what you need to know if you plan to be in that area. good morning to you. welcome to monday, september 16th. >> yeah. let's begin with a check on the weather with meteorologist drew tuma. yeah. >> hi, friends. it's going to be cool today. cloudy to start out this morning. we'll get some sunshine this afternoon, but those clouds will be slow to break down over the next 6 to 8 hours. winds have been pretty strong overnight. winds gusting 20 to 30mph from the city to oakland. sfo right now gusting to 31mph. deeper into the the winds will weaken, but it certainly is a breezy start to the day. it's also on the chilly side. most of us starting out in the low and mid 50s. as we get you going on this monday. so look at the inland forecast. daytime highs only in the low and mid 70s. look at all that cloud cover. this morning. it's an overcast sky right now. we get a little bit of sunshine here later on in the afternoon.

and the winds do weaken. but low pressure to our north is bringing in some cooler air today. so temperatures will be below average around the bay shoreline. it is breezy right now. overcast skies. we'll get some sunshine again later on this afternoon. highs upper 60s. lower 70s. so certainly cool for this time of the year. then along the coast it's very cloudy right now. some pockets of drizzle. it is breezy. highs only in the low 60s. let's check in with frances. see those drive times this morning? morning, frances. >> morning, drew. morning, everyone. well, we are starting off with an early morning problem. we'll take you to the maps. and this one is in san francisco. so heads up a solo car crash. it's on the southbound 101 connector. it's on the ramp to eastbound 80, and we have a live camera near the scene. it looks like. wow. really windy as drew was mentioning, but they just might have cleared that crash that we saw moments ago. and we'll keep an eye on that and let you know if things change. i'm trying to see if it looks like it has been cleared. okay. we'll move along now and show you a live shot of

the san mateo bridge. it does look a little foggy out here. and the right hand traffic is westbound. it is crowded, but moving well right now. delay free from hayward as you make your way into foster city and san mateo. hi amanda. >> good morning. frances. at the live desk this morning, we're tracking the apparent second assassination attempt of former president donald trump. the man detained outside mr. trump's florida golf course yesterday is expected to be charged sometime this week. the fbi is identifying him as 58 year old ryan routh, saying he was able to get within 500 yards of trump before a secret service agent spotted him. shots were fired by the agent. it is unclear if routh fired any shots. trump was rushed to safety and was not injured. the former president's golf plans were not publicized in any way, and sources tell abc news going to the course was a last minute decision. the palm beach sheriff says security was not stationed around the perimeter of the course. since mr. trump is no longer president. >> i would imagine that the next

time he comes to the golf course, there will probably be a little bit more people around the perimeter. >> trump issued a statement shortly after saying, quote, i will never give up. i will never surrender. president biden and vice president harris both issued statements condemning the violence and early this morning, former democratic congress member and current san mateo county supervisor elect jackie speier posted on social media, saying, quote, i am sickened by the second assassination attempt against former president trump. i'm grateful he is safe. he needs to speak out against violence, stop violence, excuse me. stop spewing hate against swift and others and tamp down his rhetoric on false comments about haitians legally here in the u.s. as for the motive here, the fbi is looking into whether routh had grievances about trump's position on the war in ukraine. trump is expected back on the campaign trail tomorrow when he is scheduled to hold a town hall in michigan, where

certain a lot is going to change about this in the coming days. our coverage of the second attempted assassination of former president donald trump is being constantly updated on our apps, and abc seven news.com. >> new developments involving school closures in san francisco. students, families and teachers will now have to wait until october to find out which campuses will be impacted. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez is here with that. >> good morning reggie. sfusd parents were expecting the list of school closures to come out this wednesday. now, the district saying it will not be released until next month. yesterday, san francisco unified school district superintendent matt wayne released a message about the reason for the delay, saying that they want to make sure they get it right, adding the process of closing and merging schools is complicated, and i want to make sure we've looked at it from every angle, including how after school care, grant funding and transportation will be affected. he says the rest of the timeline remains relatively consistent, saying the board of education will vote

