conference is a critical boost for san francisco's tourism industry, still clawing its way back from pandemic lows. it's also part of what makes the bay area a defining place for the future of artificial intelligence. >> and tonight, we're digging into how artificial intelligence is influencing everything from classrooms to fighting wildfires. but we begin with abc7 news reporter j.r. stone looking at how dreamforce is setting the ai agenda. >> reporter it's packed right now in san francisco as dreamforce 2024 is about to get underway. >> i flew in from new york today, which was a mistake. so next time i'm going to fly out sunday. >> uh- is that busy? oh yeah. >> oh yeah. there's so much going on. >> kevin stagg is one of the thousands who arrived in san francisco on monday, and one of more than 40,000 who will attend salesforce's annual tech conference in person. you can see the crowds of people and long lines of cars. the conference goes from tuesday through thursday, but some of the fun stuff is already in full swing.

>> i mean, even even tonight, there's happy hours and dinners and after parties, but it's already been a long day for me. >> those from salesforce say dreamforce 2024 is the largest ai event in the world. those i spoke with on monday were eager to talk about that very topic. >> definitely, ai is on everyone's mind. i believe for sure in mind. >> how close do you think we are to using it in your field? >> no, just a little. we are like here, we can take it there. >> we got to go up here. yes. many attendees i spoke with like florencia there say they're not sure if the ai implementation is widely there yet, but just knowledge about ai systems and how they can operate seems to be key this year. >> i think we got to a ways to go just understanding the use cases, what is the right time to use it and when not to use it. >> i'm not threatened by it. i'm excited by it. if we can do the

basics using ai or some sort of automation, we can free up the human talent to do some of the either higher investment or the meatier. the meatier stuff. >> as we were outside of the dreamforce setup monday, we didn't spot any of this year's speakers, which include jane goodall, matthew mcconaughey, ayesha curry and kerry washington, but all four are scheduled to be here. we also didn't see pink or imagine dragons who will be performing at oracle park on wednesday night, but there was certainly a good vibe in the air. >> it's such a great community. i'm hoping to get to tiburon and sausalito if i get some free time at the end of the week, because it's just so wonderful. >> j.r. stone abc seven news. >> as you can tell, the attendees are very excited now along with the conference today, salesforce announced it is committing $23 million to help guide kids who are considering ai related careers. a salesforce vice president joined us in the studio today for abc seven news at three to share why they think that investment will pay off. >> young people actually have

already been using ai and social media and all the different aspects adults have to change. so what we're thinking about is what's the evolution? what are the skills that we don't know today that we can help for tomorrow. so preparation and partnership that's the key. and what it means is asking young people, what do you think are your jobs that you're looking for cyber security, different type of industries, getting them exposure, that $23 million commitment includes 10 million for the san francisco and oakland unified school districts, by the way, and will be covering dreamforce all week long, bringing you the announcements. >> the celebrity appearances and the big picture impact on the bay area as the dreamforce attendees consider the future of ai. >> other bay area companies are turning the technology toward fighting wildfires. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez shows us how firefighters are using new tools on the ground, and in the skies. >> viasat is a program that we started with satellite experts and a number of nonprofits. it

will be a new constellation of satellites. >> google is sharing what they're calling a breakthrough in wildfire detection. a new set of satellites have been designed to detect and track wildfires as small as the size of a classroom within 20 minutes. >> there's so much happening where fire science and traditional firefighting are really merging and working together. >> seth shalit, ceo of santa clara county fire safe council, said. two weeks ago, they announced a partnership with a competitive organization called oro tech. >> i think we're going to see a little bit of an arms race with satellite technology really being able to look down and detect fires, but it's not just detection of the fires, it's the mapping of the fires. >> when it comes to detection. charlotte showed us new ai based wildfire smoke sensors so it can discern from a barbecue or a chimney or a wildfire. 50 and five sensors were installed at stanford, palo alto and woodside at the end of august. >> interestingly enough, right, every wildfire or every fire has its own distinct fingerprint,

right? so there's particulates and other aspects that make up a fire's composition. and these sensors are basically using that artificial intelligence and looking for pattern recognition. >> once it detects a wildfire, depending on the fire agency, a text alert will go out to the battalion chief. the palo alto fire department is collaborating with the n5 sensor technology, the fire chief said. the initial alert of a fire is key. >> it's really fundamental, it's the same case as a fire alarm would be in any occupancy. is that how soon can we be notified? >> 80 sensors are installed across the hawaiian islands. the sensors installed here in the south bay make up the largest installation in the continental u.s. >> what that says is that people understand the importance of notifying of such emergencies that are so catastrophic. as you can see from fires that are currently burning in palo alto. >> lauren martinez abc seven news. >> all right. our final monday

of summer felt more like fall as we look out live from our exploratorium camera. we saw cooler temperatures and even a bit of rain today. and there is more where that came from, apparently. abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel is here with your 24 hour forecast and a look at our next chance of rain. sandhya. yeah, dan. >> and you know that rain coming in at least a chance and the higher humidity certainly helping the firefighters as we take a look at a live picture right now from our mount tam cam, you can see that the air mass is stabilizing. our marine layer is back. and here's a look at what you can expect tomorrow morning. fog and clouds. numbers in the 50s. peeks of sun at noontime. below average once again. low 60s to mid 70s and mostly cloudy for the evening. live doppler seven. tracking our next system. it gets in here on wednesday and as we show you a quick preview, you can see wednesday morning shower opportunity knocking out our door. i'll be back with a look at the timeline and how much, if anything, we will see coming right up. all right.

