filed an injunction to block oakland's airport from using the name san francisco bay oakland international airport. good evening. thank you for joining us. >> i'm dan ashley, and i'm ama daetz san francisco city attorney says the name is a trademark infringement. and is confusing. >> abc seven news reporter louis pena spoke with him and has the latest on these new developments. >> the battle between the san francisco airport and the oakland airport has now reached new heights. san francisco's city attorney david chu, now filing a motion asking a judge to immediately stop oakland's airport from using its new name, saying it's creating confusion. >> sfo conducted a survey that demonstrated confusion levels over 20%. >> earlier this year, the port of oakland changed the airport's name to san francisco bay. oakland international airport. chu's motion breaks down multiple incidents where people reported landing in oakland surprised they were not at san francisco international airport. san francisco has already filed

a lawsuit in federal court to stop oakland's name change, but the preliminary injunction would create an immediate effect. >> we've tried to reason with oakland officials to avoid this very step to come up with alternative names that could work for all of us, and we even agreed on mediation. but unfortunately, nothing came out of that mediation. >> back in april, oakland's board of port of commissioners explained their stance. >> nobody owns the san francisco bay. the port operates and is the steward for 20 miles of land along the san francisco bay. >> the name change was approved april 11th by the port of oakland commissioners. what didn't change was a three letter code oak, which travelers tell me they pay close attention to avoid mistakes. you're glad you didn't get confused. >> yes, yes, that would have been kind of a pity. >> in a statement, the port of oakland categorized san francisco's latest legal action as an attempt to stifle competition and travel choices by bay area residents and position sfo as the only airport

that serves the san francisco bay area. it is not an oak will continue to aggressively fight for its position on the san francisco bay. this east bay resident wishes the port of oakland would rethink the name change. >> born and raised in oakland, and i think it's a real slap in the face. >> in san francisco, luz pena abc seven news. >> there's a new push to protect legacy businesses in san francisco. this is joe's ice cream, which has been serving scoops in the richmond district for nearly 65 years. supervisor aaron peskin says the building it's in was recently bought by a real estate mogul from texas and is being targeted for redevelopment. it's similar to what's happening in the fillmore district, as abc seven reported first last month. peskin introduced legacy business protections there and is now expanding them citywide. >> i firmly believe that san francisco can build the housing that it needs, can continue to grow and evolve without displacing the businesses that

make each and every one of our neighborhoods so special. >> peskin and supervisor connie chan, who serves the richmond district, introduced the citywide protections at today's san francisco board of supervisors meeting. there is no word on when the measure could be scheduled for a vote. >> california's insurance commissioner announced today what he considers the largest insurance reform the state has seen in 30 years. >> but consumer advocacy organizations argue the plan comes with significant loopholes that will hurt consumers. >> seven on your sides stephanie sierra is here with the story tonight. stephanie. >> yes, commissioner. laura's proposal affects all of us every consumer and policyholder in california, and we heard from one man who saw 1,000% increase in his insurance premiums in just four years. and commissioner laura testified to lawmakers today that his plan aims to fix problems like that. but consumer watchdog says it only tells half the story. for the first time in nearly a year since introducing his strategy to regulate california's insurance market, commissioner

ricardo lara testified before the assembly insurance committee with his latest plan to reform it. >> we are creating an entirely new law, new procedures from the ground up. >> that plan includes promises of removing policies from the fair plan to go back to market, increasing insurance availability and pledging for more transparency and accuracy in rate making and catastrophe modeling. but consumer advocates say this commissioner has betrayed his oath of office. >> he has misled and lied to the public. >> harvey rosenfield, the founder of consumer watchdog, says the plan comes with several loopholes. one of the big ones claims that insurance companies will be required to expand sales in fire prone areas to at least 85% of what they sell elsewhere. well, there's a loophole to that. >> maybe 85, but it's okay if you just do five. >> rosenfield says in the fine print, the regulation eliminates transparency and disclosure

requirements, and insurers have no deadline for implementation. another example claims to reduce costs and regulate rate hikes. consumer watchdog says the proposal actually imposes price hikes from unverifiable catastrophe models, use computer models and software and algorithms to jack up our premiums. >> they're not allowed to do that under proposition 103. >> prop 103 is the insurance reduction and reform act that aims to protect consumers from arbitrary insurance rates and encourage a competitive market. >> last year, we had 100% full coverage. now we have half of that. however, the premium went from $349,000 to a whopping 1.7 million. >> my insurance shouldn't cost me as much as my mortgage. if he can't hold their feet to the fire, he should get out of the kitchen. >> now, by law, insurance companies are entitled to rate

increases as well as entitled to a fair profit. but under prop 103, they're not allowed to pass on the cost of reinsurance. that's another issue being debated, right now. meantime, commissioner lara says he's launching local assistance centers near areas of major wildfires to help consumers answer questions and file claims directly. okay. >> all right. thank you steph. >> absolutely. >> all right. let's move now to your voice. your vote. today is national voter registration day. efforts have been underway all day throughout the bay area to get people registered to vote. and work is especially being done to target specific groups of people who may be less likely to vote. abc seven news reporter zach fuentes is live in the south bay bureau. with that story tonight, zach. >> yeah. dan. and here in the south bay, a lot of the emphasis today was getting marginalized communities, young people out and registered to vote. and though turnout has been low among those groups in the past, there's high hopes for this election. the campus was bustling at san jose state