on the package of school closures in december and that changes will take place next fall. meredith dodson represents the san francisco parent coalition, a group of more than a thousand sfusd parents. >> there's a lot of families with anxiety around, oh, my school is under-enrolled. my school is going to be on the list and just kind of anticipating this date. and now all of a sudden the state is getting pushed back and the timeline is a little unclear and people don't know exactly why. and so there's, you know, families are rightfully concerned and upset that, you know, wondering what's going on. >> some parents, abc seven talked to say the delay is frustrating and that parents and students need time to prepare for the changes. abc seven reached out to the district for more comment, but hadn't heard back as of late last night. live in the studio gloria rodriguez abc seven news. all right. >> thank you. shifting weather is giving firefighters an edge as they battle multiple large wildfires scorching southern california. this intense fire

fight is heading into its second week, but crews are making progress. the airport fire has burned 115 homes so far and spread to more than 23,500 acres in orange and riverside counties. it's currently 19% contained. several evacuation orders and warnings are in place. a similar situation with the bridge fire in los angeles and san bernardino counties. more than 54,000 acres burned with just 9% containment now. two people were hurt in that fire and the lion fire in san bernardino county has scorched nearly 39,000 acres. more evacuations in place there. thousands of firefighters are out battling each of these wildfires. and a lost dog found on the fire line is capturing the hearts of firefighters. crews found him wandering around the lion fire incident command center in san bernardino county. cal fire says he is gentle and has been befriending every

firefighter he meets, kissing and snuggling his way into their hearts. firefighters took him to a shelter, hoping to find his family. >> new this morning, salesforce is giving $23 million in grants to help schools teach. i these grants will support high schools and middle schools across the country, including san francisco and oakland. salesforce says they want to give students the opportunity to develop the skills needed for success in an ai driven future, and that donation comes as tens of thousands of people are about to descend on san francisco for salesforce's annual conference, known as dreamforce. events officially kick off tomorrow, but if you've been around moscone center over the past week, then you've already seen the impressive setup. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard looks at how hotels and restaurants are getting ready for this convention. boost >> the streets around moscone center are getting power washed and digital signs are up telling drivers that something big is happening. this week. dreamforce, the annual tech

conference extravaganza, kicks off tuesday, organized by salesforce, san francisco's largest employer. >> we do a bunch of conventions everywhere, so i would say that this one is probably the biggest one we've done, considering it takes up 2 to 3 halls. >> the economic stakes are high for dreamforce. s.f. travel says the city's restaurants, hotels and local businesses will benefit from the more than 45,000 in-person attendees and the total economic impact of the conference is projected to be 92.97 million. dreamforce this week. exactly how big a deal is it for you guys? >> it's everything. >> dave mabry is co-owner of the 111 minna gallery, where lots of tablecloths are being unfurled. the space hosting a dreamforce client reception this week. private and corporate events has been their main source of revenue. >> these conventions, you know, downtown has been decimated since the kind of stay at home since the pandemic. a lot of those those companies haven't forced people to come back to work. so for us getting to

the case until 10 p.m. sunday. sfmta also will have some detours in place, so watch for their signs 5-10 this morning in the accuweather forecast. >> we're looking at live doppler seven along with satellite, and you can see this area of low pressure. this counterclockwise swirl is basically on top of northern california right now. it's giving us those gusty winds this morning across the city and in the east bay. and it's also supplying us with some cool air. that trough is allowing some colder temperatures to move in from the north. there could be some pockets of drizzle. there's just not a lot of moisture associated with it overhead. but nonetheless, there's another chance of some showers coming our way on wednesday. so just know the next couple of days those temperatures are going to feel cooler than average will be in this below average pattern through much of the upcoming week, only 67 in the city today, it's mostly cloudy, limited sunshine in san francisco. it's also breezy heading into oaklan. we have morning clouds breaking for sunshine this afternoon. only 69. 70 in san jose, below average and cool for september