>> we'll check back. thank you. sandhya. now, the latest on breaking news out of new york city, where music mogul sean diddy combs sits in jail tonight. combs was taken into custody by federal agents at a hotel in midtown manhattan. he's expected in court for arraignment tomorrow. now, we don't know what he's being charged with. prosecutors say the indictment will be sealed until tomorrow. the arrest comes amid a wave of lawsuits filed against him alleging sexual abuse. and back in march, federal agents raided combs homes in miami and the los angeles area. his attorney issued a statement following tonight's arrest that says, in part, sean diddy combs is a music icon, self-made entrepreneur, loving family man who has spent the last 30 years building an empire, adoring his children and working to uplift the black community. he is an imperfect person, but he is not a criminal. please reserve your judgment until you have all the facts. >> we have new details tonight about the second apparent attempted assassination of donald trump. investigators now say the suspect camped out on a golf course with a gun. he never

fired, and he never had a line of sight to the former president. abc news reporter zohreen shah has new video showing that man's arrest. >> this evening, the former president speaking out for the first time since the attempted assassination on social media platform x. >> it was quite something, but it worked out well. and secret service did an excellent job and they have the man behind bars and hopefully he's going to be there for a long time. dangerous person, very, very dangerous person. >> he's walking this police body camera video shows officers in florida detaining ryan wesley routh, the man accused of apparently trying to assassinate former president trump at his golf course in west palm beach. >> we are investigating this matter as an apparent assassination attempt. a former president trump tonight questions on how he got within 400 yards of the former president, or how he might have known where the president might be. >> is there any evidence to suggest that the suspect knew that donald trump would be on

the golf course at that time, and was the golf course searched thoroughly before the former president's arrival? >> so at this time, it was an off the record movement, meaning it was not on the. on the former president's official schedule. >> the acting secret service director saying a plan for trump's golf game was put in place once he decided to go to the course. stressing the game was not on his public or private schedule. investigators say cell phone records show 58 year old routh waiting about 12 hours near the sixth hole on the public side, as trump moved near the fifth hole. a secret service agent called out gun the subject, who did not have line of sight to the former president, fled the scene. >> he did not fire or get off any shots at our agent. >> trump was swiftly moved to a safe place as agents reportedly fired up to six rounds. routh sped off in a sedan and was caught 45 minutes later. officers said he answered in the affirmative when asked why he was stopped. routh, facing

firearm charges in court today, sources saying they're looking into whether routh took issue with trump's ukraine positions. zohreen shah, abc news, los angeles. >> and this represents another dark turn in an already divisive election. we are 49 days out from election day, and there's a concerted effort to drive latino voters to the polls. it's a welcome change. according to many latino citizens living in san francisco. >> we don't see anybody here. it's just a constant issue that kind of gets brushed under the rug. a lot of young people are feeling like not morally correct, voting for either candidate right now. >> so it's really hard, just like for us to pick a side. >> latinos represent nearly 11% of san francisco voters, yet many say they haven't been courted by local politicians. san francisco residents will vote for a mayor on the same day they select a president in november. it will be the first time that's happened and is expected to attract more people to the polls. happening tomorrow, a continuation of that

cisco are getting a new tool to do it. we want to show you the new technology soon to be deployed throughout the city. we're talking about trailers equipped with multiple cameras that will give police new eyes on neighborhoods around the clock. these mobile security units also have floodlights, strobes, and a speaker set to share this message. listen. this area is being monitored for the safety and security of the citizens of san francisco. the city says the new cameras will

set up in the south of market and mission districts. for now, with a third area to be determined. mayor london breed, who is running for reelection, says the city's anti-crime efforts are working with car break-ins down 70% from last june. she says crime overall is at its lowest level in ten years. she hopes the new cameras will help keep that trend going. >> the legal case pitting the u.s. government against tiktok is officially underway in washington, d.c. both sides appeared before a panel of judges to make their case. today, the justice department calls tiktok a national security threat because it has access to americans personal data and the ability to potentially manipulate content. the company's lawyers are arguing that a law that could ban the app is unconstitutional and violates american's right to free speech. >> there was a little bit of skepticism from the judges, because the fact is this was passed by congress and the judge said, why is tiktok questioning this thing that was passed with such bipartisan support by

