dreamforce 2024 kicks off, and there's definitely a lot of preparations going on right now here at the moscone center. y t. the lights are on, barricades are up, they are ready. we have new video from overnight that shows some of the preparations ahead of dreamforce 2024 here in san francisco, more than 40,000 people will attend salesforce's annual tech conference in person. and yesterday there were already crowds of people and long lines of cars in the city for the conference, which runs from today through thursday. those from salesforce say that dreamforce 2024 is the largest ai event in the world. >> definitely, ai is on everyone's mind. i believe. for sure in my biggest buzzword of the year is ai. >> i think we got to a ways to go just understanding the use cases. what is the right time to use it when not to use it? how do you bridge that gap between

covering dreamforce all week long bringing you the announcements, the celebrity appearances and the big picture. impact on the bay area. >> we're learning new details about the man accused in the latest assassination attempt on former president donald trump. new video shows the moment officers in florida confront and detain that suspect driver. walk straight back. investigators say ryan wesley ruth was near the golf course for 12 hours. he was waiting for mr. trump to appear. a secret service agent reportedly spotted the barrel of ruth's rifle and was able to scare him away. ruth was arrested shortly afterwards. >> the subject, who did not have line of sight to the former president, fled the scene. he did not fire or get off any shots. >> ruth is facing two firearms charges. he was previously convicted in north carolina on a weapons charge. the fbi continues to look for a motive. research shows ruth voted for

trump in 2016, but was later critical of the former president for his tepid support for ukraine after russia's invasion. >> a crime prevention tool new to san francisco will put live view technology or live cameras in the mission, and mid-market areas, and more could be on the way. trailers equipped with multiple cameras will give police new eyes on neighborhoods around the clock. in addition to flashing lights, the units can also be monitored live depending on the situation and what broadcast this message. >> this area is being monitored for the safety and security of the citizens of san francisco. >> mayor london breed, who is running for reelection, said the city's anti-crime efforts are working with car break-ins, down 70% from last june. she says crime overall is at its lowest level in ten years. she hopes the new cameras will help keep that trend going. >> developing news members of the san francisco symphony chorus voted to authorize a strike overnight. according to the american guild of musical artists, 100% of the paid

choristers voted for strike authorization. at least 80% of the unpaid singers in the chorus pledged to honor a picket line. of the 152 singers, only 32 of them are paid. the union has been negotiating for higher pay and equitable cuts since the last contract expired in july. the symphony says it's looking forward to continuing negotiations. the chorus is scheduled to hold its season opener on thursday. >> fire crews in southern california are making progress to contain the destructive airport fire that's been tearing across riverside and orange counties. containment now at 31%, that's up more than 10% since yesterday morning. and they've been able to hold the number of acres burned to around 23,500. more than 200 structures have already burned. many of them homes. some people are being allowed to return to assess their properties. >> you see a resident, you know, come in and you kind of look at them because you're not sure if it's a good story or a

heartbreaking story. and sometimes there's tears and sometimes there's joy. >> and today, the bay area will begin to play a direct role in relief efforts. the san francisco spca says they'll receive dozens of animals rescued from the airport fire from overcrowded orange county animal shelters, as california continues to deal with devastating wildfire seasons bay area companies are turning to technology to help spot fires earlier than ever before. >> google is sharing what they're calling a breakthrough in wildfire detection. fire sat is a new set of satellites designed to detect and track wildfires as small as classrooms within 20 minutes. and google isn't the only company coming up with solutions. fire safety and tech company aurora tech teamed up to create ai based wildfire smoke sensors. >> interestingly enough, right? every wildfire or every fire has its own distinct fingerprint, right? so there's particulates and other aspects that make up a fire's composition. and these

sensors are basically using that artificial intelligence and looking for pattern recognition. >> there are several of these sensors installed in the south bay. once a fire is detected a text is sent to the battalion chief. the sensors in the south bay make up the largest installation of the tech in the continental u.s. >> a popular north bay beach is closed indefinitely after human waste was discovered leaking from a nearby cliff. we're talking about bolinas beach, located between point reyes and muir woods in the north bay. county crews recently found human waste seeping from the cliffs above the beach. >> when i heard that there was sewage coming down, it kind of is a little terrifying. >> the beach closure stretches from brighton avenue north to agate beach. county officials say the sewage flow is happening at several dozen locations. >> after testing a few different sources along that bluff, we found that the substance was actually wastewater. it