in walnut creek. coming in at 73 degrees. so the strongest winds are occurring right now. you can see that this morning. and they do tend to weaken as we head into the afternoon. so winds not as strong later on today. here's future weather. look at all that cloud cover overhead that will stick with us through the entire morning. then into the afternoon we start to see that cloud cover break down that low pressure starts to pull away from us. so we'll finish the day with some brighter conditions. but look at temperatures only in the 60s and low 70s for daytime highs a high of about 67. in the city, 76. the high in santa rosa, about 74. in concord, 70. in san jose, we'll go to 68. in fremont. we'll take a closer look at that midweek drizzle. reggie coming up in a few minutes. >> drew. thank you. united airlines stepping it up. coming up the deal with spacex to bring a new service to travelers. >> and tiktok facing a key court hearing today, the company's battle to block a law that could ban the app. wyatt's parent company, bytedance, argues the law is unconstitutional and violates free speech. >> plus, highlights from the biggest night in tv. we have the

following a successful splashdown. their return marks the end of the world's first commercial spacewalk. >> and there you can see spot. >> the spacex polaris dawn crew landed off the coast of the florida keys yesterday. four astronauts made history after completing the first ever commercial spacewalk. the five day mission reached a higher altitude than any human has traveled in five decades. the crew's mission commander was a billionaire ceo, his close friend. also on board, along with two spacex engineers, united airlines and spacex, are teaming up to offer free in-flight wi-fi. united plans to start testing the service on some flights next year, using spacex's starlink satellite internet service. eventually, it will expand to all of united's planes. united passengers

currently pay 8 to 10 bucks for internet service. hawaiian airlines and jsx also have deals with spacex for free in-flight wi-fi at the live desk. >> now, i'm keeping an eye on a big day for tiktok. lawyers for tiktok are set to go to court today to argue a law that could lead to a ban on the app is unconstitutional. now, president biden signed that law less than five months ago, giving tiktok's parent company bytedance until january to sell its u.s. operations or face a ban. it's because bytedance is a chinese company, and there are concerns the chinese government could gain access to the information of u.s. citizens. bytedance says the law violates free speech rights in the u.s. and it's worth pointing out that despite the justice department calling the app a national security threat, the campaign of both donald trump and vice president harris are quite active on tiktok. >> you see both campaigns on their uh- regardless of how they even feel about tiktok, tiktok's

future uh- they're using it now, they want to reach young people >> bytedance says even if it finds a buyer, a sale won't happen by the deadline congress is set. tiktok currently has more than 170 million users. it's one of the most popular social media apps around. back to you. >> hi amanda, we have a severe traffic alert in san francisco. it's on the connector ramp from 101 to eastbound 80. and the chp says right now there's no estimated time of reopening. so you're going to want to avoid this connector ramp. in fact, we have a live camera shot at the scene. you can see it looks like they're trying to clear this car crash on the connector ramp. those taillights, you see that is southbound 101. so if you're heading to the lower deck of the bay bridge or into downtown san francisco from octavia, octavia, you want to consider alternatives to get towards the downtown area and to the lower deck of the bay bridge, but

the upcoming week. now, wednesday, another round of low pressure is bringing us another chance for some drizzle. but the extended outlook as we head into saturday and sunday will find warmer temperatures moving in for the upcoming weekend. so today's forecast excuse me, showing you we start out with those clouds slowly breaking down for sunshine by about 5:00 pm. it's bright out there inland, but temperatures only in the mid 70s for daytime. highs around the bay shoreline will keep it pretty gray all morning long. in the afternoon. it's partly cloudy and highs in the upper 60s and then along the coast it's pretty overcast before we turn for some sunshine later on today and highs in the low 60s. it's breezy out there right now. those winds will weaken as well in the afternoon, so clouds and sun. that's the call for your day today. certainly want to dress in a couple of layers this morning. we're starting out temperatures in the 50s. and we don't warm that fast as we head into the afternoon 60s to mid 70s. that's about it for daytime highs. now overnight tonight we'll bring back the cloud cover will likely have some coastal drizzle. it's a cool night. temperatures in

