50s to the lower 60s. let's check in with frances, see what's drive times. >> hi, drew. >> good morning everyone. we're already seeing the slowing in the usual spots. westbound 580 as you make your way out of tracy. but there is an accident for folks heading out of antioch. westbound four, making your way towards pittsburgh. motorcycle crash. after summersville road. it is being cleared right now, so traffic is starting to quickly recover. went from red. now it is yellow and hopefully improving. and here's a look at the westbound 80 ride for headlights making their way towards the bay bridge toll plaza from highway four to san francisco. it's a green to go. 27 minutes. we'll also check out the ride in the south bay and so far, so good, although it is looking a little gray out there. headlights are on northbound 101 and that is 880 right across your screen. so no problems in the south bay or on the peninsula at this point. reggie. >> thanks, francis. happening today. dreamforce kicks off in san francisco. it's expected to bring tens of thousands of people to the city and local businesses could not be happier. abc7 news reporter gloria

rodriguez is covering salesforce's annual tech conference. gloria, they're calling it now the largest ai event in the world. reporter. >> they are. reggie. and you could see that folks are already out here getting ready for people to arrive, probably in about an hour and a half. they'll start to get here, get their badges. and salesforce ceo marc benioff is scheduled to deliver the keynote address at 10:00 this morning, as dreamforce kicks off. and much of the conference is centered around ai. we have new video from overnight that shows you the setup here as dreamforce 2024 gets underway at the moscone center in san francisco and you could see the lights are on, the barricades are up. more than 40,000 people will attend salesforce's annual tech conference in person. yesterday, there were already crowds of people and long lines of cars in the city for the conference, which runs from today through thursday. those from salesforce say dreamforce 2024 is the

news. >> gloria thank you. we'll be covering dreamforce all week long, bringing you the announcements, the celebrity appearances and the big picture impact on the bay area. >> we're learning new details about the man accused in the latest assassination attempt on former president donald trump. new video shows the moment officers in florida confront and detain that suspect driver. walk straight back. investigators say ryan wesley ruth was near the golf course for 12 hours, waiting for mr. trump to appear. a secret service agent reportedly spotted the barrel of ruth's rifle and was able to scare him away. ruth was arrested shortly afterwards. >> the subject who did not have line of sight to the former president, fled the scene. he did not fire or get off any shots. >> ruth is facing two firearms charges. he was previously convicted in north carolina on a weapons charge. the fbi continues to look for a motive.

research shows ruth voted for trump in 2016, but was later critical of the former president for his tepid support of ukraine after russia's invasion. >> developing news members of the san francisco symphony chorus voted to authorize a strike overnight. according to the american guild of musical artists, 100% of the paid employees voted for strike authorization. at least 80% of the unpaid singers in the chorus pledged to honor a picket line. of the 152 singers, 32 of them are paid. the union has been negotiating for higher pay and equitable cuts since the last contract expired in july. the symphony says it's looking forward to continuing negotiations. the chorus is scheduled to hold its season opener thursday. >> a crime prevention tool new to san francisco will put live view technology or live cameras in the mission, and mid-market areas, and more could be on the way. trailers equipped with multiple cameras will give

police new eyes on neighborhoods around the clock. in addition to flashing lights, the units can also be monitored live depending on the situation and will broadcast this message. >> this area is being monitored for the safety and security of the citizens of san francisco. >> mayor london breed, who is running for reelection, said the city's anti-crime efforts are working with car break-ins down 70% from last june. she says crime overall is at its lowest level in ten years. she hopes the new cameras will help keep that trend going. >> a popular north bay beach is closed indefinitely after human wasterth bay. county crews recently found human waste seeping from the cliffs above the beach. >> when i heard that there was sewage coming down, it kind of is a little terrifying. >> the beach closure stretches from brighton avenue north to agate beach. county officials say the sewage flow is happening

at several dozen locations. >> after testing a few different sources along that bluff, we found that the substance was actually wastewater. it contained e-coli and other bacteria that aligns itself with human waste. >> officials are if the sewage is coming from septic tanks in nearby communities or from other sources. it's also unclear when the beach is going to reopen. >> 508 we're looking at live doppler seven, along with satellite today. we're sandwiched in between two areas of low pressure. this area of low pressure was responsible for the breeze yesterday. the cooler than average temperatures. and now as that one departs off to the east, we have another area of low pressure. this one in the gulf of alaska is about to dive down the coastline and will bring us another shot of some drizzle tomorrow and some cool weather that continues into thursday. so in between those two lows today, it's a mix of sun and clouds, and it still