contained e-coli and other bacteria that aligns itself with human waste. >> officials are testing and working on cleaning up the cliffs. it's still unclear if the sewage is coming from septic tanks in nearby communities, or from other sources. it's also unclear when the beach is going to reopen. >> 610 the accuweather forecast daytime highs. very similar to yesterday. yesterday felt cool. temperatures were below average by ten degrees in some areas. again, mid 60s to the low 70s. so cool for september. that's what we're calling it. we're in between two areas of low pressure. so today is kind of a day of transition. one low pressure is pushing off to the south and east. another one is going to quickly slide down the coast and by tomorrow bring us a renewed chance of some drizzle. but today in between these two features, we'll have partly sunny skies and those autumn like temperatures. this afternoon. future weather. we do begin with cloudy skies, the middle part of our day. that's

in europe, and it could be in the united states soon. covid researchers and the vice president of the american medical association say the new variant is called zeke. it will likely fuel our winter surge. it's believed to be more infectious than past types of covid, though the infections aren't necessarily more severe. it hasn't been detected in

california yet. health experts believe the new covid vaccine should hold up against it. a years long study here in the. there we are, a years long study here in the bay area showing the importance to help kids save for their college education. early in 2011, san francisco opened savings accounts for a group of kindergartners in public schools, 50 bucks apiece. that first class of kindergartners graduated last year. a new study found those students who had the savings accounts were more likely to go to college, compared to kids who didn't get the savings accounts. college enrollment was up 6%. those gains double when you look at black, hispanic, filipino, pacific islander, and indigenous students. the average savings for the class of 2023 was more than 1400 bucks. 50 years after opening, bart says the transbay tube has just received a big upgrade and is ready for the future. the agency shared this new video from inside the rail tunnel yesterday. the tunnel is now retrofitted, and bart's general manager says it can withstand a major earthquake.

>> the transbay tube now has a stronger steel lining. it has a more powerful and robust pumping system that will protect itself against even stronger earthquakes. >> the transbay tube is about four miles long, connecting san francisco and oakland. the announcement brings an end to bart's 20 year earthquake safety program. it costs $1.5 billion and includes the retrofitting of more than 74 miles of track and 34 stations. the bay area's effort to acquire the nation's first high speed electric ferries is getting a boost from the federal government. san francisco bay ferry announced it was awarded an $11 million grant. the money will help the agency buy three 150 passenger battery electric vessels. delivery of the first electric ferry is expected in 2026. >> in the north bay, an adorable 11 month old baby found herself stuck in a doggy door after trying to mimic the family dog

woman's brain taken from before, during, and after pregnancy. they found changes happened in regions of the brain linked to socializing and emotional processing. some were still seen two years after she gave birth. scientists say more studies are needed to determine the potential impact of the findings. they hope the insight could lead to improved understanding of conditions like postpartum depression and preeclampsia. target is gearing up for a busy holiday season. the company announcing they are hiring 100,000 seasonal workers. they will support order, pickup and drive up customers as well as stocking shelves. you can apply starting on september 25th. well, a big night for the emmys. you saw it right here on abc seven, along with nearly 7 million other people. that's the biggest audience since 2021. a 54% increase over the last show, which aired back in january after being delayed by months

see this. welcome to trailblazers right here. and of course, a lot of people are getting ready for this big conference. we'll be here bringing you the very latest live in san francisco. gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. gloria, thank you. >> parents of san francisco students say the district's decision to delay an announcement of which schools will close or merge next year has only prolonged their anxiety. over the weekend, the school district announced it's delaying the decision until october. they claim they need more time to review the plan. the district faces declining enrollment, staffing shortages and a projected $400 million deficit by 2026. >> closing schools in san francisco will not save money. there are no costs to be saved. this does not close the deficit. what it has done is cost us a lot of stress. >> superintendent matt wayne says the closures are meant to

improve the remaining schools, not to save money. san francisco has lost 4000 public school students in the past decade, according to the department of public health. >> fewer people are dying of drug overdoses in san francisco. new data shows 45 people died of overdoses in august. that is a 50% drop from last year. health officials credit street outreach teams. >> they can get you a physician on the phone to come up with a treatment plan. in many cases, get you a room to stay, for a few days. and get your prescription filled. >> overall, this year, there's been a 20% drop in accidental overdose deaths. there's a new emerging concern. in july and august, methamphetamine overdoses. nearly equaled fentanyl overdoses and we'll end on this positive note. san francisco reports a 35% increase in people getting into residential treatment programs. >> state senator scott wiener is urging governor gavin newsom to sign a bill that would regulate