lane will be open in each direction between fourth and seventh streets until 6 a.m. work will continue through october. >> number seven. apple releases ios 18 today. updates include a customizable home screen, new control center, and new imessage features. you can also lock apps with face id, apple's new ai features aren't expected until next month. >> novato police are investigating a suspicious fire and vandalism at college of marin. this happened at the indian valley campus. fire crews responded to the alarm saturday morning. they found a small wildfire burning in the hills behind the school's softball field. there were also several broken windows around multiple buildings. investigators say they saw a man walking away from the scene. he was detained after police searched the area in the east bay. >> students attending saturday night's college football game at cal's memorial stadium got out of control. head coach justin wilcox had to scold the crowd

going to be below average. all that cloud cover this morning gives us a little bit of sunshine. this afternoon. but temperatures low mid 70s. that's about it for our warmest spots inland around the bay shoreline. it is breezy this morning, weakening winds throughout the afternoon and increasing sunshine. but highs below average. upper 60s near 70 degrees. that's about it. along the coast today it is overcast to start out. we'll see partly sunny skies this afternoon and highs barely in the low 60s. let's check in with frances. see those drive times? >> all right drew, we have better news in san francisco. but we do have some very slow traffic in livermore. so let's get to san francisco. first, there was a solo car crash blocking the connector ramp, but now it has been cleared. so the one on one connector ramp to eastbound 80 is looking good. and we have a live camera shot here. you can see headlights moving on southbound 101. they've turned the camera around, so traffic is flowing well in both directions. through that area. but it is getting crowded on the westbound ride on highway rather westbound 80. highway four to san francisco.

the drive time is now 34 minutes, but no major delays or major problems there, where we are seeing lots of brake lights is westbound 580 from tracy to dublin. that is slow and read at 73 minutes. there was an earlier crash and there's even a crash on westbound 205 getting out of tracy. amanda. >> all right, frances, thank you so much. new developments involving pending school closures in san francisco. the district is now waiting to release the list of campuses it plans to shut down. frustrating. already anxious parents. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez joins us live in studio and, gloria, why the new timeline? >> well, amanda, the san francisco unified school district superintendent, says they want to make sure they get it right. sfusd parents were expecting the list of school closures to come out this wednesday. now, the district saying it won't be released until next month. yesterday, superintendent matt wayne released a message about the reason for the delay. including. this ensures that, number one, our fiscal analysis is strong and our transition plan and

support systems are in place. number two, data from the equity audit is integrated into the recommendation and number three, we meaningful meaningfully consult with city school and community leaders. and he says the rest of the timeline remains relatively consistent, saying the board of education will vote on the package of school closures in december and that changes will take place next fall. some parents at abc7 talked to say the delay is frustrating, and that parents and students need time to prepare for those changes. >> if this is something that's going to happen, then yes, let's let's be sure. let's be sure about it and let's get the list out and let everybody know so they can prepare. >> it is frustrating, but i'm not surprised. two of my grandchildren were at the neighborhood school and things were getting so frustrated that their parents pulled them out to send them to the catholic school. >> meredith dodson represents the san francisco parent coalition, a group of more than 1000 sfusd parents. and she says

families are upset and concerned about the delay. she said the district will need to be ready to answer important questions on day one. abc seven reached out to the district for further comment, but had not heard back as of late last night. reggie >> gloria. thank you. the city of oakland is suing oakland unified school district. the city claims ousd has not paid its share of costs for school board elections in more than 15 years. according to the lawsuit, the issue has been going on since 2008. the city didn't notice this was happening until last year. that's when they asked usda to cover about a million and a half dollars from elections dating back to 2020. the district's board president tells the chronicle the district does not believe it's responsible to pay this. this lawsuit comes as both the city and ousd face multimillion dollar budget deficits. a retail burglary crew now faces charges for stealing six figures worth of items from stores in the bay area. san francisco police say