feels like temperatures are well below average by about ten degrees in most cities. so looking at the morning forecast, we have cloud cover this morning breaking out for some midday sunshine temperatures starting out in the 50s, slowly climbing into the 60s after 9 a.m. this morning. but temperatures just like yesterday are going to feel cool for this time of the year. a lot of cloud cover in the city today. minimal sunshine, temperatures only in the mid 60s. 67 in oakland with a mix of sun and clouds. cool for september in san jose and walnut creek only coming in with a high of 73 degrees. so future weather with the clouds out there this morning, lunchtime will be the brightest part of your day. that's we'll see the most sunshine in the forecast over the next 24 hours, because later on this afternoon, those clouds build back in as that next area of low pressure gets closer to us and will finish out the day with overcast skies. so mix of sun and clouds today will keep those temperatures below average mid 60s to the mid 70s. that's about it. now tomorrow we have a chance of some drizzle before warmer weather moves in here.

>> today, the bay area will play a direct role in relief efforts. the san francisco spca says they'll receive dozens of animals rescued from the airport fire from overcrowded orange county animal shelters, as california continues to deal with devastating wildfires seasons. >> bay area companies are turning to technology to help spot fires earlier than ever before. abc seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez shows us how firefighters are using new tools on the ground and in the sky. >> viasat is a program that we started with satellite experts and a number of nonprofits. it will be a new constellation of satellites. >> google is sharing what they're calling a breakthrough in wildfire detection. a new set of satellites have been designed to detect and track wildfires as small as the size of a classroom within 20 minutes. >> there's so much happening where fire science and traditional firefighting are really merging and working together. >> seth charlotte, ceo of santa clara county fire safe council,

said. two weeks ago they announced a partnership with a competitive organization called oro tech. i think we're going to see a little bit of an arms race with satellite technology really being able to look down and detect fires, but it's not just detection of the fires, it's the mapping of the fires. when it comes to detection, charlotte showed us new ai based wildfire smoke sensors so it can discern from a barbecue or a chimney or a wildfire. 50 and five sensors were installed at stanford, palo alto and woodside at the end of august. interestingly enough, right every wildfire or every fire has its own distinct fingerprint, right? >> so there's particulates and other aspects that make up a fire's composition. and these sensors are basically using that artificial intelligence and looking for pattern recognition. >> once it detects a wildfire, depending on the fire agency, a text alert will go out to the battalion chief. the palo alto fire department is collaborating with the n5 sensor technology. the fire chief said the initial

alert of a fire is key. >> it's really fundamental, it's the same case as a fire alarm would be in any occupancy. is that how soon can we be notified? >> 80 sensors are installed across the hawaiian islands. the sensors installed here in the south bay make up the largest installation in the continental u.s. what that says is that people understand the importance of notifying of such emergencies that are so catastrophic as you can see, from fires that are currently burning in palo alto. lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> 50 years after opening, bart says the transbay tube has just received a big upgrade and is ready for the future. the agency shared this new video from inside the rail tunnel yesterday. the tunnel is now retrofitted, and bart's general manager says it can withstand a major earthquake. >> the transbay tube now has a stronger steel lining. it has a more powerful and robust pumping

system that will protect itself against even stronger earthquakes. >> the transbay tube is about four miles long, connecting san francisco and oakland. the announcement brings an end to bart's 20 year earthquake safety program. it costs $1.5 billion and included the retrofitting of more than 74 miles of track and 34 stations. the air is getting cleaner around san francisco bay. oakland international airport. here's a live look from the tarmac from our okay camera this morning, the east bay airport was awarded a level three certification by the airport council for lowering carbon emissions. that means it was able to cut greenhouse gas emissions by altering activities, including how planes take off and land. the airport plans to reach zero emissions by 2040. >> today is the second most important holiday on the chinese lunar calendar, when the mid-autumn festival, also known as the moon festival, takes place. the celebration in san francisco kicked off early with events over the weekend. traditional observances include

above average. so looking at today's forecast, your best chance across the board of finding sunshine is really going to be the middle part of our day. both inland and around the bay shorelines. we start and we finish with clouds the middle part of the day. we get that sunshine, but along the coast we'll keep it overcast all day today. daytime highs mainly in the 60s and in the 70s. look at your highs today only 66 in richmond, a cool 69 in fremont, 68. in palo alto. we'll hit 72. in napa, only 73. the high in san jose. now overnight tonight we will have a full moon nicknamed the harvest moon, but we won't see it because we'll be socked in with cloud cover overnight lows generally in the mid and upper 50s. and there you can see on future weather, we introduced the chance of some drizzle first thing tomorrow morning in the north bay. so here's future weather. the center of the low itself is well offshore, but some of these showers will move in here first thing tomorrow morning. first in the north bay, then the middle part of the day and into the afternoon. it's likely the coast and the south bay that will pick up a little bit of moisture for