pharmacy benefits managers. these are essentially go betweens who manage prescription drug programs for health plans. employers and medicare, and play a huge role in determining what drugs your insurance covers or doesn't cover. >> what pharmacy your insurance lets you shop at, how much your pharmacist gets paid, and how much you pay for your drugs. >> a congressional hearing last month looked into the role pharmacy benefits managers play in increasing prescription drug costs. sb 966 would add more oversight for pharmacy benefits managers and require they be licensed in california. this is something 25 other states already require. and today, both presidential candidates are back on the campaign trail after a secondary assassination attempt on the former president. the attempt has left many worried about the safety of the candidates despite the recent threats. both candidates will be visiting six states total. >> this is a very difficult

environment to navigate. the candidates want to get out and touch people, but we have a situation now where we have a threat matrix that is unprecedented. >> former president trump and running mate jd vance are placing blame on the democrat's rhetoric. president biden and vice president harris have both openly condemned the violence and have asked for more security following the incident. investigators are still looking into the suspect's records. >> happening today, the senate is set to vote on legislation that would establish a nationwide right to in vitro fertilization. this is the second time this year the bill is being voted on. the bill has little chance of passing congress. democrats are hoping to use the vote to lay out a contrast between republicans ahead of the november election, especially as some states have proposed laws that could limit access to the procedure. >> tiktok has made its case, and now we wait to see if a federal appeals court agrees. a law that could lead to a ban on the app is unconstitutional. that decision is not expected until december. lawyers for tiktok's

parent company, bytedance, went before the court yesterday. they argued the law violates u.s. free speech laws. however, the justice department calls tiktok a national security threat. it says the chinese government could gain access to americans data and manipulate content. >> the problem is that that same data is extremely valuable to a foreign adversary trying to compromise the security of the united states. >> tiktok has said it doesn't share americans user data with the chinese government. >> now it's our abc seven mornings advancer. it's our way of highlighting some things happening in the day ahead here in the bay area. >> first, california is close to reviewing new rules meant to bring more options to homeowners who need fire insurance. today, the state insurance commission is holding a hearing to review public comment on those proposed rules. we've been covering this issue for a while now. many people have been losing their coverage because insurance companies say the risk is just too high. the state has been working on a new set of rules to entice insurance companies to

sean diddy combs is in federal custody awaiting a court appearance where charges against him will be revealed. combs was arrested in new york city yesterday by homeland security agents. it comes amid a wave of lawsuits filed against him alleging sexual abuse. that includes a lawsuit from his ex-girlfriend, cassie ventura that alleged years of abuse, including domestic violence and rape. since that lawsuit was settling last november, combs has faced ten more lawsuits involving sexual assault and violence dating back to the 90s. and back in march, federal agents raided combs home in miami and the los angeles area. >> they were looking for electronic evidence. according to many of the plaintiffs in the civil lawsuits, allegations he denies. but he kept extensive records in the form of video that while these things were going on, he was recording with his phone. >> sources say prosecutors have interviewed a number of combs

accusers in connection with this investigation. combs, as lawyer, says they believe this is a, quote, unjust prosecution. >> american gymnast jordan chiles is appealing the ruling that stripped her of a bronze medal in the floor exercise at the paris olympics. her appeal to the supreme court of switzerland seeks to reverse the decision that upheld her fifth place finish. that court is expected to rule in a few months. >> new light is being shed on the doomed oceangate voyage that killed five people on their way to see the titanic. a coast guard hearing is giving a better sense as to what may have gone wrong, including a lack of testing before the mission. former workers say they were unaware of the intent to reach the titanic, and were clashing with the former ceo, who died in the explosion. >> he asked me. he wanted me to be the pilot that runs the titanic missions, and i told him i'm not getting in it. >> there were reportedly more than 100 different equipment

issues in the years leading up to the disaster. the vessel was never pressure tested to industry standards. reports say it had even partially sunk a month before the mission. >> now it's your morning money report. after months of concern over rising inflation, the fed has started their two day meeting where it's expected they'll announce a cut in interest rates. interest rates have been at a 23 year high since july of last year, staying between 5.25 and 5.5%. rates have been raised in order to make borrowing more expensive and to cool down the economy and inflation. now, economists expect the fed to cut rates to bring them more in line with the slowing inflation and job market. workers at amazon will have to return to the office five days a week. that is a big change from its current pandemic era hybrid policy that only requires people to be in the office three days a week. ceo andy jassy said the change will help the employees invent, collaborate and be connected to each other. the new policy goes
