12 years on the market. >> from abc news. this is america. this morning. >> good wednesday morning, everyone. i'm rhiannon ally. >> and i'm lionel moise. we begin with the unprecedented attack in the middle east. thousands of pagers belonging to members of hezbollah exploded across lebanon, injuring thousands of people. >> among those killed was a young girl. sources say israel was behind the attack, apparently hiding explosives in pagers. hezbollah vows to retaliate. >> abc's christiane cordero is here with the very latest. christiane. good morning. >> lionel. good morning. this appears to have been a sophisticated remote attack. and we're learning more about how it was pulled off this morning. schools across lebanon are closed after an unprecedented attack involving thousands of pages held by hezbollah militants that exploded simultaneously. >> these were not lithium ion batteries cooking off. these were explosives. >> thousands of devices detonated in lebanon after receiving a message yesterday,

killing at least nine people and injuring nearly 3000. hezbollah saying as many as 11 of its members were killed. the devices blew up in hand's pockets and here, in a shopping bag, security video shows a man reaching for his pocket before it explodes. israel has not claimed responsibility, but a source says israel was working to perfect what's called a supply chain interdiction attack. former state department official steve ganyard explains how it may have worked. >> the israelis likely saw an opportunity, bought up thousands of pages, took them apart, inserted explosives and then put them back on the market to sell directly to hezbollah, and then using the radio frequencies that normally bring data into that pager, they simultaneously detonated all of the pagers. >> lebanon's council of ministers called the attack criminal israeli aggression on a sovereign country, and hezbollah warns a response is coming. >> u.s. officials believe there will be a response by hezbollah, but it may take some time.

hezbollah has not only lost a principal way it communicates, but had operatives killed and hundreds, if not thousands of wounded operatives put out of commission for weeks. if not months to come. >> a company in taiwan says the pagers were made in budapest. the new york times saying each contained 1 to 2oz of explosive material. back in february, hezbollah fighters shifted away from using cell phones due to security concerns. >> they've been told by the head of hezbollah that the israelis are probably using those cell phones to track their whereabouts, so that they think that they take a lower tech solution to protect themselves, when what they really did was create a vulnerability that it seems the israelis have exploited. >> u.s. officials say they had no involvement and no warning about the attack. observers say the attack will prompt many militaries around the world to look into replicating this technology. rhiannon. all right, christiane, thank you for that. >> music mogul sean diddy combs is due back in court today, appealing for bail in a massive

sex crimes case. his lawyer says combs is now in therapy getting help. this morning, sean diddy combs is in federal custody, denied bail after pleading not guilty to racketeering and sex trafficking charges. his attorney had offered a $50 million bail, arguing that combs is not a flight risk. >> he came here to turn himself in. why doesn't the government want him to turn himself in? because then they can ask for detention. so they go and they arrest him. >> but in denying bail, the judge cites combs substance abuse and anger issues, saying the danger is quite serious for witnesses and alleged victims in this case. between at least 2008 and the present. >> combs abused, threatened and coerced victims to fulfill his sexual desires, protect his reputation, and conceal his conduct. >> combs pleaded not guilty to charges that he led a criminal enterprise that subjected young women to violence, use of firearms, threats, coercion, and verbal, emotional, physical, and sexual abuse. the indictment

claims combs manipulated women to participate in highly orchestrated performances of sexual activity with male prostitutes, called freak offs. >> he used the embarrassing and sensitive recordings he made of the freak offs as collateral against the victims. >> prosecutors say authorities seized the recordings along with firearms, drugs and more than a thousand bottles of baby oil and lubricant during raids last march on diddy's homes in miami beach and los angeles. >> the freak outs sometimes lasted days at a time, involved multiple commercial sex workers, and often involved a variety of narcotics to keep them obedient and compliant. >> prosecutors claiming when combs did not get his way, he hit kicked, threw objects at, and dragged victims at times by their hair, adding, the victims didn't think they could refuse him without risking further abuse. but combs attorney insists the freak offs were consensual and it was adults and

consensual, and everybody who was there wanted to be there. combs is reportedly being held in a special housing unit in the detention center here in new york, separate from the general prison population. but he will be back in court today to appeal that bail decision. if convicted on these charges, he could face the rest of his life in prison. >> the fbi now investigating suspicious mail sent to election offices across the country. letters were received in these 16 states, containing a white substance that has been deemed non-hazardous. some letters had a return address in maryland from a sender called the traitor elimination army. meanwhile, the candidates are back on the campaign trail, including former president trump for the first time since the apparent assassination attempt in florida. >> just a lot of people for a town hall. >> former president trump talking crowd size at a town hall in michigan. >> you know, a town hall is supposed to have about 300 people. you have about 8000 people here. >> the event moderated by

firefighters and a marine rescue team on cape cod have saved a group of beached dolphins. 11 of them got stranded on the shore. the group used hoses to keep them cool while they were moved back to the ocean. more than 140 dolphins got stranded in the same area in june. >> it is time now for your wednesday weather. well, these kids were enjoying the fun swinging in the rain in north carolina after coastal areas got more than 18in of rain in just 12 hours. a state of emergency is in effect. dozens of roads are closed. many are damaged. most of the rain is now moving through virginia, maryland and washington, d.c. before arriving in the new york area by tomorrow. checking today's high temperatures record highs are possible from texas to the upper midwest. 70s for the northeast and the west coast big change for uber riders today. and it's in the name of safety. >> also ahead, new protections

features to protect teens who on average, spend more than three hours per day on social media. but advocates claim it's too little, too late. this morning, instagram is rolling out a sweeping overhaul that limits content for teenagers and beefs up parental control over the app. >> things like who can contact them, what content they see and how much time they spend on their device. and we've built things like making sure these are all private by default. there's restrictions on who can message your teen, there's content restrictions so that they see less inappropriate content. >> teens who already have an instagram account will automatically be enrolled in a so-called teen account, and anyone under 16 will need a parent's permission to change the settings. but what if a teenager lies about their age? >> if a teen is on our platform, they see these protections coming in. they try to set up a new account, an adult account. we're going to ask them to verify their age. if they try to change their age to an adult ag,