rates that have been held above 5% since the summer of 2023. a years long study here in the bay area is emphasizing the importance of helping kids save for the college education early. in 2011, san francisco opened savings accounts for a group of kindergartners in public schools. $50 apiece. that first class of kindergartners graduated last year. a new study found those students were more likely to go to college compared to kids who didn't get the savings account. college enrollment was up 6%. those gains double when you look at black, hispanic, filipino, pacific islander, and indigenous students. the average savings for the class of 2023 was more than $1,400. >> target is gearing up for a busy holiday season. the company announcing they are hiring 100,000 seasonal workers. they'll support order, pickup and drive up customers, as well as stocking shelves. you can apply starting september 25th. workers at amazon will have to

return to the office five days a week. that is a big change from the current pandemic era hybrid policy, only requiring people to be in the office three days a week. the ceo, andy jassy, said the change will help employees invent, collaborate and be connected to each other. the new policy goes into effect january second. >> a boost for santa clara based intel, the struggling chip maker has made a multi-billion dollar deal to produce a custom chip for amazon. it's also getting $3 billion from the biden administration through the chips and science act, to manufacture computer chips for the military. the announcement caused intel's stock to shoot up as much as 8% in premarket trading overnight. >> a politically divisive election season appears to be making it more difficult for one particular group of voters. coming up at 530, you're going to hear from latino voters here in the bay area why

light. there really haven't been many accidents reported this morning, so no problems from the north bay heading into san francisco via the golden gate bridge. and it's also a nice drive right now at the bay bridge. or if you're heading across the bay bridge, no delays at the toll plaza, so we'll check out those drive times for you from highway four to the maze at 17 minutes and westbound 80 from emeryville into san francisco, 13 minutes. just a reminder, there will be road closures around the south of market area due to the dreamforce closures. howard street will be closed right in front of moscone center from third street to fourth street, and also fourth street will be closed between mission and howard. and if you're heading southbound on 101 to sfo, it is delay free at nine minutes. >> back to you parents of san francisco students say the district's decision to delay an announcement of which schools will close or merge next year has only prolonged their anxiety. over the weekend, the school district announced it's delaying the decision until october. they claim they need more time to review the plan. the district faces declining

enrollment, staffing shortages and a projected $400 million deficit by 2026, closing schools in san francisco will not save money. >> there are no costs to be saved. this does not close the deficit. what it has done is cost us a lot of stress. >> superintendent matt wayne says the closures are meant to improve the remaining schools, not save money. san francisco has lost 4000 public school students in the past decade, according to the department of public health. >> fewer people are dying of drug overdoses in san francisco. new data shows 45 people died of overdoses in august. that's a 50% drop from last year. health officials, credit, street outreach teams. >> they can get you a physician on the phone to come up with a treatment plan. in many cases, get you a room to stay, for a few days and get your prescription filled.

>> overall, this year, there's been a 20% drop in accidental overdose deaths. but there is a new emerging concern in july and august, methamphetamine overdoses nearly equaled fentanyl overdoses. one positive note san francisco reports a 3 increase in people getting into residential treatment programs. >> state senator scott wiener is urging governor gavin newsom to sign a bill that would regulate pharmacy benefits managers. these are essentially go betweens who manage prescription drug programs for health plans, employers and medicare, and play a huge role in determining what drugs your insurance covers or doesn't cover. >> what pharmacy your insurance lets you shop at, how much your pharmacist gets paid, and how much you pay for your drugs. >> a congressional hearing last month looked into the role of pharmacy benefits managers play an increasing prescription drug costs. sb 966 would add more oversight for pharmacy benefits

managers and require they be licensed in california, something 25 other states already require. the federal government is launching a new health initiative to increase access to government research funding at san jose state and other california universities. u.s. secretary of health and human services javier becerra joins san jose state and csu officials, as well as congress members anna eshoo and zoe lofgren. zoe lofgren, zoe lofgren. excuse me in a tour of medical research labs at san jose state. becerra signed an agreement to provide future funding to cal state universities for research and training in health professions at san jose state. nearly a third of the student body is latino, and federal officials say it's important to provide this funding in the effort to make education more equitable, to specifically target our resources to innovators who have not historically had access to dc, to r&d dollars, and to help make everybody have an opportunity to be part of the solution. funding will also go to community organizations to