university tuesday. much of the activity on the paseo thanks to the sjsu votes festival. >> it's celebrating constitution day and national voter registration day. and so we have 40 campus and community partners out here talking to people about civic engagement, voting, voting rights and the constitution. >> many of those partners, students themselves, like senior malik diaz. >> young people aren't voting as large as they need to. and, you know, we have a lot of issues on the ballot, a lot of issues in this country that i think that affect young people, and that will be continuing to affect young people throughout these years. >> according to the u.s. census, the age group that saw the lowest voter turnout historically in california is the 18 to 24 year old demographic that was especially true in 2022. but experts say that age group has extreme potential. >> we have 8 million new gen z voters who will be eligible for the first time this year, so this really is a crucial demographic this year, the u.s. response to the israel-hamas war is proving to be a deterrent,

with many young voters saying they plan to sit this election out. >> still, the push on campus includes urging those voters to use their voices. >> the best way to have their concerns registered about all of these issues is to vote. and then it's not just the president that's on the ballot. we have all these lower down races. the assembly races, congressional races that are going to affect them as well. in addition to young voters, a coalition of nonprofits also came together in san jose tuesday. >> their goal to increase voter turnout among all marginalized communities. >> our coalition firmly believes that every voice in our communities matter, no matter our background or political beliefs. we know that for democracy to work for all of us, it must include all of us. >> the work from both of the groups you heard from doesn't stop. tuesday, the students will be canvasing in neighborhoods near csu, as will the together we vote coalition, who will also be phone banking. now, an important date to remember if you haven't registered yet is

courtroom, former antioch police officer daniel harris pleaded guilty to distributing steroids. another former officer, devin wenger, will also be tried for dealing steroids. wenger and two antioch cops also face charges of violating civil rights while on the force. >> new developments in the case of a deadly robbery involving an armored truck security guard. this was in 2022. now, 28 year old arturo torres, who drove the getaway car for the robbery at the kaiser san leandro medical center, has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge. torres pleaded to accessory to murder and will serve a two year sentence. the man accused of killing 60 year old john mendez is awaiting trial for murder. >> a judge has denied bail for music mogul sean diddy combs while he awaits trial, accused of sex crimes. >> combs pleaded not guilty to the charges. this morning. federal prosecutors say combs coerced women and men into engaging in demeaning sex acts. reporter josh haskell from our los angeles sister station has more. >> sean diddy comleading not

guilty in a manhattan courtroom tuesday to federal sex trafficking and racketeering charges. prosecutors calling combs dangerous, asking the judge he be jailed without bail. the judge agreeing ordering combs detained pending trial, saying my concern is that this is a crime that happens behind closed doors. the judge also saying the alleged violence seems to occur when you're not necessarily in control of your actions. because of that substance abuse. >> the indictment alleges that between at least 2008 and the present, combs abused, threatened and coerced victims to fulfill his sexual desires. >> the indictment lays out how prosecutors say the music mogul used his business empire to carry out criminal behavior, including inducing female victims and male sex workers into drugged up, sometimes days long sexual performances he called freak offs. in march, combs beverly hills mansion was raided by homeland security as part of this investigation, and his miami beach home was also raided on the same day as

20th and 25th. the city decided to close the encampment because of what they say is a rise in crime in that area, including a double homicide at the

encampment earlier this month. they say up to 30 people have been living there. outreach workers have been on site to help find shelter for those who want it. three people have already been moved into the community cabin program. the cleanup is expected to last two weeks. it's a big job. >> the reopening of the cliff house in san francisco has been delayed, anticipating more than $10 million in repairs, according to san francisco chronicle. crews have discovered major infrastructure issues since they began demolition months ago. the new operator now hopes to reopen next year instead of this year as originally planned. the space will be occupied by a to be announced food and beverage business. >> happening this weekend, part of i-680 south will be closed for construction work in the east bay. the stretch from acosta boulevard in san ramon to 580, in pleasanton will be shut down from 9 p.m. friday until 4 a.m. monday. they hope all one. 580 and 680 connectors will be open. all along the right lane. that's the plan. drivers are encouraged to take alternate

p.m. now, if you get lucky enough to catch it, it's going to be pretty cool. but we do have a lot of cloud cover out there as another system is heading in our direction and this system is going to parallel the california coast as it does, it will squeeze out a little drizzle for the bay area, possibly a spotty shower or two. so looking at the pacific northwest, this is where the energy is going. clearly parts of northwestern california starting to see some precipitation, which is welcome here in our state. no matter what. as you know, there are so many fires burning. and of course, in southern california they're going to get some help. uh- cloud cover overhead. higher humidity. here is a view from our mount tam cam of the marine layer. and then the higher clouds up above 58. in the city in the 60s oakland, hayward, redwood city, san jose, you're at 70 degrees. these temperatures well below average from our emeryville camera threatening skies, 60s from santa rosa to petaluma, 70, fairfield, concord and livermore, you're at 69 degrees. let's check out livermore. high temperatures tomorrow only

local airport worker is retiring this special k-9 is named zumba. she's a seven year old german shorthaired pointer. she's been at sfo sniffing for explosives for five years. and look at this. for her last day on the job, she was rewarded with this ball drop. she was adopted by her handler, jacob, and will enjoy the rest of her years living life and relaxing as a lapdog. jacob will be paired with another canine soon to get back on the job early next year. congrats thanks for joining us. i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. >> world news tonight with david muir is next. we'll see you again at six.