congress? >> the hearing comes less than five months after president biden signed a bipartisan bill into law, giving tiktok and its chinese parent company bytedance, an ultimatum to sell the app to a non-chinese owner or be banned. >> building a better bay area. a key focus here at abc7 news at 11. and tonight, we're highlighting three breakthroughs in that effort. first, a major upgrade to the transbay tube to keep bart riders safe when the big one eventually hits. transit leaders say they've finished work, reinforcing the tunnel between san francisco and oakland so it can better withstand a big earthquake. it has a stronger steel lining and a better pumping system. if small cracks cause flooding. >> our next breakthrough a solution to chronic flooding in the south bay, is finally on track to be finished after 70 years. yaga's creek in morgan hill has flooded homes and businesses over and over again. valley water says it's getting $80 million in federal funding to finish flood protection work along the creek. this project

dates all the way back to 1954. back in may, they finished building a tunnel underneath downtown morgan hill. valley water says the extra funding will allow them to finish the final phase by spring of 2027. >> and our final breakthrough is how a push to help kindergartners save for college is paying off. in 2011, san francisco opened savings accounts for kindergartens kindergartners in public schools for $50 a piece. we reported this at the time. now that first class of kindergartners graduated last year and a new study found that those students were significantly more likely to go to college compared to kids who did not get these savings accounts. college enrollment was up 6%. those gains double what you when you look at black, hispanic, filipino, pacific islander, and indigenous students. the average savings for the class of 2023 was more than $1,400. pretty impressive. >> it certainly is. okay, let's get a check on our weather. i know fall is not here yet, but

it felt like it. >> it already does. >> and then when fall hits, it will feel like summer. is that right, sandy? >> that's pretty much right. so thanks for giving my forecast away, dan. and let's take a look at the highs versus average for tomorrow. you will notice the column on the left is the forecast highs. 76 in santa rosa tomorrow. 83 is the average. so seven degrees below. 13 degrees below where you should be in napa. livermore from 75 for tomorrow. and 85 is your average. so 11 degrees below san francisco and san jose, between 5 and 8 degrees below where you should be for this time of year. but as i mentioned at the top of the show, the good thing is the cooler weather does help the firefighters not just here locally, but around the state. we have another system coming in, not quite as windy as what went through in the last 24 hours, and not as much moisture. this is the low that is pushing out. that brought us 45 to 50 mile an hour wind gusts and it also brought this is really i mean kind of cool is september

snow showers in the sierra earlier in the day, we did get our share of a few showers that came through in the last 24 hours, and it did focus its energy mostly to the south. as far as the rainfall totals right now, you can see from our santa cruz camera, winds are pretty light. ben loman 17 hundredths of an inch. la honda picked up 15. hundreds trace amounts napa livermore. mount diablo four hundredths and half moon bay 100th of an inch. a live view looking at salesforce tower getting ready for tomorrow. and you certainly can see the fog is around here in the city as we look at live doppler seven. there's some clouds overhead as well. your temperatures at this hour 5060s. it is going to be great sleeping weather. live view from pier 39. you can also see the overcast skies. and here's a look at what you can expect tomorrow. sun clouds still below average wednesday a chance of showers. and this weekend, autumn arrives on sunday. and as dan mentioned appropriately so, the temperatures are going to come up with the offshore flow

developing tomorrow morning. watch out. there's going to be quite a bit of fog and low cloudiness as we head into 11 a.m, some sun breaks and then higher clouds overtake for the rest of the afternoon and evening, so you're not going to see bright, clear skies all day long, but it is going to be nice 40s and 50s to start the day. mostly cloudy to cloudy tomorrow afternoon. you're looking at partly to mostly cloudy, low 60s along the coast, mid 70s inland. and now as we fast forward to wednesday, here comes the opportunity for some spotty showers wednesday morning. you will notice still a few coming through here in the afternoon hours around 3:00. i wouldn't rule it out so i just have the umbrella handy just in case. rainfall totals pretty much reflect what we're expecting, which is nothing measurable to a few hundredths of an inch. here's your accuweather seven day forecast fall like and below average tomorrow. spotty shower chance on wednesday. after that, you can pretty much count on sunshine a warming trend with those temperatures rising up into the 90s in time for the

patriots star aaron hernandez. >> entertainment reporter george pennacchio has more from the show's stars. aaron you don't know the kind of thoughts i have. >> american sports story aaron hernandez is a ten part mini series from executive producer ryan murphy. it examines the many sides of the football superstar's life, including what led him to murder a friend and later commit suicide in prison. i did not know a lot about aaron hernandez other than when he was arrested, and we started covering the story for the news and the backstory. i think, is going to take a lot of people by surprise. >> that's kind of one of the things that we are really trying to explore with the show. you know, because it's about the individual, but it's also kind of about the larger world and a lot of factors that enabled this outcome to jobs kept you on the field and off the streets. >> what does that mean? you saw? it still looks soft to you.

kyle shanahan said he did not know when running back christian mccaffrey would return from his calf strain and achilles tendon injury. he's currently on the injured reserve list and will miss at least four games today. more injury news wide receiver deebo samuel suffered a calf strain in the game. he's going to miss at least a couple of weeks. you see deebo highlighted there at the bottom of the screen. he was injured on this play in the fourth quarter just before the two minute warning in that loss to minnesota. his injury is the latest in a line of short term injuries that have forced him to miss time in every season since 2019. >> yeah, i mean, always when you lose real good players, it's always tough, but it happens all over the league. and, it's a
